    As of 2009,
Specialty- $4M (maybe $3M) coverage, costs a little more. Very speedy service. If you catch them in the office, same day service is available.
AFA - $2M coverage (ie. adequate) for a little less. However, same day service is not available, speedy service is rare except for "additional insured" certificates.

In short, if you have a month to wait for a certificate, go with AFA and save some cash on acceptable insurance. The extra coverage you get with Speciality is above what you'll need liability insurance for most of the time: getting jobs; which usually require only $2M. However, if you need it this week, Specialty is still a little more together with the paperwork.

      Oh... IJA
IJA is kinda unknown. They offer AFA coverage at Specialty's prices and you're only covered when you perform outside. They are, however, the only insurance company yet to adopt the NAFAA codes as their standards of behaviour. So if you're not happy about some part of NAFAA, you might want to go with them.

Other companies like Duck cover outside the US.

I have had a lot of trouble getting answers from American Fire Artists to simple inquiries like if they offer a reduced rate at the 6-month mark (like Specialty does - they offer a reduced rate when the policy hits the point where this is only 6 months left until it expires, i.e. in October, i.e. right now), confirming their coverage area (we're in Canada) & if the group-order discount offer (a percentage off for multiple policies purchased with a single order/payment) is still valid. Sent multiple messages, never heard a peep. Guess they did not want our business.
