We're more of a tribaret troupe and we're looking for a kick *** song to dance to for a major performance. We are doing a solace song, and Bombay by Timerland...we want something dramatic for the last song, maybe something that has nice sections so each of the troupe can have a moment in the spotlight.. We've been kicking around some non-traditional music like bands such as Massive Attack and Nine Inch Nails but so far we haven't found anything that we feel works well. We like a moody, gothic sort of start but it needs a kick to it...we're open to suggestions of what other songs/bands we can try. Anything you can suggest and we'll be thankful in our search for just the right song! We want to find something that hasn't been done to death...our Solace song, Nataraja, is about as traditional as we get but it should work side by side with this other song somehow. I've tried all the bands that have been mentioned here but when I start searching youtube I find that alot of the songs are already being used by bellydancers and we don't want to repeat...

It's an album due out in May, made up of 3cds of the best bellydance music.... including one totally decicated to fusion. It will have 16 fusion tracks, including 7 exclusives and several other rare tracks! It's been compiled by a UK based dj who REALLY knows his stuff, with the input of several dancers.... and it shows. It's gonna be a very exciting release I reckon

Now, these days the man who fears fives has become a household name in the tribal fusion bellydance scene, and I'm surprised that no one has yet mentioned him here! The music that he created for the BDSS and The Indigo's/Rachel Brice's performances have truly changed what we dancers have come to want and expect from fusion belly dance music. While he calls some of his work, "Difficult Listening," (hehe) the glitchy soundscapes mixed in with Middle Eastern rhythms have really altered the musical landscape from which we dancers pull. I don't think I had ever heard a 10/8 Sama'i rhythm created completely with industrial metal sounds before I heard "Some Eye" (also called "Same High"), and the thought that I would ever hear something like hadn't even crossed my mind. Today, it is rare to attend a fusion belly dance show where at least someone is not performing to his work. In addition to being a pioneer in the genre, he's an intelligent and all-around Good Person with a quirky sense of humor.

Let's hope that he releases a new body of work soon!

Coming this April, EMP is releasing Moon Moth Mixes: A Belly Dance Practice Companion, produced by Solace and Blue Damsel’s Rachel Lazarus Soto. The Moon Moth Mixes is a collection of five 13+ minute tracks designed for belly dance class/workshop use and drilling. Each track maintains a steady tempo for the entire length of the song, while the feel of the tracks weave in and out of many moods creating an amazing array of diversity. There are two slow tracks: one frame drum piece and one electronica piece, and three uptempo tracks in varying tempos from slower, to medium, to fast, so that you can progress your class or your own drilling with the advancement of your proficiency. Featured in the mixes are samples from Ruben van Rompaey's re-released Eastern Expressions 2: Gomera, Maduro's Shimmer Sustain, Solace's Nagari, as well as a full length remix of 'Jiva', from Solace's Nagari, and a full length remix of 'Sleeping Sober' from the upcoming (early 2008) Solace Release Opium Head. These mixes were assembled by Jeremiah Soto, the writer/producer of Solace, and may be considered some of his finest work yet. This disc will be available for pre-order, so visit our store!

The San Francisco Bay Area is a magnet for world music players, and Lumin is another bubble floating up from that global stew. The group is born from another band, called Stellamara, with Jeffrey Stott and Michael Emenau. In Lumin, they are joined by singer Irina Mikhailova. Born in Kazakhstan, Mikhailova is an enchantress who wails in a voice that fuses her Kazakh and Russian roots, with eastern European vocal styles and Middle Eastern effects. Sometimes singing in Bulgarian, her native Kazakh, or her own hybrid dialect, she creates the sound of ecstasy and lament, often simultaneously. Mikhailova is surrounded by a kinetic mix of grooves from Emenau, free-wheeling through a rhythmic landscape of electronic sounds and acoustic percussion samples. Stott weaves it all together, playing Middle Eastern oud, hammered dulcimer, and a bowed string & drone instrument called the yali-tambur. While rooted in folk music, it's a hallucinatory blend, laced to trance grooves and melodies that reach across the heavens and into the soul. --John Diliberto
