          Fire bowl instruction sheet
Fire performing is dangerous. You can burn yourself. Only practice with fire props (including fire bowl) outside with someone with a wet towel standing by in case you ignite yourself by accident. Accidents CAN HAPPEN so BE CAREFUL!! You want to make sure that the area you practice in is away from anything flammable. Make sure the clothing you use is fire safe (no feathers, loose hanging clothing, etc.) There is more on fire performer safety in the Safety First portion of this post.

Fire Bowl: bowl, cauldron, sand paper, fuel, ice, rock salt, rubbing alcohol

Bowl: Use a metal bowl (all metal, no rubber or plastic). Dimensions for the bowl are as follows; 21 inches around, 7 inches across top, 3.5 inches across (flat) bottom, 4 inches tall from base of bowl to the bottom.

Cauldron: Get a cauldron from you local pagan store or you can get one online at earthspriritemporium.com (the cauldron is 2 inches high and 3.25 inches in diameter).
Sand Paper: Get some sand paper from a hardware store and glue it to the bottom of your bowl (makes it so the bowl doesn’t slide off your head).
Lighting Bowl: Once you have your bowl assembled, you can test it out. This is when you need the crushed ice, rock salt, rubbing alcohol and colmens white gas (optional). You put the crushed ice in the bowl filling it almost half way. You fill the cauldron with the rock salt about 2 tablespoons full, and then you pour the rubbing alcohol in to cover the rock salt. It is optional to add a dash of white gas (about a teaspoon full). The white gas helps the bowl light fast, if you need instant ignition. Place cauldron with all the salt and rubbing alcohol in the bowl on top of the ice and PRESTO! You have your self a fire bowl. ;o)
Safety First: Protect your hair! Loose hair can catch fire. Avoid a possible hazard by pulling your hair back. Use a head wrap (some materials are less flammable than others). Or you can use a piece of fire retardant fabric. This will help keep the bowl in place when balancing and it will protect your head from heat. There are different hairstyles that lend themselves nicely to balancing, such as the double bun hairstyle. Once you have your new hairdo and you are ready to light your new fancy fire bowl, get some one to watch you with a wet towel and make sure your safe. If you can, have an experienced fire performer to help you light up for the first time. Last but not least do not attempt to practice or perform when it is windy. Wind can blow fire around possibly resulting in an injury.
