I've been noodling around with the idea of poi where each piece consists entirely of one length of rope. I've finally made my first prototype set of these, which I'm calling "wrapper's delight"--I envision them as special-purpose poi for people with wrap-oriented styles: there's zero metal to burn yourself on. Plus, well, I just think it's a cool idea.

It's going to take me a while to get the fabrication process down. These consist of a monkey-fist knot around a smaller monkey-fist core, and the handle is an eye splice. Both techniques are hard to execute with perfect uniformity. I'm hoping I can get consistency through repetition.

A photo of these is in the gallery for this tribe. After I make a few more prototypes, pass them around, and get feedback, I hope to start offering them for sale.

I gave these to Vance, who burned with them last night.

One problem is that he was using the loops as finger loops rather than wrist loops (as I envisioned), resulting in grip problems. Simple solution would be to make them with longer "chain" sections so they'd be the right length to use as wrist loops. Other than that, they seemed to perform fine. OK burn time--I'd estimate 7 minutes at least.

Vance did a lot of wrist-wraps with them and let the wicks dwell on his skin for a scary amount of time. While I constructed these specifically to permit that, it was still kind of weird seeing them used that way.

It's clear that the hot end of the "chains" is going to be the weak spot in terms of wear and tear. I hope it doesn't prove to be a problem.
