I was hoping to get this New Year off to a bang, and really get the momentum rolling. Instead the opposite seems to be happening.
One of Tia's big complaints was that our meetings are announced at the last minute. This last meeting, and the one before it, didn't happen at all. In my mind, this is unacceptable. We need to fix this.
What does everyone think about having the meetings on the First Saturday of every month at Noon PST? Can we agree to this schedule and stick to it?
If so, I'll publish a calendar of meetings on the website.
The meeting this past Saturday did not happen. So, for this month, can we have one next Saturday. Kay O, Tia, Trae, others, can you make this meeting? I'll also mail the rest of the 'official people' and invite them to the meeting.
What else can we do to get this project moving faster?
My guess for that seems to be advertising, advertising, advertising. It's possible that we'll get help from the BMORG with that after I get back in the country and talk with Steve Raspa. But that won't be until mid-February. I'll also put up some fliers here in Granada, Nicaragua. People who are in Nicaragua already might have interest. Other ideas for advertising?
Any other ideas for getting things moving?
P.S. I spoke to people today who talked about some NGOs (non-governmental organizations), which took 5 years from the initial idea to realization, so we're not moving all that slowly.

Re: It's a New Year!
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 8:23 PMa couple months ago, just after most people missed a meeting that happened in the middle of the week, i posted about the meeting for the next month. true, i was asking when would work best, rather then just saying a time (which might work better), but it was posted with 30 days notice. we have been pretty bad about actually posting something witha date and time till late, but its been pretty well known, i think, that we have one at the beginning of every month. and posting about them earlier hasnt helped much, previously.
im not sure what can help this. one thought howeve is to post the agenda on here, when we mention the meeting. i know adam has generally had at least the outline of an agenda for each meeting, and most of us that attend have something we want to mention. posting it here would also give people that cant attend a chance to throw in their points.
saturday i might be able to make it (wasnt it sundays previously? sunday wouldnt work for me now, just curious though). i cant say for sure, i havent been able to get a reliable internet connection in months.
honestly, i think the naysayers are winning at the moment. enough bad vibes are going around tribe that it is rather unproductive as our central communications. the only forward movement we have made is in pointless battles with people whose only intention was to lash out at this project for unrelated reasons.
i suppose i was being rather optimistic thinking that we could simply pull off this project with no fuss. it seems like it should be straightforward, but of course nothing ever is. with that in mind i think the best thing we can do right now is make -something- happen. some event, some expedition, some adventure, whatever it is. the two really have nothing to do with each other, but if we cant pull off -something- we will never have the credibility needed to make the island happen. -

Saturday at noon it is then. Do your best to make it.
I'll mail others.

Ah.... don't let them get to you. And let's remember that not everyone who posts criticism is out to destroy us. Some of them, like my "attacks" on burningman are just trying to make things better.
> with that in mind i think the best thing we can do right now is make -something- happen. some event, some expedition, some adventure, whatever it is.
Okay. But at bare _minimum_, we need to have the meetings. That's better than nothing at all.
I'm just one person, but I'm down in Nicaragua now, and I'm getting stuff done. Did you look at the info on the updated TODO list?
floatingman.wetpaint.com/page/...aragua
And I'll be posting fliers today.
Let's see what we can do to get the momentum running again, and then the best thing I guess would be to try for a Nicaraguan burn. Unless you can think of any other interim project for us. -

Re: It's a New Year!
Tue, January 8, 2008 - 8:54 PMCan't make it. I'll read whatever minutes happen. Publishing a schedule and sticking to it are soooo basic. Must be a goal that is easily reachable regardless of attendance. -

Re: It's a New Year!
Wed, January 9, 2008 - 12:20 PMim somewhat frustrated with the meetings. we started them almost a year ago. they were pretty much consistantly the first weekend of every month. we accomplished a good bit at them too. but they never seemed to catch on. there was never any more then 4 people at any one. adam and myself were the only solid fixtures (half of them it was just us two in total). if its just gonna be two people, that can happen whenever it doesnt matter when. i agree not having them at all would be a bad thing, but if no one is gonna show anyways...
i wonder if we could do them by request? someone decides they want to go to meetings, so they ask if we can have one on day X, and we see who can be available that day? wouldnt be much different then what we are doing now, except instead of coming from the regular attendants it would be coming from new blood. -

The meetings were intended as a Leadership Committee meeting. At minimum, the leaders need to be there. As I see it, anyone else is just a bonus.
Honestly, I'm fine with a meeting with only 4 people in it, so long as we are getting stuff done. Let's get back to that point. Getting stuff done is one hell of a lot better than not getting stuff done.
So, I really hope to see you there on Saturday. Two people would be a start. Tia and Misha have both said that they cannot make it. But we will at least send them the minutes.
> someone decides they want to go to meetings, so they ask if we can have one on day X
I think the best way is to set the date and time of the next meeting at the end of each meeting. Then if someone has a preference for a date change, it might happen for the following meeting.
Tia says that publishing a schedule and sticking to it is "sooo basic". I pretty much have to agree with her.
