Really, what a stellar idea. I was wondering if anyone involved has any experience with intentional communities or sustainable building/design? While I love the idea, it seems to me there is a fundamental difference between building a permanent community and a TAZ like Burning Man. For instance, it is hard to imagine a zero impact community. I mean, I love pack it in pack it out, but how is this any different than a garbage collection service if you are building a community? Not that I am knocking this project. I would love to get involved in this. I'm just wondering how much of this has been worked out or even thought about.

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 2:37 PMwelcome to the group mitchell !
im fairly sure that NOT everything has been thought out. youve brought up some good thoughts. i can tell you that no, i personally, do not have any experience in the concepts youre asking about. if you do, and would like to contribute - im sure that we would love to hear your thoughts. i actually dont even know what the acronym TAZ is.
just by posting and bringing up subjects for the group to think about - you ARE getting involved. (which is great) if you get really motivated, you can even send in your deposit and get in on the "ground floor" and by being a "founder" your voice will be very clearly heard and ackowledged.
im just your friendly neighborhood "greeter" - i havent even sent in my own deposit - but ive been following this process at is evolving. it is taking time, but all good things do...
do you have any references that we could look at for "intentional communities" or "sustainable building/design" that you think we might benefit from looking thru? theres also a wiki - that you could contribute some thoughts to as well...
have fun and nice to meetcha, h. -

Just for you FYI. The very first Burningman in the desert was actually put on by the Cacophony society and was advertised as a TAZ - Zone trip #4.

Here's Hakim Bey's original writing on the concept of a TAZ.

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 3:10 PMooh boy, that TAZ link is a bit frightening. the jpeg was cute tho - i should prolly download it and zoom in cuz i couldnt read all the text...
if i ever get back to this - ill try to learn the "lingo". and the anti-copyright notice strikes me as what would now be called a creative-commons license (or somesuch)...
thanx adam, for pointing out these links - uh, maybe i should go add them to the wiki somewhere? or have you already done that?

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 2:54 PMWelome to the tribe!
I'm sure that we're missing things. And if you see any problems, feel free to try to poke holes in our project. But we have actually put a pretty good amount on thought into things.
I don't know if you know this, but Hakim Bey who created the idea of a Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ), also gave thoughts to the idea of a Permanent Autonomous Zone (PAZ).
Here's a link to his essay on that:

As for discussions of "leave no trace", we've realized that if we're going to keep the values of Burningman, that one value will have to take on a new meaning. Some thoughts on that are on our website:

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 3:04 PMwow - that paz link is a tough read. it uses "new" words and lots of imagery. thanx for the link - im not sure i understood it all, but it is a very useful reference for some of the language that might be useful to use when talking about fm.

Re: This is great
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 5:33 PMthats one of the big ways we are gonna have to adapt the ten principles. i do think it is still important to LNT... we should all look at ways we can have less of a negative impact on the world around us, in all parts of our lives. so, our adaption is 'LNT, but make your mark'. dont throw your trash around, dont dump your crap on the ground or in the lake, recycle what you can (i dont know what the recycling situation is down there, that might be something we should look into)... but build large-scale, long-term art. if the trace you leave is positive, if it leaves the environment better or more beautiful, then i think thats a trace i am comfortable leaving.
not sure if you really were seeing a garbage collection service, so i just wanted to mention this to keep things clear: our version of LNT still relies on the individual. there will not be a org. run garbage collection service, people will be expected to clean up after themselves.
several people that have been involved at one point or another have expereince with intentional communities... but i dont. i dont think anyone currently involved (majorly anyways) has any direct experience there either.
and please do 'knock' the project; poke holes in it, point out the flaws and unrealistic expectations, call people on being boneheaded :) its all constructive. if you find a problem now, before we all sink our money into it and fly halfway across the world, we can fix it now, before it really is a problem :)
question: can you see a year long burningman? how would it work? what parts of the event could not be continued all year, and would it still be BM without those parts?
