Samadhi performs a unique style of dance based on American Tribal Style Belly Dance. American Tribal Style was originated on the West coast by Carolena Nericcio, of Fat Chance Belly Dance. In the Fat Chance style of group improvisational choreography one dancer leads a series of dance movements while her fellow dancers follow. The lead dancer changes throughout the performance. Our style of ATS incorporates traditional Middle Eastern dance with dance from other cultures including Spanish, American Indian, Polynesian, African, Asian, Indian, and gypsies form around the world while utilizing the idea of group improvisational choreography. This fusion of dance is displayed by the diverse and colorful costuming we wear. This creates an incredibly dynamic performance that can never be duplicated. Samadhi believes inherintely in the tribal philosophy which is founded on the strength of women and that dance is community based and interpretive within a set series of movements.
Samadhi is a Sanskrit word that means a state of bliss reached through intense meditation. We adopted it as our troupe name to symbolize the bliss we feel when we become one with each other, the rhythms of the music, and of course, with the dance.
