New way to brake...

Well it may not be new but I just figureed out that you can put your feet together, line up the wheels and rub them together while you're skating...

I can't do it quite well yet, but it seems with practice in getting your balance right and lining up the skates it could be an effective way to brake.

That's an interesting idea. I think it might be a litte dangerous at high speeds, but it's definately worth a shot.

    Nice going oo-long!

Yeah at high speeds you probably wouldn't have the leg leverage to do it well.

But I'm hoping that this is something to do at low speeds because it's HARD to come to a COMPLETE stop on these things. I can slow myself down quite a bit and sometimes I can carve into a complete stop if I'm going at the right speed, and I carve hard enough and the stars are aligned, but usually I'm still rolling a bit and the only way to stop completely is to step off.

Also there are times when there isn't enough carving room (like on a sidewalk) and being able to stop and go would be nice without having to swoop in and out.

Or maybe I just need more and more practice... it seems that I need less and less room to slow down the more I skate. One of these days I'll go for the speed bearings ;-)

        Hey guys,

I have been freelining for about one year, and every time somebody rubs the wheels, nothing good happens. If you can stop SAFELY by rubbing your wheels, go ahead. But I would not recommend it as a standard braking procedure. Stick to power carving. Definitely high speeds and wheel rubs do not mix. I have been power carving so hard that I ended up teaching myself how to ride switch after the carve, and now working on the 360. Keep riding!

You have been Freelining for a year and you still cant do the Ninja? I have only been doing it for a couple of months, still cant do it, but I was hoping it would take me less than a year. About braking I have not seen anybody been able to do a really effective stop with these things, but I am sure it is only a matter of time.

It's been a couple months since I made that post. I haven't practiced that little braking manuever since that day of experimenting ;-)

I can break pretty good now just by carving. At a slow speed I can carve it to a stop. At a fast speed I can speed check ~ok. However I have mentally tell my self to get my right foot out there. It's something right from the tutorials online, but If I don't think about doing it I'll just carve softly instead of sharply. I think it's something that most people neglect (at least I do) when going downhill, but it really is the key to safely going down steeper hills. Also wears down your wheels...

About the Ninja... Yeah dude I think it's a harder trick than it looks. After a little over 3 months of skating I think I'm close, but I think I've been saying that to myself for like 2 months ;-) I can spin to about 270, but the last 90 as well as coming out of it smoothly is something I still need to work on.

Also you could probably get it faster if you practiced it every day, but I think most of us can't resist the urge to just skate rather than stand around and practice tricks..

The other thing I can't do (and probably won't be able to do anytime soon) is the spinning stop. Like when they are going really fast downhill and carve hard enough spin around...
