Anyone used it? do you love it? Hate it?
i'm on Elavil 30mg nightly which helps me sleep and has reduced my nerve pain. Thinking of asking the doc about Cymbalta which I've heard good things about. Feedback is welcome!

Re: Cymbalta?
Thu, December 15, 2005 - 9:07 AMI am on 90 mgs. of Cymbalta and I do feel it helped, mostly at first. I have other things going on as well and I think if I just push to exercise almost everyday, that helps as well. I do feel sometimes that the Cymbalta as pain relief has worn off. I think it helps the depression but I also feel that it might give me insomnia and reduce my appetite. I think I would have to go off to see if it still was helping as much. Overall, I think it is. Sometimes I feel like it causes me to sweat, though or get overheated easily.
It's okay really. I think you might have to try a higher dose if it doesn't work out the way you would have hoped it would.

Re: Cymbalta?
Mon, January 2, 2006 - 5:59 AMI've had Fibro for years and years - I just learned that Cymbalta can help this. I am on Effexor already for depression and was still moderately depressed. Then my doctor added Cymbalta to that. It has been 5 weeks and I am doing much better.
By the way - did anyone tell you that Elavil makes you want to eat nonstop? I gained a lot of weight while I was on it. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Mon, January 2, 2006 - 2:29 PMI didn't get a chance to eat ... I take Elavil, I sleep for 12 hours, lol.
Is your fatigue worse with Effexor? After about a year, it got so bad for me that I had to stop taking it.
Taking 5-HTP along with balancing my body's ph helped so much that I don't take any anti-depressants right now. So far, none of my family or friends have hinted around about me getting back on them, lol! -

Thu, January 12, 2006 - 11:29 AMYeah I sleep like a baby on Elavil and can easily sleep for 11 hours or so. I fix this problem by taking it well before bed time so it's wearing off by the time I get up.
Also, I have the craziest sugar cravings I've ever had. But shit, I feel so much better it seems totally worth it... if I can only figure out a way to shed the pounds. -

Thu, January 12, 2006 - 11:24 PMElavil is noted to cause weight gain.
I like the Cymbalta but if I miss a day of it, I feel withdrawal. I would be afraid to run out of it or not be able to afford it suddenly.
I had to up it from 30-90 mgs. though for it to have an effect on the Fibro, which I do feel it has helped by now. I just had to give it a chance. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Thu, January 12, 2006 - 11:25 PMthe only thing I don't like about it though, is that if you have any mood swing tendencies or bipolar type stuff going on, it can make a person edgy and wirey feeling. I have heard that from other bipolar folks as well.

Re: Cymbalta?
Thu, March 23, 2006 - 4:20 PMI've been taking Elavil for a week. Just did a search on it here and see I am not the only one catching up on years of sleep! Is there any hope of this wearing off, so that I can function at work and not fall asleep whenever I stop moving? Doctor isn't returning my calls. not fun. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, March 24, 2006 - 4:35 PMI could only take Elavil at night - I used it as a sleeping pill rather than whatever the heck it's really for (my stupid doc just gave me stuff & said "Here. take this." "Why?" "because it's indicated for fibromyalgia". I have a new doc, now, lol)
Good luck!

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 10:42 PMI tried it. I couldn't stand the side effects. I was on it for a month and then tapered back off of it. I ouldn't eat a single thing without force feeding it and being very careful not to get dizzy, it made me VERY nauseated. Also, it's just me but Elavil type meds don't work on me, so I became depressed, go figure!
I heard it was a good thing if it works...but not for me. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Sat, January 14, 2006 - 9:19 AMWhat is Cymbalta? What is it designed to do?
I was on Elavil and it knocked me out for many hours which just didn't work for me because I had to be up with my son every morning at the crack of dawn. God forbid he would wake up in the middle of the night cuz i'd be too out of it to care for him! Fibro was not designed with parents in mind.. I also noticed it gave me dry mouth. I tried Trazadone as well for sleep, it was worse than Elavil.
I don't get the use of drugs not intended for sleep or pain relief (but as anti-psychotics!) used for Fibro. Can anyone help explian it?
It definetly dosn't work for me, something about it makes me feel wrong.. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Tue, February 7, 2006 - 1:51 PMMy official position on Cymbalta, after giving it about six months is that it is some jagged pill.
At 90mg.s I finally just started feeling so sick and jacked up my something worse than long-last cocaine it feels like.
And they wanted me to go to 120 mg. for peripheral neuropathy, which I think over time, wears off in benefit with this stuff.
I am glad someone else shared about the feeling of having to force feed yourself and feeling sick to your stomack after eating. I dont' care how much a person might think they want to lose weight so maybe Cymbalta is the way to go. There is nothing worse than feeling the loss of a normally healthy appetite and feeling sick from food and looking at it. And then if there is a sleep problem this medication can add to it greatly.
I am now back down to 30mg. of my own accord and have plans to taper off now that I know it is doing what it was supposed to do for Fibromyalgia anyway.
This medication is also very addictive and you might find yourself sick as a dog if you miss even a day.

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, February 10, 2006 - 8:33 PM"what is cymbalta? what is it designed to do?"
Cymbalta is an anti-psychotic med often prescribed for bipolar disorder and
obssessive-compulsive disorder.
In layperson's terms, it was originally designed to shut down the
parts of your brain that cause you to be mentally fixated on things in an all-encompasing
way . . as in when someone becomes manic and can't focus at all or when
someone struggling with OCD can't stop ruminating on something.
Not sure how this correlates with helping to alleviate chronic pain, but
I've started to hear of people using it for that purpose . . so far, mostly folks
with injury-related pain, though.

Re: Cymbalta?
Wed, September 27, 2006 - 6:56 PMCymbalta is not an anti-psychotic. It has FDA indications to treat Major Depressive Disorder and Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic Pain. All antidepressants now carry a boxed warning around suicidal thinking/ideation in children and adolescents so Cymbalta is no different than Effexor-Zoloft-Lexapro et al. The anti-psychotic you may be confusing Cymbalta with is Symbyax another Lilly drug, which is the only drug FDA indicated to treat bipolar depression.
There are two studies in Fibromyalgia for Cymbalta that show some help for some people suffering from this kind of pain but it is not FDA indicated for treatment of fibro. It works on serotonin and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters associated with depression and modulation of pain signals in the spinal cord. Pain is in our brains as the signal from our bodies means nothing till our brains qualify the signal and our bodies response, thats whay truly one person's experience can be excriciating and another tolerable. The Cymbalta molecule blocks the reuptake pump on a nerve cell causing more of the neurotransmitters to be left in the synaptic gap. It is like Effexor but different in that the molecule has a stronger blocking effect, particularly on norepinephrine(NE) . NE is associated with our cognitive functioning, alertness, control of blood pressure, body temp regulation and along with serotonin the control of pain pathways in the spine.
Some people may get help from this med others it may not help. Thats why it can be so frustrating as it is still a trial and error system as medicine's knowledge of the brain and nervous system is like looking at an iceberg on the ocean: you only see 1/10 to 1/4 of what's there.

Re: Cymbalta?
Sun, March 26, 2006 - 10:14 AMAs people with FMS I think many of us experience paradoxical reactions to drugs. However, I don't think that a lot of our prescribing physicians are sufficiently aware of this fact and the need for extra monitoring because of it.
Cymbalta, is similar to a drug I was given, Seroquel. I did experience some pain relief from it but unfortunately, combined with other drugs I had been given at the time it resulted in a psychotic break, the ramifications of which were devastating.
I will never again take ANY drug (herbal supplement, vitamin etc.) without doing a lot of research of my own coupled with a giant heaping helping of doubt regardless of the reassurances of the Dr. prescribing it.
We've got to have people around us who will support us and tell us when we seem to be behaving oddly after a drug introduction and then do something about it as well. That might be another topic altogether but please everyone, be aware and be careful. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 5:28 PMabsolutely. I have just had my third bad experience with a medication in a year.
The first was actually a decongestant for some very irritating ear issues. The ear issues were resolved -- but I ended up with high blood pressure! Blood pressure medicine I was put on made me dizzy for a week -- the reaction I have to most medications. Once I stopped taking that too, my blood pressure returned to normal. My health however has not...
Recently I thought I'd found heaven with Elavil. Really in terms of sleep, I think I had. The pain was hardly noticeable! But the lightheadedness seemed to be getting worse, so after about 6 weeks the doc took me off it. I never got above 25 mg.
Two days later I went to my 'regular' doctor, to hear about my high chlorestorol. I was shocked to hear that I am not only 'pre-diabetic' but that she believed the Elavil pushed me into that state. Additionally my BP was quite high.
I told her I had been switched to Cymbalta. She told me I needed to get off of these weight gaining type of drugs. She said to ask the other doc for Nurontin.
I have not yet thouroughly researched Cymbalta or Nurontin. I just know that I stupidly took the docs advice and took the first Cymbalta on the first day of my period. It was a particularly bad day, resulted in lots of shaking and near puking, and I almost fell over while walking across the parking lot at work. I couldn't tell where my feet were. It was scary. I woke up this morning with the shakes again after a sweaty evening and night. I've been feeling better this afternoon. I'm trying to give the thing a chance.
Boy this whole thing is really turning me off to drugs all together. I held out for so long....now I see why.
I know it is soon to judge, and I am trying to assimilate all the new information, feelings, and to-do's related to this (start the south beach diet pronto, find some crazy way to up my excercise, get diabetic kit, stick myself twice a day, take my bp twice a day -- my bp machine suddenly doesn't want to turn off -- so it just keeps squeezing. It's a stressful experience! - Just one more thing to do, try to dig up any warranty info or get a new one.)
Guess I'm just glad this info was here from before, and would love to hear from anyone. Yesterday was a dreadful day, I was so overwhelmed. The diabetic thing really worries me. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 6:13 PMMy mom gained "pre-diabetic" status a few years ago; so bad that they nearly put her on insulin! They gave her time to get it under control with diet, though. Be aware of simple carbs vs complex carbs ... things like white flour & white sugar dump almost directly into the blood stream as glucose.
Read labels carefully! My mom didn't change her level of exercise, just her diet, and got it under control in a few months.
Good luck!

Re: Cymbalta?
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 7:18 PMIf you feel like complete shit with this drug Fang why not get rid of it? It's supposed to make you feel better not worse. And remember, Doctor is not spelled G O D. They make huge mistakes daily and you never know if you've got the one who graduated at the bottom of his class either.
Neurton is gabapentin. I've had a lot of experience and great success with this drug. I can titrate the dose with large mg. capsules and low mg. capsules that I can almost, almost manage. The problem with gabapentin is that is causes insulin changes which result in appetite changes i.e. the munchies. I've gained weight with this damn drug and I hate that side effect and may exchange pain for weightloss. What a choice. The good thing about gabapentin is that it is supposed to be realtively easy on the liver, excreted quickly and almost impossible to overdose on. The body just doesn't absorb doses above 3000mg. Not that I want to test this information. I need my liver.
The newest drug in the neurontic family is pregabalin. There are several studies you can read online which speak of it's high degree of efficacy with FMS. It's from Pfizer and also called Lyrica. I have a prescription for it but haven't tried it yet. My pain management specialist told me that there were recent reports of some odd psychiatric side effects. That people are comparing the effect to that of street drugs. My pharmacist looked into this and reports that it can, in some people, some of the time react like they've had a lot of diazapam. I don't know if that makes me want it more or less, lol. At any rate, I'm waiting until the pharmacist goes to the information session next week and asks the questions I've asked her to submit.
Does this help any? -

Re: Cymbalta?
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 7:44 PMwow, yes. Thank you. all information is helping. The reason I'm trying to give the Cymbalta a chance is this: It was only two days, and the menstrual pain is ocasionally brutal with digestive and other symptoms. For years I have thought I probably have endometriosis after many emergency room visits and specialist visits but never really wanting to get the surgery which much of the time doesn't really solve the problem (from what I've heard - it may have changed since I last considered it.) Of course they can't actually diagnose it till they go in there with the lazer and camera.
In recent years I have come to think that, endometriosis or not, it is tied in with the fibro. It is hard to judge the Cymbalta based on two days during a highly stressful time that may have been just as dramatic without it. Every 3 or 4 months, for many years, I'll have one or two days that almost cause me to go to the emergency room begging for a hysterectomy. Have tried all the traditional things for that. Current Doctor just told me about something else -- Cataflam?
Yeah this is all new to me as I didn't really trust the doctors for a long time. I have always leaned toward alternative medicine when appropriate. I miss my accupuncturist.
Thanks so much.

Re: Cymbalta?
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 11:36 PMHi......
I currently take Effexor XR 375mg per day (the max dose) and a small dose of Prozac, 20mg. I had heard about Cymbalta and even though it is labled for depression, one of the un-labled uses is for pain associated with Fibromyalgia. I had to completely wean myself - under doc's supervision - off of the Effexor because she told me that I could NOT take both at the same time. When I finally got onto the Cymbalta, my depression spiraled down until I felt rock bottom after six weeks. I told/asked my psychiatrist to please put me back on the Effexor ASAP.
It didn't work for me, it made my situation worse. But, after reading everyone's posts, it does sound like it helps some people.
For sleep, I take Klonopin, Sonata and Seroquel.

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 8:02 AMWow. I hadn't read this thread before. This is all very disturbing to me. I take 125 mg of Elavil a day. I had all the same side effects talked about here, but my doctor wrote them all off and insisted most of them were not caused by the drug, even though I felt certain they were. He did however, give me free license to adjust the dose up or down as I saw fit, as long as I did not go over five.
Yesterday I lowered the dose to 100 mg. I had horrendous nightmares and did not sleep well at all, but I am going to gradually reduce the dose. I hope eventually to be off of it entirely. It seems like we all suffer as much with the medications as we do with the Fibro. I am going to attempt to do it medicine free. Wish me luck. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 2:35 PMYes, thank you. I tapered one already, but it's not going so well, so I may try half at a time.
The more I chat with people here, the more I am convinced that 'traditional medicine' is not the answer. I am going to see a woman who is a physical therapist as well as a chiropractor and comes very highly recommended for the FM as well as TMJ, which I also have. She specializes in myofascial therapy, which I have done fairly well with. It's time for another perspective.

Fri, May 19, 2006 - 5:20 PMPerhaps a mix of traditional Western medicine, alternative medicine and if possible depending upon where you live - Traditional Chinese Medicine. I've had good results with acupuncture, moderate chiropractic and Massage Therapy.
Reading the posts about Cymbalta leave me sincerely doubting it's therapeutic effectiveness in the long run and very disturbed by its side effects in the short term.
Personally, I think we're having far too many drugs thown at us. Is it because physicians are frustrated, ill informed and really don't know what to do? Do they think that we go away happy if we go away medicated?
I'm so tired of fibromyalgia. I read somewhere that Dr.'s are trying to change the name. Maybe it'll feel better when it's called chronic myoencepholophy or whatever the change is. lol -

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 6:33 PMHonestly, I think that the doctors have written us all off as quacks, and figure they can give us antidepressents as it is all in our heads, tell us its for sleep/pain NOT because we are depressed, and then hope they don't have to see us again for a little bit.
I would type 'LOL' here but it is not funny. I am so tired of being labelled a hypochondriac.....

Re: Cymbalta?
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 11:53 AMAnyone used it? do you love it? Hate it?
I"ve been on 60mg of cymbalta since it first came out. I aske my endocrinologist about it after i had heard about it at a NAMI meeting. (National Alliance for Mentally ILL). My son, who died in Aug, was bi-polar and an addict...
Anyway, for me, it has helped my mind tremendously. My pain, is hard to tell as i was in so much stress caring for my son and then he died. It's been 9 mos. since his sudden death (his heart just stopped) and am finally feeling better physically...the pain is never ALL the way gone but i am able to function.
At this time i am also on vicodin es as i have to have surgery on both my knees..i have to use a walker and i'm only 50!
Nothing takes away all the physical pain. Or i should say nothing i'm willing to go on..right now.
I also have degenerative disc disease, and bone spurs and arthritis.
Luckily my doctor does believe in fibro and he is conducting a study. (he is based in Reno, NV)
I am part of a National study because of him. I feel sooo blessed to have found him. He totally understands.. he is not like any other doctor i have ever met. if you need 10 mins. w/ him ..you got it..if you need an hour he takes an hour with you.!!
It is still too early for me to say cymbalta works on my physical pain...because i am taking the other as well.
One thing i'd like to say is...remember everybody's body system is different. Not everyone will react the same to one drug as another will. Sounds simple but not everyone realizes this.
Also, my doctor does not believe that exercise is good..necessarily..depending on YOUR condition. He told me this after i told him swimming was starting to wear me out.. the only form of exercise that i could cope w/ doing. So i lightened up on swimming and have felt somewhat better...hard again, tho, to really know since i lost my son... all i do know for sure is my physical pain was worsening when i swam..all of a sudden it worsened.
I do garden & do walk as much as i can..but then i have to rest up for up to 2 days afterwards depending on how much i do.
Good luck to you whatever you decide.
This is fhe first time i took a brand new medicine w/o fear. AND my doctor explained to me that it isn't all that NEW...it combines several ingredients that have been in older medicines.
At first i had some weird side effects such as sweating and nausea and feeling a bit strang(er) lol..but then..w/in a week , in the beginning, i felt much much better mentally.
Hope i make sense and i know i'm responding late to this Isaiah's question but i just found this group.
Good luck to all.

Sun, May 21, 2006 - 12:04 PMMy doc also has me on a presc. form of vit D as i was severely low in vit D in my body. I've been on 50,000 iu 1/week or 10 days or so..and it has also helped me. ALso, he has been letting me have vit b12 shots for about 5 mos. now. 2 x mos. or so. Also helps.
My son was on all sorts of the medicines you all are talking about. He had several severe reactions to especially seroquel.
Others i know have done well w/ it.
Like i said...all body systems are different and meds that work for one may or may not work for another.
My daughter has had type 1 diabetes since she was 10 years old. she is now almost 27... she does take daily shots etc. but has been able to live excellent heatlthy (so far thank goodness) life because she exercises like she breathes and eats right. Also was able to have one child (my sweet granddaughter who is 7) who is diabetes free (so far) and in excellent help. She can take 9 mile walks w/ my daughter and son-in-law! Awesome.

Mon, May 22, 2006 - 2:31 AMHi.....
I meant to add that when I had to go off of Cymbalta, it really sucked and I felt TERRIBLE. When I told my doctor, she said 'oh, yes, it does cause flu-like symptoms' She would not let me begin another antidepressant until I was weaned off of the Cymbalta completely.
I am much happier on Effexor XR. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Wed, June 28, 2006 - 6:08 PMIm on day 2 of cymbalta. so far ive had a few side effects but my pain has decreased alot. i also had one of the best nites sleep in a long time last nite. didnt feel horrible when i woke either. i really hope that this continues for me. i had a long day at work today and normally id be in so much pain that all i can do is lay down when i get home. today the amt of pain i have is so minor that ive gotten a few things done around the house. i dont have intentions of staying on this forever, as i believe in giving my body a rest from meds but if this continues to help that would be great. my daughter has also been informed to let me know if i have major mood swings on this. im starting to log daily what im experiencing with this drug. and at the moment its the only one im on. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 1:22 PMI have been taking Cymbalta for about a month and a half now I think. At first the side effects were nearly unbearable, but I held out for a bit and all is back to normal. In fact, so normal I am surprised. I don't feel like I'm 'on drugs', which I did with Elavil. That one just didn't agree with me.
I am trying to reach the doctor though, becuase he directed I use it in the morning unless the nausea and drowsiness were too much. So I have been using it at nite. He has asked me to switch to morning, but that causes the problems to disrupt my entire morning, and then I can't sleep at night. I haven't been able to get him to explain if there is some reason I should not be taking it before bed. -

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 1:23 PMsorry, forgot to mention -- the pain control aspect of Cymbalta seems to be working quite well. A little less effective than the elavil perhaps, but hard to say. I like to feel what my body is doing so that I can address the problems with stretching, rest, excercise. So I like that I can feel things, even if it is discomfort.

Re: Cymbalta?
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 1:06 PMi've been on cymbalta for about a year now. i was on the highest dose of effexor for 9 years - not a good idea, people. i went thru the worst withdrawal i have ever had when i went off effexor - i had to take 2 weeks off of work. i switched to cymbalta. after my withdrawal experience with effexor, i didn't want to be on anything, but my depression came back, so on cymbalta i went. it's been fine. the doc upped my dose this spring. cymbalta is relatively new - lilly marketed it as a antidepressant that curbs the physical pain effects of depression. i don't know if i buy that. i didn't feel any extraordinary pain relief from it. it does help my depression though.
i was on elavil for a while and that did not work for me at all. i currently have a baaad sleeping problem, and i am going the mayo clinic in 2 weeks for a sleep study. i can't wait.
anyway, if you have to be on an antidepressant, cymbalta is fine, but it works in the same way that effexor does - on the seratonin side, so you will feel withdrawals much quicker if you miss a dose. good luck!
