superstitions

okay, some superstitions i get. if you walk under a ladder there is a higher chance of something being dropped on your head. if you open an umbrella indoors there is a risk of breakages. but some of them are just insane. like if a rook lands on a house someone in the home will die. well, yes sooner or later......only walk round a churchyard clockwise....i have no clue on that one. my friend from college was catholic and of irish desent, the only person to ever make me wave at a magpie.
and my personal favourite, if i bird shits in your hand it is lucky. quite how this could be constued as fortunate i have no idea. maybe it was aiming for your head?
so who else has some odd superstitions to share??????
do you believe in any of them???

Never set your purse on the floor because all the money will run out and you'll find yourself short.

Lift your feet off the floor of the car when you are going over a railroad track,
touch the roof, and say peanut butter...I dunno why - so weird...
but someone convinced me of htat one when I was a kid
and it stuck for a lot of years - I'm over it now.

The church clockwise thing is a pagan leftover- all things holy went sunwise (clockwise) and unholy went agains the sun(counterclockwise)

          never whistle on a ship.

Hold your breath while going past a cemetary. something like if you were breathing the dead would take your soul. I don't know, I always thought it was weird.

not so much a superstition......but my friend max in virginia has passed on the notion of saying hello to potential ghostlike entities as i pass cemetaries........just in case one of them may be hanging round (and i am not convinced that they even exist) i too now say 'hello dead people' out of sheer habit.

                i hope it ain't a long tunnel!

My aunt says that when women try to get pregnant they should not live in high places (i.e. apartments) because it ruins her chances.

People used to think (some still might) that if you stood on your head after sex you had a better chance of getting pregnant.

actually there is some fact in that.. when i was trying to get pregnant through artificial insemination the doctors tilted my pelvis up, so everything would stay inside longer.. gravity works to help the sperm find the egg.. kind of gross, but there you go

The M Play, I have been involved in a few productions where the Scottish play was mentioned and here is a list of things that occurred after it was stated and ignored.

Man playing Mac B, had a drill bit drilled through the center of his thumb

I received a concussion when half of a garden arbor set piece fell on my head

Most of the cast lost their voices 3 days before the show opened

electrical shorts started happening in the theater

Car problems, and needing to be jump started

It was very weird, but each of them happened after the plays name was mentioned...

My friend slipped on a mysterious puddle of water onstage and broke his thumb and wrist after mentioning the play in a dress rehearsal.

my superstition is devils coming through the mirror from other dimensions. I certainly can't make it happen. maybe theres some sicko way to do such. like someone manipulating their own emotions and behaving masochistic. really, just a superstition.

i know the church one.. they say that when doing spells or any type of magic you should always go clockwise because that only allows positive energy, and counter clockwise is negative.. i'm thinking they are thinking along the same lines and if you go counter clockwise you are calling negative energy

When I was little, my italian mother put the fear of God into me if ever I did the following things:

      - never place a loaf of bread upside down
      - never put hat or gloves on the bed
      - never make a bed with another person

and even though i don't buy into the superstitions (mostly having to do with someone dying a premature death) i find myself subconsciously obeying these commands.

i believe the hat and gloves thing comes from when doctors made housecalls. if they took off their hat and gloves and placed them on the bed, it was out of respect for the recently departed... it's basically symbolic of death.

i want to say yes.... but i have no recollection of plot or actors.... i have a vague sense that Matt Dillon was the lead... i suppose i can imdb it, but can you refresh my memory? and does it touch on the 'no hats on the bed' superstition or just superstitions in general?
