Greeters

Do any of you long-timer lurkers or occasional posters want to help out by serving as a greeter, welcoming people to this tribe, and answering any questions they have?

i think id be happy to be a greeter - typically theres a "hello" or "introduce yourself" thread that allows newbies to announce their presence. usu it is serviced by the moderator, but id be happy to welcome folks in...

as far as answering questions - i think thats a slightly different issue - and will depend upon the question... seems to me that is more along the lines of an faq-thread. i guess i could organize a little of that too. the obvious answer to any question should be to go to the main website, isnt it? honestly, ive never actually clicked on it - so id need to do a bit more research to be able to answer anything - including looking at the website - duh...

i honestly am not sure if im really the best person to do these things. for the past month or two, ive been a fairly steady reader/lurker/poster to tribe (and here) - but i can "disappear" for months at a time also... i wasnt online at all from like june thru dec of 07 for instance.

however, i guess for the moment ill go ahead and volunteer. i have not particularly looked at the number of tribe members, but has there been a steady-increase that youve noticed (or are expecting) that seems to require a greeter? just curious... also, does it matter that im actually not a "true" member of fm? im really part of the peanut gallery, afaict...

while it would be semi-trivial to start an "introduce yourself" thread 30 seconds after ive posted this response, i think i will wait a bit and see what the results of this thread propose - ok?

with future-salutations to all? hugs, harold...

So long as you remain available, you seem like a fine candidate to me.

The size of the tribe has been growing slowly. Sometimes people drop out. And we seem to get an average of a couple of new people a week.

Trae and I have recently started alternating in greeting people. I'll add you into that rotation.

Being a greeter is easy. On the wiki, is a standard greeting message you should send out.

      floatingman.wetpaint.com/

That message contains a link to an introduce yourself thread, but as of yet, no one has used it. Any ideas on how to do better with that?

Updating the FAQ is an excellent suggestion. Thanks for volunteering to help on that. Our FAQ has also been moved to the wiki.

      floatingman.wetpaint.com/page/FAQ

Just send me your email address so that I can start forwarding the messages to you when someone joins the tribe.

      Cheers!

i havent clicked on the links (wetpaint? interesting...) but will try to get to them in the next couple of days. im still a bit confused about what goes where - since my only real experience with fm is this single tribe on tribe.net. maybe itll make more sense when i go over to the website. (yes, im being lazy - i really will click over there soon - but i have a party to go to tonite and want to head out soon.) have fun, h.

i dont know if you (adam) put that up there as a test - or whether it was just weird coinky-dinky (or maybe brook actually read this thread - duh), but i was happily here and able to welcome brook. this is fun - i still havent clicked on the link to the website - i guess i shouldve prolly added that to my greeting, huh? isnt it in the main description for this tribe tho? anyways - im happily surfing around this morning. i promise - someday - ill actually go click on the website...

anyways - her title seems like one of the many useful titles for an introductory-thread - so if newbies happen to trail along on her thread - thatd be awesome, i think... tribe doesnt have anything like a sticky-link do they? ie - maybe itd be possible to keep that one up near the top of the llist of topics? whatever - im just in a babbly mood. have a happy stupor-bowl-sunday yall... h.

            heres something interesting - laburners.tribe.net/thread/8...0227ba92a

now, i know nym (and even his real name, birthday and all kinds of stuff - he was here at my house yesterday in fact) - and he created that thread "introduce yourself". theres much to be admired about bm - and in the values-discussion i mentioned the radical-inclusion being a #1 value might be worthwhile.

now, technically - i just clicked on the link but didnt read ANY of the posts. (so, technically - i shouldnt even tove claimed tove clicked on the link, huh?) anyways - my "understanding" of what that thread probably meant to nym (since he also started the la-burners tribe) is that he was putting out a welcome-mat/soapbox of himself, and then inviting everyone to come step up and have a shout from the soapbox...

this is a subtle, but to my mind an important distinction... it is an active pursuing/sharing rather than a passive sitting/greeting. the values-thread is probably where this topic probably belongs, but keeping it relevant to here... im perfectly happy to be a passive sitting/greeting-type of guy. thats just sorta who i am (unless ive been drinking - which causes me to become much more extroverted).

ok - never mind - i just realized that this long babble is about my thoughts on introversion and extroversion... there really are two types of people out there (and of course the shades of grey in between)... this thread (and greetings in general) fall into a category which some people find uncomfortable, but i do not... (at least from the passive-perspective that tribes generally create anyways)

you (adam) asked for help in greetings - and that is prolly a good thing. from what i understand (and i havent clicked over there [whatever bm-tribes you frequent] either, so i dont know - other than the venom that ends up in here), you dont seem to make a great first impression (or should i say a "welcoming" first impression) thru your writings/posts. im happy to try and share/help here - altho to be fair, there are folks that dont like ME either. i encounter it in EH all the time...

anyways - in the interests of us all sharing and helping each other - if you see a newbie that i havent greeted (or that ive somehow pissed off during my hello), then please feel free to help me out - itll be much appreciated. :-)

what we mean by greetings is sending personal messages :) so we are tying to be a bit more outreaching then has been the case until recently. adam, as the tribe moderator, gets a message whenever a anyone joins, which he then sends along to one of us. theres a standard intro letter on the wiki (dont have the link at hand, but i think adam posted it above) with a bunch of useful links to get involved/learn more about the project, which should be sent to the new members mailbox, so they have it all at hand. if you think anything should be added to the standard intro letter let us know :)

the idea with personal greeters is basically give anyone joining personal guide tothe project, so if they have any questions or trouble getting caught up they have an automatic person to ask. this really is about community, we arent just a couple people making this project happen for everyone else, so we want people getting themselves involved as easily and quickly as possible. so if a question comes up that you, as a newcomer to the project yourself, dont know just send it over to adam or myself (or whoever else seems the logical choice).

theres already a couple 'introduce yourself' threads, so id rather reuse ones that are already in existance (trying to keep the threads manageable so we can find stuff, until it all gets organized and indexed to the wiki). but its not really a big deal, the important thing is people feeling welcome, excited, and getting involved.

                Harold,

Please start by reading the links that I shared with you.

But on the whole, we're trying to move away from the tribe as a source of information. It's a could record of what has happened, but it 's a lousy place to find the info that you need.

The website has much of the information, but the wiki is a very valuable tool because everyone can contribute to it.

                Cheers!

                  >>>trying to move away from the tribe as a source of information.

                  ah, ok. got it.

and i had no idea about the personal-email-stuff. i dont moderate any tribes, sove never encountered it.

thanx, harold. (who still hasnt clicked over to the links - but really will, i promise - and might even start a topic here - or on the wiki over there? when i get a chance to look thru it...)

ok - i clicked over there and even went thru every little phase (silly flash demos, but useful) to make my profile 100% complete... in particular, if someone is reading this thread - then the appropriate place to "jump" to would be the Greeters-link on the wiki/website which is: floatingman.wetpaint.com/page/Greeters

i can tell that the wiki is still a work in progress - and it is tempting to go in and make all kinds of adjustments that would make it look more to my liking (in particular, the owner and llc pages start with the same info - so it is confusing to realize that they contain different info). i can be a little neurotic about micro details sometimes... :-)

im still confused by the multiple-entry points - ill try to sort it out (and make the appropriate connections if/when they are appropriate). in particular, theres an oct-07 thread for intro here in fm-tribe, but i think you said there was an intro-thread on the wiki (which i havent seen but havent looked for).

i dont exactly understand the reason for moving away from this fm-tribe for info. it should be fairly easy to link to the wiki for any questions/future-threads - should they become too "important/involved" to be satisfactorily discussed here... or quoting "It's a could record..." what did that mean?

ok, anyways - i hope ive helped. if ive caused harm - please let me know and ill try to learn... have fun, h.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

in the interest of making the web a little more weblike - i think that each of these entry points should point to the others fairly easily upfront:
                    www.floatingman.org/index.php
                    floatingman.wetpaint.com/

never mind - the fm-website-faq points directly to the wiki - which is appropriate. cool.

i was futzing around over in the wiki and discovered that you cant create outside links inside a thread - to prevent spamming. as part of this discovery process, i joined ( www.wetpaintcentral.com/thread...ads+FAQ ) the wetpaint-central wiki. there was an automated message that popped into my account which pointed out the faq and how to get further answers...

it seems to me, that a quick/easy way to help in the greeting process is to create this welcome-message at the wiki for fm also...

ok, enough babbling - just my thoughts for the day...
