New Fire Performer in Los Angeles...

Hello, I've just recently come to LA. I've been living with the yogis and pagans in the great smokey mountains...I don't have a car, and I live in the marina near venice... I'm reaching out, trying to find real people, friends, and new members of our extended family...I especially like to build fires for drum circles. I do an okay staff and single poi on a long chain...(what is that really called?) Double poi always pisses me off, because right when I think i've figured it out, I get excited, try a reverse, and then whack myself in the nuts...hurumphf...
I do have my own safety gloves and hat, I make a great back up safety person. I always like to learn new things and meet interesting humans...

learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards
and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first
quarter of 2008.

We have the great fortune that our local county Fire Marshalls have
offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

******It is time for us all to come together, as a community - to openly
create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los
Angeles area. This list can be joined by following this link:

Come out to support the first of many Sober Beach Burns this Saturday 4-14-07. DJ Troi Ge will be gifting this gathering with his amazing beats and funky soul rhythms. The location is Dockweiler State Beach. We are trying to get the northernmost pit. Note: There are two large parking lots that you can turn left into. Go to the north parking lot (or the parking lot furthest away from the entrance gate)

Parking inside the park is $5.00, the blinky-car comes around at about 10:30 and then it takes a little while longer before citations are issued. Also, we could use help with firewood. There always seems to be enough due to the generosity of those who attend.

Is there anyone that lives in the San Fernando valley thats taking that class. I live in Woodland Hills, but maybe if you live close enough I can take a bus out to you, or give you gas money, or we can work something out.

Dockweiler closed due to sewage spill?

Does this mean the park is closed or that swimmers are simply not allowed in the water?

I have been tattooing 9 years and do a wide variety of styles and custom proects. I like to meet for coffee or food first and show my portfolio, get to know one another before we begin working. I am actively involved in fairy, pagan, and native spirituality circles and am also available for ritual tattooing.
I also travel the west coast frequently. (other places less so as flying becomes more stressful, expensive, and difficult)

Hello.

On June 3rd 2007, I'm bicycling in the AIDS/LifeCycle. It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise funds for those who are trying to put an end to the ADIS epidemic.

I’m required to raise $2,500.00 and have signed an agreement with the origination committing to that amount. I’ve decided that I will make more and set my goal at $50,000.00.
Most of us know, or have known someone whose life has been affected by HIV. I have personally lost two of my childhood friends to AIDS and I have another friend who’s lived with the virus for the past 20 years. If you don’t know anyone who has the virus, you can surely see how it’s affected your life any time you’ve made love to a new partner. It’s a conversation we all have prior to sharing ourselves. The implication of the effect of AIDS lives in our choice to use condoms and other means of protection each time we engage in sexual relations.
This is not a gay disease; it is a human disease that affects us all. Here is your chance to do something about it. Help end this crisis.

Lou Genise has just been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, had 70% of his colon removed, and was just informed that it has spread throughout his lymph nodes. The prognosis from his doctors was grim, giving him a 10% chance of survival after 1 year. Lou is an amazing man who is only 35 years old.

Now being that Lou is an artist, that means that he doesn't have a health plan, 401k, or any stock options to cash in. What he does have is tremendous spirit.

Lou is not the type of person to solicit donations or ask for help. He is the type of person who would rather take it on himself. Unfortunately, he has been laid up for the last 3 weeks with a huge scar running down his stomach from the operation, and unable to move freely yet… which means he needs our help!

“The Web of Dreams” will be placed 1300ft from the man at 1:30. We will have 2 scheduled events on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 pm to midnight. The first, spider races, two people are attached at the torso creating one eight legged spider. They then have to work together to make it to the other side of the Web. The second event is Bumper bubbles. One of ten fans will fill your personal bubble with air and after it is sealed you will then bounce, bump and run into the other participates in their personal bubbles.
We got a late start on this idea but we know, with some help from the community, we can still pull it off (no fear only hope). We have most everything we need but if the opportunity to assist others in breaking through their fear and gaining more hope and possibility inspires you we invite you to become a part of the “Web Team” and help in anyway you can. One of our own needs help

Lou Genise, a member of the phoenix projekt needs help. Last week, lou was taken to the emergency room after vomiting blood. After many tests, it was determined that he had colon cancer. Now, it looks as though it has spread to his liver.
Lou does not have insurance, or any kind of 401K to cash in, he's an artist like many of us.

HELP!!!! Volunteer Fire Performers & Drummers Needed

HELP!!!!!

A friend of mine was supposed to put together a small (8-10 person) Fire Troupe for a party Friday night (June 9). I've emailed him for confirmation and haven't received any response, so at this point I'm assuming he's dropped the ball. So here's the info:

Who: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (www.lasisters.org)
What: The Nun Party (official kick-off party for LA Gay Pride)
Where: West Hollywood Park - off Robertson behind where Cobalt Cantina used to be
When: Friday June 9 - the party begins at 8, but performers and drummers are not needed until 10:15.

The Sisters are hosting an International gathering of Drag Nuns (Called "Conclave 666") this week and are hosting the official kick-off party for LA Gay Pride. The party benefits 3 different gay youth organizations: The Trevor Project (gay teen hotline), C.I.T.Y X1 (for youth by youth), and the LA Gay & Lesbian Center's Youth Project. More information about the Sisters, The Nun Party, and the beneficiaries are on their website. The Sisters are unable to pay anything for your time and talent, so that they can give as much money as possible to the charities. In lieu of monetary payment, they may be able to arrange either free or reduced-price drinks during the party.

They would like a short impromptu 15-20 minute fire show accompianied by live drummers. About 5 performers and 5 drummers should do it. They are looking for both male and female performers - while this is a party targeted to mostly gay and lesbian folks, your sexual orientation is NOT an issue! Just have FUN!

I apologize for putting this out so late, but as I said before the guy who was supposed to organize this has apparently dropped the ball and the Sisters are in dire need.

Indra Films and HoopGirl Films (Hanna, Kamala, Lester and Christabel) invite you to come be filmed rocking out at Spin Jam tonight in Hollywood! We are shooting some filler footage for our instructional videos. Join us this evening in Hollywood at Focus Fish Family Gym from 9:30-12pm. I would love to connect with friends I haven't seen in a while and play together.

You will notice a liability release on the door as you walk in which just lets you know again that we are filming, so it will not be a surprise. We will probably also slap a liability release for HOOP THE MOVIE as well, since we are already shooting and they will probably want copies. If you don't want to be included in the filming, just let us know and we will point out the areas of the spin jam which you can play and not be filmed. If you do want to be included, feel free to come dressed festively or in bright colors so your beauty can be seen!

Fire staves for sale

I have two 4' wooden staves that are light weight and perfect for beginners. I also have three 4' aluminum staves that hurt a little more when they hit you, but they feel really really good to spin...lol

All of these staves are extras from the classes I teach. They have never been lit up and are basically brand new although I am sure I gave each of them a good spinning so they didn't feel left out..haha Both wooden and aluminum staves would make a perfect double staff set if you are looking for that. I sell them to my students for $50 each, and they are well worth the money.

I have also created a breakdown contact staff that I have been spinning with for about two months now and I am extremely happy with it.. The cost of the breakdown is $90.

If you are interested in any of these please get in touch with me. I can send pictures over to anyone who would like to see them. Shipping is available.

This workshop will provide techniques to help you explore the stylish side of poi. Learn how basic changes in posture can dramatically affect any style. Learn how to hold your poi and position them in relation to your body in different ways, and learn how to add flair to your flow.

This workshop is less about behind-the-back-seven-beat-weave-hyperloop training and more about discovering the infinite possibilities of expression with simple moves. These foundational techniques can be applied to more advanced technical moves, which will also be covered in this session.

Recommended for intermediate and beyond: comfortable with forward and backward weaves, forward and backward butterflies, and turning in all directions. Bring your own poi; loaners also available.

SEAN VON STADE
Inspired by kung-fu and fantasy movies and martial arts training as a child, Sean began spinning sticks very early on. In 1996 he began spinning light-sabers at dance parties and quickly attached short cords to them so they could be used like poi, before ever having seen conventional poi spinning. By 1997 he had made his first battery-powered light-up staff to entertain his friends, and in 1998 he began spinning fire. As he was backpacking around the world at the time, he built a 3-piece travel staff that transformed into two short staves, clubs, poi, and devil-sticks, so he could train everywhere he went.

Sean has been pursuing martial arts and extreme sports and pushing the limits of movement and his body for most of his life. Striving to embody “flow” in every aspect of his life, he sees the simple act of preparing breakfast as an opportunity for efficient and creative movement. Instructing snowboarding, flowing through the trees, flowing through oncoming traffic on his rollerblades, and spinning two staves with all his heart to his favorite music are just some of the ways he hones his skills. With an education in engineering and electronics, he recently started his own company “flowtoys” and spends his days using and developing products for flow and learning the less intuitive arts of business in order to effectively share the flow that brings him so much satisfaction.

PRISNA NUENGSIGKAPIAN
Prisna has been inspiring people through poi since 1999. Her unique style has influenced countless poi spinners, several of whom have surpassed any of her poi accomplishments, such as starting notable poi schools and being lead Cirque du Soleil fire dancers.

While she can’t take credit for having invented the concept of a stick-on-a-string or using the magician’s cane as a toy, Prisna conceived the idea of dancing and expressing oneself with the flow-wand. As the other half of flowtoys, she seeks to continue bringing awesome and beautiful toys for creative expression, movement exploration and flow to the world.

Or, if you prefer, You can pay 4$ and park in the lot across the street. There is ample street parking
as well. This is a well lit, safe area. There is parking down near the
office depot, which is 1/2 a block away as well.
Jump in a shuttle, ON CENTRAL, WHERE 1ST STREET CROSSES IT. Its a 5
minute ride to the location. Shuttles will be running all night from 10:30 pm until 7 am.

We can use a warehouse, dance studio, gym, yoga studio, any type of big open space is good. let us know if you have seen anything....

Hello Beautiful Peeps, Bellydancers, Art Mavens, Fashionistas and Delirious Denizens of the Underground Dance Scene

We have a delicious Tribal-Funky Freakfest to offer you this Saturday night…It’s an art and dance party that will leave you grateful that ya mama gave you an admission ticket to life.

For years, David Starfire and I have been DJing some sweet and crazy events (mostly in the Bay Area) where Breakbeats merge with World Dance Beatz. We have been wanting to create more of these Ethno Tribal Dance events here for our Southern California Dance Community.

Shapeshifters is the first such collaboration.

At ShapeShifters there will be an indoor room devoted to Funky Breaks with local legends Patricio, Ooah, David and Christian. Then outside, on the patio, the music will be devoted to delicious groovy Breaks and Tribal Beatz with strong flavas of India, Arabia and Africa.

If you love to Belly Dance or if you love Tribal Drums and Rhythms, you will want to visit the patio! Joining me there on the World Dance Beatz Crew will be Dandelion, Imagika and Tamer.

Dandelion has DJed across much of India. DJ Imagika is a belly dancer herself. Tamer's family is from Egypt, so he knows how to support you in the shimmy and shake. I have DJed Ethno Tribal dance sets across the country for crowds of over a thousand dancers (see my tribe photo album for the fun dance pixs). So we are prepared to dish it out for ya!

At 11:00 on the patio, I will be playing a set that will be begin BellydanceFunkySensual and will build to rock your sexy asses with bootie slammin Tribal Breaks and Beatz!

Out of respect for the neighborhood, we will have to chill out the music on the patio at about 1:00 AM. --- SO IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE OUR EROTIC EXOTIC PATIO DANCE SCENE, PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY.

circus/ exotic performers needed

Ok heres the gig, its a little confusing. I am head of a video game/comic design company called Army of Mayhem. This summer we threw an art and music festival called 10 Acre Takeover and it was a hit. What we'd like to do next is make our characters come alive. One of the main characters is a necromancer in a nomadic traveling circus of experiments gone wrong. This is the troop. Once we cast the show, we will make all the costumes and necessary eye candy needed. The show is January 13th I believe (give or take a day) at the Key Club in Hollywood. The circus act will be an opener for Dr. Steel (www.doctorsteel.com) (www.myspace.com/drsteel) The Doctor has the club all to himself that night. This band is comlete with the doctor, henchmen musicans, sexy nurses and puppet show. This show is going to be big. Lots and lots of big name reps coming as well as special guest recruiters from Blue Man Group who are looking for 'a new act'. I am almost certain the place will sell out, Dr Steel has only had 2 shows and the last was was so packed the venue had to turn people away. If all goes well and everyone has fun, you are invited to join us to do it again at comicon San Diego where costumes will be entered into the contest and cash prizes are given. This is just for fun.... but everyone involved are serious about their art. Dr Steel alone requires 12 people to run the show. If youre interested in meeting with other telented artists like yourself and performing ,we would love for you to join us. Army of Mayhem currently does not make profit as we are still in the process of creating our work, however everyone works for free and we love the barter system. For example.. if you need photos done, and a makeupartist to do shots for you, we can get that done. We're all artists trying to help other artists. If you have any comments, concerns, let me know.

MEET ME ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT WITH YOUR FIRE!!!

Hello Burning People,

I am super excited to be DJing for you at the Hookadome’s Fire Spin Jam, one of Burningman’s most thrilling ethnic dance events. The fun will begin on Wednesday night, sometime after 9:00 PM. Clan Destino kicks off the night with aerial, belly dance and fire performances, and then the Fire Spin Jam begins. We will dance until kerosene runs out.... Haha!

Because this is a Hookadome outdoor dance night, I plan to spin a kick-ass set. However, to give you expressive dancers a variety of tempos to work with, the music will be punctuated with funky midtempo dance music that will make your hips get slinky and reckless.

I will be playing a melodic set of deep, bass-heavy breaks house and funk of Middle Eastern, Asian and African origin. I will also be mixing it up with Bellydance and Bhangra music you will love.

To all you African Dancers, Tribal Bellydancers and Indian Temple Dancers, you don't need to have fire tools. There will be lots of great music that will appeal to you.

Back from Europe off to Burning Man...

Hey tribe!
Kamala and I just got back from the most amazing trip to Europe. We stayed with our good friend Andy in Munich (who also happens to be a rockin' poi spinner). Then we went to Vienna, then Graz where we meet up with two amazing fire troupes In Fire & Cosmic Circles. We learned all kinds of new tricks... so watch out! We took a bus through the alps and landed in Klagenfurt where we met up with Satori (Anah & Christabel) to perform at the huge FIVB world beach volleyball tournament. We met Prince Albert, learned how to speak a little German, sunbathed topless, and of course danced danced danced. Our costumes were sooooo hot we even had to have a body guard. oy! I'll post a few pics for y'all to check out.

We're in LA for a few weeks and then off to Burning Man... We are camping with POCKET at Bouncy Bouncy 2... where is everyone else camping? We've got to organize a super duper poi off no?

Dragonflies of Summer ~ Dance Photos r' Up

Hey Silky Winged Creatures, BassNyphs & Beautiful Dance Freaks,

I just posted dance photos from Saturday's "Dragonflies in Summer" event at Space Island. Check 'm out!

I was a late pulling out my camera at the party, so nothing was recorded before 2:00 AM. But as you will see, the music was pumpin and the dance floor was rawkin way past dawn!

Thanks to Omar, Marcella, Sharon, friends and to all the performers for creating "Dragonflies". The art, the decorations and lighting were gorgeous.

Thanks to the Space Island Crew for letting us use their awesome PlayaSpace and for being such kool kats.

Also a special thanks to Stream and Tara for donating and serving a delicious pancake and waffle breakfast at dawn--in the maple syrup spirit of Black Rock City.

And finally, thanks to to everybody who came by to dance and hang out and create a funktastic eve nin!

May 30th - Introduction to Single Staff / Double Staff
This class is for those who are new to staff spinning. We'll
cover all the basics with either single staff or double staff, your preference. You must pre-order your staves - $20 - $45 depending on design.

June 6th - Single Staff II
We will be learning the basics through intermediate level moves. We'll be covering basic spins, wrist flipping, tossing, balancing, behind the back spinning, and candy-caning.

June 13th - Double Staff II
We will be learning the basics through intermediate moves. Basic spins, turning, candy- caning, wrist flipping, etc.

Hey friends,
Wizard Finger is tonight 9pm at Q-Topia, 6021 Hollywood Blvd and we've choreographed an amazing "Glow Burlesque Show". We would love nothing more than to see our favorite people in the audience ;) In addition, there is a part in the show where we'd like to have as many glow poi spinners as possible come onto stage and spin like crazy with us. If you are interested, please come and wear something black light reative if you feel like it. We usually go on between 10 - 10:30 but you are welcome to come early and rehearse or even be body painted. We'll be there starting at about 6:15. Tonights show will be in the small downstairs room near the restrooms, you enter off of Hollywood Blvd tonight.

Open fire safety seminar and demo!

The Phoenix Projekt Fire Conclave will be hosting a fire safety seminar and demo open to the community, and everyone's invited to attend. A Marx Bros. representative (no relation to Groucho, Chico, Harpo, or Gummo) will be on hand to demonstrate proper use and handling of extinguishers, as well as to share knowledge from one of the most respected names in the fire safety business.

Points to be covered include, but are not limited to:

*Proper use, storage, and handling of safety equipment and fuels.
*Which type of extinguisher to use on which type of fire.
*Flash and flame points of various fuels, and discerning the differences between these.
*Regulations (county and otherwise) governing safety equipment and practices.

Finally, at the end of the course, each person will take a turn choosing an extinguisher and using it to put out a contained 6' x 6' inferno. (And if you think spinning fire is exciting - as it definitely is - just wait 'til you get to put a huge one out!)

The fee for the class is $15, which covers recharging of equipment as well as the chemical replacement.

The location is: 10275 Sunland Blvd., in Shadow Hills (just off the 210 fwy.) The time and date will be June 12th, at 12:00 noon. Richard (the Marx Bros. rep) will notify the fire dept. of the event. See you there!

In this workshop we will provide the materials and show you how to create your very own custom fit Fire Fingers that would normally cost you over $100 to buy! Feel free to bring your favorite music, maybe something to drink, and your good energy!
