Can we really tap into modern day icons of power? I read some where that man creates the magic that he taps into. Even though ancient Egypt disappeared into the past ages ago, Egyptian gods are still accessible so long as we know how to respect them and invoke them. The same can be said for many other gods too. It is believed that our beliefs create thoughtforms that literally grow in power as we think of them. It is believed that as they grow in power, they become the gods of our religious beliefs. If this be true, could modern day objects function as a source of magical power?

If a modern day object was to grow powerful enough to become a source of magical energy, a lot of people would have to see it and believe in it. The next question would be to find such an object that has become empowered by the sight and belief of people seeing it. Are there such objects? I think there may be.

I’m sure a few of you may totally laugh at this line of thinking, but humor me if you will. The modern day cinema allows millions of people to see the same thing, suspend their sense of reality, and believe for the length of a movie, that certain objects have incredible power. I was wondering, for those of you who are also fans of the Lord of the Rings, and have purchased a copy of the gold ring of power, have you noticed it to affect you life in ways consistent with that of characters of the movie? Has your physical aging seemed to have stopped?

  • It is very interesting that you bring up this topic. When the movies came out my partner and I were really excited to see all the merchandise. When we saw the ring replica, with the inscription an exact duplicate of what the book says, we almost bought one. We decided against it just because of the reasons you gave. This story is old enough, and now with the movies widespread enough, that the idea of the One Ring To Rule Them All was too strong in our psyches to have it. So we didn't get one.

I was at a handfasting not too long ago and one of the other guests had the inscription memorized and started to say it. My first response was, "DON'T say that here. This is sacred space!" We laughed about it, and he said it anyways. I actually felt a knot in my stomach as he said it.

The same happens in reverse. The swaztika is a solar symbol, known over much of the Earth, but because of Hitler and the Nazi party the first thing people think of when they see a swaztika is them. It's become a symbol of hate.

What we put our thoughts on gains power in the Astral. Another cinema example is Star Wars and the idea of the Force. Isn't there a Jedi Order somewhere? Here in the US?
    • Yes, it is interesting such objects can store that much energy. It's sad though that it has to have more of a darker nature to it. About "The Force," it would be interesting to see if the Force now exists after so many people have watched Star Wars. It's description was a bit vague though. It was described as an "energy field that surrounds us, penetrates us, binds the galaxy together(so says Obi Wan Kenobi). It sounds more like the Force is also similar to gravity.

      • "It sounds more like the Force is also similar to gravity."

Similar to the Lady Whose Body Encircles the Universe, as well. Gravity, but there are other forces at work in the universe. Gravity is a big part of it, I bet. I'm not well versed in physics and astrophysics.

I really wanted that ring. It is sad that it could have gained that power in my psyche. I wouldn't have it anyother way though. I believe in the power of stories to change the world and Her people.
        • Well..., the ring is still out there. The good thing is that the prices have really dropped over these past couple of years. You could probably pick up a copy of it for under thirty bucks now. I'm looking to get one and see if my theories on magick are actually real. If it turns out to be too powerful, I'll simply throw it away. I don't think I have to travel to Mordor and throw it in the volcano to destroy it.

I have a feeling though that to activate it or to begin tapping into its power, people that know you need to also see it too. I have a feeling that people need to see it because our collective conciousness literally creates the reality we expereince. People that know you, also participate in adding to the collective consciousness that creates the reality that you and your friends experience. I have a feeling that this is true because of what I witnessed a few days ago. A few days ago I bought a "lucky Buddha" figurine. The figurine depicted Buddha with a very happy smile as he carried his gold bag of good fortune to distribute. Oddly enough, it seemed bright and cheerie when I bought it, but when people at work picked it up and patted it, it literally started to glow. I was little startled. No else seemed to notice that, but I surely did. These co-workers of mine also were very much aware of the power and legend behind the lucky Buddha figurine. It is my belief that as my co-workers touched it and acknowledged its presence, they also gave it power by reinforcing the thoughtforms in the astral plane associated with the lucky Buddha figurine. Perhaps, the same can be done with even a replica of the ring of power from the Lord of Rings. The only way to really know is to try it out.

      • and symbols have a triplicity of meaning: Personal, Social/Cultural and Universal/Spiritual.

And just as and FYI, if anyone didn't know, star wars was based on inspirations drawn from Joseph Campbell, the THE on mythology, George Lucas was a fan/student of his... The Power of Myth series was filmed at Skywalker Ranch. The force was an amalgamation of Ki and something else I cannot remember.
        • Ki, Prana, Chi, Mana, Nwyfre. With little differences, it all talks about the universal web of life.

The mythic quality of Star Wars is the reason it is still with us and so ingrained in our collective consciousness. I'm a big fan of Joseph Campbell. My former partner was deep into the mythic and mystic study of Star Wars. It rubbed off on me a little. :)

Though, we never did a Jedi circle.
          • Everything is the all but the experience is in the differences.

My point was answering the question about where the inspiration came from Coyote. I'm well aware of the ALL but distinctly enjoy the quality of reality that allows us to taste, touch, sense and feel the difference in things.

            : )

            • Ummm. I think my post wasn't clear. It is entirely possible.

The Force was inspired by all of those things and more. I'm not saying that each one is the same so it doesn't matter, I'm saying that the differences between the concepts are small. That's what makes life wonderful, like spice. I agree with what you say. Our differences are what make us wonderful and interesting to each other.

And I don't think you came across as snotty or any of the other things you said. :)
