Hello all I am currently considering a move to Calgary to continue my education, I've looked into the U of C and that seems sound but I am still seeking more information regarding the city it's self. If anyone here has any first hand knowledge (or even stories from friends who do) I'd love to hear it.
thanks,
Justin

Re: Calgary?
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 12:02 PMI understand it's quite hard to find a place to live,
but I've also heard that because of a lack of people
available to work in the service sector (everyone is
in the tar sands apparently), you can get paid $20 an
hour to wait tables, before tips. -

Re: Calgary?
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 12:17 PMHey Justin, I was just poking around the web and your post caught my eye because I'm also named Justin! And I'm in Calgary!
Calgary is a beautiful city. I moved here from Vancouver, and I love it. The U of C is a great university too, I've never been there myself, but I hear good htings about it, their campus is beautiful. I'm saving up to take courses there eventually.
The above poster is right, however. finding a place to live is a difficulty we now face because so many people moved in recently from the Maritimes to accept jobs here. I think I heard on the news that we have a 30% homlessness rate. So that would likely be your biggest challenge (Incedentally we have a roomate moving out next month and are looking for someone to take his room, but that's probably a shorter time-frame then you are looking for)
Likely you can work something out with the University, I'm sure they have dorms or something.
I didn't intend to join this tribe, but that's ok :) I'm very new to this site but felt a desire to respond to your post and didn't know I had to be a member of this tribe to post, but I got accepted as a member so I'm making this post. hehe. (Even though I sent you a pm off your profile after tring to post here the first time *sigh*.) -

Re: Calgary?
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 12:20 PMOh one other thing I wanted to say, but it slipped my mind (sorry for the double-post) is that coming from Utah you will likely find our winters EXTREMELY cold. This year we've had a plesant winter, with only two days at -30 celcius. Most of the time in the winter, it's just below freezing point (0c.. not sure what freezing point is in Fahrenheit).
I've been to Utah in the summer to visit my uncle when I was younger and the heat there is simply unbearable! It'll likely be the reverse for you here :). -

Re: Calgary?
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 12:26 PMSorry for triple-posting! I'm bad but my mind is scattered and I just thought of something else that would be relevant to your decision;
Despite the fact that we have a housing problem... we also have a labour shortage. Most entry-level places (ie: fast food or retail) are paing 10-15 bucks an hour because there's not enough people to fill the jobs.
It's really strange situation. we don't have enough people to fill jobs.. but we don't have any homes to put more poeple into.
If you were looking to have a part-time job while you go to University, this is probably one of the better places to do that in right now!
I re-read your post and you were asking about 'the city itself' which is kind of vague. We have an extensive transit system, with a main light rail transit that connects most of the city. I could hop on the train in the south end of calgary where I live (just a few blocks away) and ride it directly to the UofC campus in the north on the other end of the city. If you manage to live somewhere near c-train it's awesome because you are 15-30 minutes away from all the major malls. If you live a little further out you'd have to take a bus to the c-train, but the bus system is pretty extensive too. -

Re: Calgary?
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 3:20 PMYes I think I'm tired too because the city it's self is rather vague. You see I've lived many places (all in the U.S.A.) and traveled more (some in Europe and some in Central America in addition to the U.S.) so I've gotten to know a number of cities in one sense or another. I try to wander around and get a flavor for the place. You know architecture, how sharply the "sections" of the city divide. Music scene, theater, transit, weather, services, jobs, housing, education. The works really. So while it is a *very* general question I'm seeking any and all input really to get a sense of where things stand. Thank you (triple post or no) for all of the information it's quite helpful to get some insight. Yes I'm betting the cold would be somewhat of a shock, I've never lived anywhere quite that cold before but it's not as bad as it could be because UT is a desert so while the summers are hot the winters are pretty cold... only about half of what you're getting in Calgary as I understand it, but nothing a couple layers of quality clothing wouldn't fix (at least I hope *grins*). My time table for being up there is something around next fall due to all I have to work on in getting a visa and transferring credits etc. working with not one not two but *four* (to universities and two governments) buracratic organizations is a bit of a bear, but I've always been known for tenacity so I believe I'll be fine *grins*.
The job situation sounds grand, now I'll just have to figure out where to live... dorms are good and maybe the answer but my situation is complicated (or may be) by the possibility that a friend of mine might be coming up as well. She wouldn't be starting school quite as soon as I would and there's the double catch, one no school right off and two the whole mixed gender thing... at least that's often a big deal in the states (but I would be jubilant to hear it if that's just an issue native to the U.S.)
It's also great to hear you have such an effective rail and bus system, I've been missing that ever since I returned from Europe so the idea of having one right where I'm living is *quite* refreshing. If you think of anything else to add ((or on the off chance you have any suggestions for me as to how I might go about looking for housing options before I get up there)) I'd be grateful.
Thanks again,
Justin
P.S. anyone else who has anything to add I really am looking for all the perspectives I can get.... oh and does anyone know if there's an active SCA or Martial Arts community somewhere in the city? Because I really want to stay active and my hockey skills are minimal at best ;p -

Re: Calgary?
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 7:40 PMYou meantion 'wandering around the city to get a flavour of the place. Well... our level of art appreciation is primitive compared to many places (Even our neighbours, BC for example has beautiful art culture). We have one overpass that they decided to put in an engraving of FISH of all things. (We're not on the coast, we're not known for fish exports.. but there it is).
Alberta is a very profit-mided country. our art school here (Alberta Colledge of Art and Design) teaches art as a 'business'. Unlike in a lot of places where art is appreciated for art's sake, and the artist graduates and works as a waiter while he pursues his dream, ACAD focuses on careers from the get-go. If you arn't doing it to make a profit, it's not worth doing (that's alberta's mentality pretty much, and one of the things I don't like about this province).
What do you mean by 'mixed gender' thing? You mean a boy and a girl living in the same dorm while going to school? Pretty sure that's just a fundamentalist-state minded thing. UTAH is most known for that. I'm sure you wouldn't have that issue in, say, California or Florida, so to say it's a 'native US' issue is a little off. While Alberta is probably the most 'Conservative' of the provinces, I would be very supprised if that turned out to be an issue. (But then I'm open-minded. Hey, the roomate that's moving out is a Male to Female transvestite for crying out loud who is moving in with her girlfriend, and we accept her for it. Can't get much more liberal thinking than that.)
There are several martial arts instructors. Also you can do all kinds of arobics at various leisure centers all over the city (swimming too). There's allso of course the YMCA (I'm sure you have those in the states too?)
I'd be suprised if there WASN'T an SCA community here. Actually I'm pretty sure there is. I frequent a pagan supplies store (not wiccan myself, but I like the atmosphere) and some of the guys were showing off the swords they had made so I think they are involved in the SCA. So if that's your thing it's a good bet you'll find them here.
As for finding about looking for housing options, I've helped one other friend move here for Winnipeg so give me a shout if you decide to move and I'll see what I can do to help you.
I don't believe in coincidences. The fact that your topic happened to be on the very top of the list on the tribe website when I came across it must have been syncronity, which is why I subscribed to tribes to respond. Let me know if you do decide to move out here and I'll see how I can help you. -

Re: Calgary?
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 7:41 PMJust thought of something else. You may want to spend a few days in the city on a holiday or something if you can afford it just to get a 'feel' for the place before deciding to move here.

Fri, January 19, 2007 - 11:12 PMI'll never forget back in me traveling days landing in Calgary. It was a dark night and I walked through a tunnel when switching planes. Outside the window I sensed an almost dark greenish hue. Maybe i was seeing things. -
