Heart Disease: Jaida's Personal Story

As some of you may know, I had quadruple by-pass surgery July 2007 at the age of 49. Heart disease first touched my life when I was eleven, which is how old I was when my dad died at age 34 from a sudden heart attack. I suffered my own mild heart attack when I was 32 years old and since then, it’s just been a fact of my life. I have lived with this condition for 18 years and I have been very fortunate to have benefited from the technology and research that has been developed since my dad suffered his cardiac arrest in 1969.

Heart disease is the #1 cause of death for men and women in developed Western countries with cancer ranked as the #2 cause of death. However, cancer research and education garners about two-thirds more funding than heart disease does. Women do not realize they are affected by heart disease until they have their first, and often fatal, heart attack. The symptoms women experience frequently do not follow the “classic” heart attack signs and therefore, women tend to blow off how they are feeling and attribute it to something else. I know I did. I experienced three separate episodes of cardiac distress and only two of
them exhibited the same type of symptoms.

I was dancing one evening with Folk Infusion when suddenly, I could not catch my breath. I was desperately sucking in air, chest heaving, all that cardio activity forced the capillaries and arteries to develop new secondary pathways to get around the blockages as well as strengthened my heart muscle. MD advised me to take it easy for several weeks. Isvari practically had to sit on me to prevent me from dancing too soon. I did not want to admit that Old Heart Disease had come a-knockin’ on my door again even though I know full well that it is a progressive disease. However, once again, belly dancing saved me. Without the benefit of dancing regularly, I would never have known how close I was to having a fatal cardiac event.

So, this Hafla for Heart Disease fundraiser is special to me. It is dedicated to educating people, women in particular, about heart disease. What better backdrop to share this than through belly dance, an art form that attracts mostly women, is an enjoyable cardio building exercise, and the primary reason I am still here today.

Folk Infusion, the dance troupe with whom I perform, is sponsoring a Hafla for Heart Disease on Saturday, August 16th 2008. The fundraiser will be held in my back yard and all proceeds will go to the American Heart Association. The suggested donation is $5 and tickets are now available. Performers and volunteer worker bees get in free.

There will also be a prize drawing and those tickets will be $1 each. We have over $1000 in valued items and more to come. Some of the nifty items being donated for this prize drawing include a $350 in certificates for services at Side Show Studios tattoo parlor, beautiful Cookie Lee jewelry, awesome Kuchi items from Black Tassel, Jamba Juice and Morton's Steakhouse certificates and several gift cards and items from local merchants.

Hafla Performers..

Hello My Friends,

This is a reminder regarding the Hafla for Heart Disease Event on Sat Evening Aug 16th 2008. We are having a fundraiser for the American Heart Assoc for Jaida's Anniversary of her Bi-Pass.

Hafla for Heart Disease further details...

Folk Infusion and Friends are hosting a small hafla as a fundraiser for the American Heart Association and would like to invite our dance community.

This is an outdoor residencial hafla based in the Sacramento area. We are anticipating the show to start at 7Pm Saturday Aug 16th. We are currently collecting performers willing to donate their time to the cause.

R.I.P Captain Scott

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I make this post about a man who touched and inspired everyone who knew him. Though we weren't close, he always greeted me with a smile and a warm, sincere hug. He was a great artist and player of his life and character. He is without question one of my greatest inspiration in my historical clothing endeavourers and I will miss him greatly. Yesterday evening on his way home from work, Scott Millbrandt, whom was well known as Captain Scott, was taken from this world quickly, and it's thought did not suffer long. He was a beautiful human, artist, man, friend, inspiration and most of all, a damn brilliant Pirate. He leaves behind a legacy a chivalry that I hope never fades.

Ducal Prize Tourney in Woodland Fairgrounds, Ca
Classes are Saturday Sept 2nd
Casbah Party is Sunday Eve Sept 3rd
SCA Site fee is listed as $10.
Fees for classes and Casbah are additionally as follows.
$5 Per Class
Multi Class discount for 3 classes or more at $3 each
Or all day wrist pass for $20.
*Tickets to the Sunday Casbah party with live drumming and open floor dancing will be included with class tickets*
Casbah tickets will otherwise be $3 per person

Morning Stretch Class is an early am wake up. Light stretching, light yoga and muscle warm up. Suitable for all ages. Located in the Kali Ma encampment Main area at 9-9:30

Beginning Dance Class is a very basic introduction to general bellydance concepts. Focus will be toward new dancers. Ages 10 and up. Located in the Kali Ma encampment Main area at 9:45-10:45 Teacher Julie

OT: Bellydancing deemed inappropriate?

Just saw this on the news: a dancer in Modesto who was slated to perform at the Modesto Library was apparently barred from dancing there. The reason is supposed "suitability" of venue. I wonder how much of this is prejudice due to misunderstanding of the art...?

A canceled belly dancing class at the Stanislaus County Public Library has grown into a battle pitting First Amendment rights against appropriate use of taxpayer dollars.

The belly dancing class, scheduled in April, was canceled after county Chief Executive Officer Rick Robinson and several county supervisors questioned whether it was an appropriate program for the library.

That raised the ire of several area groups who view the cancellation as censorship. Groups that have raised objections to the cancellation include the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, some city chapters of Friends of the Library, the California Library Association and alocal group called Liberal Voices.

Liberal Voices, described by members as an offshoot of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stanislaus County, met Thursday night to discuss launching a petition drive to ask that the class be reinstated and that the county Board of Supervisors stop censoring the library.

"Once they start abrogating free speech, it's easier to do more," said Pat Egenberger, a retired teacher and a member of Liberal Voices. "The first step doesn't seem like a big deal, but it empowers people to continue to restrict information."

Supervisors said they don't see it as a censorship issue.

"I complained about it as soon as I saw it," Supervisor Jim DeMartini said. "My contention is that it is not what library funds are there to be used for. The mission statement of the library isfor literacy programs. This wasn't someone who had written a book on belly dancing, it was entirely different."

'Proper use of public funds'

Chris Wilde, who was to conduct the class, said the session would have touched on the history and cultural significance of the dance, the costuming and movements, and would have included a demonstration.

DeMartini said the library has a $30,000 fund for such programs. "I've asked for an accounting of that stuff. We don't have to provide that money. It's about the proper use of public funds," he said.

Supervisor Bill O'Brien agreed.

"What does belly dancing have to do with libraries? It makes more sense in a community center or recreation program," O'Brien said.

"I'm not after censoring, but we want to use tax dollars for what they were intended for: literacy and books,"O'Brien said. "The library to me is about books."

A spin-dating program held at the library also drew criticism from supervisors. "It helped 45 to 64-year-olds find dates. I have no clue what that had to do with reading books," O'Brien said.

What's the library for?

Janis O'Driscoll, chairwoman of the Intellectual Freedom Committee of the California Library Association, said that's too narrow a definition of a library.

"It really has to do with access to information. Books, magazines, audio, video, electronic databases and programs. Sometimes the best way to get information is from another person," O'Driscoll said.

"When a belly dancing program is canceled, the culture for whom that dance is important doesn't get to tell others about it, and the ones outside that culture lose the opportunity to learn about it," she said. "It's the same as barring access to information in a book or magazine."

County CEO Robinson met with Stanislaus Librarian Vanessa Czopek on Friday and struck a compromising tone.

"Our library system kind of doubles as a community center in many of the communities we serve, and some of the activities could be supported as a community center program. That may not be a bad thing," Robinson said. "We need to make sure our mission is consistent with what is delivered."

Robinson said Czopek is meeting with library groups and researching what sort of programs are offered at other library systems.

The library's monthly calendar will be changed to better describe programs, Robinson said, "so there is a clear understanding of the program offered and the cultural or social nexus to library service, literary or community service."

Supervisor Jeff Grover, while agreeing with other supervisors that belly dancing didn't fall into his definition of what library funds should be used for, said he thought the issue was being blown out of proportion.

"These folks are really quick tocry censorship. … The board sets policy, it hires the CEO to enact it, and the librarian works for the CEO," Grover said. "This is much ado about not much."

But some in the community disagree. Martin Zonligt, a retired Stanislaus County reference librarian and a member of Liberal Voices, recalled a library censorship battle from 35 years ago over photographs of farm labor housing.

The county counsel at the time, citing the state Education Code, advised that the county librarian, not the Board of Supervisors, was responsible for determining the nature of the materials and programming offered by the library, Zonligt said.

"The community appreciates and wants its libraries. The public ground swell is behind the library," he said.

So, obviously our year of 2005 was an awesome beginning. Plans laid, dancing done, new things learned, fun had... So. What do you hope for 2006? What would you like to accomplish, what do you want to learn, where do you want to go, what's your dream?

Me, I want to be able to continue to pick up the stuff we've been doing, continue to strengthen and condition my body, take new classes and not be terrified to try them, and have fun with my tribe o' people. Oh, and have a kickass time at TribalFest.

First off I would like to say Thank you to Mina and Dalloua for such a fun event. Everyone really had a good time.
Thank you to all the performers and supporters of this event. Without the audience and participants this wouldn't have been such a fantastic night.
Especially Thank you to all the Sunday class participants. I appreciate your flexability. I know that 8Am came early but I am happy that you were able to make it through the 3 hour class.
Meeting went very well and everyone was great. It was wonderful to have everyone together. Thank you for sticking through the paperwork and long meeting. It was good to rejoice in our newest endeavor.

Can't wait for the meeting very exceiting stuff. Food, party, meeting and performance all in 1 day. I'm really impressed with the fact that we haven't even had our 1st meeting and we already have 21 members :)
For people staying the night please remember to bring your sleeping comforts and we will figure out where to arrange everyone after we return from the show. I anticipate around 10:30 or 11. Additionally, the cafe where the show is has food, coffee and beer on tap so please remember to bring cash to support the local venue.
Feel free to post to this tribe any pictures (that are appropriate) of Folk members or other people with permission only! Please label photos with venue (if applicable) and names.
For those attending class Sunday! Please remember to bring
comfortable workout clothes and a water container. Your class is schedualed as soon as we rise and will be 4-5 hours.
Keep this in mind when you determine when to sleep Saturday. Bring yourself a snack or breakfast food as fuel for the day.

It will be a pleasure to share the journey with you and I look forward to seeing all of you soon.

So, like, I signed up to bring something "carb-friendly", and I was thinking about making something with lentils -- is that okay with people? (I know *I* love them, but I don't know about other people)

Or I can "cheat" and make lentils and rice which is absolutely yummy but not low-carb. Who else (besides me) is supposed to be doing (mostly) low-carb?
