For quite some time, I've been extolling the virtues of LA Looks Mega Hold for making hair fireproof. Well, finally, a tribe member put it to the test. Take it away Stephanie.

LA Looks Mega Hold Styling Gel - Fire Proof? A review (yes...another one...I'm a geek) topic posted Tue, March 20, 2007 - 10:21 PM by Stefanie
I read a thread on Tribe mentioning LA Looks gel (mega hold - the green stuff) was tested to be fire proof. Like most...I believe everything I read on the web <snark>, so I set up my lab in the kitchen just to be sure.

Equipment:
One large sink with bowl of water
Three feathers (my unwitting victims)
A bottle of LA Looks Mega hold gel - the 20 oz bottle (an "X-treme Value"! - I *love* marketing - I mean it's a HUGE bottle! Who could use this much gel?)
A regular aim-n-flame type lighter
A torch like cigar lighter

Experiment #1: Take feather #1, apply regular lighter.
Result: Quickly douse blazing feather in water. Open windows and doors...pull fan out and set to high. Inwardly wish burning feather smelled as good a burning hair.

Experiment #2: Take feather #2, apply copious amounts of LA Mega Hold gel. "Squeegee" off extra with fingers. Before gel "dries", apply regular lighter...then torch lighter
Result with regular lighter: No burning. Apply heat in one spot for 2 seconds...no burning
Result with torch lighter: No burning. Apply heat in one spot for 2 seconds...popping sounds as if it's starting to burn, but no smoldering or burning.
Take paper towel and run feather through it as if wiping feather...there were some soot marks on the paper towel (at least it looked like soot marks)

Experiment #3: Take feather #3 and repeat experiment #2 but wait for gel to "dry" before applying heat source.
Result with regular lighter: No burning. Apply heat in one spot for 2 seconds...no burning
Result with torch lighter: No burning, but popping sounds. Apply heat in one spot for 2 seconds...edges of feather starts to smolder.
Take paper towel and run feather through it as if wiping feather...there were some soot marks on the paper towel (at least it looked like soot marks)

Hope this helps....
