Over the weekend I volunteered to work in the 4 acre organic garden that started in a vacant lot down the street about a year ago. It was fun and I learned alot (despite the heat).
I love the fresh vegetables that I've been getting and I hope that they don't end up closing. I'm surprised that more people don't want to volunteer there.
Does anyone have any experience in anything similar? How did you help out to keep it going?

Re: the Organic Garden Down the Street
Tue, August 1, 2006 - 4:31 AM4 acres, wow. That sounds wonderful. Whereabouts are you? I've done quite a bit of market gardening, but don't have much experience with community gardening. It's a better concept though, having people grow their own food, and i'd like to know more about it. -

Re: the Organic Garden Down the Street
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 8:43 AMWow, I haven't been on this tribe for a while. Can tell it's growing season.
I had a thought. I've put a lot of advertising $ into my CSA to no avail, til last year. I hit a goldmine with community newsletters. It takes a little time, but if you were to call the communities surrounding your garden, and ask them if they'd put a short article in that would benefit the members of their community and if it's non profit, all the better, they might say yes. This year, I decided that my little articles got so much attn (including a few people who wished to volunteer) that I'm paying for a couple adverts and not wasting my time with all the other methods that proved themselves useless.

Wed, March 21, 2007 - 2:49 AMNope different Garden Down the Street...
back in the early 90's there was an abandonned lot in a not so wonderful neighborhood in San Bernadino, at risk youth farmed it, gave some of the crops to the some of the locals who were in financial difficulty, sold some and if I remember right got to the point where they were making salsa and selling it - the procedds got pumped back into the community and secondary education for those involved in the work.
I knew some folks in the county public health department who told me about it.
