My schedule is going to be tight for the next couple of months. Burning Flipside is coming up, and I will be leading a theme camp. If you need anything, please let me know sooner rather than later.

Pictures of recent custom work

I recently made a couple of custom pieces for a friend, Wulff, and have uploaded pictures of them to this group's gallery.

1. Grips: Wulff wanted simple chain loops with leather "boots" over them. Making those leather boots is a royal PITA. I'm not entirely satisfied with the work that I did.

2. Wicks: I made another set of big monkey fists for Wulff. I had made a set for him before and one of them fell apart (you can see the failure mode in the gallery, too). These are also a bit of a PITA to make, but I think I'm getting the hang of making these—this set came out much more symmetrical, and I hope will hold together for more than one burn. These are five-bight monkey fists over a three-bight monkey-fist core. Each wick requires 20' of rope, although quite a bit of that—about 6'—is slack that you need in order to make the loose knots, but will cut off after you tighten the knots down.

A question for my customers

Specifically, people who have the laminated-leather finger nooses or hand harnesses.

Do you feel that the finger straps are too wide? That is, that they ride too high up on your knuckles?

I've had people with small hands request narrower straps, and have been happy to make them that way, but recently I've had a couple of big guys say that they found the straps to be too wide, so I'm trying to figure out whether it makes sense to downsize in general.

ipé staffs now in 1" diameter

Way, way too long after they should have arrived, I finally have ipé dowels in 1" diameter. These were milled by a woodworker using a router, and are not perfectly circular or consistent in their cross-section, but they should make extremely stout staffs.

I also still have some 3/4" ipé dowels. I've made a number of staffs with these already, and they've turned out really well.

5-bight monkey fists posted to gallery

A friend, Greg, asked me to make him some extra-big monkey-fist wicks.

What I wound up making was 5-bight over 3-bight knots. They're a little lopsided (this was my first time making this pattern). They clock in a little over 8 oz each dry, making them slightly heavier than my "mega" wicks. Greg is going to burn them soon and report back to me on their performance.

Prototype poi picture posted

I've been noodling around with the idea of poi where each piece consists entirely of one length of rope. I've finally made my first prototype set of these, which I'm calling "wrapper's delight"--I envision them as special-purpose poi for people with wrap-oriented styles: there's zero metal to burn yourself on. Plus, well, I just think it's a cool idea.

It's going to take me a while to get the fabrication process down. These consist of a monkey-fist knot around a smaller monkey-fist core, and the handle is an eye splice. Both techniques are hard to execute with perfect uniformity. I'm hoping I can get consistency through repetition.

A photo of these is in the gallery for this tribe. After I make a few more prototypes, pass them around, and get feedback, I hope to start offering them for sale.

Another day, another prototype

I completed my first set of brick-stitch snakes today. I've posted a couple photos to the gallery. The concept is nothing new, although I think I may have a new twist on it.

One problem with the brick stitch is secure termination. What I've done with these is build up the brick stitch around a 1" dowel to leave an open core, and then take the loose tails and slip them all the way up the core: they actually terminate just below the attachment ring.

My hypothesis is that centripetal force on the wicks will force the knotwork to snug down harder over the tails to prevent unraveling. What I'm unsure about is how the bottoms will stand up to wear: if the ropes wear through at the bottom, the whole thing unravels.

ipé staffs

At some point in the near future, I should be getting an order of ipé dowels for making staffs, in .75" and 1" diameters. This is something I'm very pleased about, and have been trying to line up for a while. Ipé has pretty amazing properties that should make it an excellent staff-shaft material.

Another satisfied customer. Adam you are a SAINT for getting those in the mail before Flipside. Chicago's full moon fire jam was the other night, and I got my burn on. They hold a lot of fuel and burn for a nice long time! Thank you so much!
