A new contact improvisational sport played with fire!
The play of the game is like a re-enactment of a live volcano. The game is played similar to a cross between Catch and Toss, Volley ball, and Hackey-sack, except we are playing with fire!
Two teams, consisting of five players each, form an inner and outer circle. The team on the outside circle is in the "guard" or safety postion to avoid inflaming the audience... literally.
The team forming the inner circle is the team in play. The game is focused around a ball of fire, the Fireball, about the size of a vollyball. The Fireball is passed between players and pitched to the team "kicker" who serves the ball to the competing team by swinging a single heavy poi as a bat, and "kicking" the Fireball as high and straight up as possible from the center of the circle.
Each team of five players consists of 4 "Knights" and 1 "Dragon", who is the kicker. The Knights carry two "swords" or clubs each and the Dragon uses a single heavy long poi, or "Dragon's Tail", and must be proficient with it. Novice and beginning players remain unlit, but advanced and tournament play requires that all players be "lit up!"
The play of the game, briefly, goes as follows:
Upon recieving the Fireball, the Knights of a team, using any variation of contact improvisational dance, will "catch" and "toss" the Fireball from Knight to Knight. Focused intention and planning are required for the final Knight to "pitch" the Fireball carefully to the Dragon, who will then "kick" the Fireball with the poi and send it as high as possible.
THis is the moment when the two teams must "dance" their way around each other, switch positions, and continue the play with the competing team in the center now.
Play continues until Fireball is extinguished.
Full rules are listed in discussion topics and may be subject to change and refinement.
