Poi in the Park Returns and its my 43rd Birthday Celebration!!

We will be at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor Sunday, Sept 27th about
Noon and staying til about 4 or so. The link with a map is
http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/11_Philippe.htm. Safety Harbor is
just north of Clearwater. The closest major intersection is McMullen-
Booth and Enterprise Rd. We will be near the end of the parking lot
for shelter #6 or you can go past shelter 6 and park on the road on the right.
If you need my contact info, message me or email me at
tampamayhem@yahoo.com. Call me if you need directions or need to
find us at the park. Bring snacks, drinks, water, maybe
potato salad or fresh fruit. We will try to bring some chicken from
Publix or something like that, ice and a cooler.
In case of RAIN, we will be holding the celebration at our house,
which is not too far from the park. I will send out our address later,
if necessary. And we can play with fire at night if we want to! YAY!

interested people, we may be able to have a trainer come out and hold
an official session to prepare current and future Rangers for the playa.

Training neither obligates you to becoming a Ranger nor guarantees
that you will pass the rigorous mentoring process. It is simply a
first step toward an awesome volunteering opportunity.

We are going to be spinning fire on Clearwater Beach, next to Pier 60

Burnt Oranges intends to produce at least one fundraising event, such as PreHeat, each calendar year which will have attendance caps due to site logistics and insurance coverage. When it becomes apparent that these events will begin to sell out, the following policy regarding distribution of the event Invitations will go into effect. Until the policy goes into effect, Burnt Oranges will consider community commentary regarding modifications to the policy. Any modifications to this policy will be decided by the Board members of Burnt Oranges and their decision will be final.

Burnt Oranges Inc. Event Invitation Policy

Invitation Allocation
Invitations will be allocated as follows:
50% of Invites will be reserved for members of Registered Theme Camps and Artists with Registered Art Installations
20% of Invites will be reserved for Volunteers (Greeters, Rangers, PiMPPS, etc.) that are not part of a Registered Theme Camp or Registered Art Installation
10% of Invites will be reserved for Virgins
20% of Invites will be available to returning Participants on a First-come-first-serve basis

Registered Theme Camps and Registered Art Invitation Distribution
Theme Camps and Art will go through an application and approval process. Criteria to be considered will include, but is not limited to, the level to which the TC/Art has become a staple of the event, the number of people required to properly staff the TC/Art, the degree of interactivity with the community, whether the TC/Art will have a positive impact on the event, the level of creativity, and whether the TC/Art will be bringing any Virgins to the event. The application process will begin seven (7) months prior to the event date. Participants will have thirty (30) days to submit their applications to The Creative Direction Committee (CDC). The CDC will have sixty (60) days review the applications. Should the number of applications require the same or fewer invites than the number reserved for TC/Art, all applications will be approved so long as the TC/Art is not deemed to be a detriment to the event. Furthermore, if the number of applications require fewer invites than the number reserved for TC/Art, the application deadline will be extended until the number of invites requested meets the number reserved for TC/Art. However, should the number of applications require more than the reserved number of invites for TC/Art, the CDC will use the above stated criteria to select which TC/Art will be registered. In addition, at least two (2) new TC/Art will be approved for each event.

Burnt Oranges will notify TC/Art of the status of their applications within two (2) weeks of the CDC’s final review. TC/Art will be granted the number of invitations requested on their application. Approved TC/Art will have up until thirty-one (31) days prior to the event date to purchase their Invites. The cost of the Invites will increase the closer to the event date they are purchased. Thirty (30) days prior to the event, any TC/Art Invites not purchased will become available to all other Participant on a First-come-first-serve basis.

Invitation Distribution Schedule for Volunteers, Virgins, and general Participants
Beginning approximately sixty (60) days prior to the event date, Volunteers, Virgins, and general Participants will be allowed to register for Invites. These invites will be distributed on a First-come-first-serve basis for each group. The cost of the Invites will increase the closer to the event date they are purchased. Thirty (30) days prior to the event, any Invites not purchased will become available to all other Participant on a First-come-first-serve basis.

Creative Direction Committee
A committee will be created comprised of Burnt Oranges Board Members plus two (2) members to be selected by the Board who have been nominated by the community and have previously attended an event produced by Burnt Oranges. The Community Members shall serve on the Committee for a period of two (2) years.

They were wearing candy and he has a glowing plush monkey. She has blonde hair and gave me a candy bracelet that says remember.
You found something I had lost and I gave you some horns.

Decomp in Land O Lakes

The OBE camp is throwing a decomp at Randy's house ( the guy with the bed). there will be room for camping so bring a tent!! This is a 3 day event. Fire fun and what ever else you got!! Its Memorial weekend starting on sat till mon. message me if interested.

PreHeat 2008 - Final Budget

As the inaugural event and fundraiser for Burnt Oranges Inc., PreHeat was an overwhelming success. Not only were we able to give out $1,200 in art grants to participants at PreHeat, we also gave $522 in charitable donations, gave $3,116.73 to Maddox Ranch to help them start up Saddleback Trails (a riding program for the disabled), have money to set aside for an art grant fund, and seed money to conduct additional fundraisers. Fundraisers for what you may ask. Well, to support art and community. Burnt Oranges Inc. is a charitable organization whose mission is to fund large scale public interactive art as well as assist people with artistic talents by providing funding, administrative support, and forums for them to engage in and share their chosen craft. We are applying for 501(c)3 status, so in the future your donations will be tax deductable. In the meantime, here’s more detail on where all the money raised at PreHeat went.

PreHeat 2008: The Other Side of Orange...the peel...

From long before anyone ever stepped foot on Maddox Ranch, PreHeat 2008, the inaugural official Florida Regional Burn, was infused with community support and enthusiasm. This positive energy, coming from seasoned Burner and Virgin alike, created a soul and a heartbeat for PreHeat that filled the entire weekend. The PreHeat community created an environment that fostered art, poetry, personal responsibility, healing, and most importantly, fun.

As Participants made their way down the dirt road to the greeter station they were urged to remove their peel by wonderful inspirational quotes gifted by Charis. And once at the Greeter Station they were not only welcomed with open arms and stiff paddles, they were asked to sign a most unusual document, the “Porta Potty Pledge”. In an effort to maintain the pleasantest potties for our participants the pledge was used to educate participants on proper potty use. In addition to listing do’s and don’ts the Pledge threatened time in the Porta Potty Stockades (Leanna & Rob’s art project) for any violators. Between the Pledge, the Stockades, and wall papering the potties with signed pledges (Peter’s wonderful art project), Participants took to heart this new education and the potties were kept nearly MOOP-free! Over the entire weekend, with around 250 participants and nine potties there were only a handful of violations and most of those consisted of MOOP left on the potty floor rather than dumped into the potty. Equally impressive were Participants’ dedication to keeping the overall site MOOP to a minimum and volunteering - about 1 out of every 5 Participants volunteered to help with greeters, Rangers, PiMPPs (PreHeat Medical & Pyro Posse), and the effigy builds.

So with their potty oath on their mind, Participants happily turned down Yellow Brick Road and entered the world of PreHeat. Fifteen theme camps created a sprawling esplanade along Drunken Drive and the Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Bubble Camp, Conscious Sound, Old Skool Rave, and OBE filled the air with tunes and beats suitable to every frame of mind and time of day while the Blazing Coffee Bean kept everyone perky and the Pallet Bar kept everyone in good spirits. Mandela Camp encouraged Participants to look deeper and Naked City encouraged them to dress less.

Spin Camp provided lessons in poi, staff, and hoop and the Huka Louge provided the most fabulous dinner for volunteers. Wine, cheese, and poetry were enjoyed at East of Scrap Eden while plushy body parts were mingled at Franken Babies. And the Purple Passion Palace hosted the Wango Video Lounge and served a yummy Sunday Brunch.

Many Participants lounged at the pool, took turns grassboarding, and volunteered as a canvas for Raoul’s tireless brush. Others exchanged gifts with the Gifting Tree, took a ride on the Bed, and tasted the edible art freshly cooked in an extraordinary show on a Teppanyaki grill.

Participants enjoyed the view from atop The Oven as it preheated to 420 on Friday. And the Firey Bitches of Bitch Nation and Riz of the Fire Keepers used their extraordinarily large fire canons to help the Shim get its burn on Saturday night. The Paper Tree lit the early morning hours on Sunday in an impromptu burn thanks to the help of a lone fire canon.

Throughout the weekend drama was nearly nonexistent, MOOP was barely visible, and the potties were kept in tip top shape, while the art, creativity, and positive energy reached one peak after another thanks to the Participants and my crew: Fjord - the infamous Ranger Wrangler, Tama - the Ultimate Bitch’s Bitch, and the volunteers. And yes, I did take time to have fun myself, the truth is that every moment was a blast from the time I stepped foot on Maddox.

MOOP Report: 1 beer bottle had to be fished out of a potty, several empty fuel cans were left behind by fire performers, 1 large black bag full of garbage was left behind in the area where Conscious Sound was camped.

There is so much to say about this past weekend, so look for a much longer post after the dust settles, but I didn't want to wait another moment to thank EVERYONE for participating and making the inaugural PreHeat the most magnificent weekend! Yes, I spent a lot of time on the planning and organzing and my weekend revolved around making sure everything executed smoothly, but NONE of it was WORK!!! It was all a complete pleasure to do because I knew I was creating magic for so many people. So I thank you for helping breath life into our little city.

i live in st petersburg. anyone passing through that way? i know a lot of new college kids are coming. maybe they could take 275 instead of staying on 75 the whole way, not that much travel time added. my car just took the piss the other day.

As I suspected, you have begun crawling out of the cracks...

There are a limited number of invites reserved for will call pickup and these are available on the website until 10PM, Tuesday 4/15. This is the ABSOLUTE LAST CALL and if you don't have an invite by then you will just have to wait till next year or go to AfterBurn in November.

PREHEAT ART GRANTS

Okay, I've looked over the budget at least 2 or 3 times and I keep coming up with the same thing...

There IS money for art grants!!!!!! So make sure to submit your application for an art grant before 4/18. Only people submitting a request for an art grant will be eligible. You can find the submittal requirements on the website www.floridapreheat.com on the Theme Camps/Art page.

Volunteer needed to pick up golf carts from Orlando

I'm looking for someone that has a trailer that can fit 2 golf carts on
it and can transport the golf carts from Orlando to Maddox Ranch in
Lakeland (You'll definitely get reimbursed for gas.). They need to be
picked up in Orlando on Wed 4/16 and returned by Tues 4/22. The
company will charge us a $200 pickup/delivery fee and I would rather
use that money for the effigy, art, and other good stuff at the event.
Please contact me ASAP if you can help with this.

What is PreHeat?

PreHeat is place where Burners from various cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies gather to participate in a temporary community filled with interactive art, music, and radical self expression. It is a place that exists only because those that attend choose to create it and is a direct expression of their collective and diverse visions. Planned as an official Regional Burn, the 10 Principles of Burning Man act as the cornerstone of PreHeat, but our expression of those principles extends far beyond the Playa.
There is no definition for Participation, rather it is up to each individual to determine its meaning to him and to appreciate the interpretations of others. Some choose to gift handmade trinkets, some gift their art or talent, and some their time; whatever form it takes the only common thread is that it is about sharing of yourself with your community and having the freedom to do so in whatever way you are comfortable.

Ticket Design Contest
As you all know PreHeat is about Participation and it’s going to be the event you create. So what better way to start off the event than to have the ticket design come from within the community? Submission of art will be accepted until February 1st. The top 5 designs will be posted on the PreHeat yahoo group and at floridapreheat.com and the community will select the winning design. Ticket sales will begin at the end of January.

Art Grants
A percentage of the profits are being set aside for art grants and will be granted on a lottery basis to those submitting the following:
1. Your full (real) name, street address, phone number and email address. This information is for financial bookkeeping and granting oversight purposes only.
2. A detailed description of the project. How will the piece/creativity be installed/performed and removed Leaving No Trace? Will the piece incorporate Flame Effects? If so, how will those Flame Effects be handled safely?
3. A thorough itemized budget. What materials will you be using and how much do they cost? Are there transportation costs? Will extra safety equipment and personnel be required?
4. A timeline detailing the planning, creation, installment, and removal of your project.

I spent a very pleasant afternoon meeting with Richard Maddox and am
happy to announce that PreHeat will take place at Maddox Ranch in
Lakeland, FL on 4/18 - 4/20. Now that we have the location secure,

PreHeat attendance is going to be capped, so if you want to get on the announcement list for when the first tier of invitations become available please send an email to: invite (at) floridapreheat (dot) com.

And if you want to get the adoration of all your peers and my undying love, then VOLUNTEER!! We especially will need certified medical staff and Rangers during the event. Send an email to volunteer (at) floridapreheat (dot) com to sign up.

Anyone wanting to get involved in building one of the effigies, bring large scale art to the event, and/or register a themecamp can send an email to themecamps (at) floridapreheat (dot) com.
