Tell me your story!

Our life is a series of activities and work is one of them. Work is very important because we spend most of our time there, away from family, friends and our favorite activities. But what would happen if you could combine both fun and work? Is that really possible? The answer is YES. Work can be fun! Not because of the actual activities you do, but because of the people that are involved with you in the work environment.

Take for instance my company, Tait & Associates, we are a group of people involved in engineering, architecture and environmental work and yet the people that work here are so cool that it is not at all a stuffy, pencil pushing place. The people that work here are into many different things and so talking with them is fun. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed so that every day is just a series of activities while spending time with friends.

We have monthly birthday celebrations, we get company tickets to fun events like baseball games, hockey games and other special activities that are scheduled around our hobbies. We've had tailgate parties, softball B.B.Q's, fishing trips and random luncheons just to round up the troops. Just the other day, we got to go to a Laker game and it was all set up by our company.

My point is, fun can be part of work, it just depends on what type of company you work for. So what about you, what's your story?

I live in Chicago and I work for The Salem Group Agency. My current assignment is with a construction site at Loyola University. The Project Manager that I work for is such a sweet guy. He's very laid back. When the weather is nice we leave work early so he can ride his bike or some days he treat me and my fellow co worker to lunch. It's nice to work at a job and not have a supervisor that micro manage and constantly looks over your shoulder. I would like to be hired here permentantly.

    Yessica,
Fun in the workplace. It is well worth working for a company that builds fun into the way they do business.
I put golf into my business and now I have people calling me to take me out to play golf so they can learn how to bring golf in as the way they do business.
It is a great sport and is great for business.
In a couple of discussion I have had with business leaders they are looking for something that all of their employees can do together as a monthly outing. Since most of them do not play golf I suggested to the CEO he look at having his next company conference at a golf school. I showed him how it worked.
It is simple; once everyone in the company starts playing golf they all have something in common. And it also provides an opportunity for each employee to take a customer out to visit with him/her on how business is doing. It also provides a way for every employee in the company an opportunity to participate in securing the companies customer base. Taking customers out to play golf builds loyalty amongst the customer base and will draw in more customers when they here the company takes their customers out to play golf. Having golf as something each employee is allowed to do also builds loyalty to the company.
Lots of fun and it helps the business keep all of their employees employed.

      Hello Duke,
Thank you for adding your story to this posting. Tait & Associates, Inc. has a golf league and we have golf games every week. Most of our Associates participate on a weekly basis and we also host an annual golf tournament. In short, I agree with you that golf certainly puts the fun into any company and that those who do not have a golf league should definately put some thought into it.

All work and no play is no fun. I know this guy who works for Tait, his name is Kirk F. He comes out to our facility once a month to inspect the spill containments for the UST to make sure that we are in compliance. Kirk is a very cool guy, seems to really like his job. If you know Kirk, tell him I said Hello.

      Hi Kathy,
Thanks for contributing to this topic. I'm glad that you're having a positive experience with one of our Associates. It's always great to hear good things about our people!

I work for a huge conglomerate in and spend time in Houston and the Midwest. I'm an engineer by degree but most of my time in sales and marketing. I really like the local people I work with but become quite frustrated at the corporate beauracracy. Who doesn't? So many executives running around with nothing to do except plan for the next re-organization. This get them onto "transistion teams" and makes them feel busy. Argh!
