Anyone Else Recall Gay Cinema before VHS?

I grew up in LA and up until that awful Kate Jackson "married a homo but am tough enough to handle it' movie came out, gay cinema was mostly going to see Boys In The Band once a year. It was actually "anti gay from a gay perspective" in my opinion, but we dutifully trudged to the event. Ta-da. That was it till next year. The younger folks won't ever know the thrill of having almost nothing gay available to watch. But it seems like gay cinema isn't supported by film goers anymore. It may disappear again too

Donate to help fund film-in-progress about LGBT life in Jamaica

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1944650317/an-abominable-crime-violence-and-homophobia-in-jam

What is AN ABOMINABLE CRIME about?

AN ABOMINABLE CRIME is a documentary that explores the culture of homophobia in Jamaica through the eyes of two Jamaicans who are forced to chose between their homeland and their lives -- after their sexual orientations are exposed...

This film tells the stories of…

Simone Edwards, a young lesbian who survives being shot down outside of her home by anti-gay gunmen and must choose between living in hiding with her daughter in Jamaica or traveling alone to seek safety and asylum abroad.

Maurice Tomlinson, a human rights activist and lawyer, who experienced an avalanche of death threats when his marriage to a Canadian man is revealed by a Jamaican Newspaper. Does he dare to return to Jamaica to continue his activism?

Why make a documentary about gay Jamaicans?

Homophobia is a human rights problem, and the struggle for equal treatment of LBGT people is a global human rights issue.

In Jamaica being gay is a crime, homophobia is the status quo, and violence against the LGBT community is widely approved and accepted. HIV now infects nearly a third of the gay male community, who must live in the shadows or risk their lives.

Since filming began in 2009, five characters in AN ABOMINABLE CRIME have fled Jamaica after dealing with gunfire, mob violence, and death threats.

Today, people like Simone and Maurice must choose between their lives and their homeland -- exile or death.

These stories have never been told before and the impacts of Jamaican homophobia stretch far beyond the Caribbean as refugees like Simone and Maurice seek asylum and safety in the US, Canada, and Europe.

AN ABOMINABLE CRIME is not just a film about homophobia and violence, it also demonstrates in a deeply personal and intimate manner how courage and love can transcend violence and fear.

What will you use your Kickstarter funds for?

1. Finishing the edit: The very talented Karen Sim has been editing AN ABOMINABLE CRIME in bits and pieces for nearly a year. Karen’s award-winning work has been broadcast on Frontline, PBS, and HBO. She is an amazing editor who is passionate about the project. If we are successfully funded, we will be able to pay Karen to finish the film.

2. Music rights and an original score: Amanda Harberg is an award-winning composer whose music has been performed by the the Grand Rapids Symphony, the National Symphony of Ecuador, the Thuringer Symphony, the Olympia Philharmonic Society, the String Orchestra of the Rockies and by the New Juilliard Ensemble. Her work has also been performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie’s Weill Hall, the Juilliard School, the Eastman School’s Women in Music Festival, Chautauqua, and the Interlochen Music Festival. Amanda has also composed music for several documentaries, including PBS Wide Angle’s "Japan’s About Face" and the "New Teacher Survival Guide" for the Teaching Channel. When we are successfully funded, Amanda’s talents will bring the film to life with an emotional and evocative score.

3. Paying for graphics and archival materials: Graphics include things like titles, transitions, and poster design. The archival materials includes news footage and newspaper photos that help to document the crimes described in the film.

4. If we raise more than $35,000 then the remainder will be used to pay for an animated opening sequence and a professional sound mix -- and to support an outreach campaign to get the film seen around the world!

How did you get this far into the project?

We’ve been working on AN ABOMINABLE CRIME for more than four years with support from the Pulitzer Center On Crisis Reporting. The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is an innovative award-winning non-profit journalism organization dedicated to supporting the independent international journalism that U.S. media organizations are increasingly less able to undertake. The Center focuses on under-reported topics, promoting high-quality international reporting and creating platforms that reach broad and diverse audiences.

Director Micah Fink first met Simone while in Jamaica working on a series for the Pulitzer Center and PBS World Focus called "The Glass Closet: Sex, Stigma, and HIV/AIDS in Jamaica."

The Pulitzer Center is supporting our Kickstarter campaign by reaching out to their networks and spreading the word about AN ABOMINABLE CRIME. When the film is finished, the Pulitzer Center will arrange screenings at colleges around the United States as part of their campus consortium program.

Who is producer/ director Micah Fink?

Micah Fink, the founder of Common Good Productions, is an award-winning producer, director and writer specializing in international affairs, public health, and environmental issues. He is also on the faculty at the Graduate Program in Social Documentary at the School For Visual Arts in NYC.

Recent projects include producing of CNN's "Memo to the President with Fareed Zakaria" (2013), serving as a Segment Producer for seven hours of Al Gore’s “Climate Reality Project,” (2012), and directing and producing "Mann V. Ford" for HBO (2011).

Micah’s work has been recognized with three Emmy nominations, two Cine Golden Eagle Awards, a Silver Screen award, and an International Film and Video Award. He was a Japan Society Fellow in 2008 and a Kaiser Media Health Fellow in 2005. Micah has a MS in Journalism from Columbia University and a BA in Comparative Literature from Cornell University.

You can learn more about Micah’s company, Common Good Productions, and see examples of his recent work at www.commongoodprod.com.

How does Kickstarter Work?

Kickstarter is an all or nothing model of funding – if we don’t meet our goal then you won’t be charged for your pledge and we won’t receive any money.

Payments are made securely by credit card through Amazon.com. Kickstarter has an excellent and thorough FAQ for backers that can answer your most detailed pledging questions! You can find it here.

Because of the high pressure all-or-nothing funding model, we would greatly appreciate if you could also take time to share this page in any way that you can – Facebook, Twitter, by blogging about it, or sending an e-mail to a friend - or all of your friends! Shout it from the rooftops! The more people who hear about the project, the more chances we have to reach our goal!

How can I keep in touch?

For project updates and news about Jamaica and LGBT issues you can connect with us on Twitter @AbominableCrime.

You can also like us on Facebook.

If you'd like to say hello you can also e-mail us at abominable.crimes [at] gmail [dot] com.

We do not accept late applications. Applications are due January 31, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. PST

If you have any further questions regarding scholarships, please email scholarships@pridefoundation.org

Scholarships
http://www.pridefoundation.org/scholarships/

Pride Foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships to current and future lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and straight-ally leaders and role models from Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Washington. In collaboration with our scholarship partners at the GSBA, we are proud to support LGBTQ and straight ally students! Together, we offer nearly 50 different scholarships, but only one application to complete. Pride Foundation’s LGBTQ and straight ally scholarship program is one of the largest of its kind in the country with specific scholarships for:

Students from various geographic areas in the Northwest
Students of color
Students raised by LGBT parents
And many, many more! For a complete list, please see our scholarship fund page at http://www.pridefoundation.org/scholarships/

Our scholarships cover nearly any accredited post-secondary school or program. This includes community colleges, 4-year public or private colleges and universities, trade or vocational training, creative studies programs, certificate programs, medical or law schools, graduate studies, or other accredited degree programs.

Students who have been stigmatized or isolated, because of their sexual orientation or gender identity often lack critical family, financial, and community support. Encouraging them to continue their education can be very challenging. Too often, individuals of great promise give up because they don’t think anyone believes in them or cares what they have to contribute. Pride Foundation also recognizes students who may not be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, but who have contributed to the LGBT community. These may be the children of LGBT parents, or just friends of our community whose leadership skills we want to foster.

Pride Foundation awarded its first scholarship in 1993 and, since then, we have awarded nearly $2.5 million to over 1,000 scholars! Together with the GSBA, we have awarded a total of $3.5 million dollars to over 1,200 students!

Adult student graphic designer/photographer....looking for subjects for short film project for Digital Video Editing class final project.....
Have several possible ideas- but VERY VERY open to your serious suggestions of any kind....
I am a New York native, and have thought to make a small video 'love-letter' to my hometown- consisting of shooting people who are transplants to NY, and showing them flourishing in their element- whatever that may be.

It will be a short piece, prob no more than 5 mins altogether- with each participating subject probably shown less than a min or so....

I'm looking for an athletic person- that has prosthesis or physical challenge...something that i can film (running, basketball ??)...

Someone who's entertainment work entails playing with concepts of gender or sensuality, and is willing to have their transformation or performance filmed (gender illusionists, burlesque, go-go guys/girls....??)

Thanks all who respond- hope fins u well..and thanks for ur time...

Do lesbian films have more substance than gay films?

Admittedly there have been a handful of gay male films that have had some substance but on the whole they seem to be about pretty bois and their drama. Lesbian films seem to have a true heroine(s), character development, characters you care about and a decent plot line.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is this truely representative of the gay male fim viewing audience? Shallow, petty and body-obsessed?

Milk

I feel like I've been waiting a lifetime - and yet look how worth the wait! None other than Gus Van Zandt is directing MILK, about the life and assasination of Harvey Milk by Dan White in San Francisco. Sean Penn is playing Harvey! They're filming right now - several blocks in the Castro have been transformed into the late 70's. This project has taken a long time to come together and now it looks like the stars have literally aligned. It so could have gone the other way - Bryan Singer was developing his own Milk biopic, and as much as I admire his talent he is cold and technical compared to Gus (they're both gay, for those of you who didn't know). His Milk project would have been much more slick and Hollywood - just take a look at the Valkrie film with Tom Cruise - maybe a little more Zodiac and a little less Frida?

Anyway, just opening up a thread to sound off about the movie and the man who inspired him. Some of you young'ns might not even know who Harvey Milk is! Now's the time to bone up on the gay MLK!

Chef's Special (Spanish)

2008 / 111 minutes

This Spanish (w/subtitles) is about a gay chef trying to juggle the demands of getting recognition for his restaurant, his two children (teenage son & pre-teen daughter) who are dropped into his life when their mother dies, and a new love interest who is a closeted professional soccer player.

There isn't much sex or nudity...it ain't that kind of movie. There were more than a few times that we wanted to slap the Chef around for the way he handled relationships (badly). But the end of the movie left us feeling good.

Is this video offensive or funny?

...or both? It may still contribute to an ongoing problem even if it is in some ways amusing.

On the one hand the music video seems to perpetuate homophobia and so to be slightly malicious (even if not, perhaps, consciously intended that way) but on the other hand parts, at least, strike me as funny. It would not seem funny if the people being lampooned were blacks and the cast were all white military guys at the time when Harry Truman said "Enough of this bullshit!" and opened military service to blacks. I doubt we'd feel amused. So, how is this any different?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Upi2DNRKdyU

People can be politically correct to an absurd extreme in objecting to any sort of joke, yet where should the line be drawn? If the guys who made this video (using equipment our tax money paid for as props) were saying "Hey, we ourselves are gay" or even if there was some indication they oppose homophobia then I would not have so many qualms about it, but this does not appear to be the case. Too many young gay men have been beaten to death and too many young lesbian women raped in the military for me to feel much of a sense of humor about military personal indulging in over-the-top satire of gays.

What do you think?

Constantine Giannaris: The Short Films (1991)

These films represent two hours fifteen minutes of my life that I can’t get back for what comes across as a low budget DVD. Giannaris introduces and explains his intent for the three short movies: "Caught Looking," "North of Vortex," and "A Place in the Sun." It would have been a better “extra feature” than part of the regular show.

"CAUGHT LOOKING" comes across as little more than a soft core porn romp through long gone eras. The main character views and interacts with scenes like an 1940’s era male brothel or 1970’s English “cottaging.” That it was visionary in that it foretold the creation of online X-Rated content is probably the only good point.

"NORTH OF VORTEX": It’s very unusual for me to fast forward through movies being afraid of missing something important or interesting. With little to no dialogue or interaction between the characters, and infrequent voice-over there was little to miss by reducing the playing time on this one. The cinematography was great and just as nice in fast motion.

"A PLACE IN THE SUN": The best of the three, even with the dialogue being in Greek (I think!). It’s the only one with some characters and real interaction between them. Description: “[It] explores an affair between a 35-year-old Greek man and an 18-year-old Albanian boy.” There wasn’t much in this part that grabbed my attention. There was some mental abuse, financial use, and in general just a dysfunctional relationship that wasn’t very interesting.

Eminently missable in my book, unless you like experimental art films.

Delightful Gay Cartoon

As with Pixar bringing back the tradition of having a brief cartoon before the main feature, this would be a fun one to have play at gay cinemas before the film du jour. A much more effective approach to the topic than either a clinical lecture in class or a scolding by the local churchlady!

Protect Yourself (gay English version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWs6nr_CrMU&feature=related

Protect Yourself (gay Espanol version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFB5YBYNfSQ&NR=1&feature=fvwp

Good music, too, in both versions. Does anyone know who the singers are and what the title of the song is in the English version (I'd guess "Sugar Baby Love" -but sometimes names do not match up thusly)? It is a fun tune, though -as usual- the lyrical Espanol version is ever so much more romantic.

Over-rated Oscar Winners / Over-looked Oscar Candidates

So the Academy is proposing nominating 10 movies for best picture and not nominating 5 songs if they think 5 aren’t worthy in 2010. A better start might be by finding five nominees worthy of “best” accolade from the entire world of file (not just what or who is popular at the moment) and pick the winner most deserving from that batch.

Who do you think are actors/actresses who won Oscars who shouldn’t have and who do you think are actors/actresses who should have been nominated for an award and were overlooked.

Here’s my start:

Over-rated:

1. William Hurt for “Kiss of the Spider Woman” (1985) His portrayal was stereotypical flit. He won reciting Manuel Puig’s incredible script. Was the role “William Hurt”? Nah. Pretty much any actor could have produced an equal performance with the words from Puig’s play.

2. Halle Berry for “Monsters Ball” (2001) She won largely for the same reason Hurt did. Working with a decent script and extremely well-directed, Berry gave a great performance. But there’s little she brought to the role that another actress of caliber couldn’t also have done just the same.

3. Tom Hanks for “Forrest Gump” (1994) The tagline says it all: “Tom Hanks is Forrest Gump.” There was rarely a moment in the film where you weren’t aware that Tom Hanks was acting.

Under-rated:

1. Either (or both) Rachel Griffiths and Jeanie Drynan for “Muriel’s Wedding” (1994) Muriel couldn’t have grown into who she was without them; the movie wouldn’t have worked without the depth they brought to their characters. Was anyone that year more brilliant than Drynan in her wordless portrayal of Muriel’s mother’s deep fall into depression? Her eyes said it all. How did the Academy miss this?

2. Cameron Diaz in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997) Imagine this movie if you hadn’t liked Diaz’s Kimberly? But you did and Diaz made you resent Julia Roberts for what she was doing. Few could have pulled off singing terrible but like a true trooper in the karaoke bar as sincerely as she did.

3. Philip Seymour Thomas in “Boogie Nights” (1997) A nomination bone was thrown to Burt Reynolds for playing, uh, Burt Reynolds. It was Thomas who broke your heart when he beat his head against the steering wheel after he failed to seduce Dirk Diggler. “Stupid, stupid, stupid ...” oversight, Academy

A Very Natural Thing

We watched A Very Natural Thing last week. In footage from the 1973 Pride Parade in NYC people talked about the need for people to be free to be themselves. The more things change the more they stay the same.

I really got the feeling that this was showing two sides of the gay community: Promiscuous (liberated) vs. Traditional (repressed). Mark was the gay man who was sexually liberated and stated that he wasn’t interested in romance or deeper relationships. David, former monk, brought the values of hearth and home with him to this relationship. Unfortunately, being liberated and being committed aren’t compatible world views, so things get rough and break apart, wounding David in a deep way.

When a new beau later asks him to move in, David says no. He likes what they have and even loves him but isn’t ready to take that step right now. My hubby was saying the beau should dump David but I was thinking that this isn’t a relationship to throw away yet. He grew in the first relationship and I think when he feels more secure he will rethink his position. Hubby felt David picked up the aversion to commitment that many gay men seemed to have in the 70’s. (Maybe it was just generalized as the sexual revolution ran its course?)

This is a much better movie than its cotemporary The Boys In The Band, much less self-loathing and more positive in scope.

A bunch of us were talking about “firsts” the other day and “first gay movie crush” came up.

I so distinctly remember secretly lusting over Chino (Jose De Vega -- http://www.jetsandsharks101.net/JoseDeVega.htm ) dancing “America” (mmm ... in that purple shirt) while watching “West Side Story” on TV with my folks in the early 1970s.

So who was your “first gay movie crush”...?

It goes back 35 years or so. I remember watching it on a tiny television in a crappy southern motel while on vacation. I don’t know that it was a horror film but, as a 10-year-old, it sure scared me.

I remember it being set in a circus and (albeit through fingers over my eyes) I distinctly remember a scene where a magician accidentally cuts his assistant in half after his magic trick is sabotaged.

Anyone? I’d sure love to see this move again in whole.

God's Blessings often benefit all people. But many of His promises are only for His own children. If you're not sure that you're a part of God's family, He offers you this invitation. The way to Christ is simple:

1. Admit that you have a need.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:23

2. Believe that Jesus is God, the Son, who paid the wages of your sin.

For the wages of sin is death [eternal separation from God]; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23

3. Call upon God.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:9

King James Version

The Holy Bible

ISBN 978-1-58660-198-0

I am looking for a film called Sweet Underground produced and directed by Dorsay Alavi starring Matthew Flint, her husband. It played in 1999 at the Los Angeles International Film Festival and I believe in Montreal as well.

It had a small run in the festival circuit and I can't find a copy of it. Has anyone heard of it?
It was about an underground culture of misfits in LA. Transsexual elements and drug use and other shady, marginal indicators. Very heroin-chic esque and Junkie Humor. Janet Planet was the costume director.
HBO's going QUEER!!

Last year, HBO put out a call to over 600 queer filmmakers: send in a 5-page script with a GLBT theme and you could win $15,000 to make it into a short film.

4 winners were chosen out of the entries!

They had 6 weeks to make those movies in time to premiere at the 2007 Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, where they played to a sold-out crowd and rave reviews...

HBO is reaching out to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community like never before. Starting this Monday, June 4th, you can watch 4 short films by, for and about queers - on HBO on demand:

HEARTS and HOTEL ROOMS - directed by Justin James - myspace.com/heartsandhotelrooms
Brian and Jimmy go their separate ways after an unforgettable night. Will their hearts lead them to each other again?

DADDY - directed by Sid Karger - myspace.com/daddythemovie
A one-night stand leaves Wayne with a strange craving for ice cream and shrimp.

DONNY & GINGER - directed by Jon Bush - myspace.com/donnyandginger
A lonely cop meets a drag queen hooker on a desolate street one night...

HAPPENSTANCE - directed by Joyce Draganosky - myspace.com/happenstancethemovie
Beth discovers she has a lot in common with her son's new girlfriend.

"...all four films were impressively well structured and technically adept...definitely names to watch in future..."
- Alex McLauchlan, gaywired.com

Click here to go directly to the HBO On Demand schedule!

Support the future of this incredibly cool opportunity for up-and-coming queer filmmakers by watching the films - HBO will be counting views to decide if they'll continue this amazing contest next year!

Films are only playing the month of June! Or catch them on the big screen this July at Outfest!

This is an excellent opportunity to promote GLBT vision on a prestigious main stream cable channel. Please pass along to friends!

Hi all. I haven't posted here yet. So here goes.

I watch this a week or two back. I though it was a very good movie. The idea of a man to fall in love with a transsexual is so bizarre to me. The movie explores the awareness of a relationship with a transsexual. There were scene's that were a little shocking to me. This is another love which ends in tragedy.

I definitely recommend it.

I don't know when I movie has effected me so much. Its powerful because it shows so many levels of human sexuality. The scenes of the mass sexual experiences are like out of some perfect dream (at least when I was coming into my sexuality that is how I imagined things to be) but coupled with this is the reality of human loneliness and angst. I think its brilliant. If you rent the DVD (and it is on Netflix) be sure to view the extras. I'd love to hear how other people reacted to the film.

The Merchant of Venice - gay subplot

The Al Pacino version of The Merchant of Venice tries to create a homosexual relationship between Antonio and Bassanio as the motivation for Antonio lending Bassanio so much money. I don't think it works because the money is to be used by Bassanio to woo Portia and that easy switch hitting is not really accounted for in the play, nor why Antonio would lend money to lose his lover. Have any of you seen this film and would care to comment.

SOCKET - New Gay Sci-Fi flick TRAILER

Hello gays! Check out this new feature film that we finally finished - it's called SOCKET, and it's the first (we think) full on gay sci-fi flick. (Obviously not the first gay horror flick...)

Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLczQYdi058

The trailer contains MALE NUDITY - NSFW!

And you can find out tons more about the film here - www.darkbluefilms.com. There are tons of photos, cast bios, production blog, etc.

Just so you know, the production team, and most of the actors, are all out gay guys and chicks. (Plus one transexual actress - Alexandra Billings!)

We've just finished, so we're about to take the film to distributors - fingers crossed we'll have a deal in place soon!

I'd love to hear what you folks think about the trailer - feel free to drop me a line!

SOCKET synopsis: Bill (Derek Long) is a surgeon who is incapacitated after being struck by lightning on the beach. As he recuperates in the same hospital where he works, he meets Craig Murphy (Matthew Montgomery), a mysterious, handsome young intern who recognizes a kindred spirit in the surgeon - he, too, has been struck by lightning. After relating his own tale to Bill, including the strange cravings he developed after the accident, Murphy invites him to a meeting of "people just like us," promising that Bill will find what he craves with the others.

After much resistance, Bill finds himself drawn to the group meeting. Barely able to drag himself to the address, Bill finds a group of people, all lightning strike survivors, all with an insatiable appetite for electric current as a drug. With Murphy as a guide, Bill immerses himself in the group, and in a relationship with the seductive intern. As Bill's recovery from the lightning strike gains momentum, so does his body's increased capacity for electric shocks. Bill, Murphy, and the group "juice up" with more frequency and more voltage as the weeks go by.

Finally, driven by his new addiction, Bill discovers a way to insert "sockets" (the wall type) and "prongs" (extension cord type) into the wrists of the group members. Now they can mainline electric current, or jack into each other to form circuits.

A random encounter with a mugger results in the accidental death of the attacker courtesy of the "prongs" in Bill's wrist being jammed into the base of the man's skull. The electrical impulses that control the human body download into the surgeon, and now Bill has found a new level to his addiction....

LGBT Submissions wanted! Sell your work online, make money, join the gay digital catalog!

Hi all! This is Damon Smith (dsmith@queertexts.com). We are a bunch of university gay and lesbian friends who decided to create an online directory of LGBT literature and a way to help writers publish their work, distribute it online, and make money on each copy they sell to visitors from all over the world! My own personal experience with this was as a subscriber of the former Out&About gay travel newsletter (before they were acquired by gigantic and moronic gay.com and flushed down the drain). They would partner with great gay travel journalists, turn their pieces into PDFs, and sell the files online for digital distribution to members from all over the world.

Queertexts.com is currently being beta tested, and we would like to invite all writers and bloggers to submit their works for online publishing. We have received a number of very interesting submissions from bloggers who compiled a series of postings and articles into digital books and guides, ranging from subjects such as travel (specific destinations or topics, such as "Bear Travel"), Cinema, Fiction, Comic Books, Essays, Politics, Finances, and, of course, Sex.

For 30 days I have taken it upon myself to find out what living life as a homeless person is like. Although I know I can go home at anytime and this isnt a choice homeless people have, I have learned a great deal about life as a homeless person, about how people view homeless people, the services that we think are there for homeless people and I have learned so much about myself.

I would like to make a small film about my time on the streets and post it to my blog. Can anyone here ion LA offer me this for free.

Outfest Survey - 25 LGBTQ Films That Changed Our Lives

I'm new to this tribe. In looking over the topics that have been posted on the board, I was surprised to see that no one had posted the Outfest Survey of 25 LGBTQ Films That Changed Our Lives. Here it is:

*********************
Outfest Survey - 25 LGBTQ Films That Changed Our Lives

We are conducting a survey, and your response would be appreciated.

In celebration of our 25th anniversary we are identifying 25 LGBTQ films that most touched audiences around the world. From December 15th - February 15th visitors are invited to name the LGBTQ films that changed their lives and why. Outfest will announce the top 25 films and showcase selections at Outfest 2007 and year-round at the Outfest Wednesdays Screening Series.

Here is a link to the survey:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?A=164007549E13668

Thank you for your participation,
Outfest

******************************************

I love questionnaires. How often are we asked what we privately think/feel about anything? Many people go through their entire lives without EVER SAYING what they think or feel. One of the reasons I often emerge as a leader among my peers in different social settings is that I often intrepidly articulate with clarity what many are feeling but too intimidated to discuss out loud.

It took me quite a while to pick five films. As comprehensive as their list was, I thought of several other films that needed to be have been included as choices. However, I only felt strongly enough about one additional film to include it among my five choices ("The Butch Mystique").

I ENCOURAGE EACH OF YOU TO COMPLETE THIS SURVEY FOR YOURSELF.

I'll post my responses to this survey to you in a day or three.

World Premiere of Lou Harrison’s Opera "Young Caesar", Feb. 16 & 17

Originally conceived as a puppet opera, Young Caesar explores the early life of Julius Caesar and his historical meeting, and subsequent love affair, with King Nicomedes of Bithynia. East meets West in this unique project inspired in large part by the composer’s years studying Chinese opera. Planned for February 2007 to coincide with what would be his 90th birthday, this is the definitive production of a work Harrison revised for over 20 years, and whose many final revisions were edited before his death in close collaboration with conductor Nicole Paiement. Don’t miss this landmark performance of a brilliant and important opera by one of the Bay Area’s most notable composers.

Ensemble Parallèle, under the baton and artistic direction of Nicole Paiement, presents the premiere of this opera to coincide with what would have been Harrison’s 90th birthday.

"Young Caesar had been transformed into a ravishingly beautiful masterpiece that encompassed many of Harrison’s interests – the Pacific Rim and its exotic colors, new theater, gay issues and the study of humanity. Harrison, one of the most authentic and uncompromising composers of this century was to die before hearing this final version," according to Paiement. "Fulfilling Harrison’s wishes Ensemble Parallèle and it wonderful team of artists is extremely excited to present to you the premiere of this final version. These performances are a major contribution to American Contemporary Opera and an important homage to a true musical visionary."

"20 Centimeters"

All I knew about this movie when I picked it up was that it was from Spain and it was about a TS who longed to have the 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) of the only thing left of her manhood gone. I was afraid it might turn out to be a poor copy of an Almodovar movie but I have to say it's one of the best movies I've seen all year, if not in the last five years. For one thing, I love the attitude of people in Spain. The main character is a tough broad and yet the movie shows her vulnerable side. She falls in love with the vegetable guy from the market and he doesn't mind that she has a dick; in fact it's one of the main things he likes about her. The only thing that took some getting used to was that the main character has these narcoleptic attacks and then the movie switches to a sort of dream sequence with her starring in elaborate musical numbers. Some of them work better than others.

Is "Fire" a lesbian story?

I wondered if folks who saw Deepa Mehta's excellent film "Fire" thought that the story was really about women discovering their true sexual preference. I think it is really a heterosexist story about how women look for love wherever they can find it and it their men turn them down then they can only turn to each other. It still seems to support a prevailing hetero-world view.

Does anybody else adore supposedly offensive old gay Hollywood films?

I'm talking about, in particular, THE BOYS IN THE BAND, THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE, and CRUISING.

Everybody loves to talk about how THE BOYS IN THE BAND is such a dated relic of another era, and that it's characters are self-hating drunks with no redeemable qualities. I completely disagree. Yes, much of it is obviously dated (the costumes, the sets, unfortunately the references and the speech patterns), but so many of the things in the film that contemporary audiences find so "offensive" (the substance abuse, the self-hatred, the obsession with aging and appearances) are still true of the gay community today. Furthermore, there's much in the film's representations of gay men that is *not* offensive: the strength of their friendships, their wit and intelligence. I love that the film raises issues of monogamy vs. promiscuity by acknowleding their complexity and never making judgment, and I think that it's representation of the varying degrees of tension and hostility between the gay men and the straight guy who crashes the party are brilliant and completely real. Finally, nobody dies at the end--these characters, for all of their flaws, are survivors. I, personally, think that THE BOYS IN THE BAND is the greatest Hollywood movie ever made about contemporary gay life.

Beryl Reid's character in SISTER GEORGE is sort of a monster--especially when she makes Suzanna York get on her knees and eat the butt of her cigar. But OH what a character! In spite of some of its Aldrich-esque histrionics and grotesqueries, I think that SISTER GEORGE is, primarily, about the struggle to decide whether you're going to be overtly, subversively gay (George), or stay in the closet--in style/behavior if not in actions--like the hooded cobra TV exec brilliants played by Coral Brown. Once again, a complex issue of modern gay life that Hollywood would NEVER touch today, handled with intelligence, wit, and a great deal of emotional depth. I think that, in the end, Aldrich sides with George--who would rather be symbolically and spirtually killed than be anything but her own queer self.

Eek, I gotta go, so I'm not going to continue right now--maybe I'll finish my diatribe later :) But I am interested to hear what you people think about all four films--and other Hollywood gay films that have sort of been condemned by the community (MAKING LOVE, SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE..., etc.)

Just saw the Catalonian film "El Mar" and I gave it five stars. Its a philosohical meditation on death, sexuality, forgiveness, loyalty, God, evil etc. just about all the universal themes. The characters are very complex. I just loved it and would love to discuss it with folks here that might have seen it.

i just got this note recently from my friend john cameron mitchell, of hedwig and the angry inch...
his new movie 'shortbus' is out... see it ,,,pass the word... you won't be disapointed...
lots of sex too...
here is his note w/ links...

hey all, jcm here, just wanted to give you a "Shortbus" heads-up (sorry if
you get more than one of these). We've been doing a lot of work this summer
getting trailers, posters, etc, together for our imminent and full release by
the fantastic Thinkfilm.

The Theatrical (censored) Trailer and the new Uncensored Trailer (woo hoo!)
are now up on _www.shortbusthemovie.com_ (www.shortbusthemovie.com/)
(full site with bells and whistles coming soon courtesy of Crew Creative and
Sean Belman). You can also find all trailers on _www.ifilm.com_
(www.ifilm.com/) . I'd love if anyone and everyone could spread this information
around on your email lists or post it in chat rooms, blogs, myspace, bathroom
walls (hey, that's an idea, with a rubber stamp made of a potato!). We need
all the help we can get since we're such a little tiny movie.

Interesting dates:

Sept 10 - North American Premiere, Toronto Film Festival, - followed by a
big concert party (see our site for tickets).
Oct. 4 - New York release at the Landmark Sunshine
Oct 6 - LA and SF release
Oct. 12 Wash DC / Reel Affermations opening nite
Oct. 13 through Nov - we expand across N. America

Come opening weekend cause that means we stay in the theaters longer!

Our soundtrack will come out in late October. We're thrilled to be released
by Team Love which is run by Nate Krenkel and Conor Oberst of the band Bright
Eyes. They're the love-liest!

Thanks to all. It's going great, jcm

Just watched this, courtesy of Netflix. Much better than I expected, and not the downer that the reviews had led me to expect. Not Mary Poppins either, mind you -- but clever, much more nuanced than I'd expected, and with character arcs that I didn't see coming.

I'd be tempted to buy it, if the DVD had had any bonus material, but it's just the movie and nothing else, not even trailers. Still, well worth the rental, if you like foreign (Swiss-French) gay cinema.

Beautiful Boxer

Beautiful Boxer is a surprisingly sweet and uplifting true story of a Thai boy, Parinya Charoenphol, who becomes a champion kickboxer in order to finance his sex change operation. Growing up identifying as a girl, he surprises his family when he becomes a boxer. When his coach finds out about his sexuality, he uses it as a marketing ploy to gain access to bigger fights. He becomes champion, but as hormone treatments cause his breasts to grow, he is banned from Thai boxing, and becomes a bit of an international spectacle. Finally, he has his operation, his family's acceptance, respect from his countryman, and his life as a woman.

It's a beautifully shot film, engaging, and believable, in spite of its almost outrageous premise. You don't have to be transgendered to relate with Parinya and his struggle for acceptance. I gave it 4 stars (out of 5).

I just saw Strangers with Candy as part of the Pride Film Night here in Portland.

It was so funny... catch it when you can!

Movie Reviews - a How-to

I have the bad habit of just submitting a slew of movies in a single post with just my input. While it does good for the short term, it doesn't work well for the long-term or incorporate other's input. Tribe has a movie review feature that will incorporate all our comments and ratings. So, if we take the time, we can build one hell of a gay movie database!

Here's how to do it:

Click on the "Places" tab.

Click "Post A Review".

Click "Miscellaneous Recommendation"

From the "Create a Recomendation" drop-down, choose "movie review"

Write your review!

NOTE: I use links for the movie from the Internet Movie Database: www.imdb.com . You can get pictures and links from there. See my first post for "Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil".

Be sure when you submit to check the "Gay Film Tribe"

This will show up in the "Places" section as well in "All Posts".

Luckily, you can edit after posting - PHEW!

Now all of us can give our feedback and it's all ordered by the movie. The cream of the crop will rise to the top based on our ratings!

C'mon gang - let's do it! If we each do one that's a rocking start! I'll try to do a couple a week.

Capote

I finally saw this. I had heard for so long that it was such a good movie. My friend David told me he really liked it. Honestly I truly do not understand the hype. In Cold Blood may have been a good book. Capotes works of the past may have been good. I don't know his work that well. I have a big biography of his that I might read one day. I like Gore Vidal better & Capote had a problem with him so I'm biased. lol But even if that werent true I'm sure I would feel the same way about this movie. "Hated it!" It was so long, tedious & boring. The whole time I was watching it I couldnt wait for it to be over. Probably because as a person I don't think Truman Capote is a very likable person. I don't think I'd want to be around him. Gore Vidal on the other hand. Now that's a great mind to learn from! I think I'd love to hang with him. He just seems like such a well rounded guy as opposed to the bitter wreck of a person that Capote was. ? Maybe if I was older or have read more of his stuff I'd feel differently? I guess he's not this famous & one doesnt have movies made with their name as the title if one isn't pretty influential in one way or another. Hmm. (tapping head & thinking)

Does amyone else think that this is the perfect time for The Front Runner to be made into a film.I mean it has a great love story, herioc characters, and a tragic ending.MMMMMM....sounds Like Brokeback a little. I remember reading this back in 1976 and thinking it would make a great film. i know they have been trying to for years but now seems a good oppertunity. Or is it to soon to have a similar film.

i'm trying to become a sort of connoisseur of queer cinema. here's my take on the movies i've seen so far.

good gay movies:

get real
head on
o fantasma
bear cub
all over the guy
but i'm a cheerleader
bent
borstal boy
lola and billy the kid
for a lost soldier
beautiful thing
priscilla: queen of the desert
fox & his friends
querelle
mambo italiano
david searching
grande ecole
you'll get over it
dorian blues
love is the devil
maurice
mysterious skin
velvet goldmine
trick
the trip
fogi is a bastard
skin flick
doing time on maple drive
trash
flesh
the birdcage
ma vie en rose
nico and dani
love! valour! compassion!
midnight in the garden of good and evil
angels in america
bend it like beckham
boys don't cry
monster
happy together
johns
philadelphia
rocky horror picture show
soldier's girl
taxi zum klo
the wedding banquet
rites of passage
saved!
longtime companion
ernesto
y tu mama tambien (debatable whether it should be considered a gay movie)
the rules of attraction (also debatable)

so-so gay movies:

adventures of felix
come undone
yoshi & jagger
l.i.e.
mala educacion
pink narcissus
no skin of my ass
brokeback mountain
speedway junkie
water drops on burning rocks
too wong foo
chill out
the broken hearts club
plata quemada
close to leo
hedwig and the angry inch
the object of my affection
the opposite of sex
the turkish bath
green plaid shirt
lillies
the hanging garden
gone, but not forgotten
confusion of genders

just plain bad gay movies:

luster
urbania
shiner
love forbidden
leaving metropolis
mandragora
fluffer
the delta
three dancing slaves
latter days
in & out
frisk

good gay documentaries:

the times of harvey milk
common threads
before stonewall

and some movie about gay muslims whose name i cannot remember...but it was bad anyway.

recommend me more movies please. :)

http://www.oasismag.com/Issues/0108/opinion-glaad.html

I'm gay & I liked this movie. Even though it's not a gay movie I don't care. I liked Adam & Steve too even though Gene Siskle nit picked it to death with his esteemed professional opinion. I can understand his rediculously jaded & opinionated points but it was meant to be fun not over analysed. Just as Jay & Silent Bob was. I have one thing to say to him & Gladd or anyone else gay or str8 if they say something I think is bullshit about a movie I liked is "FUCK YOU YOU FUCKIN FUCK!!!" : )
Cheers!

Two Filipino gems

I just saw two little jewels at Cinemasia, the Amsterdam Asian Film Festival. Both films were characterized by real-life ambivalence towards subjects like love, war and death:

AISHITE IMASU 1941 (Mahal Kita 1941) (I Love You 1941)
A fictional historical story of war, guerrilla and betrayal in a small
town occupied by the Japanese, but also a lyrical story of love between a
drag queen active in the resistance and a captain of the Japanese army.
When the Japanese arrive in town, Ignacio is singing in the town square,
dressed in women’s clothes. For the Japanese captain Ichiru it is love at
first sight. Ignacio, however, loves Edilberto, who is hooked up with
their mutual friend Inya. Edilberto is a guerrilla fighter and convinces
Ignacio to ‘date’ Ichiru and be a spy for the guerrillas. Ironically,
Ignacio gradually falls for Ichiru and struggles with his loyalty, while
all the town starts mistrusting him as do the guerrilla fighters, for he
doesn’t deliver much intelligence.

MASAHISTA (The Masseur)
20-year old Iliac is employed at Maharlika, a gay massage salon. Working
there as a masseur, the boyish Iliac serves all clients the same way:
first by disrobing, working the body with an oil massage before the final
carnal deal. The masseurs of the salon subtly try to sense their
customer’s desires.
One morning, news reaches Iliac that his father, an alcoholic who
abandoned his family, has died. The family takes on the duty to bury him.
What follows are the customary rituals. Iliac helps with the embalming
rituals for his father’s remains and is thereby reminded of his everyday
job
