The geography, that we propose to study in this work, appears to us to be as much as any other science the field of the philosopher; and more than one fact authorizes us to think of the kind: this one initially, that the first authors who dared to treat geography were precisely philosophers, Homère, Anaximandre de Milet and its Hécatée compatriot, as Eratosthène makes of it already the remark; then Démocrite, Eudoxe, Dicéarque, Ephore and many other with them; finally Eratosthène, Polybe, Posidonius, philosophers also all three.
