Hello everyone. (from Director of Volunteers, Reema)

I have been asked to be the Director of Volunteers for the LV Intensive 2009. I am looking for enthusiastic, fun loving people who want to take part in one of the biggest and best events Las Vegas has to offer. So many performers come to Las Vegas and witness first-hand the comradery and family like atmosphere at this event and a great part is owed to all the wonderful and generous volunteers we count on each year.

Additionally, volunteers get the added perks of taking some classes or attending the shows for free, and have fun. There are many opportunities to be involved in. We need people to be ushers,to help at the registration tables, and to check people into classes. We also need help running the festival stage, runners for vendors & performers, personal assistants to the teachers, etc. We'd enjoy having some "belly husbands" who want to help move, set up, and tear down equipment as well as dealing with technical aspects of the event. Tribal Fest 2009
For all you ladies and gents who are going Tribal Fest....

My workshops are sold out but I will be performing on Sunday @ 5:23pm so hopefully some of you will come out to play and yell boisterously...
I have yet to make a set though I just got a mastered copy of New Sounds of Vaudeville that I will be using to mix into my set....I better get on that...

I'll also have more T-shirts with me and I've got new colors too: Black, Navy, Brown
And lastly, I'll have some awesome votive candles that Rachel Lazarus-Soto made (fuckin awesome), and cd's!
I'll be chillin at the Solace/Eventide booth over the weekend so come by and yell a huntsman's cry 'Tally Ho!'....or something of the like...

Frederique at Russian Tribal Fest II

Second Tribal Festival took place in Moscow on the 28-29th of March.

This time we had such great guests as Sharon Kihara and Frederique David.
I'm really happy Sharon took my words seriously in Ireland and did agree to come over to teach and dance. It was so cool to work with her translating at the workshops and chat after the party!
Our Tribal Mafia feels very lucky to keep in touch with two wonderful dancers and personalities, who now have our T-shirts, so....Hey you are part of Mafia now !

All four workshops were very interesting, fun, inspiring and refreshing. I was especially happy to see that great professional dancers also are nice, modest, smart people with respectful attitude.

I hope this is a good start and next time we see Sharon at our own Tribal Mafia Fest and show her all the art exhibitions in Moscow and I'm sure Frederique would enjoy some of the beautiful retro places here :)

Boobies...

Hey guys...

Just thought I'd put it out there that I'm getting two lumps removed from my right boob which unfortunately is going to inhibit me from performing at Blood Moon... (I'm so bummed about that...) However you may see me there!

The mammogram doesn't show anything, due to my age and breast density however the ultrasound shows a fibrocystic mass and behind that is a tumor... I'm getting them both removed in late Oct. Hopefully after the biopsy they find the tumor to be benign.... Let's cross our fingers...

Why am I telling you this?
Because Amy Sigil convinced me that I have a duty to all women (and she's right) to remind them of how important it is to check your breasts regularly and let your doctor know if something is wrong or feels (even if it's slight) weird.
Do yourself a favor and check now if it's been a while...who cares of you're at the grocery store...just do it! kidding...

If anyone out there has any questions, please feel free to send me a PM. However it may take a while for me to respond because Tribe only lets me log in only once a week if I'm lucky...

Saturday, October 4 Workshops:

New 'Urban Tribal Style' Moves (Always Evolving): Skill Level 2 :: 12:30-2:30 pm

Want to add to your tribal vocabulary? Learn new moves with the ATS concept of lead and follow developed with non-verbal cues. Frédérique has created new Urban Tribal moves that have been inspired by a variety of ancient and modern dances with fundamental roots in ATS and Cabaret stylized belly dance. Class will begin with elementary yoga / pilates based stretches / exercises, ending with isometric upper body strengthening that will help develop excellent upper body posture for dancing as well as our daily life. Be prepared to focus on strong technique throughout the class. By the end we will all be dancing new tribal moves together, as a tribe. *Prior knowledge in ATS is recommended but not necessary. Frédérique will go over this concept in class.

Gooey Pops: Skill Level 2-3 :: 3:00-5:00 pm

Wanna learn the fundamentals in pop 'n lock? This class will guide and drill you through the fundamentals in applying pop 'n locks to gooey movements and how to combine them in an improvisational performance. These exercises will build muscle memory in order to apply the nuances, details, tempo change and most importantly, control you need for the deed.

Sunday, October 5 Workshop:

Charm Arms: Skill Level 2 :: 10:30 am-12:30 pm

Learn Frédérique's individual and unique approach with arms, upper-body gesticulation, and more importantly, exploration to find your own style. Arms are your opportunity to apply your manner, personality, and expression through dance. Often the focus are on hips and abdominals in your belly dance training. In the workshop, it will be all arms with torso, shoulders, and head subtleties for defined or refined expression, and let's not forget the final frontier in dance expertise...hands, right down to your finger tips. Frédérique has many details to share with you on hand and finger placement with a relaxed feel and look. In this workshop, we will work on obtaining elegance, grace, pose, and polishing your individual style. Strengthening, emotional expression, and drills specifically developed and designed by Frédérique for the this task will be the class focus and content.

NEW 'URBAN TRIBAL STYLE' MOVES
(always evolving)

Want to add to your tribal vocabulary? Learn new moves with the ATS concept of lead and follow developed with non-verbal cues. Frederique has created new Urban Tribal moves that have been inspired by a variety of ancient and modern dances with fundamental roots in ATS and Cabaret stylized belly dance. Class will begin with elementary yoga / palates based stretches / exercises, ending with isometric upper body strengthening that will help develop excellent upper body posture for dancing as well as our daily life. Be prepared to focus on strong technique throughout the class. By the end we will all be dancing new tribal moves together, as a tribe.

*Prior knowledge in ATS is recommended but not necessary.I will go over the concept in class.*

My UNMATA Necklace was stolen in SF! Please help me!

Hi everyone.
On Sunday my car was broken into at Pride. I lost everything. My ipod, camera, new rollybag, my notebook, calendar, clothes, jewelry and...
my UNMATA necklace.
Everything else I can replace over time. But my UNMATA Necklace!!!!!!!
It was taken in San Francisco.
Here's what I'm thinking...This is a powerful piece of jewelry and it may show itself so I can find it. I figure I have a few hundred people on my side in the city that know the necklace or the symbol.
Please keep your eyes open and if you see one, it's mine. Offer to buy the necklace from whoever for whatever it costs and I will reimburse.
Please, I know she is trying to show up somewhere for me.

This is not a festival per se, it's an intensive. Or immersion rather.. where you'll get individualized attention and shared group experience deepening over the course of 3- or 5 days droppin into the dance together! Come immerse yourself in the culture, the music, the bay area bohemian bellydance underworld that is shaping the tribal fusion explosion world wide. Experience where it all began. Learn from some of the pioneers in the field, meet the musicians too, who are shaping the culture and dance! , Dive in, and see how it inspires YOU! In addition to lots of technique and dance training, there are special workshops/lectures on context, history, evolution of tribal fusion bellydance, Core Yoga specifically for dancers, hang out at our local hot spots, workshops on costuming, aesthetic, creating true fusion choreography, and developing your own style, panel discussions on the collaboration between dancers and musicians, with some of your favorite musicians and dancers shaping the art form, lots of performances, and yes, even vending! by some of the bay area's hottest designers...

Remember, on the day that you volunteer 2 hours of your time, ADMISSION IS FREE!!!!

New Beginner Level ATS Class...with Fredeique's Urban / Fusion Twist!

Ladies and Gents!

I've been itching to teach another class and reconnect with my roots; ATS (American Tribal Style) belly dance!
So I've decided to start up an East Bay on-going beginners class on Thursday nights from 7 - 8pm beginning the first Thursday in March!

The short version:
ATS is an improvisational dance form with a system based on nonverbal cues.
This was my first and only formal training in belly dance. I have much love and respect for it and I can never let it go completely though my style has evolved so much that I am no longer true to the format. However, I spent years dedicating and training in ATS since 1997 - 2005; a little more then the later half of that training spent evolving and pioneering into what is my own style now... It is because of ATS and the improvisational factor that I've not ever once choreographed a solo piece and I owe everything I know in belly dance to it.
Though I am not a purist, I still hold ATS in high regard and I am looking forward to sharing my version of it with you...

Tribal Cafe Screening of "Tribal Style: Becoming a Belly Dancer"

Went off without a hitch. Just a hiccup in the beginning when the projector go out of sync, but Laura was there and kept the crowd laughing. I sat next to Rachel Brice, my all around most excellent friend, and we held hands and cried at certain part and hugged at certain parts and laughed. And then realized that there were a lot of other people doing the same things.

Thank you to Clandestine, Beth and Sue, Miss Frederique, (who must learn to control her reactions when she sees her self on screen ;) but I understand, if it weren't for the fact that I was having a heart attack every time I heard a noise thinking that the projector went out I would have been doing the same thing... ps thanks for letting me wear your hat!), and Fat Chance Belly Dance, who got a standing ovation and rocked the house. Thank you for dancing before the show and really giving the screening a sense of occasion.

It was really nice to know that what I captured was truly the essence of our experience and I'm so happy to know now that we really really all share it.

Thank you most of all to the Lazarus & Soto for putting this thing together, hosting it all and Music Supervising the movie. I owe you really more then I can say. Thank you just seems a little unworthy but that's all I got. Thank you Jeremiah and Rachel for making Tribal Cafe a truly amazing experience for me, you ROCK!!!

Frederique David "Urban Tribal Moves" -
Want to add to your tribal vocabulary? Learn new moves with the ATS concept of lead and follow developed with non-verbal cues. Frederique has created new Urban Tribal moves that have been inspired by a variety of ancient and modern dances with fundamental roots in ATS and Cabaret stylized belly dance. Class will begin with elementary yoga / pilates based stretches / exercises, ending with isometric upper body strengthening that will help develop excellent upper body posture for dancing as well as our daily life. Be prepared to focus on strong technique throughout the class. By the end we will all be dancing new tribal moves together, as a tribe. *Prior knowledge in ATS is recommended but not necessary. I will go over the concept in class.
All Levels welcome.

Fred, Hip'n'Bass & Underground SF

So we're launching Hip'n'Bass at Underground SF. Last Thursday of the month. This month, August 30th will feature the lovely Frederique, Freyja, Jennifer Faust & Mitara with SooozhyQ on doumbek and DJs Jimmy Love and Amar.

Fred & I started Hip'n'Bass 2 summers ago at Oasis in Oakland, where we had some kick ass fun summertime sunday shows wth Kush Arora, Clandestine and many other great performers. Now we're kicking it up at one of our favorite bars in the lower Haight, Underground SF.

The other day I was talkin with the folks at Underground SF about starting up Hip'n'Bass, and they asked me "is Frederique going to be dancin?". I'm like "Duh, of course she is". She started Hip'n'Bass with me, she turned me on to Underground SF, and she's been a big inspiration and support to me.

Someone posted a couple of comments on YouTube about my dancing...

Apparently I'm good at Indian Dance!!! Which one out of the TWO MILLION dances in India? Well, that remains to be seen...
I think that's cool seeing I've never taken an 'Indian' dance class before...
Oh, and this may seem a surprise to some of you but... I'm also 'Goth' as well.
I'm gonna have to share this with my home girl who traveled with me to Morocco in 2000, she'll get a little kick out of it... (I do miss Morocco...sigh...)

Heartbeat of the East World Dance Studio is pleased to announce that this year's Northern Migration Tribal/Alt Dance Festival will be held at Asbury Hall at The Church! The Church, located in the heart of downtown Buffalo, New York, was saved from the wrecking ball by the Righteous Babe herself, Ms. Ani DiFranco. We are very pleased to say that the Righteous Babe Foundation will be the corporate sponsor of Northern Migration 2007.

Beautiful cannot begin to describe the space at Asbury Hall at The Church. From its soaring steeple, to its Medina sandstone Gothic Revival facade, to its Booth & Reister stained glass windows, The Church will be an inspiring backdrop to learn from the leading instructors of Tribal belly dance. The venue is perfect for our festival. There are beautiful hardwood floors for dancers' tender feet and there is a state of the art geothermal heating and cooling system. It is an environmentally-friendly approach for providing climate control. Finally, there is a plethora of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shops nearby to enhance your Buffalo experience.

This year, the festival will have an area known as Valizan's Casbah! I Hate Being A Procrastinator.

I came into funds at the last minute to go to "Festival on the Nile" and am positively thrilled to be going. The problem is I waited until the last second to secure a room due to the fact that I thought a friend of mine was going to hook me up but unfortunately that has fallen through. I'm pricing hotels in the area right now so I can avoid sleeping in my car. I mean, it's a friggin' Nissan. Not the coziest of accommodations.

My question is, would anybody be interested in having a roomie and sharing the room cost? My fatal flaws are occasional snoring and a constant overwhelming desire for coffee and chocolate as well as being a bibliophile.

Any response would be appreciated. Even if it's just a casual, "Duh", thrown my way.

KARIM NAGI is a native Egyptian who specializes in traditional Arabic music. He uses his traditional foundation to re-imagine the culture, discovering progressive deliveries and new concepts. Karim performs primarily Arabic, Turkish and Andalusian hand percussion, including the Egyptian Tabla (goblet drum), Riqq (tambourine), Duff (frame drum), and Segat (brass castanets). Karim has authored instructional CDs and DVDs including the first DVD resource on Riqq technique. Karim was a faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music for 5 years. Karim leads the SHARQ Arabic Music Ensemble performing the classical Arabic instrumental and vocal repertoire. Karim travels the country presenting his education program called Arabic Music, Dance and Culture to school grades 2 up through the university level. Karim developed and currently performs Turbo Tabla : a music and dance show that combines traditional Arabic and Turkish music with modern Electronica and Techno. Hala has been dancing to the rhythms and melodies of the Middle East since she was a child in Alexandria, Egypt. She has been praised for her authentic form, elegant style and immaculate rhythms. Captivating audiences with her passion and energy, Hala performs solo and with her troupe.
Hala has been teaching and performing her native dance all over the world since 1997. She currently teaches Middle Eastern dance through the Dance Dept at Stanford University. This is the very first time that Stanford endorses Middle Eastern dance as part of its dance curriculum!

The "Hala Dance Troupe" was selected from over 115 dance companies to represent Middle Eastern dance at the prestigious San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival in 2004. In 2005, she performed with master percussionist Hossam Ramzy in London, England and presented her native art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts In celebration of the King Tut exhibit. Cat fell in love with the thriving Bay Area belly dance scene three years ago shortly after moving to California. Though she grew up studying ballet and modern in Maui, Hawaii, here she discovered a form that she resonated with for its demanding physicality, cultural diversity, and theatrical freedom. She started off studying tribal style belly dance with the fabulous Jill Parker but is currently excited to be getting her certification in cabaret style with Bellydance Superstar Ansuya. She has performed with small groups and is beginning to experiment as a solo performer. Currently she striving to complete a cultural dance related degree.

Ceana is a professional dancer and instructor as well as an Interior Designer. She has studied with local and international belly dance masters. Ceana performs professionally in troupes and as a soloist at restaurants,parties and festivals. She currently teaches in Santa Cruz and San Jose.

Dalila Jasmin has been Bellydancing for about 20 years, with a specialty in Cabaret, Latin Fusion, and sword dancing. My dance training has included Ballet, Afro-Haitian, West African, Hawaiian,Tahitian, Maori, Modern, Jazz, Flamenco, Samba, and Belly Dancing, and lately Bikram Yoga. Dayna and Rana have been dancing together for over 10 years and have instruction in many styles from traditional cabaret to folkloric to tribal. We are currently members of the Kashmir Dance Company in Salt Lake City Utah. While our current troupe is primarily a tribal fusion group, we aspire to be versatile in all forms of the dance. We are very inspired by Ansuya and her grace and passion for the art of bellydance and are very humbled by the opportunity to be involved in the comprehensive and salons.

Jennifer Faust has been dancing all of her life beginning with 18 years of intensive ballet and jazz training. After seeing Ultra Gypsy's first Undulation, she fell in love with the art form of bellydance and began training with Jill Parker. She was then asked to join the Suhaila Dance Company and Bal Anat and was a member of both companies from 2005-2006. She is currently pursuing her solo career and collaborationg with Freyja.

Freyja began her study of dance in early childhood. Her dance background includes ballet, jazz, hip hop, ballroom, salsa, club dancing, flamenco, Indonesian and Indian dance. She has developed her own unique style, drawing from many of these sources. Freyja fell in love with belly dance through her first teacher Ansuya, who inspired her to pursue this dance form whole heartedly. Over the years she has studied with many different teachers and being a life-long student, she continues to study seriously with Frederique and Suhaila Salimpur. She also continues to study with Ansuya whenever the opportunity arises. Freyja has performed all over the United States as well as Canada and Europe. She teaches regular classes in Oakland. Holly Gibson came to dance late in life but with plenty of energy. She began her studies in 2000 with revolutionary bellydancer/director Jill Parker, and joined Parker's esteemed company, Ultra Gypsy, in 2001. Holly was a principal dancer and choreographer in Ultra Gypsy until she left in 2006. She has also studied with Elizabeth Strong, Malia DeFelice, and Ansuya, among others. In her non-dance time she is a producer/editor at Current TV, where she gets to be creative using a completely different medium. She is currently focusing on her solo work as well as spreading her dance wings as a member of the newly-formed Damage Control Dance Company.

Morgan Masri started learning bellydance in 2004 under the direction of Delphina Masri, in Oklahoma City. Having no previous dance training, she was shocked at how well she took to the dance, and in the summer of that same year she became a principle dancer of NatanaSuta Bellydance Company. However the small community in Oklahoma City was not enough for her to really expand her art so in December of 2006, Morgan moved
to Berkeley, Ca. to study with some of the best in the industry. Morganwould describe her interpretation of the dance as pure fusion, finding something she likes in all genres of the dance.

Mina has been a student of dance and the theatre since childhood. Through her classical training and love of the dance, Mina has developed a unique style which combines classical dance styles with a variety of modern theatre styles. Her unique style and grace have charmed audiences throughout Northern California and can be seen performing though out the Bay area and Sacramento as well as from time to time out of the state either solo, or with her dynamic troupe Dalloua Dance Company. Nouveau Nights Photos

Good News: Frederique's been added to the Saturday night line up at Nouveau Nights!

Bad News: As of right now, there are only 5 Saturday-Only tickets remaining for the Nouveau Nights 2007 afterparty. There are still some Friday/Saturday 2-Night Discount tickets available (and Friday-Only tickets), but Saturday-Only will sell out very soon and will not be available at the door.

So! I know that most of the songs Fred uses in her classes she doesn't know the names of, but I was wondering if anyone knows where to find that kind of music? Especially the drum and bass middle eastern-ish ones?? It's really hard for me to find music for some reason. All the ones I manage to download are really cheesy techno songs, and there are the rare 1 or 2 songs that are actually useful that happen to pop up every six months of downloading. . . . If anyone has any ideas, pweaaaase let me know!! I'm going NUTS listening to the same songs, and dancing to the same songs over and over again.
