Fareed Trio coming this weekend

So, Fareed is sticking around the Bay Area after a mini Garaj tour.
The 3 dates below will be dubbed, The New Traditions Trio.
Besides Fareed, this trio will feature Eric Levy and Salar Nadir.

Fareed has hand picked 2 insane players. Salar is a true tabla master at such a young age, and we all know how sick Levy is.

Game on...Twister @ HSMF! (post late nite GM)

Soooo....the Guinness World Record Book committee won't let us beat the record for the largest Twister board.

"Why?", you ask?

Well, because we aren't making ours out of PVC and paint. We are making ours out of recycled sheets and donated fabric and in order to adhere to the World Record standards, the board must be made out of the same materials the original board is made out of. Totally understandable. Agreed.

Well, ummmm....we already cut about 3200 dots of the 4096 we needed to make the record from donated fabric, clothes, sheets...whatever colorful fabric we could find! And we already sewed 20 king, queen, and single sized white flat bedsheets kindly donated to us from some pretty posh SF hotels.

Well....ummmm....we aren't giving up!!!

We made one portion of it today: 20'x30' DONE! That's 20% complete! We're on a roll!!!! We're not done!

and we'll be ready to play at High Sierra Music Festival!!!!

so who's ready to play a giant game of Twister with us? YOU ARE!!!!! woohoooo!!!!!

If you plan on attending the music festival, and would like to join in this game, come meet us in the Yoga Meadow, Friday night>Saturday after Butter, Garaj Mahal and Bassnectar finish their late night sets...so technically that would be just before dawn Saturday morning.

So, some concern has arisen regarding Fatso's competition with the Wailers concert next door, and the promoter has gotten cold feet. The status of the show is still in the air. We know our loyal fans want a rockin show, and we're aiming to please. We feel it would be best to have a Wailers post-party, and we need a space to host it in. That's where you come in...

We are looking for a place/house to play a party in Lawerence or Kansas City, maybe even a Wailers Post-Party. Drop us a line if you have a big house, or other space, and want to host the band for a night i'm sure no fan would ever forget.

Any other ideas on places to play will gladly be considered. The date we have in Lawerence/KC area is Saturday the 21st.

It’s my great pleasure to report that Garaj Mahal’s Album “Blueberry Cave” was selected as the Winner of the Album - Jam category in the 6th Annual Independent Music Awards!

Our album was selected from the largest number of entries the program has received to date. So this was no small feat, to say the least.

Quick props to Garaj and crew for tearin the roof off my weekend.
12 Galaxies was a packed house of reveling partiers.
Highlights were... well... everything! Hindi Gumbo Tachyonics and Never Give Up.

Petaluma was another barn burner. Sexy vocalist Kim Manning joined the guys
with her sultry vocals for a tune or two. and the Mondo Garaj closer was EPIC!

Huge Cheers to BRO for getting it down on cd and for T-Rex for keepin things in check.

Many of you know our friend Marie. She was a huge supporter of our scene
and just a warm, kindhearted gal.

She was a big Garaj Mahal fan and had been earning her way to attend the
High Sierra Music Festival on the streetteam. She just loved supporting
things she believed in.

BrownEyed Woman and High Sierra would like the ticket she earned to attend
the festival to go so something Marie believed in. So we are holding a
raffle for one 4-day pass to this years festival. All of the proceeds will
go to the child she supported in India, Puja Nayak

I have Live Vol. 1 and there is a lot of tabla and some sitar playing. But I don't hear any of that on the clips of their new stuff. Do they not incorporate these anymore? I am trying to decide whether to go see them next week.

Howdy folks, here is a little update on the Missy Baron auction. To date we have raised (drum rol please)

$8,875!!

and we ain't done yet!! I am squeezing the last stragglers as we speak...

Out of the 70+ winners that we had, there were only 4 people that never responded. I think that is an amazing ratio!! So if anyone knows these people please smack... uh... no wait, please let me know. (Greg, Misujerr@aol.com)

GM live webcast TONIGHT

Hello all you fellow Garaj fans. Good News!!!!! Garaj Mahal is going to
do a LIVE audio WEBCAST from Martyrs tonight, Wed. 3-22!!!!!! If you
can get to the show, get there! This is the first party of the tour and
it is not to be missed! However, if you can't get there we've got your
back.

Here is what you will need to do!
You need either itunes, foobar, or winamp www.winamp.com . Then, after
it is installed, just click this link
http://www.tapers.org:9993/listen.pls , and then just sit back and
enjoy the show!!!! Please log in early so you can reserve your spot.
The max logins at any one time is 500. the stream url will open up for

the pre-show broadcast at approximately 8 pm. This will be a
"cd-quality" stream so you will need a cable, dsl, or other highspeed
connection.

They will also be streaming the opening band, Kick the Cat, for a full
night of fun!!!

I only ask as a notion of respect...some artisits and musicians do not much care for it...

George Brooks Summit - euphoric!

I made it to the 8:00 show Sunday.
After that bender of a weekend, it really was worth the extra push to get to Yoshi's Sunday night. My jaw was literally dropped at one separate point for each musician at sometime during the performance.

And those lil convulsions from the music.... I got those too!

I really don't know how to describe the healing properties of the George Brooks Summitt, other than....Necessary.

Steve Smith continues to impress me with those extra invisible appendages that he uses to play that kit. I mean, no one can really exclusively use their lower body to create such polytalented rhythms. Right?! WRONG!
I sat head on with him (in front of fareed but with straight line to Steve) and the jawdropper was watching him play a simple rhythm, like one even I can play, then go faster then faster then trick it, then spin a stick, then double this and triple that wow... his solo... beyond impressive. Adding the MASTER Zakier to the mix was just as incredible, if not more! I had to laugh at what I thought was impossible being performed right before my eyes.

And our friend Fareed. Wholly wow. I love it when monitors block the pedals that guitarists use. I kept looking for the keyboards or the sitar or whatever that sound was.... it was coming from Fareed. Another master indeed. I really tried to watch what his fingers were doing, but they were too blurry due to the speed and expertise of his playing.
I wish I could write an onomatopoeia for what I heard, but there hasn't been enough characters invented yet. Respectful bows to Fareed.

I could write volumes about Kai, too. I have a special connection to that man's music. It sedates me, it excites me, it funks me out, it never confuses me, but it heals me. Kai is Peace as far as Im concerned, and he did not disappoint last night. So humble, yet so exquisite. Even George Brooks called him an alien. Ohm.

Because of these Summits and The Village, I am learning more about George Brooks. What I learned last night was it is not easy playing what he does, combining the ragas that he does, and bringing together the talent that he does. In fact its quite hard. But it appears effortless. Listening to his breath before it hits the reeds, watching him TRY to keep time to Zakir during a solo, his humble stage personna and his friendly mannerisms, are all responsible for the energy that took place in Jack London Square.
