Hey All,

We need to do a quick headcount if we can of who plans on attending the burn. A couple of reasons: 1) just to have a general idea who to watch for and 2) figure out if we have enough room at Chez Hitching Post to accomadate our refugee camp.

For those of you who weren't aware, the townhouse in Green River is still available and several of us are planning on crashing there for the weekend. We still have water, heat, etc, but nothing in the way of furniture.....so plan to bring cots, air mattresses, towels, washclothes, etc. if you plan on crashing at Chez Hitching Post with us.

So far on the list:

Doost
Ogre
TronaFaerie
Bystander
Oz
Horse Lady
Mike 28
WanderingCherie(?)
CelticShaman(?)
Bush Boy(?)

You can contact me off list if you prefer

Lotsa Love,

Flaming Joe Survival Guide

Flaming Joe Burn 2007 Survival Guide
October 27, 2007

What is this?
The Flaming Joe Burn is an artistic expression promoting community building, artistic awareness, free-expression, and just about any other idea you can think of. This event came from two burning desires of the artist: 1) Promote a brighter, happier, shinier, and more socially aware culture within Wyoming, and 2) BURN SOMETHING! to help promote the ideas and expression of similar events.

Who is ultimately responsible for this?
OK, so that’s cool, but is someone in charge? ABSOLUTELY NOT! YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR OWN ACTIONS!
This event is merely an exhibition of an artistic nature. The artist has provided a piece to be burned, no additional responsibility is granted or implied.

What else should I know?
This event adheres to the tenants of the BLM’s Leave No Trace program. What you bring with you, you must take out to an approved disposal facility. Quite frankly, this site needs all the help it can get, and everyone is encouraged to pack out that “little bit extra”.
There is a restroom facility at this site, however, IF IT DOESN’T COME OUT OF YOUR BODY, DON’T PUT IT IN THE POTTY! Given the way that this facility works, and its proximity to the beautiful Flaming Gorge…DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT PUTTING GARBAGE IN THE POTTY!

How do I get there?
The Lost Dog camping area is located 16 miles from Green River, WY.
Coming from the West or East:
Take I-80 exit 91 to Green River. When coming down the off-ramp, keep to the right, making the turn over the overpass. You are now on Wyoming 530. Continue through Green River, southbound. Once you leave the city limits of Green River, Lost Dog (watch for the sign) will be a left hand turn 6 mi. from town. Follow the dirt road 10 miles to “the gorge”….you won’t be able to miss us once you are there.

What do I bring?
1.	Each vehicle must have a Flaming Gorge use pass from the Ashley National Forest. If your vehicle is spotted without one, you can be fined, jailed, and/or removed from the Recreation Area. This link will help you find a pass vendor if you are unable to pick one up in Green River: http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/ashley/passes/pass_vendors.shtml It would also be advisable to refer to your activity in the area as a "get together with friends" if you are asked. Since we have no association with any official organization, this is the truth...and we want to avoid any excessive scrutiny by law enforcement if we can.
a.	The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area office is located on Uinta Drive (Wyoming 530) in Green River on the south end of town. Passes can also be obtained at Maverick or Ace hardware in Green River.
b.	Office hours are Mon-Sat 8:00am-4:30pm.
c.	Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area has a use fee of $2.00 per day; $5.00 for 16 days or $20.00 for an annual pass.
2.	An Open Mind!
3.	Enough food and water for all in your party. Finger foods and snacks work best.
4.	Warm clothing in layers. Wyoming is treacherous this time of year, it can be very warm during the day, and below freezing at night.
5.	Someway to light yourself at night (flashlight, headlamp, glo-stick, etc.)
a.	DON’T BE A DARKWAD!
At night, anyone and everyone who isn’t lit in some fashion will be extremely difficult to see and collisions can and do occur.
6.	Bright, fun costumes. Dress appropriately for the season. This is hunting season in Wyoming. While no-one should be hunting in this area, idiocy abounds. Wear bright colors, avoiding tan, brown, black, and anything that can cause you to be mistaken for wildlife!
7.	Fun noisemakers! Drums, samba shakers (two cans taped together with rice inside), rain sticks, flutes, etc.
8.	Garbage bags – in keeping with the Leave No Trace philosophy, you are responsible for your own garbage.
9.	Anything else your heart will desire in this picturesque (a camera?) setting.

What don’t I bring?
1.	A Bad attitude!
2.	Pets. It has been previous experience that pets can cause all sorts of problems. Leave them at home!
3.	Flammable liquids, hazardous materials, etc. This is just common sense for most of us, but we have all seen stranger things!
4.	Fireworks. The discharge of fireworks is prohibited within national recreation areas.
5.	Firearms. Firearms pose a danger to anyone and everyone at this event. Given that this is the height of hunting season, if you do have a firearm in your vehicle, LEAVE IT THERE!

Begging, Pleading, etc.
Construction of the rune will begin at about 9:00am on October 27th. If you have any wood to bring, please do….the site has two hungry fire rings in addition to the burn pyre. If you have an extra bucket you can bring, this would be most helpful too.

Some Words of Caution
No survival guide is complete without a few words of caution. So here goes with some common problems:
1.	If you drink – designate. For many this will be a unique trek into a very unique setting. The roads are a) unfamiliar and b) not that good. It would be best to be at your full capacity to navigate this terrain.
2.	Ask before you touch. These types of events can be extremely sexually charged. Always ask before you touch, and remember to respect boundaries. NO, MEANS NO!
3.	Use common sense….and don’t cloud your judgment. “I was so messed up on {insert appropriate chemical here} that I didn’t realize what I was doing…” usually doesn’t hold up so well if you end up in court.

A Final Reminder
This event should be a wonderful and peaceful environment for all!
Remember, you are responsible for yourself, your well being, and your actions at all times!
Enjoy, have fun, and let’s burn this sucker down!

Hey All,

Just a quick one to let you know the plan is still on to burn Flaming Joe at Lost Dog on Oct. 27th. As before, this will be a renegade event...nothing sanctioned, nothing really controlled, just remember to get your Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area pass at least for the day. Just a bunch of us getting together for the burning of this art piece. I don't have to many plans to deviate from last year's method....breakfast, lunch, dinner, burn...then back to Green River. It doesn't look like the condo will be sold then, so the plan is to air mattress/cot it for a sleepover. Lemme know what you all think.

Hey All,

It has been one helluva spring and Summer is officially here, so figured, I, as moderator, best bring you all up to date on the happenings with the Wyoming Burn.

I'm gonna go pour me another Akvavit and tonic before I begin, just in case I need to stop crying....

As most of you know the past 6-8 months of all (those of us in Wyoming) of our lives have been a literal train wreck! I myself had aquired almost 100 hours of overtime YTD before June 1, 2007 and many of you have had sympathy pains of the worst design. Needless to say, the fallout of having6 days off in 2007 in the first half of the year had a horrific effect on our core group.

A couple of weeks ago, I resigned my desire and running to be considered as Regional Contact for Wyoming with Burning Man, LLC. Our number was up, and in a way I blew it, but I think happiness and sanity for those of us involved is a lot more important than the charter. It was a tough decision, but with my life most likely leading me outside of Wyoming, I felt it was only the right thing to do. If Wyoming is to have a regional charter with Burning Man, LLC, it will have to be coordinated by a resident of the state that is a burner. If anyone is willing to step up to the plate, I encourage them to do so, and I'll be more than happy to put you in touch with Bex and many of the fine folks at Burning Man Regionals and help you coordinate the things you need to (honestly in Wyoming, they ain't much, especially if you interface well with BLM and Forest Service).

So now onto the burning of the now slightly infamous Flaming Joe..... I have a couple of thoughts on the matter and need some input. If I do end up in SLC as planned, Lost Dog is not a huge treck (200 miles), and I still have a fondness for the area and the things that have happened to me there (recently some friends I have not seen in a long time came to visit and reminded me what a wonderful and beautiful place it is)....and I would like to return to Lost Dog for one last hurrah with my friends and celebrate the beginning of this new chapter of my life and the closing of a very dark and confusing one....I'm sure we can all make it happen if we want to...and honestly, I want it to, it seems only fitting that Joe rest in ashes at the very place that inspired him. If that doesn't seem like something everyone would care to do, I'm always up for burning him at Utah Solstice but will need to enlist the help of several of you that will be there as I have grand designs for a Solstice piece as well......I'm not repeating my e11 2007 experience....on Joe, I will be the one lighting him and will need tons of help with perimeter, etc...as he is designed with the sole intent and purpose of being a Wyoming pyrotechnic sepctacular.

The date is still on my calendar as October 27th...objections, suggestions, please forward them. I need all the advice I can get on this one!

Lotsa Love,
Also, got the phone call last night, Flaming Joe (you know that crazy man on a horse thing) is now an officially registered playa art installation for Burning Man 2007! Go me, yeah, I'm being a glory hog here....I'm awful damn proud of that thing!

Update from E-11, today's meeting 3/18/2007

Hey Flamers,

Ok, now that the PBR has been opened, the vocal trance is blaring, and I've regained conciousness from arriving home to a huge and disgusting doggy mess here's this installment of "The TronaFaerie Speaks"

++++TOC++++
Element 11
General - Volunteer BITCHES! GypPsy you should read this!)
Effigy
Center Camp
Tickets
Anti-M's Weirdness Collective

Flaming Joe
In the works
Some Thoughts

Burning Man
WTF are we doing?

+++++++++Element 11++++++++++++++

The general gist of what is going on with E-11 is the usual, volunteer PLEASE! If you plan to have a few spare hours out at "Soda Rock" be sure to let Queen Mab or The Dave23 know. They can use all the help they can get. The big area of concern, as it would seem, is greeters. Delelama may not be able to participate as coordinator this year, so if you can help with greeters, perimeter, etc, be sure to let them know! That and greeters is a new pet project of mine (I'm planning a shift at BRC this year)....so you could earn tons of brownie points with people you don't even know on this one!

There is also a call out for a "main act" performer/band this year. In years past these things were taken care of well in advance, but over the past couple of years, its more or less been an ad-hoc sort of thing. If you, or someone you know, has the equipment, the time, and the energy to come out as a performer, please do! Queen Mab and Dave23 can let you know more on that. GyPsy, this is something I thought you might be interested in.....just a thought...contact me if you are interested and need ticket, etc. I'm also interested to see what Anulama is up to. I'll attempt contact with them, but if someone has more intimate knowledge of/with them, and this is something they might be interested in, let them know!

The Emerald City design plan looks AWESOME! This thing is going to be amazing and probably make this event one of the best Element 11's on record! Again, I'll defer you all to QM and D23 if you can help....they'll be able to point you in the right direction for the folks who are putting it together....in my usual excitement, I forgot to catch names.

While we're on the subject of effigy, let me clear up a source of confusiont for a few folks. The proposed Wyoming Burn piece has been referred to as "Flaming Joe". Flaming Joe is a burn piece, yes, but it will not be burned at E-11. Flaming Joe, the sculpture, is slated to travel from E-11 to BRC to FJAC. His final immolation will take place on the west arm of the Lost Dog beach on October 27. The piece that will be burned at E-11 has been code named "The Door". The door should be a pretty emotional and amazing piece for those of us that work on it..... I hope that clears it up for everyone!

Also, Peter (aka Backbone) is looking for help with Center Camp for E-11. I'm shying away on this one (personal feelings, sorry folks), but if you are interested in art of any type or helping, he's the guy you want to get in touch with. My own belief is that E-11 Center Camp will do more of what BRC Center Camp was originally intentioned to do, so it should prove to be a very worthwhile and fun experience.

Tickets for E-11 are available. Queen Mab mad a post a bit earlier on this list regarding them. Everything you need to know is there. And I don't know if it mentioned it, but gift/scholarship tickets are still available, I believe the cut-off is May 18, so if you are in a bit of a financial quandry, but are able to make the event, this is certainly an option. I can't reiterate enough what a wonderful, loving, caring, and giving group of people this is....so don't be ashamed to ask, even better, no one needs to know just how you got through the gate, just that you had a ticket.

Anti-M's Weirdness Collective is growing by leaps and bounds, and I'm very proud to say Wyoming is playing a huge part in this. We are a big part of "The Theme Camp to End Theme Camps" at E-11 and its going to be off the hook! As it stands right now, we are seeking lots of stuff....old clothing/costumes for the "Closet" and sculptures for the "Municipal Ordiance Violation". One note about the Municipal Ordiance Violation (MOV) is that pretty much any and all art that can stand on its own (ie paintings will need easels that can be anchred) is welcomed, but it IS NOT up for adoption. Think of it as a petting zoo for art. This is also a huge infrastructure undertaking, so if you have any type of yard decorations (appropriately disfugured), art, piles of junk (OK, that's a joke, but a broken down old car would be funny as hell), solar lighting, low power lighting, hell, lighting in general that we can use, be sure to let Anti-M know as it will be much appreciated!

+++++++++++Flaming Joe++++++++++++++

As it stands right now, we are awaiting another reply from the Forest Service regarding our use of the Lost Dog beach for our little event. Thus far, the primary concern has been population. Unfrotunately, we don't really have an option on this one, and we will be required to put a population cap in place. Tenatively, we are slating for 50 people....as things develop we may need to increase that number, if it exceeds 75, we're into a whole different arena for getting this thing permitte, and oddly, it'll actually be easier. There are a few other issues that need to be adressed as time progresses, but those are entirely secondary to the FS's primary concern about population.

So here's where this gets really tricky for us. We are on an EXTREMELY limited budget in both money and manpower. As of right now, we have 3 (yes, that's not a typo, three) people dedicated to making this work. Now add onto that, that we want to make this as much of a labor of love as possible and you can see the problem....not to mention accounting on such an endeavor would be a PITMFA! So the plan now is that we will have a very limited gate and perimeter most likely composed of 1 greeter and everyone will need to RSVP for the event. No RSVP, no exceptions! The RSVP form, when completed is going to be a bitch, I'm not going to lie, and will require a small amount of $$$ (at most $3-20, or a waiver that you have a pass) to cover the Recreation Area Passes for each vehicle (another FS mandate, but it does go to support the area and local Rec. Area infrastructure, so we're not too worried about where that money goes).

I think that wraps it up on the ramblings about Flaming Joe....it makes me head hurt a bit, but this is, to quote a very drunken episode at FJAC 2006, "who we are, this is what we do!"

++++++++++++Burning Man+++++++++++

Oh yeah, did we mention this is a Burner tribe....LOL! Burning Man is still a bit away, but its never to early to start thinking/planning. The FJAC core group knows what's up for our addition to Anti-M's, but we'd like to hear from the rest of you! What are you doing, what are you planning? We'd love to know where you live so we can come harrass you!

OK, the PBR is done...so its time to get another and assualt my buddies in other blogs/listservs.

Lotsa Love,

Update on Flaming Joe progress

Hey All,

Well, well, well, can you believe its already the middle of March? I know KY and I are in disbelief at how quickly this first quarter has disappeared. Now onto the business....

Permitting is in progress. Thus far, we've recieved an AOK from the local sheriff's department and are awaiting a bit more information from the Forest Service. So far the only real concern we've been up against is attendance. We realize this will be a tiny event (I believe the 50 people we quoted the Forest Service is a pipe dream), but they are very concerned we'll blow over the 75 people mark. For those of you who don't know, 75 people is the max allowed by Federal Law to use Forest Service land without a formal permit. Does anyone have any creative suggestions on how we should go about ensuring our population isn't over the top? A formal ticketing process = money we don't really have to spend.....so what do you all think we should do? There are also some concerns about additional pieces to be burned, that we will probably address in a Survival Guide update in April.

I also went ahead and procured us some web-space! Right now its a "Coming Soon" page at http://www.geocities.com/wyoburn as the nick Flaming Joe was already taken. I'm not entirely sure how/when updates will come along, but I'll keep you posted.

As it stands right now, we won't be talking a whole lot more with Burning Man Regionals about a charter or other information. The general tone of things is that we're putting the cart before the horse...so Utah, I'm hoping to rely on your guidance and wisdom as things progress, please bear with me while I drive you guys nuts, and when you've had enough, be sure to tell me so.

And a final note, its already that time folks, we need to start having regular get-togethers to keep us on track. Any recommendations on where/when we want to do this? I can't speak for KY, but our dining room table comfortable holds 6ish...... so I'm advancing the idea of formalizing our usually informal "meetings of the minds".

Lotsa Love,

Update from E-11 Meeting today

Hey All,

Just a quick note to let you know what's going on with our neighbors to the West.

Today was the volunteer meeting, meaning we signed you all up to do menial tasks and destroy your first burn experience...I jest, of course, but if any of you do want to add yourselves to the lists, contact Queen Mab. I think a full listing is or will be posted to the E-11 list soon.

There was also some discussion of helping out a few folks in the community make it to BMan...namely the folks that own Seabase and let us use their land for our fun. Both KY and myself voiced our support for such a motion.

TICKETS, TICKETS, TICKETS! OK, for those of you who are sweating it about tickets, here's a bit more info. Ticket sales will begin on March 18, at the Tier-1 of $25...increasing over time to $50 at the gate, no tickets will be sold the week before the event. E-11 also provides scholarship tickets....so those of you who are interested, but low on the $$, don't hesitate to contact them and see what they can do. (Yes, I'm targeting a few of you noobs who are doing the whole broke college kid thing).

Also, E-11 is accepting ticket art designs until March 1. The chosen design's designer will recieve 2 tickets to the event....so here's another chance for those of you who can draw to make it. It was indicated that submissions are few, so chances are good, if you have a good design, you can attend on E-11's nickel.

Wayward Hushvillans, lots of exchange with Anti-M and Herlarry.... We've got a good handle on things, but remember, YOU MUST BE AUTONOMOUS! We are really pushing this....so don't expect anyone to take care of you, you are your own, no one is going to babysit you. Also, there is discussion ongoing about what to do with our camp for E-11. This is going to be a large camp....but you must be able to survive on your own. We are going to be an official theme camp this year, so we're looking for lots of DNA (Do Not Adopt) art for around camp, namely sculptures. KY and I will try and whip out a few in addition to our art pieces, but the more we bring, the more we light (as in lights, not fire), the more crazy, fun, and psychedlic our camp, the more fun and interactivity we will have with our fellow "Soda Rockers"....BTW, I nicknamed Seabase, "Soda Rock City".

And a note on burning art. Smaller burns are kinda/sorta blanketed in the permits, but be advised, if you are brining larger art (footprint of larger than 10 sq. ft or over 5ft tall) you need to be in touch with Dave23 and Mab by the middle of March. Their permits need to be filed and complete by April 1, and its only polite to let them know you're burning a 600ft tall pile of plastic coated in formaldehyde with PCB laden transormers in the center well in advance of their deadline. Trust me, they'll be super appreciative....

So looks like E-11 is going to be AMAZING AGAIN! And please, those of you who can/want to volunteer, do so....and let's make the "Wyoming Annex" really shine as a member of the Burning Man Family.

Lotsa Love,

I was mistaken, E-11 tickets went on sale March 1. Teir-1 is available until Apr. 1...so get 'em early! Which reminds me, we all need to get together sometime and gameplan a bit. We'll also have RodeHard coming with us and possibly HorseLady, so its going to be a full, FULL vanload of freakie-fun!

My friend Fig pointed out this tribe... I actually live in San Diego, but I went to junior high and high school in Casper, and did a 2 year stint at UW. Here's a weird one.. one of my burner friends down here, who is asian too ended up being from Laramie. I thought of starting an "asian guys from wyoming who participate at burningman and went to high school in the early 80's" tribe, but figured we'd get sick of looking at each other. Good luck with your event.

Tonight's e-mail to BRC regionals

I haven't heard from you guys in a while and need to touch base on a couple of things before I/we fuck up royally. I realize its a very busy time for you and appologize in advance if we are wasting your time.

My big question is the use of the Burning Man name when discussing with authorities regarding a planned event here in Wyoming. Thus far, we have branded ourselves as, "an unofficial, non-sanctioned, Burning Man-type event, pursuing a charter." Let me know if we need to cease and disist with such a label and simply call ourselves a bunch of idiots gettting together to burn something.....I think everyone in our core group would be OK w/ such a label.

The secondary question is if there is any type of referral that can be given to local authorities. Thus far, the Sheriff's department has told us that they "don't really care, but please let dispatch know there will be activity in the Lost Dog area on Oct 26-28 so we don't dispatch a handful of deputies only to find everything is AOK." We are in the process of working with the Forest Service. Their primary permit/exemption liason for the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is out of the office until next week, but we are anticipating a speedy reply as they were very excited that we are planning early on. Being in the middle of no-where Wyoming, not many folks have a clue WTF Burning Man is, the Forest Service included, and I'm curious if the Winnemuca BLM office (or another source) might be able to give us a good referral that we are OK people. The primary concern here, since we have had Rainbow gatherings in the area in the past, is that we will be viewed with disdain. The Rainbows are not especially popular people in this neck of the woods....namely the slit-trench potties that wiped out a small forest and the drugged-out weirdos that showed up in a town of about 200 people asking for money, drugs, etc.

We've been working extra hard on our Element 11 (Utah) projects, Burning Man projects, and of course our own lil' adventure here. If you need any additional information on what we're up to/planning, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Lotsa Love,

Hey All,

Just a quick update on today's happenings with the Flaming Joe Event. Our beloved Kilted Yak tackled things by the horns and got stuff rolling on permitting. Thus far, we have a go-ahead from the local Sheriff's office and a preliminary go-ahead from the Forest Service. We'll know more from the Forest Service in the next week as the actual person who does permitting/exemptions, etc will be back in the office.

In an interesting reply from the Sheriff's office, we were more or less told, "We don't want to have to deal with you unless we have to..." We do have to contact them 2 weeks to a month in advance so they can register it with dispatch. Essentially this is a courtesy to let them know something is going on, so they can act accordingly to reports of activity in that area. This DOES NOT mean we won't get a visit from PD.....in all reality, this may very well encourage the cops to come out and have a "lookey see" in lieu of the usual donut stop.

We've got a bit more work to do regarding Forest Service use, but as of right now we are off on a very good foot with them. An interesting issue was brought up regarding Lost Dog....like our counterparts in Utah, we have chosen a site that is a mish-mash of Private, BLM, and FS land. As it stands right now, they are very grateful for our upfront approach and look forward to helping us put together a great event!

So YAY! Flaming Joe is off to a great start for 2007! Hope to see you all there.

Hey All,

Well, since it is doubtful we'll be able to get to SanFran, KY and I are thinking about hosting a Burnal Equinox (March 3) party of our own...complete with Burning Man Trivia, disco lights, and maybe a bit of art.....

Realizing a couple of our core folks will most likely be working that evening we're thinking of an afternoon get together and those of us who can will stay up all night drinking and being hooligans.... We're torn on an exact location right now, if the weather is good, we'd like to do it out at our homebase of Lost Dog...if not, Casa del Hippy Van seems only appropriate....

He's much to large (about 6.5 feet) to assemble in the basement, so I'm debating a test run this weekend.
Advice on the write-up

Hey All,

I need some input regarding the write-up for my Burning Man 2007 piece. Here's what I've come up with. Any and all criticism and or praise would be much appreciated.

Flaming Joe found his beginning shortly after Burning Man 2006. In a quest to express a unique perspective on the fusion of Burner and Mid-Western/Rocky Mountain cultures, TronaFearie made a small sketch of The Man atop a horse, using the Wyoming Bucking Horse and Rider as inspiration. Coincidentally, Flaming Joe follows the 2007 theme by exploring the relationship between man and beast, namely beasts of burden, and exploring man's continued expansion. In keeping with the Green Man, the wood used in his construction is 100% post-consumer; wood otherwise destined for the landfill.

Lotsa Love,

Does anyone out there do web stuff? I started preusing the 2006 art installation application and ran across the recommendation for a web link. Anyone up to the task? Lemme know...

BTW, construction has begun, Joe's first leg is complete.

Some notes on Solstice Etiquette

Hey All (esp. noobs),

Figured I'd throw a semi-friendly post out there with a bit of etiquette for those of you coming to your first burn at Utah's Sosltice Burn. This way you won't make some of the same opps mistakes that I have and end up pissing people off and having mortal enemies for life due to ignorance. While our Burn was a bit more laid back w/ a communal burn spot, Seabase is a bit of a different critter.

1) Ask before you touch....same general rule as our small burn here.

2) Smokers, burn cans/pyres are not your personal ashtray. Butts go in your pocket or somewhere else until you are at an appropriate receptical. Also be mindful of other's around you....one of our friends is deathly allergic to tobacco smoke, so be a polite smoker!

3) Trash goes in its appropriate place (home with you)....same as with butts, cans and pyres are not communal places to burn stuff. Especially plastics and glass will piss people off really fast...plastics smell bad when they burn, and glass can explode and is a bitch to clean-up.

4) Drink responsibly.....I'll admit, this is a bit more do as I say, not as I do, but I'm planning sobriety as I'll be burning that night.

5) Have a good time! I know I bitch and mother too much, more than anything it is to see you all have a good time!

On that note, FLAME ON!

Lotsa Love,

Trona

Tux and I will be in touch w/ those of you ride-sharing with us as we need to get together before, I'm thinking Wed. and cement plans.

Update on Element 11 Solstice Burn

Ganked from the Element 11 list:

Our 5th Annual Winter Solstice Burn will be taking
place on Saturday December 16th. As in previous years
our Winter Burn will be taking place at Bonneville
SeaBase, about 1 hour West of Salt Lake City. The
event begins at 3:00 pm and continues through
midnight, at which time the front gate will be closed
and locked.

Please don’t arrive before 3:00pm unless you’ve made
previous arrangements, or plan on assisting with the
event in some fashion. We’ll be burning a giant Sun
Sculpture around 8:30 pm. Hopefully, there will also
be more art burns before and after the Big Sun Burn.

Admission to the Winter Solstice Burn will be $15 per
person at the gate. This includes use of one of their
thermal swimming holes ‘The Abyss’; a covered
diving pool which is about 63 feet deep and generally
maintained at around 79 Degrees. Overnight camping
will be available during the event with a $3 per
person fee if paid in advance or a $10 fee if not paid
until the morning after the event. There will also be
a limited number of Scamps (Mini Trailers) available
for rent for anyone choosing to spend the night.
Rental fee is $15 per Scamp, with a maximum of two
people per trailer. The Scamps are pretty basic so
bring your own sleeping bags and pillows if
you plan on renting one. You can rent a Scamp in
advance by calling the SeaBase dive shop via:

435.884.3874

HOW TO GET THERE:

From Salt Lake City, take I-80 West toward Nevada to
Exit 84. At the stop sign on frontage road, turn left.
Take second left under the freeway on to Highway 138.
Follow highway 138 five miles south (mile marker 5).
Seabase will be on your left (east).

MAP - www.seabase.net/map.htm

THINGS TO BRING:

Warm clothes (Blankets, Cold weather costumes,
hats, hand warmers and whatever else you might
need to be comfortable in near freezing temperatures),
Fire Barrels,
Wood to burn, particularly pallets
Fire Extinguishers
Extra Blankets
Food and drink for the Potluck
Your art or gifts to share with others
And a good attitude.

SOME OTHER INFORMATION:

Weather: IT IS GONNA BE DAMN COLD!! Dress warm..
Dress warm.. Dress Warm.. Most of the Solstice Burn
will be taking place outside at night. There will be
some fire Barrels on the site, but only a couple.
The Winter Burn will be taking place in any type of
weather short of a major snow storm. In the event
of severe weather, keep an eye on the email list and
the Utah Burn website for more info.

The Bonneville SeaBase dive shop will be available as
a heated indoor space during the event. We will be
holding a potluck dinner in the dive shop throughout
the evening. This will be our only indoor heated space
available during the burn.

Car-pooling to the event is encouraged. Everyone at
the event is totally responsible for his or her own
actions, so act accordingly. (Yes, this is a veiled
reference to the use of Alcohol at the event.) If you
plan on drinking please be sure to have a designated
driver. Bring chairs if you would like to sit for any
of the events. Firearms and other weapons are not
welcome, this is a nonviolent event. SeaBase has also
requested that we not bring any pets to the event, you
will be asked to take them home if they have come
along. Children under 18 can only attend the event
with a legal parent or guardian.

There will be Porta Potties on the site specifically
for our use. They will be well lit and easy to find
just like at Element 11.

If you would like to volunteer for the Winter Solstice
Burn (or bring your art or winter compatible theme
camp to share with others) feel free to contact me off

In a moment of clarity, I wrote this regarding a post in the B-man Tribe..... It rings so true...and keeps me reading it over and over again:

"My parents keep asking me if Burning Man is anything like the rainbows. I always tell them that the founding principals are not necissarily so different, the big difference is responsibility. We take responsibility for our actions, we clean up our mess, and we pay the appropriate fees. Of this, I am very proud!"

Got it? Check...we are a proud RESPONSIBLE people! Love you guys!

Trona

P.S. Joe, Josh, don't tell them we haven't cleaned up our burn pyre yet from FJ 2006.....in all reality, we aren't required to do this by FS regulation, but it will be done this spring as will site clean-up and restoration. Oh shit, I just let the secret out of the bag.....LOL!

Healing Rune Build for Utah Solstic Burn

Hey All,

Well, I decided I (possibly we) am tackling the project of building a healing rune for the Utah Solstice burn.

I'll have wood transported to my residence over the weekend and then its time to build.

Anyone want to help with this? I'll be available evenings/weekends (may be visiting SLC the weekend Dec. 2, but unsure yet) up until burn day...so lemme know if we want to put together a build party one of these days.

Utah Solstic Burn Announcements (compiled from Element 11)

Hey All,

Here's what we've got thus far on the Utah Solstice Burn. Is anyone going to be in Salt Lake tomorrow? If you are, let me know and hopefully we can arrange to get cheaper tix.

Hey Peeps,

Our next monthly Utah Burn meeting will be taking
place this Sunday November 19th at 1:00pm. We’ll be
meeting at Brewvies (677 South 200 West) near downtown
Salt Lake City. This time around we’ll be talking
about the upcoming Winter Solstice Burn taking place
next month on December 16th. Anyone out there who would
like to become involved with putting together our annual winter burn
would be welcome to attend. Everyone is also welcome
to bring photos and stories from this past Burning Man
and/or our recent Decompression party.

See ya’ll there...

Dave 23

I neglected to mention in my previous post that tickets to our Winter Solstice Burn will be available for $10 during the Utah Burn meeting taking place this Sunday. This will be the only opportunity to buy tickets to our winter burn at this discount, as there will be no other presales. All other tickets will be sold during the event for $15 at the front gate. Just as a reminder the Winter Solstice Burn will be taking place on Saturday December 16th at Bonneville SeaBase from 3:00pm to midnight. I’ll be posting all of the details on our winter burn sometime after Thanksgiving weekend.

Hey All,

Since it looks like we'll have a small band of us traveling together to BMan 2007, I thought why not start early w/ a mix CD of artists that make us think (or we think of when we see footage) of the playa.

My picks,

Thrillseekers - Night Music Vol. 1
PvD - Politics of Dancing Vol. 2
Autechre
Bjork
Aphex Twin
Scooter (namely Hello, Hello!)
Marusha

Anyone up for starting this comp? My puter is so old and slow, I doubt it would handle it.

Hey All,

Ok, so I'm a bit hammered, but I just dreamed up a great piece for the solstice burn in Utah. A healing rune would be easy to build, easy to burn, and I have some amazing ideas for pyro.... Anyone up for a build on this? I've got a general idea, and it would easily follow the outline of a palllet....I'm already volunteering for cleanup as I have the couple days after off.

Hey All,

Wow, it is already that time. Do we have any thoughts on the E-11 Solstice Burn, Dec. 16? As it stands now, I'm scheduled to work that weekend....so am frantically trying to work something out so that I can be off. We do have the "HMS Dead Tranny, BRC" back and it is running well. It goes in end of this week for an alignment fix.....so we may have that available. I'll let you all know ASAP if I can get my work schedule figured out.

Hey All,

I'm cranky today...so I'll make this short and hopefully not piss you all off.

For the 28th...usual playa rules/etiquette apply! Hopefully you all know what this means, if you don't, get hold of me. In addition, noise levels from amplified sound shouldn't pose an issue, but if we do offend any neighboring camps (I doubt there will be any, but it is public access), we need to turn it down w/o question....

Also make sure you stop by either the Ashley National Forest office in Green River on South WYO 530 (Uinta drive, you'll drive right past it on the south end of town) Ace Hardware, also on Uinta, or Maverick, just off Uinta and get at least a day pass for the Gorge. This is required by law...without one in your vehicle (each vehicle must have one) you can be fined (usually $75), jailed, and/or removed from the rec. area. They are extra sneeky about this, you won't even know you've been nailed until the fine shows up in the registered vehicle owner's mailbox. Not a nice thing to do if you are borrowing someone's vehicle.

We'll be serving beach cakes (pancakes) that morning...about 9-noonish (its playa time, so pretty much whenever the hell we feel like it :P) Bring your own plate and utinsels. Also if you have any extra syrup, butter, jam, etc, bring it along...these things work best when everyone pitches in.

If anyone driving a truck or vehicle w/ room for a piece (or 2 or 3) about 56x80inches will be in town early, please let me know. Details are still sketchy as to getting the burn piece out there. Our van is still at the doctor :( so we're doing what we can w/ cars and a possibly volunteered truck.

Other than that....let's burn this sucker down!

Lotsa Love,

Green River Service Guide

Hey All,

I know how this often gets, so figured I'd throw out my picks for stuff in Green River. There is a lot more, but these are folks that I really like and would like to see this experience help out, unless otherwise noted. Rock Springs is only 11 miles from Green River, so that's an option for you too if you want to jaunt over there. I have no picks there other than food, as I'm not overly familiar w/ most of it. The area code for all is 307.

So first off MOTELS:
I have no experience with any of these, so this is entirely at your own risk.

Litte America (the reincarnation of the original, yes, it all started in Granger!)
20 miles W of Green River on I-80
875-2400

Mustang Motel
550 E Flaming Gorge Way
875-2488

Oak Tree Inn
1170 W Flaming Gorge Way
875-3500

Super 8
280 W Flaming Gorge Way
875-9330

Sweet Dreams Inn
1416 Uinta Drive (next to the bowling alley and Liquid Emotions)
875-7554

Western Inn
890 W Flaming Gorge Way
875-2840

DINING

Breakfast:
Buckaroos Family Restaurant
580 E Flaming Gorge Way
876-2246 (the book lists it as 876, but I'm nearly certain its 875)

Penny's Diner (the breakfast burrito is the BEST) Breakfast is the only worthwhile meal here
I-80 & WYO 530 (just off the interstate)
875-3500

Lunch & Dinner:
Mi Casita (new location, same great food, REAL mexican)
No address given, its on Flaming Gorge Way near the courthouse
875-6425

Bonsai Sushi & Japanese Cuisine
Dewar Drive
Rock Springs
362-1888

Woderful House (chinese)
Sunset Drive
Rock Springs
382-8800

Rock Springs has several good places to eat....I'm just not overly familiar with them. If you know any Rocketeers, they'll know better.

SUPPLIES:

Ace Hardware
400 Uinta Drive
875-1520

Pamida (not the best, but we don't have much else)
1105 Bridger Drive (next to Smith's)
875-5244

Payless Drug, Liquor, & Sporting Goods (I've only used them for a keg, but they are friends of Tux)
Near MiCasita on Flaming Gorge Way
875-2435

Smith's (The only grocery store in town)
905 Bridger Drive
875-6900

GAS

Maverick (they're a few cents cheaper for 87-mid, about the same on everything else) Beer and cigarettes by the carton are cheapest here, but liquor is a bit more.
Just over the bridge on 2nd...
875-2997

Liquor

MansFace Liquors
Mike is a great guy....his wine selection is top-shelf, not as big as the others, but I've never gotten a bad bottle from him. Most of his hard liquor is cheaper than everyone else. Beer is a bit more, but he carries lots of micros, and he does occasionally markdown on large volumes...but no guarantees. The old-timers sitting around having a drink always have interesting coversation, and I always have a wonderful purchasing experience here....Oh and you can sit and have one too if you'd like!
Uinta Drive near the Loaf 'n Jug
875-7695

BARS (close at 2am M-Sat, 10pm on Sun)
I'm not a huge fan of the bar scene here.... Unless you are the gruffest of burner and don't look like a hippy, I'd stear clear of them. There is one I go to on occasion:

Liquid Emotions Lounge
1410 Uinta Drive
875-2695

Other retailers of most of these things are around....but these are the ones I like!

Hope that helps,

Hey All,

Just a quickie...I'm busy being a self-righteous, pretentious, asshole in one of my tribes at the moment (please catch the sarcasm there...I'm ranting like crazy, but have prefaced it...).

Snow today :( and it is sticking just above town elevation. Its supposed to get nicer, but I would still be prepared for colder temps and have good tires that can handle mud and snow on my vehicle.

Hey All,

In the fine tradition of Burning Man, we'll be hosting a Beach Cake (since its not a playa, no playa cakes) breakfast after the build on the 28th. So if you are hungry, come on down....If you can bring syrup, jam, etc that would be most helpful. I'd still recommend a light breakfast before, tho.

Also working on a smallish theme camp, but will have to wait and see if the van is repaired by then.

Hey All,

Well as you can see, we went out for a site visit today. The road is still good, and suprisingly, the recent rainfall has actually smoothed it out a bit. We made it from WYO 530 to the site in about 30 min today. Did some serious MOOP to MIP conversion on the site itself and a quick conversion of the surrounding area. Still lots of work to be done, so please, pick up as you go!

There will be a little bit of pit excavation on the 28th, but everything else is very intact and ready to fire!

YAY! Hope to see lots of you then.

OK, if any of you all are as geeky as I am, here are the GPS coords (approx) for Lost Dog...the views in Google earth aren't so great...I think they are from the late 80s, judging by what I can make out of Green River.

41 17' 43.90" W
109 32' 53.41" N

Enjoy... Oh and if anyone is a bit better at satellite recon than I am, lemme know if you see a good spot for me to scope out :)

Ok all,

We are still go! There have been a few minor changes, but nothing too drastic. I did my final, OK, this is the big person in charge that I need to check with and here's what came of it....

The pyre will have to be enclosed in a rock ring (easy enough) and should only be knee high...OK, I'm taking a gamble and we're going waist high. So sadly, no huge pyre, but I think it will still be impressive.

As for sound...really there are no restrictions in the area, but we are asked to be mindful of neighbors, that if there are issues, we will be asked to turn it off and if we don't comply we can be fined and the system will be permanantly disabled.....

Other than that, I was reminded that this IS hunting season (no, I totally missed all the gory talk at work...), we were wished a happy outing and thanked again for making sure all our ducks were in a row...

Now to find a good site for the next one :)

War Rune Survival Guide

Wyoming War Rune Burn 2006 Survival Guide
October 28, 2006

What is this?

The Wyoming War Rune Burn is an artistic expression promoting community building, artistic awareness, free-expression, and just about any other idea you can think of.

Given the way that this facility works, and its proximity to the beautiful Flaming Gorge…DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

Once you leave the city limits of Green River, Lost Dog (watch for the sign) will be a right hand turn 6 mi.

This link will help you find a pass vendor if you are unable to pick one up in Green River: http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/ashley/passes/pass_vendors.shtml
a.	The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area office is located on Uinta Drive (Wyoming 530) in Green River on the south end of town.

Construction of the rune will begin at about 9:00am on October 28th. If you are able to help with the portage of wood to the site, please e-mail techonm_lover@yahoo.com Also, if you have any wood to bring, please do….the site has two hungry fire rings in addition to the rune pyre. If you have an extra bucket you can bring, this would be most helpful too.
Join us on tribe.net at http://tribes.tribe.net/flamingjoe This project has amazing potential to become something big and grand….all your help, input, and spreading the word is desperately needed during this infancy period.

Hey All,

OK, I'm back from galavanting all over this great and crazy nation and have things in the works.

1) Mother nature has thus far cooperated. Despite a bit of a scare before leaveing for SFO, we have been warm and sunny, so it looks like Lost Dog will work.

2) The date will be Oct. 28...now for the fun stuff...
a) No one is in charge...you are responsible for YOURSELF!
b) You need to have a Flaming Gorge Rec. Area pass from the Ashley National Forest (think of it as buying a ticket if you will). A day pass is about $3 and can be purchased at the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area Information office on Uinta Drive in Green River, WY.

3) The beginning of the construction of the rune to be assembled on the 28th during the day will begin shortly. I should have this pretty well under control...so is all we really need is to see all your shining faces!

Lotsa Love and More to come,

Hey All,

Well, we finally got off our asses and went for a drive tonight.

First, we drove out McKinnon road (Sweetwater County 1) to the Burntfork road to one of the initial places I had found on google earth. It is BLM, but one huge drawback, it would be a walk-in only site. It isn't much of a walk (1000ft at most), but for a burn, it would require folks to only pack what they needed, etc. It is an amazing site, an old mud wash (kinda like the playa, but mud instead of alkali) with basalt, obsidian, and quartz strewn all over it....it is really beautiful.

Next, on a lark, we drove out Lost Dog, on the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. It was raining like crazy, but could still make out all the spires, etc in Scott's Bottom and had some amazing glimpses of the Gorge. 10 Miles later, we were greeted with an amazing semi-developed campground (1 solo permanent porta-john thingy). This site definitely has tons of potential, but requires the last 10 miles be driven on a Forest Service maintained dirt road. As usual, it was washboardy in spots, I think the max speed we hit was 35. This site has great existing infrastructure and the views up and down the gorge are simply breathtaking, even in a downpour.

First, let me know what you all think? Pros, cons, and a vote for which site sounds best to you. This does get tricky, as weather (if we get much snow in Oct.) may prevent one, or both from being accesible, but we'll work on that later.

Secondly....damn this whole experience for giving me wanderlust and making me venture out in my own backyard and see what's out there...;)

Lotsa Love,

Hey Flamers (hee hee, I like that, I'll have to remember that one),

I've got a couple folks on board from Utah looking to Burn sooner than later. My thoughts are a Samhain burn....nothing fancy, nothing too terribly coordinated, but there would be plenty of responsibility involved by all.

So my thoughts:

1) Oct 28, Mud Creek, Flaming Gorge, WY (I'll have to find some good maps or possibly arrange a general meeting place for the treck in). It isn't bad road or anything, just hard as hell to try and explain how to get in there. Although that time of year 4WD might be a good idea.

2) Small effigy and possible ceremony. It will be cold out there, so we may consider an after party somewhere in either Rock Springs or Green River.

3) Leave No Trace!

4) Everyone will have to have a Flaming Gorge use pass. The Gorge is awesome! but does require all users (1 pass per vehicle) to have obtained a pass from the local forest service office. We can work out details on that a bit later.

What are your thoughts? If this goes off, it will be a very small event, but I think a step in the right direction to get us going.

Lotsa Love,

Hello to myself (I'm the only one here so far) and everyone else in the Wyoming Burn Community who stumbles in.

My idea behind this is simple....let's get a way for us all to keep in touch going! I have grander designs of possibly working to get our own regional going here, but all in due time!
