Something a lil different from the Multi-talented Freyja

Of course we all know her as a dancer and have been learning that in addition to teaching belly dance, she teaches pilates - and is damn awesome at both, but what some of you have yet to experience are her skills with visuals. Yup, she's been moonlighting at nonstop bhangra with me tag-teaming on the visuals. In addition to nonstop bhangra she spent the night running visuals at Cheb i Sabbah's CD Release party at Temple. I'm a little hesitant to let her get on the video mixer now because she's about to put me out of a job with everyone raving about her and like "who's amar?" :). But i'm ok with that.

Now, you can see her awesome video tweakage on June 25 at Hip'n'Bass.
We're gonna have a great lineup of performances, and in keeping it different and ever-changing - we're mashing up hip hop dance with bhangra and belly dance.

We have a hip hop duet by Christine and Monica of Dhol Rhythms,

Freyja "Layering Technique"

Layering is an excellent technique used for dancing to different layers of the music at the same time. This workshop focuses on executing multiple movements simultaneously. Class begins with warm up and drills to activate muscle memory and prepare for more advanced layering. Movements are practiced individually and then combined. Emphasis is placed on proper breathing technique, traveling, layering slow movements over fast movements, slow movements over slow movements and fast movements over fast movements. Layering transitions as well as layering combinations will also be covered. Be prepared to sweat and focus on strong technique.
All levels welcome.

Freyja is teaching her brand new Belly Dance Core Integration workshop on Sat Feb 9 at Shoebox Studio, as part of Electric Vardo's Unmata fundraiser weekend in SF.

Workshop Description:

This workshop integrates principles of Pilates (a movement discipline that focuses on the core postural muscles that are essential to providing support for the spine) and applies them to our dance practice. Pilates is an excellent addition to belly dance in that it conditions the muscles that are necessary to develop a healthy and strong dance posture while deepening body awareness. This awareness of the individual muscle groups in the dancer’s body (particularly in the torso) helps in learning and improving various isolations used in the dance. We will learn some of the fundamental exercises of pilates and then apply them to various belly dance movements. The focus will be on moving from the core with strength and grace. By applying the techniques from this workshop, you can expect improved dance posture, cleaner isolations, increased torso flexibility and a better understanding of your core muscles and the role they play in your dance practice.

Tribal Fusion Freyja at Tribal Fusion Faire

In addition to having the best time mixing her set, I LOVED Freyja's performance at Tribal Fusion Faire. This was my third year there and Freyja's first. I felt so honored to be DJing for her performance on Saturday. It was so awesome to see Freyja and Zoe and Tanja all one after the other on stage. There were lots of great performances. Freyja, Zoe and Tanja's were just extra special to me this weekend.

Just in case you don't know, I want to tell you that Freyja is teaching pilates classes on friday mornings now, 9am at Studio Rasa in Berkeley.

I can tell you first hand that she is an awesome pilates instructor. I've been taking sessions with her and highly recommend her as a teacher. I'll be at the classes. Come check them out. Info will soon be posted on her website www.freyjafusion.com

So it's today, ?? years ago, that this beautiful wacky gal shook her booty outta the womb and into this world - and who knew that __ years later we'd have this Sassy Ass BootyLicious Becky as our friend and inspiration.

Lemme tell you haw honored I feel to have such an awesome friend and the most amazing person to collaborate with, not to mention the bestest (although sometimes stinky - but then again sometimes I'm stinky too) travel partner, someone who genuinely cares and pays attention, listens, gives and shares, makes me fall over laughing at her sweetly twisted sense of humor, kicks my ass into going to pilates (um, speaking of which, I better go to sleep so I can wake up for pilates in the morning). In addition to that, we know she's a brilliant artist and most amazing dancer who inspires others. I could go on, like I sometimes do, but i'd be repeating myself in all the ways I could describe how awesome she is and why I - and many others I know- love her.

I just want to say Happy Birthday to the bestest friend and business partner I could ever imagine.

Oh, and by the way, doesn't she just have the most beautiful hair in the world?

Hip'n'Bass with the bestest partner ever

Yep, She's the Hip - and I guess i'm the Bass.
Freyja and I kicked off our first Hip'n'Bass show last night at Underground SF. Of course, as usual, her performance was just wonderful. And so was Cera's. I really enjoyed Dave Sharma's dj set too. He just rocked it out solid.

Thank you to everyone who came out. We really appreciate your support and bringing a great vibe to our first night. Everything about tonight just made me happy - The performances, the enthusiasm of the club staff, all of you that showed up, and of course having the bestest partner ever. I know some of you even drove across the bridge just to see us. Thanks.

We look forward to seeing you again next month. We're just workin on the lineup and will have details for you soon. Remember, every Last Thursday of the month.

Licorice (Licky to his friends) is a beautiful 7-year old kitty; he is kind, gentle, and playful, and loves his "mom" Andra so much he'll let her dress him up as a bee (or the pope)…as long as there are treats afterwards, of course! You may know Andra from her tenures in FatChanceBellyDance, Ultra Gypsy, or most recently Azure Tribal Belly Dance.
Licky recently became very ill; after 2 MRIs, blood tests, a vet switch, exploratory surgery, and an extended stay in ICU, he is home now and feeling much better. Unfortunately, all of that added up to a monstrous vet bill: about $10,000! Andra is a preschool teacher and is also getting married in a few months, so Andra's closest friends have banded together to help out with the bill.
What better way to do so than to throw a belly dance benefit? We have an amazing dance lineup featuring some of the Bay Area's finest in belly dance, bhangra, and hula, plus 2 kickass DJs, and a raffle with fabulous prizes. Andra is performing twice: with the hula group, and with Azure. She and Licky thank you from the bottom of their hearts!

How did I get so lucky?

to have the opportunity to be working with this amazing woman, awesome dancer, rock solid soul, and ball of positive energy.

I have Fred to thank for connecting with her when she moved here, telling me about how awesome she is, and making sure I met her. I have Freyja herself to thank for connecting with me - I remember the first time I met her in person at Hip & Bass in Oakland 2 summers ago- and enthusiastically collaborating on what has turned into a multitude of projects, including Electric Vardo, ShadowDance - and just performing together. I think it all came together at the First Electric Vardo thatshe performed at in September - when she did her first piece together with Susie. Then it was all over from there. The 3 of us have been quite the trio since then, between her performances with me, her with Susie, me with Susie, and the three of us together

I'm excited about all the projects we are doing together, and for all the fun I have mixing her sets when we do gigs together. One of the highlights of my DJ careear has been collaborating with dancers and musicians, and Freyja and Sooozhyq in particular have proven to be the most awesome partners in what I describe as sweet creative collaboration.

I love watching her inspire people in many ways. She inspires me.
She's the best friend and creative partner ever one could ever ask for.
You Rock Freyja!
Simple as that!

how to increase your body awareness...?

hello

i was practicing (drumming) earlier and i came up with a question...how do you increase your body awareness?
For example, the next step in my progression is to learn to relax my hands more.

My hand technique is fairly relaxed, but I want to take it to the next level. And this change is going SLOWLY!!
I get it for a little while and then i lose it.

What do you do when you are in the steep part of the learning curve?

Yes, i'm excited to announce that Freyja will be joining me as an Electric Vardo promoter.
She and I will be producing the next Electric Vardo together on March 30th.

Full details will be released in the next couple of days. We're excited about the lineup and i'm extra excited that Freyja will be on board as my partner in the show that will mark 2 years for Electric Vardo.

I am so thankful for all of the people who have come together to suport and make Electric Vardo what it is. Freyja is returning to NYC after her appearance in the November HYBRID show at Galapagos. If you saw her fabulous performance, you know you'd love to learn some of her moves. If you didn't catch the show, don't miss this rare chance to get some great technique and fun new combos from one of San Francisco's finest!

In this workshop, Freyja shares some of her innovative, funky combinations influenced by various world dance styles including belly dance, flamenco, Indonesian, and hip hop. There will be a special emphasis on popping and locking, with a creative breakdown of muscular technique as well as tips to hone your speed, timing and transitions. The versatility of the combinations allows them to be tied into any style, ATS, tribal fusion, and cabaret. Warm up will include drills to increase strength, flexibility and balance. Asses in Ashland - the oregon tour

I'm havin so much fun right now travellin in Oregon with Freyja, Layla & Jeffe.
We had an unbelievable show in Eugene on Saturday with Lady Ra, Unmata, Dr Israel, Guerilla Tribal and the local dance crews, spend Monday night at Brightonbush hot springs, played and danced, danced and played, got a show tonight in Eugene and tomorrow in Ashland.

Is it work? Is it vacation? Whatever it is, it's awesome, and i'm so happy to have such a great travellin buddy and performing partner with me, and to be here with my family up north. It's such a great experience to be able to merge your passions with your career, "business" partners and collaborators being your best friends.

We'll be back home this weekend in time for Electric Vardo.

In this workshop, Freyja shares some of her innovative, funky combinations influenced by various world dance styles including belly dance, flamenco, Indonesian, hip hop and pop locking. The versatility of the combinations allows them to be tied into any style, ATS (add your own cues) tribal fusion and cabaret. The lovely lady from the North ~ Miss Freyja ~ will be gracing our stage on Friday, April 13th at our fun filled Pre-Festival show in Topanga Canyon at Froggy's Seafood Restaurant and bar.
Show starts at 8;00, but plan to arrive before so you can enjoy the beautiful creekside views from the large outdoor patio and get your food order in early. Then grab a good table in the main room so you don't miss a thing at the stellar show.

This is a fundraiser - donations will be going to SAVEDARFUR
