Do any of you do it? How do you get the pops and locks to really shine, on a goddess sized body. My dance style is developing into this style, and I want some pointers! I don't have money for a vid right now, but my main question is pop and lock with plus sizes, what moves look good?

Re: Pop and Lock
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 9:33 AMPop and locking is not all that different on a plus size body than it is on a small body. People can give you tip and pointers but you really need to seek out some GOOD pop and lock instructionals or even better, find a teacher.
There's a lot more that goes into incorporating pops and locks than just adding oomph to a hip drop. You have to have even more minute control when you have more jiggle going on (trust me, that's what I'm working on) cause our moves don't just stop with the movement of our muscle.
Popping and locking isn't a series of moves but having control of every muscle in your body.
If you want to start practicing, I recommend you start with dime stops. There's is an awesome bellydancer in West Lafayette named Amirah who is fantastic at incorporating popping and locking into bellydance. She told me that is the very first concept and you can't go past that to the popping and locking without mastering it or it just looks sloppy.
Dime stops are basically freezing your muscles in place. It's extremely hard to explain over the internet. lol So take for example, you're lifting your arm. You would lift it about 3 inches and then stop, using your muscles to really control the stop. Then continue moving it upward and stopping.
I suggest you do a lot of research if you can't find a teacher or can't afford a video. There might be a decent video on youtube somewhere but I haven't been able to find one.
I hope that helps a little.

Here's a vid with a dime stop demo
you might want to look for popping instructions, Like this guy

i suggest watching some of the videos and just seeing what pops up in the lists. With a little more searching you can find instructionals on how to pop, tut, spins, etc.
Hope this helps

Mon, July 6, 2009 - 4:08 PMCheck out Netflix and your public library for videos. You never know what might lurk. When you do have a little cash, this dv from World Dance New York might be worth looking at:
