Got some change to spare for Camp Beaverton? (BM camp for queer and queer friendly women)

Camp Beaverton (Burning Man's official queer camp for women) is alive and well and gearing up for their 1st year as a stand alone camp. (We were with FC the last two years).

We'd love help from the whole community to make this year especially awesome!

With dues so far we have reached our goal for infrastructure (dome, truck rental, storage, shower and kitchen) but we also want to be prepared for the hundreds of women who plan to visit the camp and participate in our events, workshops and play parties. We still need to raise a few hundred dollars to cover safe sex supplies, batteries for our fun toys and alcohol for our social parties, plus the supplies to make sure we're visible on the playa (flags and lighting at night).

We're asking for donations towards our cause to ensure being fully prepared to WELCOME QUEER WOMYN TO THE PLAYA AND ROCK THEIR WORLDS!!!!

1) personal pledge of commitment.
pick a title/role for your time on the playa/off the playa and describe it. remember, the burn starts the moment you commit to it. if your title / role is quiet glitterguy or groovy nekkid playa bunny, that is fine, great, terrific.

the point of this is to think about it and talk about the gift that is you, the gift you are bringing to the burn. you must write a description, think of this as part of the application process. woody allen says that 80% of success is showing up. this is not a graded essay. think of it as pass/fail. if you write one, you pass. since the theme of burning man this year is evolution, you may want to think about how you have evolved since your last burn.

in addition to any new roles and commitments you are taking on in the above essay, to camp with FC you also need to commit to a team that supports the camp

they are:

-set up & early arrival, includes dealing with a truck and storage off playa, greeting people as they arrive, etc (this requires early commitment in reno, and the ability to rent/drive a truck)

-daily deputy mayors, representing FC on playa at the homestead

-wellness and communications pirates - a safe place for communications...

-public space advocates and angels, keeping our shade structure an inviting public space, includes event scheduling, if any....

-water nymphs, includes creating showers, grey water, evap pond and disposal

-clean up, break down, return to storage, and final LNT on playa, and cleaning out the truck. requires a Tuesday stay in Reno. you will be given a 20$ meal stipend.

There are 6 teams. each team requires a minimum of 7 people, and a max of 10. this team structure supports the estimated theme camp attendance of 40-60 people.

you will notice that there is no kitchen this year. the kitchen is a labor and monetary intensive endeavor, requiring at least 3 people per day (monday - saturday) to keep it running smoothly, plus a kitchen goddess. Cass was an amazing kitchen goddess last year. if there are 20+ people interested in keeping the kitchen, then we'll see.

so, when submit your personal commitment and team commitment, please also indicate if you are interested in supporting the kitchen, and how.

2) a monetary commitment of 100 USD via fundable :

The fee is higher than in the past. The camp costs approx 4400 smackeroos. This includes *truck rental +gas+cleaning ~ 2000
*storage for a year ~1500
*etc fund ~500 (key lockouts, food for the load out crew, emergencies, next year's fund)
*fundable and paypal service charges. 400 - if we don't meet our goal of 4400 by july 15, fundable will send it all back.

if we receive a green rating of Leave No Trace from burning man, then 50$ will be returned to each camper by December.

by paying into the camp, you are personally and team committing as described above, as well as committing to the following LNT pledge:

*If you make a mess on the playa, do not cover it up. Ask for help resolving it.

*Each participant in FC camp is asked to pack out at least one extra bag of MOOP that did not originate from you. Is this something you can agree to?

*Each participant gets to choose how they will fulfill this commitment and express the LNT values of Black Rock City. LNT is a cornerstone of Burning Man, and we encourage you to choose a commitment that works for your style on the playa.

Some examples:

*Carry a small grocery bag around daily and attempt to fill it.
*Picking up for 15-20 minutes daily after waking up.
*Organize a recycling program.

Come out to the White Horse Tavern tomorrow night to share some drinks and good vibes with me and Reid. We're leaving LA for a bit of travel before embarking on our San Fran adventure. And joining us in LA is the inimitable Jen Howd who has arrived here today from NYC.
She'll be staying in my Hollywood place for the month before heading west to Santa Monica.

Pinchbeck writes a column, Prophet Motive, for Whole Life Times. I am aware i Declared it and Only know being back in London and realizing I will not be coming to the burn next year, due to my yoga course, It's a lot more than i had thought. TNF this Thursday in LA

Come join us for TNF this week. Help celebrate Jay’s new position as head of Black Sheep Entertainment. Woo hoo! Also, our good friend John Cady is leaving town for a year and if he catches up on his packing he might stop by to say hello… and goodbye :( at least for a while. Either way, we’ll be here so come on by. Bring a towel if you want to soak in the hot tub. Any time after 9:30 is fine.

You’ve seen most of this before, but here’s the lowdown…

Arrive any time after 9:30pm. Please bring anything you want to eat or drink for yourself or to share, but there is no obligation to bring anything except your lovely self. Please remember that if you are outside after 10 pm, keep to whispers and if you're inside, just keep your voices low.

If you don't have the address, email or tribe me or get it from some one who does.

OK to call late if you want to check in with us before you pop by.

IMPORTANT - The entrance to our space is down the stairs to the left of the garage. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THE FRONT DOOR of the house as that is the entrance to our landlord's living space. Our space is downstairs in the back. Please remove your shoes before entering.

PARKING - Please follow these instructions. The best place to park is on Benedict Canyon near the intersection of Weslin. Please do not park on Weslin across from our house. Those spaces are needed for our landlord and neighbors. This is a very safe neighborhood, so even if you are alone and have to walk a block or so, you'll be fine. If anyone does want an escort for some reason, call the house phone and we'll come get you.

SMOKING - You may smoke outside on our patio, but please be especially careful as we are in the canyon and there is lots of flammable brush in the area. Deposit cigarette butts in the designated containers only. No flicking of ashes on the ground, please. KEEP YOUR VOICES DOWN AFTER 10 PM

Thanks again for all of your participation in the FC kitchen this year. I think it was a great success and I look forward to improving the facility even more next year!

A personal note:
Because this is FC I'm gonna call myself out here on something - I think I did a good job of stewardship and I'm proud to have been of service. Thank you for all of your compliments, too. The thing I'm callin' myself out on is that I kind of needed that - I needed to be needed in order to feel ok. There were times that I chose to work when I didn't strictly need to, because I didn't quite know what to do with all my feelings. Thank you to those who recognized that and had patience. Thanks also to those who called me on it. I hope to show up next year with a lot more willingness to go out and embrace a freer, fuller experience of BM. I also hope to enlist a few more "kitchenatrixes" so that we can further distribute the workload :)

I'm gonna give you some of my feedback here:

- I thought communal Dinners worked great except we could have cooked more food. We knew we'd have about 100 in the camp and planned to feed about 60, counting on a 40% attrition rate. Turns out many more of us were hanging around the camp than any of us thought. Which was fabulous, but we were a bit short on food. I think next year we should plan on cooking for 75 - 80% of the people who are camping with FC.

- Oh, and we needed a dinner gong or an air horn or something - many people missed our meal calls!

- I thought the breakfasts worked well in the way we managed them. Except for umm, tuesday or wednesdays couscous *yum* we bought food communally and had the cooks prepare whatever was available. We did really well under the circumstances, and I am deeply grateful to all who bought food and cooked!

- Next year, I'd love to have a volunteer on board who is experienced with food buying/planning. I'd like that person to take on A) Planning breakfast meals and b) buying the breakfast food or organizing the buyers, citing SPECIFIC amounts to buy and c) organizing dinner cooks and bulk buying where possible.
Bonus points for figuring out how many veggies and vegans there are among us! If you're interested, let me know. I'll remind you next year ;)

- we needed to have a couple of kitchen orientations, so people know how to use the sinks and grills, and the garbage, and where to put things away.

- I think the job that I did could be broken up into three jobs - one food coordinator, and at least two Stewards - people who know where stuff goes and how to do the cleanup. I found myself doing a little more hands-on management than I was planning on doing (not really surprised about that! see above!) Again, if you're moved to create the Kitchen Awesomeness with me next year, message me.

Here are some comments we received in the comment book, feel free to add your own, I'll compile and keep a reference for next year's planning.

- Cooks please have a set time for dinner and breakfast (breakfast btw 9-10, dinner in the hour before sundown?)

- Kitchen volunteer meeting (orientation) Tues AM

- better garbage management incl (compost for burning)
CK note: we need to decide as a group if we can handle this for the whole community or if we can only manage this for communal meals. As it stands, people are using kitchen garbage (and water) and that's cool... if we have the volunteers at the end of the burn to manage it all. One solution is to simply shut down the garbages in between communal meals, and anyone using the kitchen for personal cooking can just pack out their garbage and water. Another is to manage it like the Evap pond, and have a communal garbage approach, but that's gonna take some volunteers!

- We needed someone on Coffee Duty for the AM shifts!
CK: John and I had a good idea - an outside table for morning coffee / tea making and service. The Barista Bar.

- Limit fried food for community meals.

- More vegan meals

- Dishes: Boil the cooler water if we're repurposing it for dishes, it can carry bacteria
- Also, bleach in the rinse water was suggested

- Prescot College has a part of their web site that does portion calculations that might be a good guideline for when people are buying food since buying food can be hard to calculate for so many people

- Cooler duty: The ice position was effectively expanded to include emptying the cooler water, repacking coolers with ice, and doing a sort-out and clean up of the food

- Grey water - we did well this year on the jugs - wow did we ever recycle a lot of plastic 2 gallon spout-jugs! Next year, think about bringing reusable containers, y'all! We could have also been collecting screw-top grey water containers throughout the week, and recycling unusable ones, that would have lessened the workload on the Sunday Cleanup crew.

- The kitchen should have been physically closed on Saturday afternoon - barricaded, or zip-tied closed. The additional clean-up for people who had used the kitchen after it was closed added one or two hours to our Sunday cleanup. Thanks to all of those people who came forward to do that work!

I have a couple more non-kitchen related items which I'll post under a different heading.

And now... your feedback? Any more to give us for reference next year? FYI I'm going to keep a separate tally of these here (http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ddcx3gz2_4dp7c2mdn) for reference next year in case Tribe goes kaput for good!

Okay how in the world do I break in to this community? This was my first burn and I sought out FC at BM and met a handful of you great people. Thank you! I really want to be involved with this group next year but I am having a hard time meeting more people as I don't think I made a good enough first impression with people since I'm quite shy. I feel this is a community that I could embrace with open arms and learn a great deal from (and am excited about!) but I'm feeling a little excluded when I request friendships with people I've, granted, only met once. But isn't that how community starts? One at a time? I want to know you people... knock...knock.

(this will be an advanced course--movers and shakers, big thinkers, and visionaries welcome. you don't need to be an old school fc player (or even be a declared member of freedomcommunity at all) to get something extraordinary out of this gathering, but this is NOT intended as an introduction to freedomcommunity. it's an assembly of conscious creators ready to hear sexy new ideas and dig in, all held under the banner of freedomcommunity. presentations will be made. discourse will be juicy. and we'll all be building upon the big questions of "what's next?" and "how do we want to get there?" together. formal description pending. the team putting this one together is totally, totally boss.)

DEMONS is an invitation to explore the forces to which we surrender our power, our motivations for doing so, and the possibility of living without them. every aspect of this event is intended to challenge you to examine your life, your limits, your word, and answer for yourself: who would you be if you could say, explore, experience anything? who would you be if fear was no longer a deciding factor in the creation of your boundaries?

Arrive any time after 9:30pm. Please bring anything you want to eat or drink for yourself or to share, but there is no obligation to bring anything except your lovely self. Please remember that if you are outside after 10 pm, keep to whispers and if you're inside, just keep your voices low.

IMPORTANT - The entrance to our space is down the stairs to the left of the garage. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THE FRONT DOOR of the house as that is the entrance to our landlord's living space. Our space is downstairs in the back. Please remove your shoes before entering.

PARKING - Please follow these instructions. The best place to park is on Benedict Canyon near the intersection of Weslin. Please do not park on Weslin across from our house. Those spaces are needed for our landlord and neighbors. This is a very safe neighborhood, so even if you are alone and have to walk a block or so, you'll be fine. If anyone does want an escort for some reason, call the house phone and we'll come get you.

SMOKING - You may smoke outside on our patio, but please be especially careful as we are in the canyon and there is lots of flammable brush in the area. Deposit cigarette butts in the designated containers only. No flicking of ashes on the ground, please. KEEP YOUR VOICES DOWN AFTER 10 PM

The CandleOpera

This is an invitation to all of FC to participate in a community Prayer-formance on Wednesday evening of BurningMan week.
We are creating The CandleOpera at BurningMan.
Music, Dance, poetry, culinary delights, nurturing, healing, fire and honoring space with ritual, art and design are all a part of this community activation event.
It is my vision to have all of our community participating in this event… sharing with the playa and one another. Singer-songwriters, DJs, composers, rappers, dancers, actors, poets, chefs, healers, priests, porn stars and everyone else is welcomed to play in the space and to dance and move authentically as Spirit guides you.

I am interested in seeing and feeling how your expression will meld into the BurningMan theme of “The American Dream” in a five rhythms wave form (like Gabrielle Roth but in a theatrical model), forming The CandleOpera.
Creating The CandleOpera in a 5 rhythms wave is new and I am excited to hear your ideas and suggestions.

Please let me know if you are a musician (instrumentalist or singer) interested in creating some original, composed and/or improvised music for the evening.

Questions about the time and space… the time for the event is 5:30pm…It seems too early to me….I would love to swap times with the Wednesday evening Beaverton event if it feels good and is not too late.
I think it would be nice to create it outside as we have before. Are there plans to have a stage this year or an outdoor venue that seems perfect?
Are there plans to have a P.A./sound system? Does anyone have access to a system suitable and durable enough for BM?

I think it would be very nice to move into the dome afterwards for food, continued music and comfort. Is the dome being used for a specific event Wednesday evening? I have been toying with the idea of doing The CandleOpera in the dome…real intimate…kind of limits the fire dancing…Thoughts and ideas? Please share as this event is created through conversations and collaborations.

Need a microphone for the dome stereo

OK, first a question. One of the folks on one of the conference calls (west coast I think) said she had a decently beefy stereo that she could bring to be used in the dome. A) Is that still the case? B) Remind me again who is brining the stereo, please. and C) Does it have a microphone input, and if so what type?

Note that most systems will have a microphone input, and on a consumer stereo, it's probably a 1/4 stereo input (like the old school headphone jacks or the jacks on big studio can headphones), or an 1/8 stereo input (the normal size for portable headphones, ipods, etc these days). If it's more sophisticated, it might have a 3-pronged XLR input.

OK, with that in mind, does anyone have a microphone that could be used as needed in the dome? The thought is if people are doing poetry readings or music performances, ambient noise might necessitate a bit of amplification.

For those that want to know a little more....

The History of Sake Sundown started before I ever came to Burning Man in the ancient year of 1998. From what I can piece together It all started with two newcomers to the festival (Rick and Mimi) a lone bottle of Sake and a wild BM dust storm. What I’m told is these newcomers were innocently on their way to a designated event when a crazy dust storm stopped them in their tracks and they were forced to take shelter in a nearby Tee-Pee with some friendly looking folks (Sam Levine, Ralph, Will, Carl, Dan Stauffer, John Averil). What actually happened in that Tee-Pee only the empty Sake bottle will know, however I can tell you that an entire BM village called Woonami Village (Naomilly called The Cosmic Woo Woo Field, then Woo Woo Field in the olden days) was born because of it.

Woo Woo fields was where I was invited to camp in 2000 (the crazy year of rain and cement-mud). One Thursday evening during the event, some friends & I (Matt, Tanya, Naomi, Ning Nong and some others) decided to dress up and feed people Sake… Woooaahhh Nellie… what a fun evening – the concept was simple – have fun, connect with someone you may not of before and get fed Sake by sexy Sake delivery people. Years since Sake Sundown has mutated, moved and transformed to look different ways – but always with the intention of connection, fun and having Sake fed to you.

Newbie Question: what time should I arrive at BM?

Hi all,

Newbie here. When should I arrive in BM? I plan to leave Menlo Park around 8pm after work on Wed after picking up my share-ride in SF so I would arrive on Thu at say 3am? But I heard that it is impossible to find theme camps from entrance during the night. Also, I may need to pick up a bike in Reno on the way, so should I leave like 3am in the morning, get to Reno about 8 or 9am, pick up bike, then drive to BM and arrive at 10 or 11am? Or should I get a freaking bike in Bay Area? Bottom line: when should I arrive at the gate? Let me know. Thanks!

Protecting instruments at Burning Man

Question for anyone who knows what the deal is with protecting instruments from the dust or other harsh elements while on the playa. I'm planning to bring my saxophones and hopefully playing indoors in places like the dome and such should be OK, but otherwise should I be concerned about the alkalie destroying them? I'm also thinking about fashioning a sheet into a cover with holes for my hands to leave around the sax while I'm playing it, but I'm not sure if that is needed. Anyone with knowledge here, please help out. I think there's at least 1 trumpet player in FC.

Breakfast about $50 each so that equals about $300 - will divide and distribute among the Shoppers.
A Note from Marah: I can pay out via check on the Playa or Via Paypal after 8 September, either way with a receipt. I would prefer paypal afterwards so that people won't loose the checks. Last year i distributed envelopes to everyone pre-playa and they put their receipts in them, and either handed them to me or sent them to me afterward. Thanks Marah!

I'm Cass King, from Vancouver. I'm a Virgin Burner and I'm stepping in as the FC Kitchen Dooties Coordinator.
The Kitchenatrix, if you swing that way. I'm volunteering to:
a) Gather and share information about PERSONNEL: who wants to do what dooties re: cookin' and cleanin the kitchen.
b) set up some SYSTEMS to address use and cleanup of the kitchen.
c) figure out roughly what we have to work with in terms of kitchen utensils and other amenities
d) start a drive to get people to bring stuff that we need and don't want to buy.

Just to be clear, I'm volunteering to make sure all the positions are filled daily and the kitchen is set up well. I'm not volunteering to cook or clean a damned thing. But I might throw down, for fun :)

Q: What's up with the kitchen? Can anyone use it?
A: Yes, any FC camper can use the kitchen, as long as cooking communal meals takes priority.
Here are some other common-sense rules about the kitchen use:
- Leave no trace - clean up every spill, and pack out your food when you're done.
- Food storage in the kitchen is for communal food only, we don't have room for everyone's coolers.
- Please donate to the community snacks table BUT make sure your donation is in a spill-proof container. No dumping!
- bring your own plates and cups and cutlery for meals - and take them when you're done.
- Kitchen and Community Snack Bar closes at midnight on Saturday. No dumping!
- Cooks and kitchen volunteers must receive either a) a hearty round of applause or b) a spanking (their choice)

Q: Is there a meal plan? What's for breakfast? What's for dinner? I'm hungry.

A: The meals will work differently this year, as Patrick is no longer the camp chef. He's not camping with FC but he'll still be around for fun! yay.

FYI It looks like a lot of jobs but it's all broken down into little chunks so that the brunt of the work doesn't fall onto one or two people. The General job descriptions are:

Q: OK, so I'm game for cooking, how would that work?

5. INTRODUCING: THE SNACK ZONE

Hey, all. I am the Snack Czar of FC this year. There will be a communal snack table in the food area available for your 24-hour-a-day munchie satisfaction; with your help, we will have the finest nibbles in all of Black Rock City! There are just a few guidelines that will make it better for everyone:

1. IF YOU WANT TO SNACK, BRING SNACK FOOD. I'm requesting that everyone who wants to take advantage of the Snack Zone bring at least one delicious item to stock it with. This is a potluck deal; everything on the table will come from YOU and your campmates. But what kinds of items, you ask? Well...

2. THE ONLY SNACKS PERMITTED ON THE COMMUNAL TABLE ARE NON-PERISHABLE, SEALABLE, NON-MOOPY, AND READY TO EAT. The idea is that if the temperature zooms up, they shouldn't spoil, and if a huge gust of wind or crazed raver comes and knocks everything over, it should not create a MOOP situation. Big plastic jar of salted cashews: good. Non-resealable bag of Cracker Jack, spilling all over the place: not good. Resealable bag of dried mango: good. Flat of fresh strawberries: not good. Case of cans of Red Bull: good. Big pinch-open carton of orange juice: not good. Large Ziploc bag of home-baked cookies: good. Open tray of sticky frosted cupcakes: not good. Box of energy bars: good. Box of pancake mix: not good. You get the idea. Non-permitted snacks are often very tasty, and if you want to offer them around, go for it, but then they go back in your tent, not the communal table.

Other things that have been particularly popular in past years: Pringles (God's perfect food), Pop-Tarts, pickled asparagus, sealable containers of cookies, crackers, vegetarian jerky, dried fruit, freeze-dried ice cream... you get the idea. Got a favorite snack food you want to introduce to other FC'ers? If it meets the criteria, bring it on! Impress us!

3. DON'T STEP OVER THE TRASH. Don't feel compelled to leave one last little bit for someone else. Finish it--but then make sure that the packaging is properly discarded or recycled. Re-seal every container you open. You spill it, you clean it up. Your mother is not in the desert, and if she were, you probably wouldn't be happy about it. Leave the communal table neater than you found it.

Emotional Survival Guide

There used to be some site that had a "Burning Man Emotional Survival Guide," but it doesn't seem to be up now. So, since this will be my tenth consecutive Burning Man (!!), here are a few of my personal tips for being happy under harsh desert conditions, some of which I have learned the hard way.

I. THE LIMITS OF RADICAL SELF-RELIANCE

Yes, the phrase "radical self-reliance" gets thrown around a lot, and it's a good one. But it has one hard limit: when your judgment is impaired, you may not be capable of being self-reliant. The single biggest cause of impaired judgment on the playa is dehydration--and the funny thing about dehydration is that other people can notice you're dehydrated long before YOU can.

This means: when somebody tells you to drink water, shut up and drink some water. Then drink some more water. Don't say "I don't need to," don't say "I just drank some water," don't say "I'm so full up on water I'm about to burst." Shut up and drink some water. Then drink some more water. Then say "thank you."

This goes double for when you're working on something and somebody tells you you look wiped out and should go sit down for a little while. Don't say "I just have to finish this." Don't say "no, I'm okay, thanks." Shut up and do what they tell you to do, right then. And drink some water.

II. BAD MOOD CHECKLIST

Sooner or later, everybody at Burning Man will find themselves in a bad mood, or getting really upset about something that might not bother them at another time. I recommend memorizing the following four steps, and running through them before you either silently stew in your own juices or snap at somebody else.

1. Are you totally hydrated? No, you're not. So drink some water. If the bad feeling doesn't go away:

2. Have you eaten lately? Probably not. Eat a little snack--a power bar or some salted nuts. Your blood sugar will thank you. If the bad feeling is still there:

3. Look around you. You are in the most beautiful city in the world. Just let yourself take in the spectacle for a minute. If the bad feeling persists:

4. Do something really nice for somebody else. The dirty little secret of altruism is that it makes the altruist feel REALLY GOOD. Find a cute stranger, compliment them, and give them a present. Wander into a chill space and ask who wants a foot rub. This takes some effort, but almost always helps with bad feelings.

One other question that doesn't always apply: have you gotten enough sleep? It's very easy not to sleep enough on the playa; the number one cause of people not sleeping out there is that they're afraid they might miss something. News flash: you _will_ miss stuff one way or another, but there's more stuff going on than you'll ever be able to experience, and you'll be much happier if you're fully present for the stuff you're awake for.

III. ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT

One other aspect of "radical self-reliance": you don't have to take care of your every need, you just have to not count on others to automatically provide everything you want for you. This means that if you need something--an object, an action, anything--you need to ask for it. This totally works--and politely asking strangers for/about things is much more acceptable at Burning Man than in the outside world, and often results in making new friends. (Sometime I can tell you the story of how one time at Burning Man, a few years ago, my Polaroid camera had broken and I really needed a new one... and the first person I asked, out in the deep playa, _just happened to have a spare Polaroid camera on his person_. And a popsicle. That cheered me up in a hurry, let me tell you.)

The same principle goes for emotional things, too. If you want somebody to bike around the deep playa with, ask. If you want physical contact, ask. If there's a group that's about to go dancing and you want to go with them, ask.

Hi, Freedom lovers!

Here's a sign-up sheet for the kitchen dooties.
We're going to have a clean, classy kitchen this year!

It looks like a lot of jobs but they are broken down into little chunks so that the brunt of the work doesn't fall on one person or group.
If everyone is truly committing to five hours of FC community service on the playa, covering all the positions on this list will be a SNAP!
And hey, if you want to add something (like managing a communal offerings food table for example) and you're willing to do the job? GO FOR IT!

LIBATIONS: friday night community concert at the burn

so as you all have probably seen, there's a spot on the freedomcommunity calendar on friday night for a "community concert". well, you're part of the community and we're looking for our performers! here's some more info about the event.

LIBATIONS:
come celebrate the community we have all (re)created together this year at the burn, and dedicate yourself as an offering in honor of who we are, where we've been, and the beauty that is to come. libations is a space to celebrate and offer all that each of us brings--the gifts we're familiar with, and those that will surprise and elate us. it is an opportunity to revel in both what you've discovered and what you dream of next. it's a chance to see your community (and yourself) creating something stunning, exciting, and exceptional together. and as we come closer to the climax of the burn, it's a moment to recognize all that we've built together, and begin to taste what we're becoming on our journey in the desert.

HOW IT'S GONNA WORK:
we'll be using the main dome. libations will be part open mic, part variety show, and 100% rock solid kickass good time. performers from all over our community are welcome to offer themselves up to the audience in whatever modes feel right in the moment--dance, song, spoken word, etc.

share a known talent (ahem....musical saw...beatboxing...vocals). share a gift we never (or rarely) see. share your honest blessings. and be ready to receive it all as an audience. if i know what we can come up with (and i kind of think i do), we'd better all be ready for our hearts to stretch bigger and wider than the normal human chest can hold.

if you are at all interested in helping run the financial side of things this year, I could use a hand with some spreadsheet goodness.

it's easy but tedious, needs to get done, and would help me out a lot.

Kitchen use - PLEASE contribute yr thoughts!

Caryn and I are working on an all-kitchen newsletter for this week and I've realized that I have no idea what agreements are in place regarding kitchen use. I've never been to Burning Man, and I don't know what's actually in the kitchen so - I'm guessing here.
Please help by commenting with your ideas and requirements for a classy and useful kitchen. :)

Here's what I think the agreements should be:

- Leave no trace - clean up every spill, and pack out your food when you're done.
- Any FC camper can use the kitchen, as long as cooking communal meals takes priority
- Food storage in the kitchen is for communal food only, we don't have room for everyone's coolers.
- Please donate to the community snacks table BUT make sure your donation is in a spill-proof container.
- bring your own plates and cups and cutlery for meals - and take them when you're done.
- Kitchen closes at midnight on Saturday.
- Cooks and kitchen volunteers must receive either a) a hearty round of applause or b) a spanking (their choice)

community food plans

due to the freedomcommunity daily rituals of last burn, i was under the impression that freedomcommunity included one meal a day in the camp fee, with a few people offering to cook that meal for the whole camp as part of their camp dooties. i learned last night that this was only circumstantial, with patrick n friends voluntarily cooking for the whole camp every morning out of his/their sheer awesomeness. since my diet at the burn most often consists of trail mix, dried fruit and beef jerky, this was one of my favorite perks of camp last year...the fact that i could drag myself out of bed every morning and stand around chatting and drinking coffee with other early-risers and then eat food lovingly prepared, fueling myself properly for a day of play. i was wondering if we could organize for a similar experience this year.
it would be easy...oh so easy...to insure this if everyone (aren't there about a hundred of us?) agreed to bring one pound of bacon, or a pound of coffee, or some pancake mix, or a box of soy milk, or a bag of scrambled eggs, etc, to donate to the kitchen. "cook" could be added to the list of dooties, and a person (or two people) would meet their 5 hour requirement in 2 days, and then switch.
any thoughts on or support for making this happen?

I have two large clear bins and three medium clear plastic stacking drawers, as well as a Wal Mart cot that I'm not going to hang onto for another year in case I go to next year's Burn. I'll hang onto my real valuable camping stuff, but not this stuff.

Transport help from LA to the Playa

Hello friends,

Camp Beaverton may need some help getting the bones of our shade structure to the playa. We're hoping one of our Beavers' rides will be able to help, but we need a Plan B in case he flakes.

We'll be building a monkey hut, so the largest stuff that would need transport would be 6 or 8 10' long PVC pipes. Certainly light and easy to transport for the right vehicle.

If anyone can accommodate this, please let me know!

Working on a Secondary Dome

Hey All,
I know I have been out of the loop for a while. But after browsing the Sex in the dome topic, I thought I'd let y'all know that Octavia and i have been throwing around the idea of a secondary dome. This would be a temple of sorts. Conscious Love Temple (working title).
This would be a place of quiet, prayer, meditation, and connection to the divine.

We are working defining our permission of sacred sex (definition: conscious sex that is aligned with spirit - tuning into the subtle energy body ala tantric or variations of).

Nevertheless, it will be a peaceful place one can go an escape the craziness of the burn and tune in within oneself or another :).

Still pricing the Monkey Hut, etc. But the intention is there. More specifics to follow.

Container for NYC/NJ crew

You may have seen this posted on other tribes, but just in case I'm posting this e-mail that Matt has been circulating:

"If any of you were counting on the 3rd container to get your stuff to the Playa this year,
they still have to sell 34 cu ft or else they will cancel! (here's the link to their site www.nyccontainer.com)

Supposedly there are 3 people who said they needed space but haven't purchased yet,
so if you are one of those 3 put some Hustle in your Bustle!

My other idea was for everyone who already paid for the 3rd container to chip in a little
extra to ensure it goes. With 50 people who have already purchased, it comes to only about
$6 extra per person, or 1 extra ft of space. Totally do-able right?

Hey all...

I'm trying to put together a list of all the "dooties" that need to be done around camp. I know we have a kitchen crew leader, and I know some people have volunteered as cleanliness bitch, MOOP mistresses, kitchen kunts, etc... So... can you all please let me know who you are? I figure we need the following:

Kitchen: Someone to make sure that the kitchen area is clean.
- and shifts for kitchen clean-up crew might also be nice beyond just the one in charge.
MOOP: Someone to make sure moop is picked up around camp
- same here - there should be a regular sweep every morning and every evening. Need shifts....

I'm sure there are other shifts and dooties around camp, but I'm not thinking at the moment... I just needed to get this out there so the emails can start flowing... and I can get this list started. I'd send you a link, but it looks something like:

As you may or may not know, I recently had a serious accident. I fell backwards 30' off a cliff while traveling in Bali. Since then, I haven't been operating at 100% -- I'm trying to get well and do my best with other commitments I have: to my job, to this community, to other projects.

So, it feels like a good time to reiterate that this year, we are all leaders. We should all be thinking about what and how we can contribute to the creation of this year's camp. I know I can use the help, especially now!

Clearing Conversations Leaders- an idea

I had a great conversation this weekend with another burner about his planning/ clearing call process.

He's camping with a group spread out in two cities. They networked by throwing little meet and greets at a home in each city, and then sat down with Skype and video conferenced the two parties together. It was a great way to meet "face to face" and introduce one another. It seemed like a great way to take the edge off what can be a complicated and sometimes intimidating process.

I wanted to throw that out there as a possible way for the conversations to take place. Perhaps more planning involved, but a much more jovial atmosphere, to be sure.

Pendant - Pre-Order

I finally got a quote on the pendants. They are going to cost 2x as much to make as last year. These are designed as a fundraiser - but we need some basic funds to get them manufactured first.

If I don't get a significant amount of pre-orders by next Thursday 10 July I will not pursue pendants. Significant = over 50 pre-orders.

To pre-order a pendant, please paypal me 12.00 per pendant to burningman@gypsyartist.org.... be sure to send me your address also.

if I end up making them, the post manufacture cost will be 22$. (2$ covers paypal fee + S/H)

I do not believe that they will be a gift as part of registering with the camp, so this will be the only way to get them.

Commitment to Freedom Community at Burn

I would like to know, since this will be my first time camping with Freedom Community at the Burn, what commitments are made to being part of this camp.

I'm sure a lot of this will be covered on the conference calls, and some of it might have been covered in other parts of this tribe. I'm just looking for as much clarity as I can, since we are so close to seeing the man burn.

Camp fees and camp size

Caryn wrote in today's email that camp fees are likely to be about $100 this year due to the status of fundraising 60 days out from the burn.

I have a question, and maybe this can be discussed here and on the conference call: What happens if we scale down the infrastructure of the camp this year?

The reason I ask is that I haven't seen a lot of activity on this tribe (which is not surprising, given how much tribe is down these days) and one of the issues we've had in the past is that a few people do a disproportionate amount of the work.

We have a lot of great ideas this year, but perhaps not enough people to implement them all without a few people doing most of the work. it may be helpful to get clear on what things we're committed to having, what things we'd like to have, and what things are "nice-to-haves" and to plan accordingly as camp fees come in. This may work really well paired with a tiered camp fee system: early commitments are cheaper, last minute commitments are most expensive.

I know the conference call is still more than a week away... thoughts on this?

Container cubic feet will be going on sale at noon Eastern Time on Wednesday, July 9th.

We are waiting for final prices but they wont be too far off from last year. If you purchase early, you will get a lower price.
