What you are about to read is part of a Geisha Moth Contest. Nothing you will read on this thread is true.
Absolutely Nothing. So please be advised. Also, no belly dancers were harmed in the making of this thread.

Today is the fortieth anniversary of the historic Stonewall riot -- when drag queen furies at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village finally fought back against years of police brutality and the systematic oppression of New York's queer community. It was the brilliant chapter of the civil rights movement we now celebrate all over the world as Pride.
Part of the Pride celebration at our house this month was watching "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" and "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" again. Tonight we'll watch "Paris is Burning", but we will mostly refrain from throwing things.
Drag queens and belly dancers have so much in common: larger-than-life make up, fake eyelashes, glitter, fake hair, feathers, fake nails, extravagant costuming, fake flowers, outrageous jewelry, sparkles, theatrics, dancing around in gorgeous underthings, air kisses, giant shoes, sequins, the works!
Who is your favorite gender bending diva?

Re: What a riot!
Mon, June 29, 2009 - 9:35 AMI had a work friend several years ago that did a drag queen show at a local bar. It was a great show!! He borrowed some of my bellydance costume pieces to do a Madonna imitation. It was awsome, I was proud that I could share my costuming for a great show.

Re: What a riot!
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 4:22 PMI especially love Hedwig.
We just watched Hedwig and the Angry Inch again last week, and I feel like I don't have nearly enough glitter makeup!
I know I don't have enough fake hair!
Anyone else have a favorite drag queen?

Happy birthday, Geisha Moth!

Re: What a riot!
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 6:46 PMI love hedwig to no end. I listen to the sound track all the time while at work. I have a friend that I use to work with who recently got into the drag scene, (he was making beaded jewelry for bellydancers for a while). he has lived with cancer (went into remission once and it's now back) for several years now. He is witty and confident and brave. Yay for my friend Carl! -

Tue, June 30, 2009 - 7:15 PMI love RuPaul! Has anyone else seen "RuPaul's Drag Race"? OMG, soooo funny and awesome! (I got some amazing makeup ideas from watching that show...)
-
Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 2:56 AMAh, yes! I especially loved RuPaul out of drag in "But I'm a Cheerleader!" -
-
Re: What a riot!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 8:06 AMI've watched "But I'm A Cheerleader" four or five times and didn't even notice RuPaul in it...LMAO! Dude, how completely out of it, was I? I love that movie; that's the first thing I saw Clea DuVall in. I think she's beautiful!
-
Re: What a riot!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 7:42 PMI know, amazing yes? RuPaul won me over with this quote: "We're born naked. Everything else is drag." That sticks with me every day and makes me feel a lot more normal! -
-
Re: What a riot!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 11:52 PMWhen I feel ugly or lumpy or frumpy or blue, I put on lots of make up, glitter, and fun clothes for dance class.
You can tell I was super down if I'm rockin the bindi.
Drag makes it all different. How can you be pouty when there's glitter everywhere?

Re: What a riot!
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 10:23 PMOh!
I don't know names...they're all local...
My first performance as a bellydancer was at a "gay bar" and I was advised to change into costume before the performance because the queens hogged the dressing room. Totally true. And totally worth it. I had never seen such makeup. After the show I was literally drilling the queens for eye makeup advice. And they were totally forthcoming and helpful. LOVE THEM! -

Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 2:53 AMWhen my Laura came out as a teenager, she came out in style with drag queens. They taught her everything she knows about make up. When she is butch, she can get ready in five minutes. When she goes fem for a show, she can take three to five hours! Yay for glitter!
She used to be able to cross dress by putting a bit of mascara on her upper lip, but now she's all curvy (yay!) so she can't get away with the stick-thin gender bending thing any more. Makes it hard to perform as David Bowie, since he doesn't have hips or boobs.

Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 3:07 AMWhat is your favorite drag queen makeup or costuming tip?
Mine is drag lipstick: Most women settle for filling in the lips with color, thus making them smaller than they already appeared. Instead, use a lip brush to carefully line your lips all the way out to the very edge of the lip line, where the skin changes color. With a very steady hand and a magnifying mirror, you can cross that line by following the natural shape of the lips. To make sure the line stays even, press lips together to see the new larger outline in the mirror. www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php -

Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 6:13 AMYou know what? I've absolutely noticed that my mouth somehow seems smaller when I put lipstick on them evenly, I just told myself I was crazy though. When you say "cross that line", do you mean going outside of your lip line with the lip stick? I'll take any tricks you want to give me. I have decent sized lips but with the help of some makeup tricks, they can be massive.
Mwa ha ha. *imagines lips taking over the world* -

Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 4:35 PMYes!
Take the tube of lipstick to your lips and fill them in, pressing them together to get an even line, like you always do.
Now look very carefully at your mouth in a well-lit magnifying mirror and see how your lips are actually showing around the color. Get a lip brush and start filling in your mouth completely. Just do this on one side if you want to see how dramatic the difference already is.
Actually going outside the natural lipline is for the very brave. Probably not a good idea with lip gloss, lots of mouth wrinkles, a very fuzzy lip, or anything else that would make the lip color run or the bigger lip line look really weird. Also easier to keep in place with foundation and powder around the mouth.
If you're going to go outside of your lip line for the first time, you might want to try this when it is time to clean the house and not time to go on stage. It can be a little frustrating to get right, and can look a little crazy if you make them too big. But it's fun to try!
I like Revlon's retractable lip brush so I can always have it with me.

Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 5:06 PMYou're welcome!
I also love all the ways there are to make the eyes look two to three times as big as they are, so you can actually see them on stage.
Best gigantic bellydance drag eyes ever = Nisha and Medina!

Re: What a riot!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 7:46 PMYa, I frequently refer to getting ready for a show as getting in to drag. I'm such a tomboy, I might as well be a drag queen when I put on all the glitter and lashes and stuff.
Nisha's eyes are redonk. So beautiful. -

Re: What a riot!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 11:54 PMLaura and I say she's getting into drag when she fems it up, too.
I always try to make her makeup bigger when she's about to go onstage. The classic drag queens taught her a really natural look, but you have to go bigger for those spotlights... -

Re: What a riot!
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 2:51 PMI gotta agree with Bo--getting ready for a show--I was a tomboy growing up and putting on all the pretties is awesome! I love glittery, sparkly, dressy Geisha Moth wear!! I'm sporting my Ol' Circus stage ready wear for the show tonight. Starts in an hour!!! WOO HOO!!!! -

Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 6:17 AMOne of my favorite things to do is dance in drag. I actually had a short stint where I did nothing but drag dance performances and it was a fucking blast. Had the time of my life. I love dressin like a dude, dancin like a dude and being all dudery. Ya know... I think its time for Spoony to do another drag performance. I'm feeling all nostalgic.
I loved John Leguizamo in To Wong Fu. Probably because I'm short and I like watching the short guys and girls pull off the switch. Connie and Carla was also kinda cute.

Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 6:31 PMI was just in NYC this weekend and got to see everyone getting ready for the PRIDE PARADE before I had to catch my train back upstate. There were so many amazing and gorgeous drag queens getting ready to march...it was so inspiring! It was a great weekend and the gay community was out in force and everyone was so friendly and nice. The city has become so much more accepting and gracious than I remember! I had the best time! -

Re: What a riot!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 6:42 PMHooray for NYC Pride!
I am always stunned at drag queens who are willing to come out in the middle of the day. Very few people understand what a sacrifice they are making!
But I feel the same way about Tribal events... why is everyone always wanting to start Tribal events in the morning? How can I be expected to get my eyeliner just right before dusk?
*shudder*
