KAL - Rom Sound & Fury - US Tour
Romani (Gypsy) band from Belgrade, Serbia

Saturday, Oct. 4th
Euphoria Studios, 1235 SE Division, Portland, Oregon

Doors open at 8pm. Show at 8:30. All ages.
Dance workshop between sets taught by Sani Rafati of Voice of Roma
Tickets: $10 at the door.

Kal are a young band, rock'n'roll in attitude, fuelled on dance beats and rooted in the Balkan blues. In their wit, imagination, ability to throw disparate sounds together and refusal to play by "folkloric" rules Kal mark themselves as both part of Balkan Gypsy tradition and 21st Century Roma cultural activists. The identity Kal carry forward is racially proud yet ethnically inclusive, forward looking while embracing the treasure of the last thousand years of lungo drom (long road), a culture determined to operate as equals in the ever evolving Nu-Europe we all share. While our post-modern, polyglot times may find employing terms like "commitment" and "mission" unfashionable Kal are a band who aim to make a difference. Kal the word is Romani for "black" were formed by the Ristic brothers, Dushan and Dragan, to confront the prejudices and clichés the Roma face. Dragan, a theatre producer who has set up Romani theatre groups in Budapest and Belgrade, and Dushan, a painter, aimed to use Kal to blend influences from traditional Balkan Gypsy music with the contemporary music they heard whilst living in Belgrade and Budapest.

I just got back from a crazy and awesome weekend gigging in SF. Aside from blowing the roof off of Amnesia and experiencing the most surreal festival I've encountered playing after the amazing Eric McFadden Trio at Red Marines festival (immigrant Russian ex-US Marines into psytrance throwing an all weekend camp-out festival), Sija and I also made it to Surya Dub at Club Six. They had a pretty stellar line-up that night, aside from their resident DJ crew which is pretty impressive, they also had cutting edge industrial/dub step artist The Bug and rising dancehall star Warrior Queen, plus Rio/NYC based global music superstar Maga Bo. We got to the venue just in time to catch the headliners. Can't say that the mainstage being in the basement was the most awesome place to see the show, but was thrilled overall. Kush Arora was playing some serious dancehall when we got there, then the Bug took the stage and while not quite as abrasive as some of his brutal recordings, definitely drove Sija nuts with his stop start methodology of playing... He kept hitting great super heavy bass grooves, frequently with dancehall over it, the would just grind it to a halt, then start the next track, then do the same thing. I was still digging what he was throwing down fine, but then Warrior Queen came out. Damn, she is one serious bad ass on the mic. Not quite sure how to properly reference it descriptively, but you've likely heard me (if I wasn't in a solely Balkan mode) or Gino Cocino play some tracks with her on them. Here's a sample for you of a few:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65AYSuMY7TM&feature=related
And this, my favorite dancehall competition video, learn some dance tips.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vbGbUm3gXw&feature=related

In any case, the two of them are going to be at Rotture on Tuesday night, so if you like dub step or you like dancehall, or both, do yourself a favor and go and show them some Portland love.
Maga Bo kicked off his set with a string of cumbia tracks, many tied to the Zizek crew that played at Berbati's in early August, then jumped to samba, kuduro, baile funk, and by the time he got around to starting to play tracks off his new album, Sija was depleted and I wasn't far behind her, so we headed out. I haven't hear of any Maga Bo plans to appear in Portland any time soon, but I'll be sure to get out the word should such a thing happen.

I'm thrilled that not one, not two, but three of my all time favorite southern rock bands are playing in Portland this coming weekend. In fact all three will be playing together! I can only imagine the mayhem.
We've got the Supersuckers, still going strong 19 years after I saw them play at the COCA in Seattle with Nirvana. Although they're Seattle based, they moved there from Arizona and still clearly wear their Southern fried rock heavy on their sleeves. Fast and furious, many of their songs clocking in at under a minute (although their first album had a track with a 17 minute finale), their onstage posturing and blistering rock attacks have always left me with a huge smile on my face.
http://www.myspace.com/supersuckers
Probably the most white trashiest, confederate flag waving southern rock bands I've ever seen, they've got to be more retarded than Black Oak Arkansas. Their bass player is a totally hot amazon (I think her brother plays for the Toronto Raptors), another guitar goddess, and the lead singer is just plain scary balding long haired rocker moustachioed badass. Their "Pussy Time" video is black and white pics of them mixed with scenes from the beginning of Russ Meye's Faster Pussy Cat Kill Kill for chrissakes. Need I say more? Skoal anyone?
http://www.myspace.com/nashvillepussy
Wrapping it all up, the Rev himself... the Reverend Horton Heat. A master of psychobilly, these guys have been tearing it up for two decades as well. I was stunned to find his signature track Psychobilly Freakout on Guitar Hero, listed as it were some kind of huge hit. Sure, it came out on Sub Pop way back when, but I'd be surprised if more than 50,000 people ever heard that song when it came out. Anyway, he's got some of the finest songs about vices you'll ever hear.
http://www.myspace.com/reverendhortonheat
So time to put on your western or white trash finest and join me in the mayhem. Who's with me?

His new band Firewater has guest appearances on it's albums from a who's who of early 90's hard-core band members (like Laughing Hyenas, Jesus Lizard, Skeleton Key), oddcentric musicians (They Might Be Giants, Soul Coughing) and members from the new wave of global beat sounds (Gogol Bordello, Balkan Beatbox).
Hanging out a bit backstage with the band, I talked a bit with a Sikh, Johnny Kalsi, who was a percussionist with the band. He told me he liked what I was playing. I returned the compliment, but apparently he hadn't played on the album that just came out. Something about him seemed to make me think he had to be involved in other projects.
Tod A offered to dump a whole bunch of tracks down for me, but not having a memory stick we tried burning them onto a cd. Sadly it didn't take when I got home. If I'm lucky, I may get him to try again as there was a ton of great mediteranean and african music in the mix.
The show itself was high energy and awesome, really a great great show. The female trombone player wasn't only cute, but shredded and Johnny just killed on the dhol as well as all the other percussion he was working.
I had tried to fit the mood of the night DJing a lot of music that would fit in, playing bands like Dvotchka, Calexico, Hazmat Modine and even local darlings Chervona, and it all seemed to work out pretty well. It's always a good sign when you have a half dozen people come up through the night to ask what your playing.
After packing up my gear, Anjali and the Kid were talking to Johnny. It was at that point that it was revealed that he was not only in Dohl Foundation, he was Dhol Foundation (http://www.myspace.com/thedholfoundation), as well as being in Afro Celt Soundsystem and spending time in Transglobal Underground. Anjali and the Kid had met him before at Basement Bhangra in New York, when Dhol Foundation had played. Funny enough, Johnny took me aside, wanting to give me the last copy he had of his new unrelease CD, thinking A&K were just fans until I explained, that while I'll be sure to get a copy from them, he's going to get more miles out of them having it since they put on the Portland equivalent of Basement Bhangra. Some discussion came up between all of us about trying to get Dohl Foundation over to the west coast, but with 14 members, that would definitely be a financial and logistical challenge. Time to start looking for sponsorship.
Afterwards, I just hung out with the rest of the band upstairs. With members from Switzerland, France, and England and elsewhere I didn't even catch, Tod has definitely assembled a band with excellent international flavor.
Do yourself a favor and check em out.

One of the girls was the sister of a guy that worked with my girlfriend at the time. It was totally great. Labeled the Lemon Angels, the Shelly and Lenao plucked out simple guitar lines while they sung beautiful harmonies, singing both originals and obscure old covers (I think one was originally by Marlene Dietrich). Although I had just started working for Oracle and was flying across the country to work every week, I was determined to put something out by them. I enlisted my friend Tony Barry and his four track recorder and over a few weekends we recorded them in my and his living room. They changed their name several times, including Harvey and the Girls and settled on Bodadoy. Unfortunately, my life became too complex with a 16 month gig in southern Kentucky and I never could get it together to put out the release. If Ruckus Records ever puts anything else out, that would be the first thing on the list.
In any case, Shelley Short kept singing and playing and is putting out her third release on Sunday night, headlining a show at the Someday Lounge. I'm happy to see her pursuing her obvious talent and proud to say it was so obvious way back when.
Maybe see you there. I'm finally going to give her a copy of the cd I never put out for her and Lena those many years ago.

If you haven't heard of them or haven't seen them, I can't recommend them highly enough. They have an old timey feel to them, sort of in the vein of the O' Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. When they've got their full line up, which can include trumpet, banjo, mandolin and well placed friends in the audience to help instigate a call and response, it's hard not to get swept away in it all. Especially when they start handing out various percussive instruments to audience members so they can join in. They come along way since I saw them at a packed show at Valentine's (tiny coffee house across from Berbati's), having played shows at the Crystal and headlining last nights sold out effort at the Alladin. I had hoped to snag them for the M4 after party a year ago, but it didn't pan out. When I get my monthly theme nights together, they're on my list as a band to book for Old Time Americana Hot Night. Hopefully they haven't got too big by then.

Here's details from Alex Krebsic... Hope to see you there.....
Hello Krebsic Orkestar fans!
Big news! We have been collaborating with virtuouso Bulgarian-born accordionist Milen Slavov (www.milenslavov.info) on a show called "The Balkan Fusion Project" (www.balkanfusionproject.com -- there are audio and video clips there). The rehearsals for the last four months with Milen just for this show have been going great. Imagine, the rhythm, low brass and infectious melody lines of the Krebsic Orkestar, fused with the world class talent of Milen. Half of the show will also feature original compositions by Milen, which I have to say really rock.
The premiere of the show will be on Thursday, April 10th at the Doug Fir Lounge (830 E. Burnside). The show starts at 9pm with Gypsy Caravan (the bellydance troupe) and then we go on around 9:45pm followed by great DJed music by DJ Global Ruckus. Tickets are available through www.ticketswest.com It's $10 and the venue is 21+
If you can only make one show this year, this is the one -- I guarantee you will have a great time! Be sure to bring friends and family and yell out "Zhiveli trubachi!" ("Cheers, brass musicians!") to us onstage :-)
You'll already have a chance to see them on March 3rd with M4MB at the Crystal. Were you to have the option of Groove Bombing it down to Eugene from Portland to catch a second night of Balkan Beat Box, quite possibly with the band or at least some of them, on the bus, and at least my East coast alter-ego world party DJ, Joro Boro, would you be interested. If it makes economic.
If you were to be interested, aside from show ticket prices, what would you be willing to kick in to the bus for this continuation of BBB (and my birthday) festivities?
Ideally (for me, probably not for Andy), we'd be back that night, as so many of us have to work the next day. However, I'm not certain of the feasibility of such details as of yet. This poll should help determine how this all might look.

I don't see that much getting me too worked up about February, but holy crap March is off the hook!
Just thought I'd bring your attentions to what an amazing month March is shaping up to be for music with an international flavour.
March 3rd - March Fourth and Balkan Beatbox and Joro Boro (and myself) - Crystal Ballroom.
http://myspace.com/balkanbeatbox
http://myspace.com/joroboro
http://myspace.com/marchfourthmarchingband
March 4th - Balkan Beatbox in Eugene (might be worth a roadtrip).

March 15th - Gogol Bordello - Roseland Theater (If you've never seen them, DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW).
http://myspace.com/gogolbordello (trying to wrangle the afterparty. Stay tuned.)

March 20th - Boredoms - Crystal Ballroom
Monsters of psychedelic noise rock from Japan. The music can be extremely abrasive, or at least it was circa '93, but a fantastic live show for sure. It sounds like their heading new directions musically. Hard to believe the demon possessed band members leaping and yowling about the stage were from Japan considering how most of the culture carries itself.
http://myspace.com/boredoms

March 21st - Dengue Fever - Holocene
A Cambodian Pop Rock Psychedelic dance party. Groove 70's era psychadelia with a farfisa organ channeled fronted by one of Cambodia's top singers. Khmer songs definitely have a very different sound. Mostly poppy/peppy songs, the dreamy Sleepwalking on the Mekong which can be heard on their MySpace page just takes me out of my head every time I hear it. Fun and unique, definitely worth checking out.
http://myspace.com/denguefevermusic

March 23rd - Circus Contraption and Orkestar Zirkonium and Batty's Hippodrome.
Orkestar Zirkonium is a balkan brass band from Seattle. I may be on this bill, still figuring it out.
There's a brass band from Oakland coming up around then too that Vagabond wants to do a show with which I may also be on the bill with. Possibly the same night. I'd love to see them merge into one big Eastern Euro gig, but well we'll see.
Ah sweet confusion.

??? End of March - Golem - location unknown - rumor has it the hottst klezmer band in the U. S. of A is coming back to Portland. Their last show burned down the Doug Fir. HOT!!!
More details to follow.

Kultur Shock is based out of Seattle and has members from Bulgaria, Japan, Bosnia, Croatia and the USofA. They've toured with Gogol Bordello and have a similar sound on the punk side of things, but with a heavier harder edge.

So, I'm about to start the process of figuring out a European tour. More details on that later.
I'm also, in conjunction with that, going to try to plan my trip to coincide with the Guca Festival in Guca, Serbia (population 3000). The Guca Festival is a meeting of all the top gypsy brass bands in the various parts of former Yugoslavia and sometimes elsewhere, to compete for the top prize of Golden Trumpet. Attendance tops out over 300,000. Winners of the prize get booked for the most gypsy weddings the following year. I've been wanting to go to this for years and this may potentially be the year for it to happen. Some of you have also expressed interest in attending as well.
The event is from August 6th until August 10th.
If reservations are made early enough, you can be picked up in Belgrade and housed in someone's house in Guca itself.
The main website is here: http://www.guca.co.yu/
You can also read about the event from the perspective of the New York Times from my site I put up ages ago, while dreaming of attendance.
http://ruckusworld.net/guca/

My European tour would start at Guca, then meander through Europe for another week and a half or so. I've got leads in Brussels, Paris, London, Vienna and Berlin and a guarantee in Geneva.
Hopefully I'll be seeing some of you abroad.
