I just moved to Tallahassee from Providence, RI. I havent been hooping recently, but I'm really looking forward to getting back into it. Are there any other hoopers in the area? I'm moving into a new house next week with a big backyard and would love to have people over to hoop with me!

Want to Meet HoopGirl???

Hello FL Hooper Friends!

I have some exciting news! As you may know, Christabel (a.k.a. HoopGirl) will be here this weekend for teacher training. At the end of the three-day event, we plan to celebrate with a big hoop jam at the Treasure Island Drum Circle. Come out on Sunday (6/22 - weather permitting) to meet and hoop with Christabel!!! We understand that not everyone who may have wanted to attend teacher training was able to do so. I think it's super cool that she's coming out to our drum circle to hang with locals :) Let's hoop it up this Sunday and show her that the scene is alive and well in FL!

Speaking of the teacher training, Jodie, Jessica and myself from Hoola Monsters will all be attending/ participating. So, after we receive our HoopGirl teacher certifications, we will begin to teach the HoopGirl workout in St. Pete, Clearwater and Tampa. Stay tuned for class schedules. In the meantime, we hope to see your beautiful faces on the beach this Sunday!

Exciting News for Florida Hoopers!

HoopGirl is coming to the Sunshine State!

For the first time ever, Christabel will be hosting a HoopGirl teacher training workshop on the East Coast. The 3-day event will take place June 20-22 in St. Petersburg, FL at the Roberts Recreation Center (located at 1246 50th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33703). For those unfamiliar, St. Pete is located just outside of Tampa on Florida's west coast.

I wanted to give you all a heads up, as we're planning to make this teacher training event one of the biggest and best yet! I will be posting this information on the main hula hooping tribe early next week. The registration link should be live in the next few days, so check out hoopgirl.com for more information and for registration details. And if you have any questions about where to stay during your visit to St. Pete, just let me know. I would be happy to provide you with recommendations and /or show you around while you're here :)

Hooping in St Pete?

I'm heading down there June 11 for a vacation and I'm wondering if there is anywhere to bring along my hoop and maybe meet some people? I'm staying with my grandmother so I would love to meet people a little younger lol who are into hooping, dancing, house music, anything like that. Also, are there any good dance clubs around? I'd love to hear some American DJ's and see what's going on in the house scene there - maybe bring along my hoop...

Miami hoopers/workshops, anyone?

Hey, I live in Miami, which is supposed to be a cultural and happening city, but it's really not because I cannot find any hoopers here. I just started hooping in mid-to-late April (3 weeks ago?). I dabbled in a bit of yoga, but I picked up hooping when I bought a hoop for my 3 year old sister at the dollar store and decided I wanted to give it a shot. I found some helpful tutorials on youtube and then became a semidedicated hooper these past weeks.

So any hooping classes or individual Miami hoopers want to get together? Give me a reply, I'll try to check this thing if possible.

New FL Hoop Tribe

I've just created a new Florida hoop tribe. Please join me at tribes.tribes.net/hoolamonsters.

As you may have noticed, our FL Funkshine moderator (Alexis) is not very active in the online community anymore. I see her often, and while she's still a phenomenal hooper (and a constant inspiration), her Tribe presence is pretty much non-existant these days.

Therefore, I've decided to start a new Florida-based hooping tribe under the name Hoola Monsters. This is an extension of Hoola Monsters, Inc. (a St. Petersburg/ Tampa/ Clearwater-based company that specializes in hoops, costumes, performances and more). Please join us so we can keep you posted on upcoming events and hoola happenings.

And if any of you beautiful hoopers are ever in our area, please let us know! We'd love to hoop it up with ya!

Orlando Group Hoop?

Any hooping events going on in the Orlando area? A friend of mine just got her first hoop and we want to join in on a group hoop soon so she can learn from other people.. I know Dandelion has hoopers at their moon drum circles and Lacy and Brooke had something going on with the Campus Hooping Initiative.. but I haven't kept up and have no idea what's coming up next.

Tues. Night Hoop Group

Hello!

I just wanted to let you guys know that I host weekly Tues. evening hoop gatherings at my house in St. Pete. My girl friends come over & we typically put on music and hoop in my back yard. I've got extra hoops availalbe, if anyone needs to borrow one. The more, the merrier! If you're interested in joining us, just send me a message & I'll give you directions to my house.

I've been going to the Treasure Islando drum circle on Sunday nights. And I also met a hooper who works at the Rare Olive in DT St. Pete. During the week, this bar is hoop friendly. They re-arrange the lounge area to make room for hooping. I think we should all get together there sometime as well. Maybe Thursday nights? Just let me know if you guys are interested in any of these get togethers :) I hope to see you soon!

Just a short intro...

I'm not a hooper - but def interested in hooping.
I am actually a bellydancer that is opening a new studio in Dunedi,n FL
Alternative dance and exercise is what is offered - and I think hooping would be a wonderful thing to have/add.
Plan on studio being not just a teaching studio - but a performing studio.

Any hooping instructors in the Tampa Bay Area interested in teaching a couple of classes a week?

Hi Guys!

I hope you all had a very happy holiday season with family and friends! I just wanted you to know that I'm re-instating the Tuesday hoop groups at my house, now that the holidays are over. We had to take a couple weeks off from our regular get togethers due to Christmas and New Year's.

I had the chance to meet up with a bunch of you lovelys for some DT St. Pete hooping last week (including our Funkshine moderator, Alexis ;). There are so many beautiful hoopers in our area, and I feel blessed to have finally connected with many of you in person. We had so much fun tearing up downtown together, and I can't wait to do it again!

Not only are Tuesdays back in session, but we've got a couple girls who will be bringing their fire hoops to my house also. AND - I got a brand new PSI hoop for Christmas :) So, if you haven't made it over for a Tues night yet, you're missing out! Come play with us! Just send me a message and I'll shoot you my address. We usually get together from about 7 to 9:30 -10. And if you've got certain music that you would like to hear, please bring your CDs. If anyone has an iPod speaker hook up, that would be awesome too! I hope to see you soon!

Also, I'm going to buy some tubing at Lowe's while I'm there so I can make hoops for my cousin's wedding. Is there a "best" store to buy it, or is the tubing plentiful?

I'm looking for a male hooper to join me on a film shoot in Palm Beach, Florida on June 10th. I will be flying in to this area to do a 3 minute shoot to promote BodyHoops and the hoopla in general. I was hoping to have a "guy" hooper in the background of the set to show that Yes! men can hoop too!...anyways, if any of you guys are interested in being a part of this project, please message me or if any of you girls know of a cool guy candidate that may be interested, please pass the word along. Ring of Fire

This past weekend, I was lucky enough to meet up with another member of this tribe at a great music festival in north Fla. Lara Eastburn and I chatted back and forth for a while before I headed up and she headed down to Quincy, FL for the Down on the Farm festival. I just wanted to post here and tell you all what a beautiful sharing experience we had together. When I first found her Friday night, it was completely accidental...I saw a hoop that looked like it was white on off/white, so I bent over to take another look, and when I looked up, there was Lara! And the hoop was an LED hoop that she made herself. Ever since I got my PSI hoop, I've been dying for the chance to try it with another LED hoop at the same time, so this was exciting news to me. We got to hooping right away and soon discovered that even though we had a similar flow, we could still learn from each other, which we did. Later in the weekend we even started experimenting with some almost coreoghraphed dancing--kind of like quickly mimicking each other as soon as we could tell which trick was about to happen. My favorite was when we discovered that we could face each other and vertical hoop with our right hands and simultaneously pass the hoops to each other's left hands. Eventually, we headed back to camp to get her fire hoop. I was giddy with anticipation and had never even seen a fire hoop other than videos or pictures. We got clearance from the owner of the property to do it right there in the music field, so during an incredible band called Soular System, we lit her up and I got to see my first ever fire-hooping. I was hoping she would let me give it a whirl, but I never expected her to stop mid-burn and hand it over to me. I took the hoop without trepidation and hurled it around my body like I wasn't nervous at all (I was-just a bit). But soon, the exhiliration took over, and I couldn't stop myself from doing the tricks I so love to do, even taking a cue from Lara herself and getting down on my knees (I didn't realize it was possible to fire hoop around your neck before I saw her do this). When I finally spun all the wicks out, this crowd of people was around yelling and cheering for me, and all I wanted was to find Lara so I could give her the biggest hug ever. As soon as I did, all the energy and emotion created during the firedance burst out of me in a flood of tears and my knees weakened and I just sort of layed there on the grass crying and laughing and shuddering with all these beautiful people looking down at me and touching my hands. I have never felt such a pure shining energy in my life, and I don't think that particualr rush of the first time can ever be captured again. I ended up doing it five times throughout the weekend, and I can't thank Lara enough for being the one to open that door for me. She is truly a fire goddess and her light shines much brighter than any eight wicks could possibly compete with.

Green Lemon rocks our world!

This past Sunday, the founding members of the FunKshine Hoopers (Lindsay, Christa, Jessica, and myself) got to see Green Lemon @ The Bank in St. Petersburg for the third time, and once again, they gave us everything we were hoping for and more. The enrgy and pure talent that these amazing musicians bring to the stage is so overwhelming--you just can't stop moving. I mean, you don't even pee until there's a set break. It was so exciting to get to see my favorite band live AND dance with my PSIhoop (17 LEDs-yippee!) and to finally get to share PSIhoops privelages with somebody. My girls have come so far and gotten so incredibly good at hooping, that I don't have any qualms at all letting them use this pricey hoop (it was a gift) any time they want. When I first got it, I let people use it and it came back to me not working, so I've been very reluctant to share it again---anyway, I'm straying from my topic here-just had to say it again...Green Lemon is now my ultimate favorite band...I've been on www.archive.org since the day after the show downloading previous shows. The only thing I can say that I think sucks about a GL show is its inevitable finish. Just yesterday (3 days later) Christa and I were lamenting the fact that we probably won't get to see them for a little while and all we wanted to do was go back to Sunday night.

Hi there! My dad is in miami beach and my mom is in key west, so I am there a couple times a year but have never connected with any local hoop community.... so I just wanted to join this tribe so I can stay connected!

Hey! Thanks for checking out my new tribe! Of course I love the Hula Hooping tribe as much as the next gal, but I thought the time was right to start a more local tribe. I'm sure I'm not the only person in Florida who has wished there were more hoopers or that I knew where they were (I'm sure you guys are out there somewhere). I figured that since I'm pretty much right in the middle of the state, this would be a good place to start. And of course we have this nice drum circle every Sunday right on the beach--don't you want to make a little road trip? ;)
