Hi. I am in Waveland, Mississippi, a community completely devestated by Hurricane Katrina. I am looking to organize something loosely based on the Free Skool concept. I'm not sure what my time commitment is in staying in the area. I've been here four weeks so far. And will likely leave around Xmas time. This limited time frame, limits what I can and cannot do here re:organizing a project like this. Therefore i am looking to keep it a little more lowkey, yet hopefully very successful, and of course, ideally something that would continue after I left. If anyone has any ideas for me on how to effectively organize the format in such a short time frame, i'd be very thankful for your input.

Re: Katrina relief free skool
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 4:39 PMIt is hard to keep things going after the person who initially kickstarted it moves on. So the most important thing is getting good people who are really really into it involved very early. Even if their sparkpluggy nature makes them hard to work with. Because these people will be the inspiration and the motivators to keep it going after you go.
Bring people together to talk about the idea at a big meeting. Promote it through fliers and the entensive grassroots network you have down there now.
Tell them about the concept, the success of other free skools, and see where they run with it. Pitch the idea of free skool for school age kids. My guess is that particularly is really needed there now.
Let people take on whole chunks of the project, things they are bottomlining and have help with. Encourage a culture that holds each other accountable for doing what they say. Even in volunteer projects.
Talk to other free skools see what they did.
That help?
