An increadible eclectic onslought of transcultural ethinic beats and live MC over dubstep and a whole range of musical styles. Sub Swara is a live electronic crew that represents the best in lo-frequency hi-vibration culture. The Sub Swara sound is a balance of practiced musical refinement and genre bending bass weight. Built for both the dancefloor and the headspace, Sub Swara melds dubstep, dancehall, and jungle, to breakbeat, midtempo, and glitch hop, mixing it all with a global sensibility. The Sub Swara sound engages and unites across cultural and musical boundaries These guys have really been tearing it up and making a name for themselves lately colaborating with a wide range of increadible artists. Our local hero Heyoka who contiributed one of the remixes to there latest release will join us as well to round out the night with Kitty-D and myself for another increadible night of great music, great people and super fun dancing vibes in the beat church styley. Beat church has been blowin' up the house lately so come on out to keep the momentum going! Thank you all again for your continued support!
Amazing Power of Music Revealed
By Robin Lloyd, LiveScience Senior Editor
posted: 15 October 2008 01:02 pm ET
Buzz up!

More than 7,000 runners who raced earlier this month in a half-marathon in London were under the influence of a scientifically derived and powerful performance-enhancing stimulant — music.

The dance-able, upbeat music at London's "Run to the Beat" race was selected on the basis of the research and consultation of sport psychologist Costas Karageorghis of Brunel University in England. He has learned how to devise soundtracks that are just as powerful, if not more so, as some of the not-so-legal substances that athletes commonly take to excel.

"Music is a great way to regulate mood both before and during physical activity. A lot of athletes use music as if it's a legal drug," Karageorghis told LiveScience. "They can use it as a stimulant or as a sedative. Generally speaking, loud upbeat music has a stimulating effect and slow music reduces arousal."

The link between music and athletic performance is just one example of the inroads scientists and doctors are making into understanding the amazing power that music has over our minds and bodies. Science is backing up our intuition and experience, showing that music really does kill pain, reduce stress, better our brains and basically change how we experience life.

Music reduces stress

For example, more and more health professionals, including pediatrician Linda Fisher at Loyola University Hospital in Illinois, are playing therapeutic music for patients in hospitals, hospices and other clinical settings to improve their healing.

"The music I play is not necessarily familiar," said Fisher, who is finishing up coursework toward certification as a music-for-healing practitioner. "It's healing music that puts the patient in a special place of peace as far as the music's rhythm, melodies and tonal qualities."

Studies done in the early 1990s at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Neb., and St. Mary's Hospital in Mequon, Wis., concluded music "significantly" lowered the heart rates and calmed and regulated the blood pressures and respiration rates of patients who had undergone surgery.

In 2007, a study in Germany found that music therapy helped improve motor skills in patients recovering from strokes, Fisher said. Other studies have found that music therapy can boost the immune system, improve mental focus, help control pain, create a feeling of well-being and greatly reduce anxiety of patients awaiting surgery.

Along those lines, music therapy was recently found to reduce psychological stress in a study of 236 pregnant women, according to researchers from the College of Nursing at Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan.

Women in the study who listened to pre-recorded CDs of soothing music for 30 minutes daily showed significant reductions in stress, anxiety and depression, said researcher Chung-Hey Chen, who is now based at the National Cheng Kung University.

One of the CDs featured songs such as Brahms' “Lullaby” and “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Nature sounds, children's rhymes and songs and music by composers such as Beethoven and Debussy were featured on the other CDs. The results are detailed in a special issue The Journal of Clinical Nursing.

Music makes life better overall

Scientists also have confirmed that music definitely provokes memories, as we all have experienced, to the point where we don't even have to hear a song. We just think of it and the memories flood in.

Music has also been found to ease labor pain, reduce the need for sedation during surgery, make you smarter, and diminish depression.

The right temporal lobe could be a key brain site for processing music, as one study found that subjects experience increased activity there when focusing on musical harmony. Other studies have also shown that the temporal lobe, in concert with the frontal lobe, is a key region for understanding certain musical features.

And while humans like to run to a beat, fish apparently also have their own version of this. In fact, the ability to keep track of time is fundamental to the behavior and cognitive processing of all living organisms, Mu-ming Poo of the University of California, Berkeley, wrote in the Oct. 16 issue of the journal Nature.

Among zebrafish, a neural “metronome” or biological clock may help them to remember rhythm over relatively long time periods, Poo and his colleagues found. When the beat stops, the fish apparently “remember” the beat’s rhythm and timing and often continue to wag their tails in time to it.

This finding and other research suggests that our ability and tendency to keep time with music is something we inherited from our earliest evolutionary ancestors.

More about music and workouts

For all you gym rats, here is exactly what listening to music does for your workout, Karageorghis said. First, it reduces your perception of how hard you are working by about 10 percent during low-to-moderate intensity activity. (During high intensity activity, music doesn't work as well because your brain starts screaming at you to pay attention to physiological stress signals).

Secondly, music can have a profound influence on mood, potentially elevating the positive aspects of mood, such as vigor, excitement and happiness, and reducing depression, tension, fatigue, anger and confusion.

Thirdly, music can be used to set your pace — Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie reportedly has asked for the techno song “Scatman” to be played when he competes (he won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000; “Scatman” presumably went unplayed during the race).

Finally, music can be used to overcome fatigue and control one’s emotions around competition. The hurdler Edwin Moses, who competed for the United States in the 70s and 80s and had a 122-race winning streak between 1987 and 1997, used laid-back soul tunes as part of his pre-race routine, Karageorghis said.

The "Run to the Beat" music was played as runners at the Oct. 5 half-marathon event passed by 17 stations, not throughout the 13.1-mile course, because Karageorghis' research shows that music is most effective when we are losing steam, not as a constant stimulus. For the rest of us at the gym or on our a.m. jogs, he recommends two workouts with music to every one without, so the effect is not dulled.

Sports-music fusion festivals

Karageorghis and his post-doctoral researcher collected data during the “Run to the Beat” half-marathon, allowing them to test theories on thousands of live runners outside the lab.

Despite driving winds and heavy rain during the event, post-race interviews suggested that the runners found the music inspiring and fun.

In the future, Karageorghis envisions cultural festivals that involve a fusion of sports and music, where the crowd and the athletes are motivated by music playing at stations along a competitive route, while motivating one another.

“It is beyond the music,” he said. “The music creates an esprit de corps, a cohesion you don’t normally have in a mass participation event. One of the key causes of motivation is this notion of satisfaction of a psychological need for relatedness.

Ola church goers, as you know we here at beat church have always been about showcasing up and coming artists to bring you the freshest sounds and give the much needed exposure to our people who deserve it. This Thursday is no exception as we bring to you Cumulus. A native of Santa Barbara, CA, Sam Fairweather aka Cumulus has been playing electronic music since 2002. He spent 3 years as a fundamental organizer of a series of Word of Mouth full moon parties in the mountains of SB. His favorite time to play is sunrise. His favorite bpm lies somewhere between 70 and 185 bpm, but almost always deep, psychedelic, layered, and heavy. He has been working on a selection of deep and moody beats of his own and is ready to deliver some cloudy and funky tunes for the church. By now you have come to know and trust us when we tell you "you gotta check this shit out"
So come check it as Cumulus throws down his audio offerings for the
church in a style that only the setting of beat church brings out. Kitty-D and myself will be throwing down our super eclectic audio alchemical offerings as usual. So come out to what will once again be an incredible evening of great music, great people, great vibes, and super dance floor fun! As always thank you all for supporting the underground music scene and our up and coming local artists. See you at church!

Also this Sunday night (early to late evening) Kitty~D and Chris Sia will be doing there Tobico Freako at Ryoko's sushi bar in Nob Hill (619 Taylor St & post)
http://www.theoppositeoffaith.com/Press_release_DSI_001_01_full.htm

This is likely the last AMV video project Opposite of Faith will do. It is meant to be a demo of the advanced MIDI set up and creative application of the tools we are capable of. We remixed the song ‘Phaseshift’ and created the sound track to it. It feature the combination of the Legendary DJ Quest-one of the founders of modern turntablism, inventor of ‘Hamster Style’ and ‘Power Scratching’

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyaSiUSR8j4

Once again this is a scratch soundtrack-all sound effects were created through DJ performance and/or sound design. Video cuts were done with Serato and any edits or warping were done in Ableton Live and After Effects.

The Dave Smith Instruments Evolver is the master sequencer and controller in this set up. You can see how it works especially during the end solo. Its sequencer sends out MIDI notes to control both Turntables-which are slaved via MIDI-changing their pitch which alters the speed of the turntable platter, This process alters the sound of what ever the turntables are playing and creating a melody matching the Evolvers sequence. The audio signal is also processed on a separate chanels which is brought in through the effects loop. The Ecler Nuo 4 and the Behringer FCB 1010 control parameter (MIDI Control Changes) to give Quest additional control options.

DJ Quest Set up 1:

Video:

Vestax Controller One Turntable
Rane/Serato Video SL
Mixer Video Cuts were done mostly in a separate pass using Serato Video SL
Vestax Controller One Turntable
Numark CDX CD Turntable
Ableton Live
TTM 57 Mixer

Various samples and sounds that need to be cut in a particular way were burned to CD and the Numark CD was used

Ecler Nuo 4 MIDI Mixer
Behringer FCB 1010
The Koass Pad was used as a MIDI controller and the Evolver was used as a MIDI slave and sound processor
::: An-ten-nae - Acid Crunk EP2 - Addictech.com Exclusive! :::

Acid Crunk EP2 takes us deep into bass driven, Electronica, Hip Hop and Dub fusion territory featuring a remix by Ninja Tune artists Ghislain Poirier & Face T and then also a more ‘tech-funk’ club oriented mix by Muti's own Dov.

An-ten-nae’s sound of the past few years has been crunked out midtempo (Acid Crunk) beats with driving and big hitting basslines. His latest tracks featuring Senegalese MC Samba have given his tracks a voice to go with the beats.

An-ten-nae AKA Adam Ohana is a pioneer and veteran of the US west coast electronic music scene and has shared the stage with everyone from the Ed Banger folks to Skream, Modeselektor and Freq Nasty.

His music has been evolving for well over a decade and he has released music on a diverse range of labels including, Edgecore from Australia, Superstition Germany, Functional Breaks UK and of course SF’s Muti Music to name a few.

An-ten-nae is also known for putting on the biggest and most diverse music nights in San Francisco featuring everything from midtempo beats, to dubstep, electro, breakbeat and whatever new fusions emerge.

Currently an exclusive from Muti Music on Addictech - this is the only place you'll find this wicked release from a Bay Area bass legend!

Come on out and join us for another epic cd release party at Beat Church this thursday as we celebrate KnowOne and sleepyhead's increadible new colaboration album "Knowsleep" This is a gem of a musical offering from two increadible producers and you know these guys are gonna come out and rock proper in a beat church styley!
"We are honored to announce the conception and inaugural release of
Street Ritual Recordings. The self titled album is a 17 track LP by
KnowSleep, a collaboration of Knowa KnowOne and Sleepyhead featuring
the sacred spoken words of Goddess Alchemy Project's Taylor Maiden
Space and the ever-conscious flow of Seasunz, from the group Wisdom,
most recently featured on Bassnectar's "Underground Communication".

"KnowSleep is HipHop, Breakbeat, Dubstep, Pychedelic and Reggae all
fused together into something we can only call whomp. Ethnic and
indigenous rhythms are blended and syncopated to finely tuned breaks,
beats and bass. The star around which everything revolves is the
production, which is thick in bass tones, complex yet transparent drum
programming, and beautiful melodies. KnowSleep is a head-nodding
hiphop lover's icy journey, but the destination is viscous, even
unimportant. It is also a keen reflection of America's current state,
a stoic call to action and a vision of your nearest future, conceived
with the purest of intent. KnowSleep is on a spiritual journey, and
you would be wise to join them."

I have had to sit out the last two church's so I've got some stored up inertia to release for you all. Kitty D has also really been turning it out lately, so once again we are all in for explosion of eclectic soundscapes in an atmosphere of great vibes & family fun! Thank you all once again for your continued support in the cutting edge local underground music scene....see you at church!
We should have copies of the cd available at the door, or you could pick it up on the street ritual website:

These guys have both been developing a very unique eclectic sound influenced by a wide range of musical styles over the years evolving into a powerful moving musical experience. I feel they are both at the heart of what beat church has been offering us all over these years and we are super excited have them back to bless the church with the beats and rhythm's from the new material they have been working on. Kitty D & myself will be aloting ourselfs a little more time to throw down for you where we have lacked the last few times due to such a full line up of guests.

Hello friends and fellow Glitch-Hop Tribe members!

I would like to point out that a bunch of us DJs and producers have been posting mixes for quite sometime, with little or no feedback from the some 658 members of this tribe. I know that the traffic through this Tribe fluctuates in cycles like many tribes do, but I would like to ask each of you for your support and feedback of and to these DJs and artists who are spending all their time and energy to get these songs to your ears, minds, hearts, and booties.

I know I have been absent to this tribe from time to time, and realize that we all have our "real" lives to lead, 9-5 surviving and all that, but there is so much good music and mixes coming out of all the members of this tribe, that I feel it is time to show my support by listening, and sharing my feedback.
As a producer, putting out free original music for all of you, I am sure I speak for most of the DJs and producers on here, posting their hard work and passion for you to check, when I say, it makes our day to know that people out there are hearing us and what we have to share, whether the feedback is good or bad, just to know that all our energy isn't spent playing for an empty room.

Thanks for taking your time to read this and listen to all the great mixes and tracks that have gone up recently, and please let us all know what you thought.

This is the only way for a tribe and community to work. Participation.
We invite you to eat, drink, dance and make merry while offering up some abundance to this year's community temple space, BASURA SAGRADA. For years, people have relied on the temple as a physical space of transcendence, a place to connect to their own sense of the metaphysical and provide meaningful offerings and prayers to the beyond. Now, we come to you in great need of your financial support so that we may continue to make the temple a reality!

The Sagrada Soiree offers many ways to tithe along with fellow burners, patrons, and temple supporters. With sumptuous dishes creatively served by temple avatars, tasty libations, performances by mind-blowing troupes, live painting with Shrine and others, it's a unique event not to be missed! In addition, we will be hosting an incredible art auction featuring one-of-a-kind works by artists and friends of the temple, some special presentations by the Basura Sagrada creators, and other delights to complete this lavish evening gala. Plus, it's all set to a beautiful soundtrack by some of the best downtempo talent in the city!

Later, we will throw open the doors to the entire community, and turn up the heat (and the volume) for some splendid late-night celebration. With more performance, more music, and more art than you can believe, SAGRADA will provide an exciting peek at what this year's temple has to offer!

plug:
"$hittin In The Mainstream" is a year's accumulation of Bassobese's finest work: 12 vertabrae-breakin' original remixes of the most annoyingly catchy mainstream club anthems by Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes, Three 6 Mafia, Ying Yang Twins, Petey Pablo, 2 Live Crew, and many more. This album simultaneously redifines crunk and shows us that electronic music can still be fun and playful. Genre-defying producer Bassobese keeps a congruent flavor of nasty on the pallet, while taking the listener on an 80 minute tempo rollercoaster from dubstep to ghetto-glitch to breaks, without ever giving you a reason to stop shaking your ass. This album is a free gift to all; a small taste of shit to come. A mere morsel to tie you over until the completion of Bassobese's first original solo album later this year.

While existing as a mutating collaborative effort, BASSNECTAR is traditionally the amorphous music project of Lorin Ashton, a San Francisco based Musician / Producer / DJ, (“probably the largest cult following of any DJ in San Francisco” – SF Weekly) highlighted by massive basslines, thick mob scene beats, freakshow energy, emotive melodics, traditional acoustic instrumentation, and fearless mashing of genres, styles, sounds, moods, and approaches. Fusing elements of midtempo breakbeats, big beat, old school hip hop and dub, DnB, glitch, IDM, electronica, death metal, grindcore, punk rock, alternative, folk, swing, and jazz; and sampling anything from the human history of sound and music, Bassnectar might be most accurately described as “omni-tempo maximalism."

Rarely will you find a talent whose vision supersedes the boundaries of genre, until you have met KING BRITT. This Philadelphia native has found a way to escape the boundaries of a single category of music by expressing his creations through deep house, hip-hop, broken beat, nu-jazz, funk and afro-tech. He has been honing his DJ and production skills for the greater part of a decade. The result: a pioneer of all things soulful, rhythmically textured and melodically provocative.

Please come join us this Thursday for a musical treat as we finally welcome to church DJ Dragonfly, a longtime strong staple to the bay area underground dance scene. "As a global traveler who's traversed some six continents and 37 countries, DJ Dragonfly is one of the Bay Area's most sought after purveyors of cutting edge world music. West Coast dance freaks place him in the top ranks of DJ polls for his unique sound: A fusion of funky breaks to a globally influenced smackdown of idioms, rhythms and melodies – bumped up by live electronic percussion. Using bass as the navigator, he sets his decks on a course that weave their way through a wide range of tempos. From Gibraltar to the Ganges, no continent goes unturned in his search for the perfect groove."
He has been holding down his monthly epic dance event "the groove garden" in Marin for close to a decade now as well as heading up and organizing the electronic music portion of earth dance every year. In between he manages to consistently play stellar sets throughout the bay within the world/global electronic music scene and beyond. This guy is a natural for the beat church vibe, and we are psyched to finally have him come bless the crowd!...complete with his live percussion infusions. Kitty D & myself will be in full effect filling in the spaces with the freshest audio delights! Don't miss what is sure to be another epic beat church event, full of good vibes, good beats and good peeps! C U @ church!

Just a heads up that that Timonkey makes dope tunes that many of you 'Glitch-Hoppers' would like,
his past album is more on the Trip Hop vibe, but his has a new EP out now on Addictech and Cyberset
and then live on all other major sites in the next two months.

Artist: Timonkey
Title: Cloud City EP
Cat # Muti013
UPC Barcode #: 844185007504

1. Cloud City	6:38
2. Aqua Legion	5:37
3. Sunshine	5:04
4. Today (Timonkey rmx feat. Joss)	3:32

Another treasure has made it's way down from the Santa Cruz mountains from the labs of the very cosmic auditory scientist 'Timonkey'.
His signature sound consisting of 'ethereal, good vibes' , wonky basslines with a little bit of wobble and the ever present influences of Trip- Hop throughout this release. The closing track 'Today' is the one that should appeal to the broadest audience as it is a cross-genre chillout-groove 'hit' in the making that will appeal as much to dub and breaks heads as it will to those who enjoy breaks or downtempo-house.
This EP is merely a taste of things to come on Timonkey's forthcoming album 'Cerulea' coming out in May on Muti Music.

Response so far:

Fine Cut Bodies (Chi Recordings):
thxthx, a nice package of nice chilled beats and melodies!!!!
will play them for sure!

George 601 (601 Recordings / BreaksFM)
Reaaaaally feeling this release, very nice i don't know if it's suitable for the type of style we play out in the clubs,Today might be a good opener i'll have to mess around with it and see if i can get it in.This is exactly the kind of stuff i like for personal listening though and i'll definitely give the release some radio play on our BreaksFm show (Tuesdays 9-11pm GMT)Thanks alot for this and keep em coming.

Henryoid (Myuzyk / Virus B-23)
Re: Sunshine - Great! Reminds me of Ben Mono, on a slightly more "enlightened" vibe. I'd play this if I were still young and trendy enough to be DJing in clubs :)
Re: Aqua Legion - Nice! Liking this the most so far. Almost has a Luke Vibert sound to it but with added bass attention. Enjoying this very much. Balance of heavy and light, strong and delicate.

Bionic (Mechanoise / Revolution Music):
Loving this release, fits nicely into both radio and club/party sets. Really looking forward to his album.

Kemek The Dope Computer: "Ooh, a nice Balaeric EP that make sme wish it was summer. "Cloud City" is my favorite but it's all splendid. Can't wait for the full-length (and a few beach parties to hear it at)."

Ratling (BreaksFM)
thanks for sending me over the e.p. definately be giving it a spin.
all 4 tracks are good but i reckon track 4 is the one ill be spinning got a nice dubby vibe running through it.

The Karas AMV

Anime Music Videos (AMV) are created by hobbyist who take a popular song and add it on top of existing Japanese Animation footage to give the Video a new and more exciting feel. The Karas AMV was created around the idea of taking found sources and samples from existing Japanese Animation titles and combining it with performances highly skilled musicians and Turntablist to recreate the film sound effect work creating a frenetic, hyper real approach to sound design. After the original sound track was removed, the music (Bass performance and Ableton sounds by J of The Opposite of Faith) was written and recorded into Ableton Live- every other voice, movement, moment and mood was created on Turntables and through Turntable mixing techniques (cutting, scratching, transforming) while performing to the video. The approach was expanded by having the Turntablist (DJ Quest and DJ Cplus) manipulating the Dave Smith Evolver and the Korg Kaoss Pad through the DJ mixers and MIDI control. Performances (Bass, Turntables) were record through the EMU 1616 into Ableton Live and warped, edited and combined there. The final mixdown was performed in Ableton Live and Mastered using Summit Audio Tube EQs.
