I've been mostly MIA from here, due to several life changes (layoff, moving and such). Sorry for the absence. But I immediately thought of you all when I heard the fascinating news that came out yesterday. If you missed it, I thought you'd like to hear about it.
There's a retrovirus that was discovered in tissue from men with prostate cancer, and was then found in a large percentage of CFS patients. Hmmmm..... very interesting. There's a lot more research and testing to be done, but if you would like to read more about it, here are some links to get you started:
<www.nytimes.com/2009/10/09...virus.html>
<www.wpinstitute.org/xmrv/xmrv_qa.html>
I don't know what this will mean for many "invisible" diseases, but there's some hope around this discovery that a "cause" or at least a major contributor to come of our diseases/syndromes may have been found. The hope in that: perhaps some effective treatments can be developed. We'll see.

Re: XMRV - this retrovirus may be associated with CFS & FMS
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 9:03 PMWelcome back, Leaf - sorry about the life changes, those always stress me out.
I think this is the same article my husband showed me
www.nytimes.com/2009/10/09...9virus.html
Sorry, I couldn't get the links to work for me, I hope this one does. This has me excited, because if this retrovirus does indeed contribute to or cause our respective illnesses - fibro, CFS, etc, then anti-retrovirals might be a real treatment, and more people would realize that this is not a psychiatric problem! This will set off a flurry of new studies! Maybe an effective treatment?
I really miss dancing. -

Sun, October 11, 2009 - 7:36 PMSorry about the links, Molly. Yes, the one you posted is one of the ones I posted. Here's the other one:
www.wpinstitute.org/xmrv/xmrv_qa.html
I'm kind of excited about it, but I think it will be a while before much comes of it. Also, from what I understand, anti-retrovirals can cause some pretty significant side effects. That could mean choices between significant-what-we-know, and significant-what-we-don't-know. I'll hold out hope for something better than that, of course.

Re: XMRV - this retrovirus may be associated with CFS & FMS
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 1:55 PMNot to get anyone's hopes up too high, but there is a test coming out in a few weeks to detect XMRV. I don't know if it tests for antibodies or viral load. I'm on the waiting list to order it, if it doesn't turn out to be too expensive. I'll also probably wait for research to tell whether XMRV is the cause of CFS and/or FMS, or just opportunistic. Here's the link to the article/ad for anyone that's interested (I know it's a commerce site):
www.prohealth.com/library/s...rticle.cfm
If XMRV turns out to be the cause of fibro and CFS, there will very likely be an actual treatment, maybe even a cure. How fucking cool would that be? I can't help it, my hopes are high. Shh, don't burst my bubble.
