COME GIVE SOME SOAKING WET HUGS !

Who wants to have a waterfight this summer? raise your hands, and pull your trigger finger, cause we're going to get Soaked, totally saturated! and no one is going to stop, till this town runs dry!

need directions : click the link for a printable map
http://mattpearson.net/images/2008WaterfightDirections.jpg

Code of Conduct:

1) This is a water fight - don't bring any other weapons apart from water pistols, WATER BOMBS ARE MESSY SO CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF - littering is a crime and we love out planet.

2) We are not going to be your parents, nor are we going to be the police, if you see some one doing something stupid tell them to stop - if your doing something stupid - don't, your going to ruin it and this has the potential to be a massive laugh

3) Dress for the occasion, your going to get WET !
shorts, bikinis, flippers, floaty arm bands, whatever ?

4) Don't terrorise the public - if they want to get involved let them . THIS IS AN OPEN INVITATION

5) Don't bring camera's. They're going to get wet and DON'T come complaining when they don't work. There will be plenty of othere people involved devoted to taking pictures.

6) This is a LAUGH, don't take it too seriously, and don't beat each other up over it (close up shooting and all that).

7) Don't leave any mess behind!!! We come and then go (the place looks the same as it does when we came, that inlcudes plastic bottles e.t.c)

Cool DON'T GET THE ARMED POLICE DEPLOYED BY BRINGING WATER PISTOLS THAT LOOK LIKE REAL GUNS!!!!!!!!!

9) Please try not to use more water than you have to - preserve your supplies...... REMEMBER there could be a water ban this summer.

10) If anyone asks whos organised it - we all happened to be in the same place at the same time. amazing isn't it ?

11) No one get naked in the fountain - you could be arrested

12) No dyed water - it stains cloths AND it could stain the pavements..... Not good its vandalism

13) SPREAD THE WORD !!!!

14) OK, get naked, but I can't promise there will be a fountian......

Free Birthday Hugs
poiboy's 35th birthday
Sunday, April 27, 2008
1:00pm - 4:00pm
Location: The Good ol VAG (Vancouver Art Gallery)
Robson at Hornby Street

As anyone knows, I am a longtime avid Free Hugger. And I would love to spend my 35th birthday sharing affection, trust and care with as many people as possible. In 35 years I have learned a few things and have had many experiences *shared* with me. I would like to 'pay it forward' and just care about others as a focus for my 35th birthday. If you have never tried Free Hugging.. it is a very unique experience -very human- and it will *fill* you with abundant humbling energy.

:)

please, come join me.. and bring a sign.

It's been way too long since I've dished out hugs with you folks on Vancouver streets!
I vote we welcome this year's early spring with open arms.
How about Sat, March 8th at 2pm?
I'm wondering if we could do a mobile hug distribution on the Skytrain... maybe we could meet at Waterfront station and ride around the city and give hugs as we walk up and down the train cars.
I'm curious if anyone has tried this (I went to a newmindspace Skytrain party at New Years, but it was pretty huge) and if we think security will interfere?
Thoughts, concerns, suggestions?

New Years Day Free Hugs anyone?

Last year some of us gave hugs on New Years Day and it was a great way to start the new year. I'd like to do that again.... hoping I can get my man out too to look after Gavin so I can readily hug.

I like the Drive because it is close but I could reasonably get myself anywhere on the skytrain route.

Anyone else interested?

Parents resolve dispute over daughter's detentions for hugging
Published: Tuesday, November 13, 2007 | 9:51 AM ET
Canadian Press: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
MASCOUTAH, Ill. - Maybe they hugged it out - school officials resolved their dispute with the parents of a 13-year-old girl given detention for hugging her friends.

Melissa and Dean Coulter met with officials of the Mascoutah, Illinois School District 19 to discuss the two detentions given their daughter, Megan, for hugging friends goodbye for the weekend. School officials said the eighth grader violated a policy banning public displays of affection.

"Our whole purpose of the meeting was to get them to talk to us and discuss what changes needed to be made and if (the policy) could be improved," Dean Coulter said. "We scheduled it because we figured it was the right thing to do."

Her parents told her to serve the detentions to avoid getting into more trouble, and had planned to take the issue before the Board of Education at its meeting Thursday.

Superintendent Sam McGowen said in a statement Monday that the Coulters had withdrawn their request to speak at the meeting, and decided instead to meet with administrators.

"I'm grateful they sought this meeting and we could have a level of discussion that helps us both understand each other's concerns more clearly," McGowen stated.

He said he and Assistant Superintendent Terry Gibbons met with the Coulters on Friday and discussed the policy that led to the detentions.

"We told them that we reviewed it on an annual basis and that's where we left it," he said.

Coulter said McGowen was very receptive during the meeting, and that the family is satisfied with the district's promise to at least look into revising the policy.

"I just feel like we've accomplished what we wanted to accomplish, and that was for them to talk to us," he said

Free Hugs on World AIDS Day?

Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day. This year's theme is "leadership." People are being encouraged to take a "leadership pledge" that they will do something about AIDS (talk about it with friends, donate time or money, write letters etc.)

I thought it might be cool to give free hugs and pass out pledge forms (not asking for money) to interested people.

What do people think?

Just a reminder that there is a Global Free Hugs happening all day tomorrow. 800,000 people worldwide will be taking hugs to the streets or just finding a subtle way to increase the hugs in the world.

I will be going down to Sunset Beach and the English Bay area of the seawall to represent Vancouver and would love all the company I can get. I also put out a media release about it, so we may have some papers or news stations coming by.

I am starting at noon and going as long as I can. Reinforcements will likely arrive after business hours.

will be remembered as the biggest Free Hug day this world has ever seen. Everybody get ready, this one is going to be HUGE.

The Reason for the date,

September 10th is the day before 9/11. We will all sit down on that day and think about the tragedies that have befallen this world, we will think of the twin towers, of the iraq war, of the terrorist attacks all over the world. We will think to ourselves...what has this world come to? where has the good gone. That is why i created this event, so when you do ask yourself that, you think about all the hugs you had recieved the day before and you think to yourself that there is love left.
i want people to be reminded that this world has a great amount of good left in it, and that it should never be forgotten.

LETS MAKE THIS HUGE!

where should vancouver hug?

Hi all you beautiful people! I need a ride to Shambhala from Vancouver or Nanaimo on the 9th (I can easily take the ferry from Nanaimo to get to Vancouver to meet people).

If you or you know anyone who has a space in their vehicle let me know. Will share gas costs etc. And love the company.

I'm also looking for a ride home after (To Calgary) with a possible stop over to Nelson on the way back. I'm pretty cas on this one. Let me know if there's room in you vehicle!

Blessings,

formerly Vic Briggs of The New Animals.

Humble 60's Musician; a Star in Three Cultures
by K.R.Kaur

"I like the guitar playing of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Vic Briggs". - Jimi Hendrix 1967

Eric Clapton amd Jeff Beck. we've heard of, but who is Vic Briggs?

Oh yeah, he was the lead guitar player and arranger for Eric Burdon and the New Animals; remember "San Francisco Nights", "Monterey", and "Sky Pilot"?

"Vic Briggs was the most musically adept musician ever to pass through the ranks of the Animals in either of that group's major incarnations. His association with Eric Burdon & the Animals (sometimes called "the New Animals") made him a key player in British psychedelia, his skills as a guitarist and arranger evident on most of that group's hits from 1966 through 1968. - Bruce Eder"

So what happened to him?

Vic Briggs fell in love with East Indian music and culture and changed his name, at the beginning of the 70s. He is Antion Vikram Singh now, a practicing Sikh, In 1979 he became the first non-Indian to ever play classical Gurbani Kirtan, the sacred music of the Sikh religion, at Darbar Sahib in Amritsar Indian, aka The Golden Temple.

"Classical Indian music takes years and years of study, but somehow I learned Gurbani Kirtan very quickly. So quite suddenly, there I was, this white guy, doing this totally 'Kick Ass Kirtan'! It seemed to disturb them somewhat. They didn't quite know what to make of me. One ragi, Sikh musician, I was close to told me that another ragi, very well known, said I was 'haaneekarak' (dangerous)."

Then in 1991 Antion was introduced to the music and culture of Hawaii. Surprised to find how much it stirred his soul, Antion began to listen to and learn to play Hawaiian music. This culminated in his moving to the island of Kauai in 1993. He was fortunate to study with an outstanding Kumu Hula (Hula Master), Blaine Kamalani Kia. Antion Vikram Singh has now become known and respected for his Oli (Hawaiian chanting) and has performed at leading Hula Festivals and competitions all over Hawaii.

"For many years, I have believed that my life purpose is two fold:

First to inspire and empower others spiritually with the sound of my voice.

Second, to help others to inspire and empower themselves with the sound of their own voices.

Recently, I have been inspired to add a third:

To bring through my music and presence a sense of aloha and healing to all I meet."

I feel that it is time for our group to hit the streets & raise the vibration of this lovely city. Anyone up for doing a free hugs session again? I am thinking about June 10th around 12pm? I'd be able to stay about an hour before I need to head out.

Anyone game?
What location would you like?

Hey there everyone.
It's been way too long since my last free hug distribution.
I'm thinking with the spring approaching soon, now is a good time to share some last-minute-winter bear hugs for those chilly citypeople.
How about a gathering next weekend, the first week of March (spring month!) Sunday the 4th sometime in the afternoon. Any suggestions on location?

Hugs to all,

I thought you folks might be interested to see what people are doing with the image of the Neolithic couple found embracing. I found this on Etsy, which is a site for people to sell their handmade crafts (I have a store on there too). It seems that this discovery is truly impacting people.

i know there is a free hugs planned this sunday... that i will miss because i am setting up a group art show called Love In All Its Forms at Cafe Deux Soleils...(that you should all come to to see the opening night performance that night)...

but... how about a Free Hug on Wednesday the 14th? Folks who are just getting off work and who may not have much human contact on this sometimes nasty holiday could use a hug...

anyone up for a downtown valentines hug?

i find that i'd like to take part in chat / discussions about Vanc free hugs, but i'd rather get email messages to my inbox.
i don't always think to come look in here..

so i thought i'd also start a yahoogroup email list, so that those who are into the hugs can also discuss via email, and get the notices of when the next free hugs event is.

to subscribe, login to your yahoogroups profile & head to:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freehugs_vancouver/
or send an email to: freehugs_vancouver-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

"...Archaeologists in Italy have discovered a couple buried 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, hugging each other.

"It's an extraordinary case," said Elena Menotti, who led the team on their dig near the northern city of Mantova.

"There has not been a double burial found in the Neolithic period, much less two people hugging -- and they really are hugging."..."
I am doing a photography project about public and private space..
I think the free hug is the best way to present the idea of social disconnectivity and the need of human contact
i saw somebody today in downtown and sadly i was in a bus and passed it..
i wanna join if somebody plans to free hug tomorrow..

sooo, i have this wonderful lil idea that i want to throw out there to you beautiful hugging people (dare i say friends..)..

we have now had 6 excellent and fun-filled campaigns in the last few months in vangroover.
for lucky number 7, i suggest we up the ante a tad and have a really fun time of it as well.

*** free hugs vancouver 2 whistler ***

what i suggest is that saturday february 10, we all get into various (and hopefully numerous) vehicles > go for a power-up breakfast > drive up the sea to sky > arrive in whistler (and meet up with some friends who live there) > free hugs!!! > go for dinner or a hot tub visit > basque in the warm happy energy of the day > go home.

it would be a full day commitment obviously, and would provide a beauiful vista to engage in beautiful human interactions! we could maybe even make a vid of the adventure (a la the ever effective youtube medium).

well, why not huh?
call it a 2010 preview.
call it a lil valentine's prep.
call it a literal way to spread the joy of free hugging to our wonderful friends up the highway.

let's go play in the mountains (smiles)

..well, its just my lil idea..
:)

This article and great video was just given coverage in the UBC Alumni Grad Gazette - YAY!!!
Holiday Hugging: UBC Folk Spread a Little Love

Students and advisors at undergrad residence Korea-UBC House were so inspired by a free hugs campaign featured on YouTube (a website where people can post their own videos), they conducted and filmed their own hugging campaign in downtown Vancouver.

Standing nearby UBC Robson Square, several of these cuddling crusaders stood holding placards advertising free hugs.

But would members of the Vancouver public respond warmly, or employ their best avoidance tactics?

Watch the video to find out

__________________

It's incredibly well done and gave me that warm fuzzy feeling all over again!

Are any of the UBC folks on this tribe? Does anyone have a YouTube account and could send the maker an email inviting them to the tribe?

One final hug fest before Christmas??

I am new to this group...and, truly am so excited even thinking about hugging people in the future. Any chance of a free hug time before Christmas? I was thinking Friday the 22nd? My birthday is on December 23rd and I will be hugging a lot of people that day too....just by default.....

thoughts?

free hugs in globe and mail

(reposted from the Internation free hugs tribe, thanks to Lisa)

From Saturday Dec. 16 Globe and Mail

The new arms race...

Some people give to charity. Others pitch in at shelters. But a growing movement has a more intimate approach to spreading holiday joy. REBECCA DUBE investigates

Arlene Valiquette thinks you need a hug.

So do Joanna Potratz, Alain Archambault, Deborah Isaac and thousands of other people.

And they're taking matters into their own hands -- literally. On city streets and in malls across Canada and around the world, they're greeting strangers with open arms and signs that say, "Free Hugs."

"It's a real, warm, open hug," says Ms. Valiquette, who was recently kicked out of a North Bay, Ont., mall along with her husband and three-year-old daughter for offering no-strings-attached hugs to shoppers. "People need a boost, and a hug makes you feel amazing."
While hugging strangers is nothing new -- drunks and religious people have been doing it for years -- this particular wave of public affection was inspired by an Australian who goes by the pseudonym Juan Mann.

He started giving out hugs on the streets of Sydney in 2004, but his movement really took off on YouTube, where his Free Hug video has been viewed nearly 7.8 million times since it was posted in September.

"The moment I saw it, I was like, 'I want to do this,' " says Ms. Potratz, a 24-year-old photographer who regularly doles out hugs at a busy intersection near Toronto's Eaton Centre. "I was a little bit nervous the first time, but the response made it so worth it."

Mr. Archambault and Francois-Olivier Brochu also started offering hugs to co-workers in their Montreal financial services office after being inspired by the Free Hugs video.

Surprisingly, instead of sparking a round of remedial sexual-harassment training, their affection got an enthusiastic reaction.

This encouraged them to take their hugs to the streets, where Mr. Archambault recalls one particularly tough-looking guy walking by his free hug sign. He made it about halfway down the block and then -- "this giant, bigger than a tree" -- turned around and came back to get a squeeze. "He said, 'Thank you, I really needed that. I just broke up with my girlfriend of 10 years,' " Mr. Archambnault says.

The pair are now trying to organize an international day of free hugs on Dec. 23 -- which they hope will draw 10,000 participants to Montreal.

"We want to encourage social bonds," Mr. Archambault says. "Unfortunately, around Christmas, people are more into shopping than into doing something to express love. So it's a great time to do it."

Scientific studies have certainly shown the benefits of a good hug. Human touch reduces your levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, and increases serotonin, the feel-good hormone.

"Actual physiological changes happen in the body," says Scott Haltzman, a human-behaviour expert at Brown University in Providence, R.I.

He adds that the appeal of the Free Hug campaign lies in its simplicity: Hugs are universal.

"I think people who live in big cities are too isolated and they don't have the degree of social connections they once had."

Of course, thanks to a growing crop of hugging converts, this could be changing.

There are now free hugs on offer in Spain, South Korea, Italy, Russia, the U.S., Norway, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Hungary . . . the list goes on.

And on freehugscampaign.org, huggers exchange tips and debate the relative merits of rubbing versus patting.

Mind you, these huggers are mere amateurs compared with the likes of Mata Amritanandamayi, the living Hindu saint of hugs who embraced about 10,000 devotees this summer at a Sheraton hotel in Richmond Hill, Ont., as part of a worldwide hugging tour.

"Free Hugs represent some amazing things: unconditional love, acceptance and belonging," says Deborah Isaacs, 24, a Toronto hugger.

"The idea that something as simple as a cardboard sign could generate such warmth between strangers who would otherwise have walked right past each other is astounding."

Still, some people would rather just walk on by. Some assume that the huggers must be scam artists, or at least collecting for some unorthodox charity.

Others simply shudder at the thought of having their closely guarded personal space violated. Huggers report that some people cross the street when they see the signs, or deliberately avoid eye contact.

"At that moment, you're stretched between two natural human reactions -- avoiding potential problems, or reaching out to someone who's reaching out to you," Dr. Haltzman says. "How you balance that is part of the intrigue of this whole hugging phenomenon."

And then there are those people who take the invitation to "love your neighbour" a little too far.

"This one guy came up and grabbed my butt and tried to hump me!" Ms. Potratz says.

After explaining the Free Hug concept, however, she says the man apologized and she agreed to give him a proper, polite embrace.

"It really is a great way to reach out, and it's so easy."

Many of the huggers believe that they can change the world one person at a time, armed only with, well, their arms.

But in some cases the act of hugging also sparks further efforts at public service.

After appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show in late October, for example, Juan Mann started a Free Help Campaign, an online charity that aims to connect people in need with people who want to give help. So far, the site has 45 people asking for help and 133 offering help (most with time rather than money).

At the local level, Ms. Valiquette says her family is getting more involved in the community and volunteer organizations now that they have started hugging (they've also taken their hugs to other malls -- where they have been welcomed -- along with senior citizens' homes).

Ms. Potratz, a newcomer to Toronto, says her weekly hugging regimen has made her more confident about striking up conversations with new people.

But Dr. Haltzman says the legacy of the free hug movement will probably be limited.

"I see it more like streaking, which was fascinating and opened our eyes to a new way of seeing things, but quickly faded into the history books."

Rebecca Dube is a writer and editor with The Globe and Mail.

www.theglobeandmail.com/servle...nt/home

~~~~~~~
(my 2 cents)
sooo happy that they mentioned Amma. thats beautiful.. but..
"But Dr. Haltzman says the legacy of the free hug movement will probably be limited.
"I see it more like streaking, which was fascinating and opened our eyes to a new way of seeing things, but quickly faded into the history books." "
yeah...it will probably fade away just like that burning man movement which tried to start up over 25 years ago too.
where are THEY now huh??
did we not have a great time agai? even got "permission" from the marketing coordinator (whom i hugged) to continue hugging (?lol?).
what a great bunch you all were. and we again pulled in more 'outside' tribe folk and had 'em hugging. so good!!
i can't wait to see the pictures!
my highlight was having a japanese tour group looked confused, then read my japanese sign (which i could only closely translate to "please hug me") and all beginning laughing and smiling and waving. got two japanese grandma hugs thooo!
sweet!
thank you all very much for being so huggable..
For those who can't wait 3 weeks for another Free Hug-a-thon.... (psst! Dec.2nd @ Gr. Isl.)
I know I can't wait. I know poiboy can't wait. I know there are others who can't wait. And I know some people can't make it on the 10th. So....
Let's do another Free Hug on Saturday, December 2nd at Granville Island. Because there's no such thing as too many.
Imagine... lots of people to hug, close proximity to public restrooms, libations, snacks (donuts), etc. and I'm sure we can find some cover if it rains.
So... 1:00pm? beside the entrance to the market/ in front of the Arts Club Theatre?
Who's in?
We are creating a positive effect
We are having an effect.
This morning I was at a very cool new little cafe (Agro Cafe),
Hamilton + Davie...
The Owner (Cool dude) asked the woman who serves coffee if she needed
anything as he headed out. She said "A hug would be cool".
I offered a telepathic hug, when the owner said, "They were giving out
hugs this weekend. It's pretty cool they've been doing it for a couple
of weeks. I don't who they are. They have signs and give out hugs.
There were people lining up to get free hugs."
With a smirk, I thought about how the first rule of Pillow-Fight club
is "You don't talk about Pillow-Fight club". But seeing as this isn't
Pillow-Fight Club I said "I think I know who those people are, and I
think that as soon as I get to work, I'll let the list know that we
are having a really positive effect on things."
I think we are, because just seeing that made him feel warm and fuzzy
enough to give his employee a warm hug this morning, putting her in a
good enough mood to face the day with a smile.
So, I look forward to our Next Group Hugathon.
Napalm Dragon.
PS
If you are ever around Davie and Hamilton, check out this little cafe.
You'll notice pretty quickly that it's in the good books.
Subject: [Vancouver] Buy Nothing Day and Fair Trade Week at SFU
Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2006 18:20:02 -0800
Hey Jammers!
I've been working with Oxfam SFU to create a fair trade week from Nov. 20th - Nov. 24 and I figured it might be of interest to you. All week, except Thursday, we'll be selling fair trade goods on campus (Simon Fraser University, in Convo Mall) We also have some fun awareness raising activities that, if you participate in, you can be entered to win a gift basket of fairtrade items (One basket per day). We also have a gift wrapping station and cups of fair trade coffee by donation. On friday there will also be a swap meet, where you can get rid of your old junk and/or pick up someone else's "junk" for free! I encourage all of you to come out.
On Thursday, of course, it is BUY NOTHING DAY! We're going to be giving out free samples of nothing on campus and encouraging students to sign our buy nothing pledge.
On top of that, I'm also planning to do some BND things off campus, and I would love it if any of you could join in and/or help organize it. It is going to be a shopping-death-flashmob at metrotown in the evening. (Probably at around 6:30)
The details still need to be sorted out, but the general idea is that we'd gather into a big court area in metrotown mall and stage a "death by shopping" scene, where everyone runs in screaming and looking like consumourism has beat them up (bar codes stamped on skin, clothes hangers stuck in shirts, chokeing on monopoly money, etc.) and then we all die dramaticly. (Oh the creative potential!)
There will also be a more activisty part of this before the flashmob, where we will go around advocating Buy Nothing Day to shoppers. (Handing out flyers, talking to people, asking shoppers if they're aware about the impacts of consumourism, etc.) The idea is that we'd come in from all entrances in small groups (depending on how many people are participating), raise awareness, and walk towards the flashmob spot and meet up all at the same time. (of course, by meet up, I mean make a scene)
However, I'm not quite solid in this plan because I don't know how horrible the security would be with regards to our actions, so we're always open to more ideas :)
If you're interested please let me know!
Cheers,
-Loretta
Sounds great to me!
I'll have my kids and we'll at least be there for a spell.
I totally spaced on Saturday and missed seeing some of you and I had a friend in town and we could have been 2 more.
Ce la vie.
More hugs to dispense in 3 weeks time
YEAH!!
It looks totally fun and I think if there are kids there the "what's the catch people" won't be as many.
Plus, they like to hug, too. Well, at least my daughter does... The Boy... ;-)
Let's go out hugging!
Please, any one of you, take the initiative & call some hug dates, it's up to you to make it happen, i only started this tribe to connect us, not to orgnaize the hugathons!
I'm most likely away for the next couple of weekends, so i was also wondering how people feel about doing a hugathon on a weeknight, say a Thursday?
Greetings-
A very dear friend of mine,Jean who is soon to be 75 yrs young hugs everyone!We affectionately call her Jean Jean the hugging machine.
Many times we have met up and hugged. No matter what is going on in my life I don't worry or think about it when I am held in her loving embrace.
Yet-there are some who cannot be hugged.
They choose no touching for reasons all their own and for these people I visualize my loving arms wrapped around their hearts.
Poems about hugging
There's something in a simple hug
That always warms the heart;
It welcomes us back home
And makes it easier to part.
A hug's a way to share the joy
And sad times we go through,
Or just a way for friends to say
They like you 'cause you're you.
Hugs are meant for anyone
For whom we really care,
From your grandma to your neighbour,
Or a cuddly teddy bear.
A hug is an amazing thing -
It's just the perfect way
To show the love we're feeling
But can't find the words to say.
It's funny how a little hug
Makes everyone feel good;
In every place and language,
It's always understood.
And hugs don't need new equipment,
Special batteries or parts -
Just open up your arms
And open up your hearts.
