what a dream

I've been thinking of just this idea ever since I returned to Canada. We lived in Tokyo for six years. I saw so many people growing (not food) in so many containers, since no one has any 'land' to use. When I came back to North America all I could see was the disrespectful waist of land. What are we doing as a culture growing this grass stuff? At the time the food crisis was already looking for me. I've been waiting for it so happen since I was in university.
Now all I can think of is the Victory Gardens during the war and looking at what others are doing.

I am walking my talk and almost the entire lot which my rental house is on is being used to grow food or healing flowers. Since it is a rental and we moved in in April we have not used up every inch. But we sure worked hard at making it productive. Its amazing. Thank goodness for the Japanese self-sustainable farmer who took us under his wings.

Now I have to learn to get this message across.

    Yeah!

    If your neighbors are down, but don't have time to commit, perhaps everyone could chip in 20 bucks a month or so to materials for building beds, soil amendments, seed, etc. Then the place would be kickin in a just a few months! Having this little bit of money at a time would help get things done in small, easily manageable chunks too.

    Why aren't Victory Gardens everywhere right now? Lets get the green "keeping up with the Joneses going!"

    my wife and I have been watching a very interesting bbc docu called "Wartime Kitchen Garden" about the conversion of almost all available land to food production during the Bombardment and Rationing. Great tips and tricks in there.

    Before cars, how far away did most peoples' food come from? As close as possible!

    ;-}

      true true. My step mom still tells the stories that her parents told her from when they were still in Poland, avoiding the Germans...They grew what ever they cold where ever they could. You'd be surprised how yummy spuds that grew in an old tub taste with gravy and the ability to still breath free fresh air..They managed to help feed almost 200 folks from several different families one just one garden that took a space of about 75 by 45 feet...The best strawberries I have ever tasted grow in an old Doc Martin 10 eye boot in my mom's front yard...

        Oh, and an after thought...My mothers father used to say this when us grandkids would throw out half a sammich., or toss out the rest o the chips. ."There you go...'If you ain't got nothin' to nothin' with, then do what you can with what ya do have, cuz most times it'll be plenty for you and you will always have just enough to save for later or share with one who has even less than you do...Now pick up that sammich and either finish it , bag it for later or share it with someone else damn it." Gotta love the wisdom of an old man right...
