I'm really lovin’ the new Rasa album - Saffron Blue - it has a unique Euro-Indian sound. A nice meld of spiritual and sensual… with sitar, sarangi, violin, cello, rhythm and synthesizer.

Music is by Hans Christian and chants by Kim Water.

Mbira Concert: A Journey with the Spirits

ZIMBABWEAN MBIRA CONCERT: A JOURNEY WITH THE SPIRITS
SATURDAY DECEMBER 1st, 2007

Erica Azim plays a concert of traditional Shona mbira music of Zimbabwe at MUCID (the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance), 729 Heinz Ave in Berkeley, at 8 pm Saturday, December 1st.

The metal keys of the mbira, plucked with two thumbs and one forefinger, create relaxing yet invigorating polyphony and polyrhythms. For over a thousand years, the mbira instrument and its repertoire of classic songs have been used in Zimbabwe to call family ancestors and powerful tribal guardian spirits to earth to help the living, in night-long to week-long ceremonies. Every time the mbira is played, it is considered a prayer to the ancestors, which will result in their protection of the living.

Erica Azim is the foremost mbira performer and recording artist in the U.S. She specializes in a meditative mbira style used for healing, as played on her CDs “Mbira Dreams” and “Mbira: Healing Music of Zimbabwe”.

Admission is $15 at the door. For more information, call (510) 548-6053.

The concert is co-sponsored by the non-profit organization MBIRA (www.mbira.org) and MUCID (www.mahea.com). MBIRA is a non-profit organization supporting 135 traditional musicians in Zimbabwe; CDs of these artists will be available at the show.

New CD of World Music calls for community

Where is your mountain? What is your river? How did you come here? These are the questions at the heart of A Walk by the Sea (Dancetera label) the long-awaited fourth CD by Mahealani Uchiyama. The Bay Area artist is known for her ethereal and lyrical performances which meld music and dance. Mahealani is an artist of African and Native American ancestry, and her new CD is a collection which speaks of Mahealani's search for the spiritual and cultural traditions of her ancestors.

A Walk by the Sea is a ceremony of thanksgiving, a celebration of community, and of finding home. The collection contains a message of healing and peace which transcends the obstacle of language difference.

Mahealani is a dancer, musician, composer, and kumuhula (instructor of hula and ori). She has performed in such venues as San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, Te Papa Tongarewa (the National Museum of New Zealand, Aotearoa), and the Grand Heiva in Tahiti, French Polynesia. She has won numerous awards for excellence in traditional Hawaiian and Tahitian dance and music.

She writes, “Is the place where we were born the place were we belong? Is home a physical location, or is it the summation of our experiences? Is who we are what we look like, or is it what is inside of us? The search is the same for all of us. The experiences and the results vary from person to person.

Special guests include Hugh Humphrey, one of the Caribbean's most dynamic percussionists, Ashley Moore, a composer, performer, producer and recording engineer whose award-winning work can be heard on radio, television, theater and film, and Aaron Sencil a drummer, choreographer, costume designer, song writer, and artistic director for the award-winning dance company Hui Tama Nui.

In A Walk by the Sea, Mahealani sings in several languages and calls upon all of us to overlook the superficial differences which divide us, and instead, to celebrate our common humanity.

It is available on CD Baby, eBay, and mahea.com. It will soon appear on iTunes and Amazon.com

One can hear samples of the music at http://www.mahea.com on the catalog page.

Tulku: Doors to Paradise

I may be behind on the times, but I just found New Earth Records – which I am now in love with - and received my copy of "Tulku: Doors to Paradise". It is a gorgeous compilation of world music...I love it. Very diverse and beautiful!

Here's the link with a lot of samples:

http://www.newearthrecords.com/web/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=18&idproduct=1344

It's produced by Jim Wilson, and has vocals by Tina Malia, Sita Jameison, Nubia Teixeira, Jai Uttal and more.

I took this from the inside CD cover:

"In this latest incarnation of the Tulku series we are graced with new voices and music from South Africa, Bangladesh, Morocco, Brazil and Europe. Our endevour is based on a shared vision of bringing together cultures and musical traditions from around the world into a new form."

Hey New York Tribesters,

I am making my New York Club DJing debut on Thursday 3/22 at the Kush Lounge. Looks like I'll be going on around 9pm. Hope to see many of you there! Please spread the word to anyone in the area you think might enjoy it

Bob D

Six Degrees Records Co-Founder and President:
Bob Duskis
@ The Kush Lounge
Thursday, March 22, 2007
Celebrating the Release of Backspin and the Label's Ten-Year Anniversary
191 Chrystie Street / New York, NY
FREE! / 21+ / 8:00 pm
www.sixdegreesrecords.com

“Six Degrees Records is one of the reasons that world music is no longer considered a staid genre… Six Degrees has expanded both the verbal and rhythmic language of world music, at the same time doing more than its share to change the often restrictive face of dance music.”
– All Music Guide

On March 22, Six Degrees Records co-founder and president Bob Duskis will perform a DJ Set at The Kush Lounge in New York City. He is performing to promote Backspin: A Six Degrees 10 Year Anniversary Project.

Six Degrees Records, the indie label from San Francisco, has spent the last ten years producing good music in bad times. And to celebrate that milestone, the label looks ahead to the future by looking back, with a collection of surprising and distinctive covers: Backspin, a Six Degrees 10 Year Anniversary Project. Backspin features a dozen artists from the label’s eclectic global roster, each presenting a new spin on an old favorite. Songs by Led Zeppelin, The Police, The Cure, and Pink Floyd, among others, are re-imagined by Six Degrees stalwarts including Karsh Kale, MIDIval PunditZ, Banco de Gaia, Ojos de Brujo, and more.

For a label that has a reputation as a leader in global pop, this may seem like a strange idea. But as Six Degrees co-founder and president Bob Duskis points out, “we like poking holes in the notion of what ‘world music’ is, or is not. And to commemorate the anniversary, we wanted to do something surprising and different.” Besides, he says, the idea of artists from India, Spain, Iran, or the barrios of California doing their own interpretations of rock classics fits perfectly with Six Degrees’ model of mixing old and new. “When you think about it, the music of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, ABBA, and Bob Marley is almost traditional music now, so it made sense for us.”

Don’t miss out on an eclectic DJ set of international beats, rarities, mash-ups and dubbed out madness from the co-founder and president of Six Degrees Records as he returns to his hometown of New York

Taruna: World Fusion 3

Taruna: World Fusion 3

Shaman Electro is proud to present the much anticipated “Taruna: World Fusion 3”, the final installation in the World Fusion Trilogy, available now at psyshop: http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/shn/shn1cd001.html

If you are already a fan of Taruna, aka Jürgen Eppinger, you have probably been waiting patiently for the newest album of psychedelic-ambient-electronica, rich with ethnic atmospheres from all over the globe – and if so, you will not be disappointed. If you are new to the global sounds of Taruna, you are in for an amazing voyage to new destinations…

Begin your journey with a glorious Sunrise in Varanasi - complete with original recordings on the streets of Varnasi, tabla, sarod and sarenghi samples, along with the sweet sounds of bells, xylophones, female vocals and a mixture of psychedelic synths and jazzy influences….Then allow yourself to wind through The Dogon Mystery, find an Invisible Word, glide through Shamballa and Listen to the Shamans of the Amazon rainforest. Each song carries you deep into the heart of a new place within yourself, wraps you in the sights, sounds and smells of faraway lands, and calls you to awaken to the beauty of all of humanity.

World Fusion 3 showcases rich, textured instruments from all over the globe: sitars, xylophones, flutes, tablas, bongos, shakers, Tibetan singing bowls, Chinese Zeng harp, Javanese gongs, Balinese Rejong Gamelan (the list goes on an on and on) mixed with thick bass lines, beautiful ethnic melodies and psychedelic synths to create globally rich atmospheres of feeling, depth and dance….all while delivering only the most positive of messages:

This incredible power inside the brain is ready to be activated…
Respect Nature, Respect Life…
There’s an invisible world around you…
There is going to have to be a radical transformation…transformation…transformation
The human future will be designed on how conscious we are able to make ourselves…

Travel through the streets of India, climb the Himalayas of Tibet, sing with the choirs of Bali, visit African villages in prayer, chant with long forgotten tribes, soar with the eagles and walk with the jaguars (and meet Timothy Leary and Terrence McKenna along the way!)…World Fusion 3 will guide your mind into a global perspective of enlightening authenticity…through a balance of male and female, yin and yang…to the possibilities of self and world… Awaken to the world around you…

World Fusion 3: an aural global guide…
Omnimotion- Dream Wide Awake (Aleph Zero)

Omnimotion- Dream Wide Awake (AlephZ06)

Aleph Zero is proud to present... A New Omnimotion Album!!!

After four years of recording, producing and composing new music in his Ambium Studio based in Stockholm, Sweden, Omnimotion is finally back with a second album. Utilizing inspirations and knowledge he picked up along his very diverse musical path, Stefan has created Dream Wide Awake. The album contains the best musical gems that were carefully chosen from the music that accumulated in this four year period. It is a beautifully mellow yet optimistic album, with a strong acoustic presence. Dream Wide Awake is an incredibly diverse album. It features eight different vocalists- from a rapper to an opera singer- and many guest musicians with an array of instruments including the violin, accordion, guitar, drums, harp & flute. The outcome hovers between the electronic and the acoustic, the hypnotic and the melodic, between abstract ambient and mellow songs, between dubby songs and IDM glitches. Omnimotion weaves and paints here an emotional musical journey that must not be missed and will leave you dreaming wide awake.

Hey everyone, I just arrived back in New York to visit and to kick off a tour doing 20 shows around the United States.
For the last 8 months I have been living in Berlin and it has been a total trip.
It feels good to be back in the states and I am hoping to see all my New York friends together this Monday at Deep Space where I will be doing my only NY show.
It will be a special night doing an all-live global dub soundsystem with Last Poets legend Umar Bin Hassan, who also was on the last Common record as well as Trumpet playing madman Satish on horn and electronics.
And of course resident DJ, Francois K.
Please come and join me, catch up with good friends in a fun night!!
the originals who made hip hop possible. Before Africa
Bambaata was throwing parties in the Bronx, before
Prince Whipper Whip was rocking with the Fantastic 5
and before the Rock Steady Crew ever attempted their
first windmills, Umar Bin Hassan and the Last Poets
were making rhythm and poetry live on the streets of
Harlem.
Thirty years later a number of the more socially and
politically conscious emcees are planning a tribute
album to the Last Poets featuring Common, Dead
Prez, Chuck D, Keith Murray, Buckshot, Kanye West,
Erykah Badu and others.
Since 1999, Brooklyn Producer/DJ Dub Gabriel and Last
Poets’s founder Umar Bin Hassan have collaborated in
many ways.
First with Umar’s now legendary appearance on Dub
Gabriel’s Baraka Orchestra album, Then with Dub
Gabriel and Prof. Shehab releasing Umar’s album
produced by Bill Laswell. Gabriel’s Current album
“Bass Jihad” is a modern Middle Eastern Dub
masterpiece being compared by Billboard magazine to
Brian Eno as well as on the best of 2005 list from
many magazines and radio stations from around the
world.
The night will be a celebration of not only the return
meeting of these two artist, but also it will be the
first time Dub Gabriel is in New York since moving to
Berlin Germany 8 months ago.
This legendary night will feature Dub Gabriel\s
Brooklyn Massive soundsystem doing all live dubbing
and music creating. as well as Trumpet maestro Satish
on the dub trumpet and surprise guest!!
and of course your host and pilot for the evening on
the ones and twos Mr. Francois K.!!

Nacao Zumbi returns

Nacao Zumbi - Futura (Circular Moves)

In 1991 Chico Science began mixing the local percussive styles of Pernambuco, Brazil, with searing electronic rhythms. Until his early death in ‘97 he led Nacao Zumbi and heralded the Mangue Beat movement. The band pushed on, still considered the unquestionable champions of North Brazil rock/electronica, and Futura furthers their cause. Jorge du Peixe’s deep, confident vocals lead the charge in a dexterous play of DJ-informed production, heavy, heady bass lines (thanks to Djengue) and – as to their original intent – stellar percussive rhythms. Since Science’s departure the band has moved in a decidedly rock direction, as shown on “A Ilha” and “Hoje, Amanhã e Depois,” the latter seeming continuation of last album’s “Blunt of Judah.” But when the space-funk of “Voyager” sidesteps with Peixe’s half-spoken, half-moaned attempts at Portuguese-English, you know this band is capable of a wide range of sonic topics. And given the album title, pointing to somewhere just ahead of here, Nacao Zumbi continues to be the best guide money can buy.
