GUIDELINES FOR A GREAT GAME

I’d like to share a few thoughts with the group about our upcoming adventures. This is going to be my first shot at DMing an extended campaign and I know many of you are fairly new to gaming as well. For the most part that’s great because we can all progress together, but it does slow things down a bit because there are so many factors in play at a time and, let’s face it, not many of us have the time to read the Player’s Handbook cover to cover. It will take us a while to get the hang of it all. So here are a few suggestions for you to consider or comment on that I think will really help us stay focused and in character as much as possible:

1. Know your character:
I realize that even the process of building a character can be a bit overwhelming at first, but there is nothing as frustrating as coming to the table unprepared and having to look stuff up on the fly, or realizing after you’ve taken a major hit in battle that you forgot to include some bonus you were supposed to have. That’s why we’re starting at 1st level. For the most part, 1st level characters are weaklings. That’s just life. Luckily this means you should be able to master the play of your few weapons, spells or abilities relatively quickly. I strongly suggest that you each practice a little with your character before our first session, especially fighting. Reading about the way attacks of opportunity work is not the same as trying it out yourself. Plus you might realize that the special sword you put all your gold into doesn’t do exactly what you had in mind and you will still have time to swap it for something else. So please, be prepared to use all your abilities and weapons and spells. Unfortunately the downside of a new DM is that I don’t know everything either. If you took some unusual weapons or feats and don’t know how they are supposed to work, chances are I won’t know either and will have to make it up on the spot, which may result in a less cool effect than intended.

2. Closely related to #1 - you should think of a backstory for your character:
My job is to make life for your character as interesting as possible, and that will be infinitely more effective if I know what motivates and frightens and disgusts your character. If you created a character that can speak 5 languages, my question is why? Have you traveled around a lot? Do you have a worldly mentor that taught you? Likewise with craft, perform, knowledges - why have you chosen these skills? Or what’s up with that greatax? Are you a dwarf? Then why are you wielding a greatax?

Part of the reason for this exercise is for you, the more thought you put into your character in the beginning, the easier it will be to grow with him or her as you advance in levels. It’s nice to have a concept or a goal to drive your character down his or her path.

The other reason for this is for me, I have to find a believeable reason for you all to be adventuring together and will have a better idea of what sorts of challenges and rewards to put in your path if I know what you want. For instance, I already know that Osha wants to eventually attain a magic item called Cloak of the Bat. This is a medium level item that she will not be able to purchase outright for quite some time, but since I know it’s on her wishlist I might be inclined to introduce it as treasure at some point. Capice?

3. Logistics of gameplay and staying in character:
If you have never played D&D you may not immediately appreciate the importance of staying in character as much as possible. Suffice it to say that nothing can ruin a gloriously imagined moment like a mundane out of character comment. If in the middle of a battle or description of an elaborate underground cavern someone interrupts to ask if there’s more Mountain Dew, it can be pretty distracting. Even asking technical questions can really take you out of the play, although those are sometimes necessary. But my hope is that we can try to stay in character as much as possible and really get into this world - for me the rollplaying of your character is the single most important part of this game. I’m not nearly as concerned with your stats or fighting ability or clever solution to a puzzle. I want your character to be more than just a vehicle for kicking ass - you should be feeling and thinking through your character to fully enjoy D&D. That’s just my opinion. So the hope is that we can all come to the table and focus on playing while the game is on and when we take breaks, that’s the time for munchies and smokies and chitchat. And speaking of those out-of-game treats, we just want to throw out the offer that if people want to pitch in some cash every week we’ll be happy to provide tasty food, beverages and other amenities. Or bring your own, either way.

Ok, I think that’s enough DM ranting for now. But in my own defense, an organized DM is a good DM. Really. ☺

I suggest we get together to get all character creation and game set up out of the way before our first session. I would like to propose tonight 9/16 at my house. There will also be food and smoke provided for anyone and everyone who would like to show. We will most like have another day like this before we have the first game since everyone will most likely not be able to make it with such short notice. But the ball has started moving. It will be up to everyone else to keep it rolling. We are free just about any night during the week and some weekends.

Please also propose game days as well.

Why this game rocks

Ok so Jess and I were talking last night and we decided to go all out for this game. She made a list of all of the monster we are going to be facing during the up coming adventure. I purchased most of them so we could go on a painting spree and make our game table truely something special. It's rare to have a game with most all of the minitures match the right monster your fighting. I only hope we can pull off the painting in time. We've got till the 22nd so that should be plenty if we get to work on them and not dilly dally. The main point in bring this up is to solicit as much help painting the figures as possible. I'll be posting days that we have planned for painting in the events section of this tribe. The catch is I will most likely be posting the dates last minute unless someone sets up a day to paint with us ahead of time. So hit me up and tell me what days you have free that you would like to paint. Or what ever else you would like to do with your character. Or just to hang if that's your style. Booyah!
