ok, so i've been off a-wanderin'... making my daily papal bread preaching the gonzo evangelical word of psychedelic art to the masses at the music festivals across the lower 48 and now it is time to begin pondering how i'll blow it all in my annual 'torch a metric fuckton of money to be at burning man" ritual...
many of my friends aren't going this year for various reasons... lame theme.. lame friends... lame gas prices... desire to go elsewhere in the world... desire to stay home and play with running water and electricity...
so i haven't registered a theme or been on any theme related discussions... i have options so i'm not trying to pull the old "brother-can-ya-spare-a-theme-camp-space" trick... just wondering what others amongst the freebootery are thinking of doing by way of location and camping at this year's designer drug desert orgy.
rhino chimed in. anyone else coming to the playa? where ya campin'? registered w/ a theme camp or fending for yourself when you land?

Re: freebooters on the playa
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 10:09 AMThe theme doesn't matter. I only have 1710 miles by my 'great circle route' (there I go again, sounding like I'm flying with Adios Airlines)
I know that grouchosuave, the misbegotten blue-purple shag carpet castoff is planning on attending. I intend to meet him and aid him by providing a couple of chunks of granite for him to turn into lava with his handy-dandy thermal lance. To see the pics is to believe. When I first heard about it, I was skeptical, but then the pics of it. Oh my friggin' gawd on the playa....... I haven't seen thermal effects like that until AFTERWARDS. And that was in a quarry in Oklahoma that had a basaltic dike swarm that only 'cooked' the granite in between the vertical beds of basalt.
I agree with the lame-ass gas prices. I want to find the nearest petroleum price speculator and shove my fist down his throat so he can cough up some of his ill-gotten gains to the rest of us.

who you calling a dike swarm?

Jah. I'm a-goin'. And we are 'Idiot Sidekick Camp." (long story for some other time)
Not workin' the Pyro Crew this year so I got no official schedule, rep or appearance to uphold .... Woot!
Got the time off, got the cash together to blow on compressed oxygen, steel rod and as big of a piece of granite that I can find in Reno and still not squish my truck....
....not to mention the gawddamn cash for the ticket, gas, beer, 12 ga. shells and ergot squeezins....
Why do I do this again?

Re: freebooters on the playa
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 2:05 PMUnfortch, I don't think I'm going this year. One of my bestest homies (my friend who I went with last year, my first year) is having open heart surgery on the 9th in NY. So not only will she most probably not be going, which will make it much less fun for me, but I will probably be flying out to NY to be with her after the surgery. I think I may also put aside the money I would've spent on BM to contribute to her surgery. Her fuckity fuckin fuckhead insurance wants to not cover it . . . .they're on the third appeal . . . . she pays a bazillion dollars to these fuckers monthly . . . yada yada yada.
Anyway, this may be an appropriate time to give my freebooters a heads up that I will probably be doing some fundraising for her and asking folks to make any contribution they can. I've never done anything like this before but homegirl needs help and her mother might be selling her house to help pay for this extremely expensive surgery. so start digging around in your couch cushions!

Re: red marks on my grammar assignment
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 12:06 PMMammoth, I'm also in the 'big-ass Rhino blessings and Rhino healing energy' to be sent to your friend mode. I sincerely and honestly hope things work out for her, and that she is truly healed.
Now, onto the world that is the playa. Groucho, you need to remember, bud, that they aren't sellin' tickets at the gate this year, according to the BM survival guide I just got yesterday.
Remember also, that I'm over at Temple of Community or in Rue Morgue. Also that I'll be splittin' my free time with assholes, too, as well as love junkies, burners without borders, and I still have to try to make my pilgrimage to barbie death camp.
!
Damn, a rhino in demand.......good thing I'm a javan rhino......FIRE UP THE COFFEE POT! -

Re: red marks on my grammar assignment
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 8:00 PMMe in the desert? Not until they dig a series of tunnels and an underground city. Or I attend only at night. My vampiric pale (but I am told, still scrubbable) ass would be screaming "It burns! It burns!" and not in a good way.

Re: underground doc
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 11:34 AMyeah, weather underground had some interesting stuff going on. i definitely recall finding them pretty inspirational when i was younger (in my twenties) and more apt to subscribe to a more reactionary political position. now, in my late-thirties / nearing forty perspective, i see how things like a slogan of "bring the war home" can't really do much to advance the cause of peace.
i still have huge admiration for the psychology behind their motives ie these were a bunch of very well educated predominantly white and / or jewish theorist types who saw how only the poor and black and disenfranchised populations were being really fucked with and, in the wake of freddie hampton's assassination by the chicago police and fbi, they felt the only honorable position to take was to not only stand in solidarity with them, but to also actively target (in a militaristic sense of the term) the financial and political institutions that were responsible for the agendas that put the nation at war (for the profit of the few) and kept institutionalized racism at the seething infected heart of it all...
sheesh... sucky thing is, no matter how much i can find faults with some of the weather underground methodology, i can't actually see how any other methodologies have done much to curb the wealthy and powerful minority from continuing to advance militarism to exploit the public sector (tax payers) to fatten the wallets of the private sector (military contractors)... if anything, that trend has gotten much, much, much, much worse under cheney and his whole cadre of "privatize everything and let the public foot the bill" disaster capitalists...
