I had assumed that frybread came around because it's the logical thing to make out of the crappy commissary ingredients (including flour and shortening and not a whole lot else) that were grudgingly provided to people pushed onto reservations. I didn't realize it evolved from an older bread recipe.
GOD I love that stuff. totally horrible for you but so tasty.

Tue, August 11, 2009 - 1:20 PMMmmm, bannock... my mother used to make "Navajo Fry Bread" as a treat, and it is one of the only foods that I will brave home oil-frying to have! While in Nepal, I made the happy discovery of very similar fry bread. It is typically eaten covered in honey, peanut butter, or butter (from various sources) for calories in colder areas. I gained a couple of pounds on that trip that I'm sure were solely from fry bread...
