Obamas to Plant White House Vegetable Garden
by Marian Burros, New York Times, March 19, 2009
WASHINGTON — On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets (the president doesn’t like them) but arugula will make the cut.
While the organic garden will provide food for the first family’s meals and formal dinners, its most important role, Mrs. Obama said, will be to educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at time when obesity has become a national concern.
In an interview in her office, Mrs. Obama said, “My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.”

Re: The Obama Victory Garden
Mon, March 23, 2009 - 9:09 PMA friend I met through Tribe started a local gardening group for men, and we have had 4 meetings so far where we go to a different member's garden and talk and work on it and teach each other about gardening with the goal of food sustainability. For the next two weeks we'll be going to the land of professional gardeners, I don't know about next week's place but the week after will be a guy who has been selling at the city farmers' market for a decade.
It's great to find yourself part of a presidential grassroots movement before he even starts it ;-}

Along the same lines, I've personally begun to feel some hope for the recessions more positive outcomes. More food being grown in back yards and hopefully people realizing what they don't need.

Ironically enough there are bills in the House and Senate linking Monsanto (Look it up if you don't know who they are) and the current administration and their hopes of claiming the rights to Organic Farming and Backyard Farms. Claiming food sources such as those are not regulated and may be a "risk to public safety".
This reminds me of Bush reading a book upside down to young school children after hearing about the 9/11 attacks. Looking out for our future, right?
