Way, way too long after they should have arrived, I finally have ipé dowels in 1" diameter. These were milled by a woodworker using a router, and are not perfectly circular or consistent in their cross-section, but they should make extremely stout staffs.
I also still have some 3/4" ipé dowels. I've made a number of staffs with these already, and they've turned out really well.
