You can listen to & download free mp3 clips of all of the tracks at the site. There's also a "pick your price" sliding-scale as well as an option to plant a tree for $2 for a carbon-zero transaction. (One thing I'll say for them: Earthville is cool.)

____________________________________________

Here's part of Earthville's write-up about the record:

"In their debut studio album, SATU (which means "one" in the Indonesian language), Gamelan X takes us on a rhythmic and melodic pilgrimage through an impossibly variegated musical landscape. Interlocking patterns played on dozens of bronze gongs (ranging from a few inches to several feet in diameter) form the through-line of this wildly eclectic 67-minute sound-world odyssey. Over, under, in, and around these klanging, sparkling grooves are woven sinewy string and woodwind melodies, punchy horn lines, extraterrestrial electronic textures and, just when you least expect it, a haunting, nearly-wordless lyric soprano that breathes otherworldly humanity into the mix."

We're looking for a very specific kind of musician - one with facility in playing both a treble melody instrument or two (or three) as well as keyboard (specifically, fat, twisty synthesizer basslines). In addition to these qualities, having percussion skills and facility with electronic/computer music production are both highly prized. Your improvisational voice on your melody instrument(s) is a big part of the picture. Music reading skills and a solid rhythmic sense are imperative. Gamelan experience is also a big plus, of course.

If you have already contacted us, please accept our gratitude for your patience and forbearance. There's no need to write again unless you'd like to send updated information (music links, etc.).

Gamelan X world music ensemble presents dynamic, all-original music for concerts and dance events. Drawing musical inspiration from Indonesian, Balkan, African, Indian and American traditions, Gamelan X combines complex interlocking rhythms and sinewy melodies into a visceral groove experience that excites and entrances audiences from all walks of life.

Instruments used include dozens of small and large gongs, wind and stringed instruments, synthesizers, drum set, and percussion from across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. With this sound-palette - injected with engaging group choreography and crowd interaction - Gamelan X takes audiences on a journey through a wide range of exotic musical spaces.

we play traditional and original sundanese compositions, predominately within the context of the gamelan set but we've had guitarists, saxophonists, western drum kit, etc in the past and present. our set is actually a hybrid of central and sundanese sets, custom made for us, but our music is totally sundanese.

it's cool to hear a fusion of different styles as is with your group. i checked out your examples on myspace and they rocked. i sent a message there and got no reply however it might not have actually sent.
Thursday June 21, 2007 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Orientation starts at 12:00 PM at the "Solarium" 55 Second Street (between Market and Mission)
The workshop will move on from here to other nearby spaces announced during the event.

To join the group any time between 12-2PM: call 1-877-YO-REBAR for an updated workshop location. The toll-free number will be updated throughout the event until 2:00 PM.

Celebrating the finale of Rebar's yearlong COMMONspace project, and punching a hole in the scripted landscape of downtown's high rise office environment, Rebar teams up with Gamelan X & One People Voice to bring Kecak to San Francisco's POPOS (privately-owned public open spaces). Join us in remixing Kecak into the core of commerce, and experience an exhilarating ritual that relieves stress, heightens our ability to listen and increases our awareness of each other. Balinese Monkey Chant, a.k.a. Kecak (pronounced KETjak), is a ritual of vocal, interlocking rhythms and physicality. This workshop is an American reinterpretation of an ancient Indonesian form of community singing that provides an engaging -- even transformative -- interactive experience.
In this roving event, free and inclusive Kecak workshops will be offered to the public in several downtown locations. Come vocally and joyously expand the bandwidth of behavior within the domain of global corporate capital!

Gamelan X is currently holding auditions for the position of drum set player.

We're seeking a drum set player with rock-solid time, multi-stylistic technical fluency, and a love for deep grooves. Sensitivity and musicality are paramount. Our music is highly dynamic and is based around the interlocking rhythmic principles of Balinese gamelan music. This approach to rhythm involves complex interwoven textures, and the drummer we're looking for must be interested in this sort of ensemble playing (as opposed to exclusively bull-headed, soloistic and i'm-a-drummer-so-i-don't-have-to-listen styles of playing). To be sure, being the drummer of this group involves many featured moments, but without the enthusiastic desire and technical facility to embed oneself in a polyrhythmic texture we won't make it past the first date.

The ability to read musical notation is desired, but not essential. Multi-instrumental and composition skills are a plus, as are experience and knowledge of the musical traditions of other cultures.

Please reply to this posting to schedule a casual interview/improvisation session/audition.
SF Guardian - Picks
Friday Feb. 23, 2007

Gamelan X
Since the word gamelan comes from the Javanese word game -- meaning "to strike or hammer" -- am I right to assume that the Bay Area's own Funkadelic of ethnomusicology, Gamelan X, are the sound of hammering to the 10th power? It sure as hell sounds that way, judging by the trance-inducing rhythms pinballing between Balinese gongs, drums, and xylophones as this formidable primitive-futurist improvisational collective of epic proportions bashes out Indonesian marching music made for dance clubs yet to be conceived. Look at it this way: you could either stare at those four walls of yours to usher in Chinese New Year or give a wink to the Year of the Boar by joining Gamelan X in their quest for provocative new head spaces. Your choice.

If you were there, you know what a beautiful night Paul orchestrated. The bands (especially us, of course) were all really on fire (so to speak), and the crowd was warm and supportive--cheering and dancing up a storm. The tesla coil, steam engine, and sculpture installations were great, and somehow the train whistle incorporated itself perfectly into the music (hobo nostalgia abounded).
Steve Raspa and Paul Jorgenson both addressed the crowd, both basically appreciating what a loving, active, visionary community we are part of. Yup.
A huge thank you to everyone who came.
Paul plans another benefit soon. Don't let your friends miss the next one.

Greetings from A-land. Our maneuvers proceed apace. This month should see the building of two more unique instruments; we're leaning toward developing the Unibas over the Pedab for we feel the Unibas will be easier to make and to begin practice with.

(We've flown off of the nut and now simply design our own instruments since we have little access to foreign-born Masters; the Unibas is a one-string instrument meant to surrogate the gungs, the Pedab is a three-stringed dulcimer-esque instrument that could be seen as falling somewhere amidst reyoung, drum, and gung. They called me mad at the academy, but those fools were simply unable to comprehend the scope, majesty, and sweep of my theories).

Our last show was fantastic; strangers were impressed and Austin closed us out with stunning impressions of both Johnny Cash and Kermit the Frog. Which song was sadder? Maybe you'd be surprised - maybe not. Kermie has depth. Piggy has always known this.

Our next open house is in March.
