BIOGRAPHY
For almost a decade, the insightful lens of Pixie has captured the essence of the performer and created some of the defining images of the lucid dreamer in the modern world.

She has toured with numerous bands documenting life on stage and off, but it is in the studio where the veil between model and photographer dissipates. Her inner dialogue as a photographer is a dance between the character of her subject and her perception of their desire.

Pixie holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and her work has been featured worldwide in publications including Variety, Pulp Magazine, Playgirl, Metal Edge, Complete Woman, Skin & Ink, Modern Drummer, Revolver and Rolling Stone.

Martin County and West Palm Beach area

Could any one let me kow if there are any teachers in the West Palm Beach or area of Martin County near West Palm Beach? Also for the Juno area. I may be moving to that area in a couple of months and would like to continue taking lessons. Right now I am taking lessons in the Caberet style. I'm not sure what Caberet style as I've never asked. I take lessons at the Habeeba's School of Dance in Columbus, OH. So if you're familiar with her style, any teachers who teach that style would be great.

All recommnedations are greatly appreciated.

Yes, that's right! Amy Sigil will be in the west coast of Fl Oct. 10th to do a workshop. Proceeds will go towards Johanna's Breast Cancer fight. Come on out for an awesome workshop and show Oct. 10th and 11th.

Remember, the winning entry receives $150 buckaroos (U.S. dollars).

I'm off to meet w/ a contractor to get a quote for installing the sprung floors in the dance area, as well as one or two other things I'd like done in the space. And then trying to hook up w/ Shannon who leads several drumming events in the area about teaching a weekly percussion for M.E. rythms at my studio.

Whats in a name?

Alrighty, everyone whose met me or checked out either of my pages (here on Tribes and on MySpace) knows how addicted to belly dance I've become. And also, it's no secret that (like many other dancers) I've considered opening my own studio - eventually.

Well, eventually is turning out to be NOW!
I've been crazy mad trying to get all the details and loose ends taken care of. Have gotten quite a lot done preparing to open (two inter-related) businesses. The first is the boutique side of things - and Funky Temple will be open for biz (prob) by end of July.
The studio side of the biz is where things are going ever sooo s l o w.

Fire Belly Dance 101

Fire Safety

are two topics often brought up on many different forums on Tribe.net

Does anyone feel like $200 is to low for a standard cost - or to high??
My personal opinion is that if you are willing to work for less, then it DEFINATLY hurts the industry as a whole - because sometimes it is about price... and if a qualifed/professional dancer has to lower rates just to get work, then new & less experienced dancers take even still less - then eventually nobody can afford to work at their art.

Dear Dance Sisters and Brothers:

We would like to remind you of our Easter/MECDA BELLYpalooza (combination family oriented party) celebration on Sunday, April 8th from 2:00PM on, of our usual Easter Day party and the one year anniversary of MECDA in South Florida.

We are going to have for the children a Bounce House, Easter Egg Hunt (please bring at least 6 candy fill plastic eggs per child), an Easter Piñata and other games.

For the adults there will be a beautiful show, put on by some of the best in South Florida, all styles, Cabaret and Tribal!

The Family BBQ style dinner will also be included, and all of this for $10.00 per adult and $8.00 per child.

For this price you will not have to cook on Easter Day, (you will be fed by one of the best chefs in town, Chef Brian and his succulent cooking), the kids will have a ton of fun like last year, and you will enjoy a wonderful show by some of the best Belly Dancers in the area. From 3:00PM, kids activities will be ongoing, dinner will be around 5:00PM and the show at sundown.

After a great Kick-Off Party last year Florida, M.E.C.D.A. went to sleep!

Well no, we didn't. We continued to focus on our main goal, which is to bring you Cairo Carnivale East. We are happy to announce that we can foresee the first Cairo Carnivale East in early 2009. Cairo Carnivale East promises to be a great festival of all dance styles. Additionally, we are planning several MECDAPaloozas for this summer.

It's our Anniversary Party!
MECDA is one year old in Florida. This Easter Sunday, April 8th at 2:00pm we are celebrating our anniversary and the appointments of the newest positions at our First MECDApalooza.

It's Easter!
Well, we are celebrating Easter with Easter Egghunts, Games and Bounce House for the kids.

It's two great reasons to get together and blast the neighbors with music, dance and fire!!!!

Most of you have tasted Chef Brian's flavorfull cooking and he will again be our Master Chef with some of the best Home BBQ'ing in Florida!!!!

Festivities start at 2:00pm, full dinner approximately 5:00pm, and show at Sundown!

Mondays:
5:30-6:30 American Tribal Style Bellydance- Focusing on the improvisational qualities of tribal bellydance and dancing within a group. We will explore Fat Chance Bellydance and Gypsy Caravan styles of technique.

7-8pm Tribal Fusion Level 1- This class will lay down the fundamental techniques for this amazingly artistic and diverse dance. We will begin by focusing on the basics of tribal technique and then begin to layer that with the stylistic influences of modern day dance styles.

9:15- 10:15 Tribal Fusion Level 2- This class stretches the boundries of traditional tribal dance by mixing Tribal technique with stylistic dance influences of Hip Hop, Spanish Flamenco, trance and underground club dancing, and many more.

The lineup was called “The Bellydreams Team”, because only in our dreams did we think the dancers we wanted would agree to dance all in one show. However, they did in knowing the value of such an organization taking roots here. Florida puts out some of the best dancers, clearly visible in the Bellydance Superstar Lineup, now visible for all to know the rest of our talents.

This lineup was two years in the making and in the mind of Vice President’s Alina Yllanes (yours truly) since 2004, since my visit to my home town of Glendale again and attending Cairo Carnivale after so many years. After numerous tries to get it off the ground the day was finally here. The vision was simple, to kick off a grand event, with a grand line up.

Numerous meetings and a lot of hard work went into the night. From countless hours creating the flyer, the program, advertising on myspace.com, local meetup groups, craig’s list, the tribe.net and other venues, to selecting the volunteers and creating gifts for the dancers as a token of our appreciation for their invaluable participation in this historic event.

Uva Restaurant, a Miami Hot Spot, set the stage for a show that blew the socks off everyone. The $30.00 plate included a wide variety of entrees, appetizer, salad, drink and dessert all set in a Mediterranean Style bistro with a spacious dance floor and beautiful decorative art. A full DJ Booth was a bonus for our President, Michelle Stolzenberg, (also known as DJ Micsto) and the restaurant’s side room served as a holding area for our dancers who comfortably waited with appetizers and beverages for their turn.

Act I

Elviza, who better than the House Dancer for Uva to open the show. Elviza blessed the night with her Isis Wings, turning and shimming around the decorative restaurant column and ending with an energetic drum solo that left everyone uplifted and ready for more.

ZiZi, our Flamenco Goddess, went all out with her “Zapateo and Castanuelas”. Her exquisite performance gave the night a memorable Spanish Flavor.

Jeri a powerhouse of rhythm, stage presence and energy, let loose her Samba zest, with shimmies that rivaled the best of Rio’s Carnivals. Not one person could sit still with her infectious shimmies, there was clapping and stomping; what a performance!

Roshana Nofret, a member of Bozenka’s troupe at South Beach’s Mid East Dance Exchange and one of the four BDSS audition finalists danced as if Shakespeare himself had inspired her with poetry and passion. If this is Roshana at sixteen, what are we in for when she’s in her 30’s? What talent!

Nathalie, our second BDSS Audition finalist, followed with her exquisite grace and her signature shimmies that vibrate like no other. Nathalie ended the first half of the show with an intense Classic Egyptian Piece that showed all the love and passion she has for this art. She danced as if on air and her performance delighted us all and reminded us why we love this art so much. It’s the passion in Nathalie that leaves us utterly breathless when she performs.

During our Intermission, we raffled off hip-scarves and jewelry, courtesy of Secretary Sandy Reyes McCormack, EarthNoize Groove Collective and Shri Shambhala Tribe. Our vendor, Babloo, of “Studio Bazaar” mybazaar@bellsouth.net was busy with a multitude of customers unable to make a decision on the great merchandise and amazing prices on everything from Cabaret, Indian and Tribal Style goodies that you couldn’t keep your hands off.

Act II

Rimarah, a Bellydancer of the Universe Runner Up started the second half of the show with a double sword piece that was as intense as it was beautiful. She was liquid and sultry with perfect command of the swords and powerful presence.

Francesca, one of the most charismatic dancers in Florida, her Farie like stage presence and playful charm captivates her audience and makes new Cane fans whenever she performs. Tamalyn’s Mid East Dance Exchange is really lucky to have her teaching there!

Portia, one of the hardest working dancers in South Florida, another BDSS audition finalists and the director of her own studio in Miami, Belly Motions, Portia took the stage with an Egyptian Pop piece and continued the energy that Francesca had started without missing a beat. With her sharp contrasting moves she’s truly destined for Superstardom in our ever-growing Belly Dance World!

BellyCraft, is an Urban Style Tribal Fusion Troupe led by Director Alicia, another instructor at the Mid East Dance Exchange and a BDSS Audition finalist. BellyCraft is opening doors and raising the bar for alternative dance styles in Florida, a state just beginning to wet their appetite for Tribal. BellyCraft’s Summer, Heather, Thea and Alicia, performed with intricacy and precision showing off their troupe energy with playful, funky moves that hip to hip were well rehearsed yet still looked very spontaneous.

Ansuya, was a symphony of movement. She entered the stage with her standard Classic American Cabaret style, reminiscent of the popular seventies style dancing and then mixed it all up with beautiful Tribal style moves that complimented her dance and made it sharp and very playful. Her fluidity and great command of the Zills continue to captivate us. How lucky we are to have Ansuya as one of Florida’s local talents. She was truly at her best and completely in her element, utterly divine.

We were very honored and lucky to have Jenaeni, Ansuya’s mother in the audience. Jenaeni was one of the original founding members of MECDA and had considered forming this chapter when she first moved here with Ansuya several years ago. However, the now retired dancer and still Ansuya’s mentor is very supportive of our Chapter and both Ansuya and Jenaeni have obtained dual memberships, keeping their California chapter intact and also the additional Florida membership for support. Thank so much for your lovely presence there.

At the end of the show we had more raffles and a very Zaar-Taztic Challenge by Portia. We ended the night with open floor dancing where some of the dancers came to let off some steam with the audience grooving to the funky sounds of DJ. Micsto.

We closed everything with presents for the dancers, some of whom worked very hard selling tickets for the event, like Portia, ZiZi and Alicia. We also recognized the efforts of our volunteers, Kamileh, Yedidah, Stacy (LOTS) of Shri Shambhala, Babloo of the Bazaar who spread the word for the event like wildfire and had numerous guests in attendance and Leticia of the Goddess Tribune who also assisted us with the dancers, sending the event information to her email list and placing it on her newsletter.
