Freyr

public - created 12/27/05
This tribe exists to honor, learn about, and share experiences related to Freyr, also known as Fro Ing. Freyr is a Vanic god originally known to the ancient Saxon, Norse, and Germanic peoples. He, along with his sister Freya and their father Njord, joined the Aesir gods to end a long and brutal war between them. However, their mother (Njord's former wife and probably his sister) remained in Vanaheim. Among the Vanir, Freyr would have married his sister, but the Aesir did not allow this practice. Interestingly, Freyr and Freya are titles meaning "Lord" and "Lady" respectively. Freya or Vanadis, who wore a magical falcon-cloak and also rode a golden boar, was associated with wealth, sex, fertility, battle, death, witchcraft, and cats. For more about Freya, go to her own special tribe here tribes.tribe.net/clubfreya
Njord, their father, is associated with boats, merchants, fishermen, wealth, swans, good weather, and calm summer seas. He is now married to Skadi, a giantess associated with winter, hunting, and mountains, although they live separately. All the Vanir are connected to gold and amber, beauty, abundance, fertility, earth, water, and the western direction (sunset). Freyr now dwells in Alfheim, land of the elves, and is also considered the Lord of the World (everyday life), though he takes particular interest in Sweden. He is associated with nature, agriculture, herd animals, fertility, growth, male sexuality, weather, sunshine, rain, midsummer/midwinter, bogs, lakes, burial mounds, male ancestors, nature spirits, household spirits, the homestead, honey, dairy, wagons, boats, wealth, generousity, hospitality, peace, pleasure, and much more. Freyr is said to ride on a golden boar or travel in a boat which folds up into his pocket. He also has a horse named Bloody-Hooves. Two of his companions are known as Bee and Barley (or Wheat). His messenger/shield-bearer is named Skirnir (Shining One). Freyr once owned a magical sword which fought on its own, but he gave this up to win the love of Gerd, a giantess. Freyr now uses a stag antler as a weapon instead. No weapons, bloodshed, or criminals were allowed in his sanctuary. The same applies here. Please be kind and respectful of each other. Whether you identify as Heathen, Asatru, Pagan, Wiccan, or none of those, you are welcome. No belts or knots were allowed to be worn during his rites, so please loosen yours before entering this tribe. Please post any scholarly research, personal opinions or experiences, comparative mythology (ie. Celtic), recipes, rituals, writings, etc. related to Freyr, his Vanir or Aesir family, the Alfar, and other Spirits of the Land.
