what does nelson have to offer?

Hey there!

my lover and i are moving back to canada, me after years away, her for the first time.

we haven't decided where we're gonna settle so we wanted to hear from folks about nice places to be.

she is allergic to fragrances and other chemicals and unfortunately, pot. she also has some repetitive stress issues.

i clean houses for work and she nannies for newborns and nightnannies for twins. she's also a professional personal organizer and assistant. i'm good at a bunch of things.

we're both big homebodies, but like to go out and have fun a few times a month and also see friends a bunch, her at home, me at home and in cafes and whatnot.

we both like walking alot and don't really like cars so much. neither of us can drive.

she wants to find out if she can really write a novel and wants to spend alot of time writing. i like to make art alot. someplace that had classes or places to creatively share or explore would be great. i would like a separate studio (it can be small) where i can make art cause she is allergic to the chemicals.

you guys seem to love Nelson. what do you love about it? what makes it a great place to live?

    i think nelson would have everything you're looking for, a supportive community, fun nightlife, art classes (and writing too), everywhere in town is walking distance to downtown, affordable rent, employment opportunities, and a creative 'vibe' like you wouldn't believe. there are so many talented people here, i find it very inspirational and motivational. we even have a queer scene with social gatherings every couple of months. it's hard to explain what makes nelson so great, but once you live here, it's hard to live anywhere else. check out some of the local tribes;

      affordable and available rent are two very different animal's that seem to want to occupy the same body.....

      i take it she's allergic to fragrance? since you mentioned it more than once? well as long as she can survive patchouli I'm sure she'll be fine.

      It's like anywhere here, people live here if they couldn't they wouldn't be here, people have children children grow up here and sometime they never leave here... I like that about this place. I just got here, Ilike it some, a hella lot more than where I moved from, and so do alot of people from their as a testiment to Nelson's refuge status... alot of people move here from other places, it's a nice place.... I have my negative points to about it, but I don't need to share those.... if you move here like anywhere else you'll find something special, or you'll move away, ces la vie.

        what don't you like about it? it's a long way for us to go if it won't suit us. it's better we know what's not good about the place. i've been to 22 countries so far so I'm pretty open to lots of stuff, but she's a bit of a princess... though she can fit in most places if she can still breathe.

        and for the person who mentioned patchouli... is it really a big thing there? she's pretty allergic to essential oils, with patchouli and incense being in the very bad column.

        also, does kootenay school of the arts still exist? someone told me that it was threatened with closure a while ago.

          people who have lived here and travelled all over the world have said this a place like no other... it is a majikal place, where you can create what will happen for you.... it could be amazing and it could suck... there are always things to be skeptical about when moving to a new place.... it isn't always roses and clover... there will be times that will challenge you in ways you thought you were totally solid... it will bring you closer to a different conciousness within yourself..... be prepared for all the good and the challenges that come your way... just like anywhere in life.... but it is a place of growing and healing changing, developing ones self... and slowing down... there are people who come here form all kinds of places that are sensitive people in allergies and food sensitivities etc... the little town has a good selection of alternative foods and is fairly concious of health in general, but likes to have a good old fashioned hoopla every so often... I say come and see... visit... don't just look at pics and say what a beautiful place... we have all had our best and worst of times here... but everyone is different in them.
