I wanted to throw something into the mix here...my two cents.
I worked the gate at the last AWL gathering and noticed that quite a few people didnt come prepared to kick down the financial support asked for (some even refused to give anything), even though it wasnt a donation based party.
Throwing these types of events costs quite a bit of money for the focalizers, who seriously lay it on the line for us to have a place to celebrate together and for the DJs who invest their money into new beats for us to vibe to. The focalizers know their budgets...no ones trying to get rich off a party...their trying to pay for equipment, maintenance, gas to haul everything around, rentals, djs, etc so that we can all have this church to come back to to revel in joy and connection together. When money is made beyond the parties budget and you look at that amount by all the hours put into making it happen, promoters and djs are often the lowest paid per hour people.
While I havent been in this scene here for long, I have been involved in underground events for 15 years, and have seen promoters who throw great parties get burnt out and stop creating gatherings due to lack of financial support from the community. After losing money on multiple events, it becomes very trying and sometimes impossible to continue laying it on the line like that even when doing it for the love. I have also seen DJs who do it for the love give up due to how expensive beats are when trying to keep the rest of their financial lives in balance.
I would HATE to see that happen here, as the scene here in Eugene is sooooo amazing.
Lets all show our gratitude for what these people do for us with investment in a sustainable and balanced scene, no matter how good of friends you are with the crew or djs. If youre such good friends with them, support what theyre doing financially. Please come prepared to give to the cause...if you know you cant afford the amount asked for, talk to the focalizers before the party, ask if you can work staff for the event.
We are so lucky and should be so thankful for what we have here. It is a gift, not a right. I have been missing ths type of underground scene for years in San Francisco and New York, where the promoters shifted from outdoor family gatherings to club based nights in order to keep it sustainable. The Eugene area seems to be one of the last truly underground based dance communities on the west coast...lets keep it that way!
Its our scene...we all create it with our actions and intentions. Lets keep this scene here thriving! Show the love at the gate, please =)

Re: Supporting Our Scene
Wed, May 30, 2007 - 8:39 PMI strongly agree with you Nicola. Your words are so inspiring, they are needed to help motivate me as a focalizer at times when I feel like there isn't quite enouph support to focalize 200-400 person full moon gatherings.
I feel that some people may have been taking advantage of the fact that A.W.L. Gatherings have been donation based in the past with no one being turned away at the door. That plus the fact that they already had to drive way out in the middle of nowhere to get to some of the outdoor ones. At this point we have no choice but to start turning people away if they don't have the donation or if they didn't sign up to be on staff. We can acess things from there and see whether we will be able to do events of this kind anymore. If there isn't enouph support to keep the focalizers ect... motivated enouph to focalize new gatherings in eugene then I can accept that, it won't be easy as I want a true soul family of many people more than anything in my life, but I could accept that. Our scene is very fragile, we all need to nuture it.
I agree that this is one of the last true underground scene's on the west coast. It is all about selfless giving with our precious scene, that is why is it so viben for the most part maybe.

Re: Supporting Our Scene
Wed, May 30, 2007 - 9:00 PMthese gatherings are a very sacred and spiritual place for many of us. it is our church and we are glad to be going to such a psychedelic place. most churches ask for 10% tidings. it is very nice to go to such a nice church that is just asking for a 10 spot or 15$ instead of 10% of our wages. well i hope that everyone can come together on this and we are still in the game a year from now.
lovin all,

Re: Supporting Our Scene
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 3:08 AMI hear you, Luke, regarding having to pay for gas to get to the parties...I know its expensive right now...but with carpooling...4 peeps per vehicle...it works out to what...$3 per person? So for a total of $15 you get to dance under the stars surrounded by gaias beauty, listen to the djs go OFF (cause we love the vibe of playing outdoors so much more, generally, and it shows in the music) and unencumbered by the rules we have to appear to adhere to in "public."
I hope that the community comes together on this, as I hear you about possibly having to accept a shift in the scene, but that would break my heart as the underground music community had a very large influence on my decision to move here. I hope that people know what a rare gem this scene is and pull together to keep it alive.
Namaste ~

Wed, June 6, 2007 - 6:01 PMI agree with you bedouin.
I am going to put some work into consistently getting info out with promotions so people know that they can get into AWL Gatherings in exchange for work for set up and tear down ect...

Thu, October 4, 2007 - 8:04 AMBelated response, but this is WAY true, because this town was so stingy with supporting our community, I just aspire to private & small things.
Its not like we stop throwing them if you dont pay, you just won't know about them! -

Awsome thread !
I love what im finding in the "underground" scene here in eugene.
We all need ot come together and make an environment to for these gatherings to thrive and flourish in positive ways.
As far as helping with events, thats something id like to make a realityi n the future. With set and , take down or what ever. :)
Thank you to all of you that put out so much energy for such a beautiful magic.

Re: Supporting Our Scene
Thu, October 4, 2007 - 10:58 AMGood to see renewed interest in the thread. I have seen this continually happening at various crews parties after posting this. It is such a shame to see people who put so much time, energy, love and money into stellar parties not be supported financially by the community. It seems there is a contingent of people who feel that they, for whatever reasons, have a right to attend the events without supporting financially. Do they realize that due to this a lot of times the parties arent paying for themselves and the deficit is coming out of the promoters personal funds? Do they think that the promoter, after putting all the work, time, and love into creating the event, should pay for them to have a great time? In the nw604 tribe in the Goa Gil thread, there was talk of a group of people who didnt pay to get in, ate an extrordinary amount of community food, and gloated disrespectfully about getting in free. Unfortunately this group was from Eugene and I hated reading that because it reflects poorly on us as a community.
Do we want to see bouncers at the gate ensuring that people dont heckle the gate staff re: money? No. Do we want to see some crews throwing less parties or stopping altogether? No. And speaking to what you said Deke...do we want to see some crews going invite only? No. If Rebirth was invite only this summer, I would not have found out about the parties and these were extremely important gatherings for me to have attended this summer as they opened my eyes to a new genre that has had a very large influence on me. There are others out there who may be ready for a similar awakening who wouldnt have the opportunity and would never know what they were missing.
Music gatherings serve to bring the community together to share a common spiritual experience through dance, celebration, connection, and joy. In times like this that we live in it is sooo important to have this tribal ritual to come back to. Again I state...its a gift not a right.
Of course I want to see as many great parties on the calendar for the next outdoor season, but given how this summer went I wont be surprised if next summer isnt as vibin in Eugene. -

Re: Supporting Our Scene
Thu, October 4, 2007 - 12:50 PMCurious... Speaking as a long-time helper for events in Portland and Eugene:
What's to stop a car full of people from just driving in if we try to turn them away? Most of the locations' driveways are one-way fire roads. I for one would not like being the one to tell a car full of people that they've driven so far to have to go home, but support by the community is needed more than the occasional let-down, for sure. Maybe we need to start have a rope across the road? *sigh*
I didn't experience that group of Eugeners at Gil, but it's sad to hear that people aren't being respectful to the organizers. They need a swift kick in the pants and the sting of the back of me hand! :P
Just some thoughts.
Blessings,
Lyra
