In this photo the garden has been assembled and is ready to plant. Cut 2x2" boards sit across the top of the box to clearly divide the garden into sixteen separate sections, each of which shall be planted with a variety of vegetables using successive sowing throughout the season.

The basic ingredients for an orthodox "square foot garden" as per Mel Bartholomew. The open-bottom box is made of two 8' 2x12" pine boards, cut in half to create a bottomless box. Weed barrier (cardboard will work) underneath is optional, and "soil" shall be assembled from the adjacent inputs: one-third peat moss, one-third vermiculite and one-third mixed compost and various manures. Double Digging

I know it's not permaculture, but this is an animated GIF I created for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biointensive, showing the basic technique for "double digging" as popularized by Alan Chadwick and others. Double-digging uses a spade and fork to loosen soil more deeply than usual, while disturbing soil layers less. Loose soil has better drainage and aeration, to improve the ability of plants and other organisms to work their magic: creating, holding and finding what they need.
