Here are some "job titles" and labels that would be awesome to have at this year's camp.
Everyone should plan on contributing to the community experience on the playa, and taking on one or more of these roles would be a FUN and excellent way to do that.
Peruse the list ... If something grabs you, let us know! Let us know whether you want to lead that, or just be a part of it. If you want to more about what it means or what it would entail, also speak up!
This list does make some assumptions based on what we had at camp last year, but that's just it: If no one steps up to create it this year, we're not going to have it. Looks for what you're passionate about having!
* Civic planning
* Leave No Trace
* Transportation coordinator
* Construction
* Deconstruction
* Pre-burn Reno coordinator
* Post-burn Reno coordinator
* Truck driver
* Event coordinator
* Membership
* Clearing calls
* Storage coordination
* Kitchen set-up crew
* Kitchen cleanup crew (we might all be enlisted in this, if we have a kitchen)
* On-playa communications
* Health & wellness
* Vibe checker
* Dome angels
* Lost & Found coordinator
* Dome coordinator
* Virgin Wrangling
* FUNdraising
* Treasurer
Some of these jobs are more involved than others, but some are just a few hours of work that would mean so much to your community for you to take it on!
What do you think?!
== You can change the name of any of these to suit your needs. :)

Re: Even work can be EASY and FUN!
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 11:42 AMthis is something that just occurred to me out of seeing your list of jobs and a convo I had with scott here at mission control. one of the things they talk about in their book is how the quality of people's experiences in events (like fc at bm) are directly related to how they play and that one of the ways to get people to play is to have clearly defined roles for themselves.
what if, this year, EVERYONE had a job title in the camp?
This could radically transform how the camp shows up.
Everyone would know how they fit into the larger picture and could participate more fully because of it.
The people who don't know how to help will have a role. The people who overdo it will know where their job ends. I think it's a win-win.
We tell people, we're radically inclusive (As always), and this is our game... everyone is a leader, everyone has a role, everyone has something to contribute. But this year, we actually have everyone articulate it, and we help them! In order to camp with FCC, you must have a role. Kitchen cleaner, sign builder, construction worker, etc. On the leader board, EVERYONE gets listed with their role, so if I have a question about the kitchen, I can ask ANY of the kitchen crew. People can make up their roles, or just take one of the ones we've listed. Everyone gets a job title (fanciful or otherwise) Etc, etc.
It seems to fit in with FUN and COMMUNITY-ORIENTED. And makes it clear that everyone is participating. What do you think?
I'm not even sure if I'm going, but if I do, I want to be a LNT-wrangler. (See? you don't even have to have a commitment to go to commit to a role.)

Re: Even work can be EASY and FUN!
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 11:02 AMI REALLY like the idea of everyone having a role that is agreed upon before the Burn. There were plenty of times last year during set up at the burn where i felt aimless and didn't know where i was needed. In the crazy heat and intensity that is the plyah, there's no reason why anyone should be expending energy trying to figure out what they can do to help.
To make my own personal statement towards contributing to the burn, I am leaning towards doing FUN-draiser stuff and putting on a free form-show like i said in the introduce yourself post. The only hesitation i feel towards fully committing to an fundraising event is not knowing whether i'll have a partner in crime. I'm asking for someone to take this on with me--Any takers?

Mon, April 14, 2008 - 1:48 PMI love the idea of everyone having a role. May I sign up as an event coordinator? Although it is my first trip to BM I have a professional history of event planning in my day to day life so, Caryn can you and I chat more about this?
Thanks Love! -

Re: Even work can be EASY and FUN!
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:36 AMFANTASTIC NEWS!
We have truck drivers!!
Our big loves across the Atlantic -- Samantha, Tiago, and Tracey -- have stepped up to drive our truck!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU! It's a big job, and we all reaaaaaaaaally appreciate it!
They are looking to head to the burn from Las Vegas, as opposed to California.
We are still looking for someone to connect with KJ and make some phone calls to reserve a truck for us. Does anyone have the bandwidth to make these phone calls on our behalf? -

Re: Even work can be EASY and FUN!
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 10:47 PMYeah, I need a job. Caryn, let's talk more about this.
I like being some kind of Welcomer/Greeter/"How can I help?" kinda role but as I am brand new and don't even know which direction the sun comes up, someone will have to welcome me and greet me first :)
You and me have a nice drive from Vegas to Reno...you can fill me in then, if need be!
I would also like to help with coordinating hotel/motel needs in Reno. I seem to have a knack at getting great views for great deals! -

Re: Even work can be EASY and FUN!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 8:05 AMI totally love the idea of camp roles ahead of time. and even further break down of the descriptions of what we need. How many people would need to be 'virgin wrangler' and what does a virgin wrangler do? What is involved in coordinating trucks or whatnot? What do we need for dome decor/installation and how many people? does dome decor mean creating decor or just making sure to decorate it? I think the more specific we can get on number of people we need (approx), time it takes (do we need to do 'shifts'?), and what it entails - the better. That being said I appreciate its Burning Man and not everything is an exact science. -

roles and categories - lets make it totally accessible!!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 8:16 AM
Also another neat way to break things down for those of us who want to get a visual:
(i figure marah already has all of this in her head - but if we all see it i see it would help alot!)
we can break it down by categories:
Pre-Burn planning - light jobs - (coordination, extra) Needs someone with x skills (x = whatever is needed for job)
Pre Burn planning - heavy commitment jobs - needs someone with x skills
Reno work - workhorse jobs
Camp Burn set up - early days - workhorse jobs - (decor, setup)
During Burn Camp involvment - workhorse jobs - trash, etc
during burn camp involvment - cheerleaders - vibe checker, etc (level of commitment/responsiblity)
during burn camp involvment - workshop leaders - light commitment but pls show up.
post burn commitment - coordination - heavy commitment
post burn commitment - workhorses
Okay this isnt a perfect categorization but you can see what I mean...
You can list it by heavy commitment to preplan, heavy commitment to lead, light commitment to creating a one time thing (like events) or being a workhorse. See how exacty and visual you can get it so people can really get access to like 'hey yeah, i wanna be a workhorse or hey yeah, i wanna be a preplanner, or a leader'. and then if we want to further stream it, how can we even list the benefits of each. heavy commitment includes these benefits (leading, organizing, feeling x). light commitment includes these benefits (more play time, bonding time. etc).
So we want everyone to come in and play. and we want them to find their role most easily. how can we make it so easy and appealing for everyone to identify themselves that we can easily plug them all in and they will know exactly why they are volunteering for x.
let me know what you all think.....
